She's a witch who can’t fall in love without getting her heart broken. He holds a grudge like no other.
Bookstore owner Rosie Mayfield wants a love of her own, but it’s not meant to be––because of her family's curse. To break it, she conjures a ghost who will break her curse, but for a cost––she has to brew a potion to help him transition to the other side. The problem? There’s only one person who hates Rosie in all of Heartwood Hollow, and she needs his help to complete the required task.
Jack Haggerty, the ghost’s grandson, has lamented about Rosie for years––she’s a disaster and she’s forbidden from visiting his gaming shop. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, so he’s stunned when his beloved grandfather makes an appearance. While he loves his family and will do anything to help his grandpa, he fights against the chemistry brewing between him and Rosie until he can’t anymore. But he doesn’t know how to tell her he no longer wants to go through with the plan, and she won’t admit that she’s falling for him because they’re doomed from the start.
Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.
Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Her entire life she’s crafted stories in her mind, begging to be released but it wasn’t until recently she finally gave them the reigns.
I’m so grateful you’ve agreed to take this journey with me.
This book is the perfect fall read! It seriously gave all the fun witchy vibes of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with the perfect amount of spice!
Rosie is convinced every relationship she has is doomed because her family is cursed. Determined to break the curse, she summons Phillip, the spirit she believes cursed her grandmother in order to ask him to remove the curse. In the process of attempting to gather the ingredients to break the curse, she ends up working with Jack, the business owner next door and just so happens to be Phillip’s grandson.
Rosie was the best! She was so carefree, wild, easy to love. It was so fun watching her take Jack along on her magical quest. The scenarios they kept finding themselves in were so hilarious because Jack was literally clueless.
When they had to perform the kissing bond to verify their connection, I literally was dying! It was totally the push they needed. I loved it so much!
Jack! Omg, Jack… Okay, first off, he’s so grumpy and cute. I love a nerdy man. But oh my gosh, once he flipped the switch to flirty and sexy, he was all man. The things he did to Rosie was chef’s kiss.
I adored them! I loved the ending. I was so torn and felt compassion for all involved! The ending had my jaw on the ground. It totally got me!
Thank you, NetGalley and Union Square & Co. Publishing, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
So this one was really going great, but I was afraid to read more without looking for some safety details about him, and I’m not interested anymore I guess.
He had a friends with benefits situation with a woman in their town. And while she had lots of boyfriends (thank God!!!!!), I hate his past history so fucking much. Seriously I hate when mmcs’ past hookups are from the same town, and then they appear in the story. NO!
“I have… an in. I can make an appointment and scan over the datebook when I do.” Phillip lets out an amused sound, but I ignore it, turning fully to Jack. “An in?” That all too familiar blush burns across his cheeks before he nods and explains. “I used to date Jeanette.” My body stills, a mix of confusion and another emotion I won’t look at too closely taking over. “The receptionist?” He nods. “Jeanette Smith?” I clarify further. He smiles and nods. I don’t… I don’t know how to handle that. Jeanette is an absolute bombshell, all tits and ass and a fuck ton of hair anyone would be jealous of, and she knows how to work all of it. The idea that Jack dated someone, someone as gorgeous and sexy and outgoing as Jeanette, just… doesn’t fit. “When?” He reaches behind his head and scratches the back of his neck before shrugging, but answers all the same. “I don’t know. We stopped seeing each other maybe… six months ago?” “How long were you together?” “Is that jealousy I’m sensing, Rosemary?” Phillip asks, and I fight the sudden urge for my jaw to go tight, instead giving the ghost the middle finger. “No. I just…” I want to know because about eight months ago, Jeanette came into my store looking for a book. She told me she was really into some new guy she was dating and wanted to keep the happy feeling going. There was no reason not to, but for some reason, I didn’t think she was ready for a love pick. So I pointed her in the right direction of the rom-coms and let her shop on her own, not giving her a love match. It’s haunted me since, especially when Violet told me that a month later, Jeanette came into her shop upset and looking for a pick-me-up. She’d been dumped. By Jack, it seems. And I can’t help but think part of that was my fault, that if I’d given her a love book, she would have found her magical happily ever after. Despite the guilt eating at me even now, I can’t help but feel that tiny spark of satisfaction burning in my chest. The idea that Jack is single might have something to do with me. Not that it matters. I’m cursed. I can’t fall in love. We’re just fuck buddies, as he put it. And once this curse is broken, I’ll go off on my merry way and find the true love of my life once and for all. “I’m not jealous. I’m just… surprised. I hear all the Heartwood Hollow gossip. And you don’t… people.” “I’ve been with women, Rosie,” Jack says with a smug smile. It takes everything in my being not to react to those words, to the idea of him having