Every city has places you don't go after dark. Carver House is one of them.
After a concert in 1984, three suburban friends take a wrong turn into Carver Heights—a neighborhood where the streetlights don't work and the buildings lean like corpses. When they spot a barefoot boy wandering alone in the cold, they stop to help.
Big mistake.
The address he gives leads to Carver a rotting apartment tower where hallways shift behind your back, stairwells spiral into nothing, and doors open onto things that should not exist. The lights don't work. The air smells like old sickness. And something is consuming them in the dark.
As Jamie, Todd, and Wendy search for an exit, the building twists around them—deeper, darker, stranger. The boy wasn't lost.
He was bait.
And Carver House doesn't let go.
Some detours lead you home. This one doesn't.
A nightmare of living architecture for fans of Scott Smith's The Ruins, Adam Nevill's The Ritual, and readers who crave 80s horror nostalgia with cosmic dread.
I write stories that pull you in fast and don’t let go—dark, gripping tales where danger lurks in the shadows and the past is never really buried. My books are filled with flawed, sharp-edged characters fighting their way through eerie landscapes, whether it’s a haunted town in the Deep South or a world unraveling under its own corruption. In addition to my books, I’ve had several short pieces published in various magazines such as Black Petals, The Harrow and Lullaby Hearse.
I live in Birmingham, Alabama with my wife and hyper Boston Terrier, Buster. When not writing about nightmarish things, I enjoy cooking, reading, brewing beer and trying to watch every horror movie made in the 80’s.
Never would I have thought that I would just be picturing glistening carnivorous entities, but with Carver House, I cannot get it out of my mind! This story is a sickening good time. Readers can join a trio of friends attempting to be a Good Samaritan and it somehow goes absolutely wrong. There are terrifying mysteries to explore, dead ends, moments of edge-of-your-seat thrilling action, and all of it rolls together to create something mystifying and creepy.
I really enjoyed this story! It’s perfect for fans of Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser. I felt like I was in the midst of an 80s romp of horror. A little bit campy and buckets of blood! The doll scenes alone gave me all the “Krueger is hunting for new victims” vibes. This story is genuinely not one to be missed!!
This is my first book by Jonathan Daniel and let’s just say I loved every minute of this book, it was like reading a 80s horror movie. It’s about 3 teenagers who go into a never ending apartment building. Will they escape the horrors inside or will they remain there forever. Find out once you read this story!
This just wasn't for me. I'm learning that I don't think I like architectural horror. It just doesnt do anything for me. That being said, I previously read The Uninvited by Jonathan Daniel and it was a 5 star read, so I'd love to read something else before I give up on this author.
This book made me feel genuinely unsettled in a way I haven’t felt in a long time. Not just “oh that’s creepy”… but the kind of dread that lingers after you close the book.
The hallways shifting, the stairwells going nowhere, the lights dying one by one. Felt suffocating. I could almost smell the rot and feel the walls closing in. It’s the kind of horror that makes you hyper-aware of every sound in your own house.
What really got me was the sense of being trapped. Not just physically, but psychologically. The deeper the characters went, the more I felt that creeping realization: this isn’t a place you escape from. It’s a place that’s already decided you belong to it.
I thought I was picking up an 80s nostalgia horror ride and instead I got something darker, meaner, and way more cosmic than I expected. If you love horror where the setting is the villain and the dread just keeps tightening, this is absolutely a must-read.
Carver House doesn’t just haunt its characters, it lingers with you, too.
Thanks to the author for the ARC copy of the book.
Summary:
After a late-night detour through a decaying part of the city, a teenage girl encounters a young child wandering alone in the cold. Wanting to help, she brings him back to his apartment building—Carver House, a place that feels abandoned, neglected, and deeply unsettling.
As more people enter the building looking for answers, it becomes clear that Carver House is not just falling apart physically. The deeper they go, the more the building reveals itself as a place where reality bends, innocence is twisted, and leaving may not be as simple as walking back out the door.
Review:
Carver House is a grim, claustrophobic slice of urban horror that relies on atmosphere and dread rather than cheap shocks. From the moment the characters step inside the decaying apartment building, the story wraps you in filth, darkness, and a creeping sense that the place itself is watching.
Jonathan Daniel does an excellent job turning a single location into a living threat. The building feels oppressive, alive, and deeply wrong, and the slow unraveling of reality inside it is genuinely unsettling. The horror leans into neglect, abandonment, and distorted innocence, which makes it far more disturbing than simple gore.
The characters feel grounded, and their reactions are believable, which makes the escalating nightmare hit harder. While the novella is short and moves quickly, it still leaves a strong impression, especially through its imagery and mood.
This is a great pick for fans of atmospheric horror, haunted buildings, and stories where the setting is just as dangerous as whatever lurks inside it.
Sometimes, doing the right thing isn't always the best move.
Jamie, is driving home from a concert, with her friends Todd and Wendy in tow. Having to cut through Carver Heights to get to her destination, she spots a young boy and decides to help him out. Little does she know, that being a good Samaritan will become a nightmare for all three of them.
This books engrosses you from the beginning and takes you onto a nightmarish ride. One you think will never end, with one continuous nightmare right after the other. I enjoyed the homage it gave toward the 80's. It provided the story that funky, off beat, horror vibe that most tend to possess. You become entangled in the story wanting to find out what will happen with Jamie, Todd, and Wendy. Wondering if they will escape the building of nightmares or fall further and further down it's rabbit hole.
