Tony [Anthony] Lane’s Exploring Christian Doctrine is, unequivocally, the best systematic introduction to Christian thought I have read. Lane provides a balanced presentation of a range of theological views, ensuring that readers encounter a variety of perspectives with respect and clarity. Additionally, Lane draws on the creeds and confessions of the Church, grounding his discussions in the historic formulations of the Christian faith. This is a very accessible introduction to Christian doctrine. The content is not comprehensive however Lane does a good job of devoting attention to the most significant issues. Lane approaches Christian doctrine from a conservative and mostly even-handed point of view. As is often the case with theologians, when addressing issues of philosophy Lane becomes somewhat muddled. The strength of this work is the light and accessible approach when dealing with difficult topics, as well as Lane’s careful attention to the textual data of scripture.