been with other women. “I just don’t date them, not really. I don’t go to dinner with them or spend nights playing video games or going on adventures with them.” His words are pointed, his face assessing, and my stomach starts to turn in on itself. His words are so intentional, but I don’t have the guts to actually ask him, so I don’t. Instead, I smile and widen my eyes, raising my eyebrows repeatedly. He rolls his eyes and continues on. “Anyway, I think she thought it was more than it was, so I broke it off before things got too… complicated.” I wonder if that happens a lot, Jack making people feel special and different, only for it to be a miscommunication. A sense of relief washes through me that we won’t have that problem, not with everything coming to an end when the full moon hits, of course. I wouldn’t want a miscommunication to ruin the friendship I’m learning to value. I give him a tight smile before turning back to the task at hand. “I’m surprised because… well, you know,” I say without meaning it. “I don’t,” he says with a teasing smile that tells me he very much does know. “I think you should tell me explicitly what you were surprised about.” Phillip chuckles, entertained by the back-and-forth, and I roll my eyes, trying to ignore the burning blush that is creeping down to my chest now. “That you dated someone in town? That you’re suave enough to land a hottie like Jeanette?” “I landed you, didn’t I?” My pulse rockets again, and in that moment, I think he’s spending way too much time with me because he’s getting way too good at the comebacks. Who is this man across from me, and what has he done with my shy, grumpy neighbor? I clear my throat, but I’m unable to clear my mind as well. Still, I take a deep breath and grin. “Point made.” “We weren’t dating, per se. Well, I didn’t think we were. It was just a… benefits, thing,” Jack explains. “Friends with benefits?” He shrugs. “I guess you could call it that.” It settles heavy and uncomfortable in my stomach, a foreign feeling taking root. Jealousy? Hurt? I’m not sure, but the fact that this isn’t Jack’s first foray into friends with benefits settles over me. Is this not… special to him? “Less friends, though,” he clarifies, as if he can see the thoughts running through my mind and wants to mollify me. It doesn’t matter, though, I remind myself. This is fun. This is just friends. Friends don’t care about friends’ sexual or dating history, not really. “So… are you sure you want to go there? Maybe I should, if there’s bad blood between you both,” I ask, trying to change the subject. “I could go and try to butter her up.” He shakes his head. “That would be a bad idea.” “What? Why?” “She, uh… I don’t think she likes you.” He cringes at me, and I blink back at him. “I’m sorry?” He shrugs. “She doesn’t like you.” “But I’m… I’m… I’m delightful.” A small smile tips on Jack’s lips. “Well, she disagrees.” “Well, she’s an idiot,” I say. Jack’s smile turns entertained, and he lets out a small laugh like he can’t fight it back before wrapping an arm around my waist and tugging me into him. “Yeah, she is. But she’s also…” He pauses, contemplating how to say his next words before proceeding. “She came in a few days ago. Asking if I wanted to get coffee with her. See if we could… work things out. Try again.” I lift an eyebrow taking him in skeptically, my stomach in knots at the thought of Jeanette, gorgeous Jeanette with her lustrous long hair that I could only manage with a tonic if I remembered to put it on every single night (unlikely), with her curves and her somehow flat-as-a-board stomach that I couldn’t have if I even wanted to because I will never stop eating sweet treats on the regular, and her sex kitten voice that even I think is hot, striding into the Gaming Den with reconciliation on her mind. “And?” I ask. “And,” he says, using a hand to smooth some of my hair back. He does that a lot, pushing hair behind my ear or my shoulder, like he’s worried it’s in my face, worried it’s bothering me. I used to wear it back when I was working to avoid just that, but I’ve found lately I’m letting it go more and more. “Before she got an answer, a small redheaded witch rushed through the doors and attacked me because she guessed the ending of her book correctly.” I blink, trying to remember the day. I remember the book because I’d been telling him about it a few days earlier. It was the mystery and suspense romance I’d been reading after his event. When I finished the book on a slow day at the shop, I realized I’d been right and instantly needed to tell Jack about it. I flipped my sign to closed and nearly sprinted across the way to tell him. When I work through the memory a bit, I do remember him talking to… someone, but I was so excited that I couldn’t focus on anything other than telling him. And then his arm was around my waist, and he was tugging me into his side and pressing a kiss to my hair, giving me a soft, good job, babe, so I was a bit distracted. But apparently, he was standing there with Jeanette. And she was asking him about their friends’ benefits situation, only for me to flaunt my own in her face. Oh, god, that was so uncool of me. But also, a small, very petty part of me giggles and steeples her fingers maniacally. I push her aside and put on my logical thinking hat. “So what, you’re going to go in and flirt with her and sneak a peek at her appointment book?” “Pretty much.” He shrugs like it’s no big deal, but I’m skeptical. This is Jack we’re dealing with, after all. “Wanna go now?” I stare at him for another beat before shrugging reluctantly. “Sure.” He stares at me again, then smiles wide before pulling my face into his, kissing me.