I consider Carver House a book that is a quick and easy read. Unless you pace yourself as I did. I wanted to get lost in the story, absorb myself with it, and come back for more. That's exactly what I did. Some readers want to escape the nightmare. I wanted to keep coming back for more. :P
This is an amazing and very creepy horror story. There’s lots of fright, scary scenes and overall freakiness! 3 friends, Jaime, Todd and Wendy were having a fun night at a concert. On the way home, Jaime was routed a different direction and ended up in a bad neighborhood. When Jaime sees a little boy only dressed in a diaper, she knows she has to help him. After finding where he lives, Jaime walks him inside and quickly become trapped in this rundown apartment building. Her friends Wendy and Todd decide to go inside too, after they wake up. All 3 have discovered, that there is something seriously wrong with this building and escape looks almost non-existent.
I was lucky to get an arc of this super creepy and exciting novella. My eyes were bugging out the entire read!! Jonathan Daniels really knows how to set up and tell a good story!!
The suspense and terror in this book are extremely high. *This spectacular, brain spinning, scary novella came out today!! Make sure you go grab your copy!!*
Thank you to the author and the publisher or publishers for all your hard work! I'm leaving this review voluntarily and happily! Take a look!
Wow this definitely is something ive never read before. It was dark, twisted, and very atmospheric. It makes me definitely think twice about helping certain people. It definitely makes me think of a horror game ive seen before. The one where the hallway never ends and there is an entity after you. Of course this is so much more than that. The details can get a bit graphic at ti es and not only that I couldn't help but chuckle here and there. You'll have to have a bit of dark humor for that.
The characters even if you dont know much about them you definitely get a feel for them and only want the best for them. I certainly enjoyed the way the story just was a maze and not just the same thing the entire time.
This was an awesome story. It grabbed me right from the beginning. The little boy had me torn. Stop. Don’t stop. Okay stop. But when they “brought him home,” omg. Things went sideways from there real fast. That building was wild. This entire novella was a wild ride. I was definitely on the edge of my seat the entire. This was so twisted, s so intense. All I could do was hold on and waiting for this creepy ride to be over. The way this was written was seriously intense. My heart was pounding. This was just so good. First time reading this author, and I’m invested.
I really enjoyed the overall creepy atmosphere of this book. Jonathan Daniel does a great job with his descriptions of the horrors and entities of Carver House, his writing is suffocating and dreadfully atmospheric which is something that really stood out to me. I could also tell that the author is a fan of 80’s horror movies which is evident in his writing as this book feels like a love letter to 80’s horror. This was a disgustingly fun and quick read. I did receive this book for free as an ARC and I am leaving this review happily and willingly.
It's the damn curse of David Lee Roth!! Jamie, Todd, and Wendy are headed home from a Van Halen concert. They had to hit a detour to get home. Red flags are everywhere. When you're faded, you miss those signs.
When I can sit and read a story without interruption, that means something. Loved this all around. Anxiety be damned....I wanted to do what I used to do as a kid. Skip to the ending so I wasn't hyperfixated on what was gonna happen. I needed to know how this would end before I was even halfway through. I thugged it out, didn't "cheat" and enjoyed Carver House.
I really enjoyed this book. . . and it is definitely made my distaste for dolls even stronger. As a kid I didn't like dolls, stuffed animals absolutely but my sister and I there was something about dolls we just did not like.
A young woman tries to do a good deed, her good deed goes punished. . . I guess you could say. During all those horror movies when you tell the person mentally do not go in there, this was one of those moments. a good fast-paced book to read.
This book was a complete horror fest. If you see something out of the ordinary, just ignore it. Jamie thought she was helping when in reality she should have just went home. The apartment building, by the description, was not only scary but a health hazard. Once Todd and Wendy went to look for Jamie the situation only escalated. The hallways and apartments were filled with nightmarish scenes that would only terrify any person. For a short read; this book packed quite a punch.
This book takes the creep factor and turns it up a notch! 3 friends find themselves in the shady part of town in the middle of the night. They find a boy wandering the street, so try to do the right thing and get him home. It was creepy, full of dread, and an all around great read. Thank you to the author for providing an ARC. I’ll definitely be reading this one again.
Jamie, Todd, and Wendy are your main characters who were used..... by a lost boy or was he. The carver house has some twists and tricks and very odd things happening. Can they find their way out or is hope lost. I cannot tell you. I will say there are many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat if you would like to know please do read. I would say this is an amazing book.
Carver house is both horrifying and thrilling. I was hooked and couldn't stop but also scared with all the creepy dolls and tentacle like thing pulling Wendy through the wall. I totally needed this scare. I loved it and will be rereading it around halloween just for the vibes. Great spookiness that plays out like a horror movie.
Wow. Jonathan Daniel has written a true horror story. He put pen to paper and left behind a nightmare. I made the mistake of starting this book late at night, KNOWING, that I have a propensity for nightmares. Well, the visuals of the story visited me during a rather feverish sleep. That being said, a book of this type is supposed to scare and horrify the reader. Hit the nail on the head. 100% I received a copy of this book via the author and I voluntarily leave my opinion of the tale.
This was a crazy read like you were in the Twilight zone of Monster House and a Labrynth. The creatures in this book were well described and highly mortifying. I would dread being stuck in the Carver House!
Wow....this novella is truly terrifying! The sense of dread starts on the first page, and doesn't let up! This quick read will have you rethinking going near those creepy old buildings in your city!
Twisted horror at its best. Carver House draws you into your worst nightmare and won't let go. You feel the fear and desolation of the victims as you follow their path through a house that torments them physically and mentally. Excellent and highly recommended. I received an ARC copy and my review is honest and voluntary.
A group of teenagers find themselves in an apartment building — but they can't find their way out. Trash litters the floors. Signs of violence haunt the rooms. Strange dolls lie around ... and are they moving? Something lurks around corners and in shadows, waiting to attack ... This novella was fun (in a disturbing way) and creepy. I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.
A detour takes three friends to a part of town they usually don't go to. An act of kindness leads to a night of terror. What is in Carver house? Intense full of creepiness and horrors.