That’s about 60-66% in, he then proceeds to flirt with Jeanette (to get info but anyway). That also makes the fmc jealous. Yeah nope, I’m out. Glad my gut saved me again.
Most probably it wouldn’t be bothering me that much if: 1) fmc and mmc didn’t know each other at that time (but they did, for 3 years, and yes, I’m hypocritical since fmc had boyfriends, I don’t care) 2) that ow weren’t from their town 3) that ow never appeared in the book. But oh well.
On the plus side, like I mentioned, fmc dated lots of guys, it never worked out because of the curse.

[arc review] I really wanted to enjoy this, but it just fell flat. I powered on through to the end hoping I’d like it more, but overall I don’t think I’m the audience for this book. don’t get me wrong, it’s a very cozy magical romance, but at times it felt very juvenile?
a lot of things just didn’t make sense to me, and it felt like the characters behaved like teenagers instead of the adults they’re supposed to be.
the curse had so much potential but wasn’t fleshed out like I would’ve hoped. it also didn’t make sense in hindsight.
rosie’s grandmother was cursed by a man she rejected, meaning they can’t truly be in love with someone as the relationship is doomed from the start. if this is the case, how did rosie’s parents stay together long enough to have not one, but three children? as rosie and her sisters are from a line of magical witches, surely the curse would’ve had an impact on their ancestry?
at times it felt like jack was rude for the sake of being the grumpy character, and while I do get it to an extent, it again felt very juvenile and hard for me to believe these characters are adults who run businesses in this small town. I mean, the sign on his business door?
I didn’t feel invested in the characters to care for them, which did have an effect on me reading it, because I just didn’t care.
it’s a shame, because I had really high hopes. I know a lot of people will enjoy this, and my opinion on it is 100% not a reflection on the book.
thank you union square & co. for the advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
3.5⭐️ I saw this advertised as a mix of Practical Magic and Gilmore Girls and honestly that is pretty spot on. With the whole small-town charm of GG but the magical realism of Practical Magic? This was very cute.
This is a quick and fun read, and I enjoyed the banter between Rosie and Jack. Going along with them on the quest to break Rosie's family curse was a wild ride
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing team for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
sunshiney witch with love magic & the grumpy shop owner across the way
it’s been a cold & rainy few days here so I was in the mood for something autumnal
Things to know: - light paranormal romance - grumpy sunshine - working together to break a curse - a ghost of the silly variety - forced proximity - kiss bonds
This isn’t my normal book vibes I read. But for Morgan Elizabeth I dove in. And it was remarkably fun and cute!
Practical magic x Gilmore Girls vibes? Yes. We’ve got sister witches and supernatural being. But the town is pure Gilmore Girl.
Rosie & Jack Neighboring store owners A gamer with a gaming store -(also not my type of MMC but I adored him) A witch with a romance book store Grumpy x sunshine
And dun dun dun. A family love curse. Cue a ghost. Cue banter. Cue a magical potion ingredient quest.
“Sometimes the most magical things are the most ordinary ones.”
Meet Cute Magic completely swept me away. Between the charming small-town atmosphere, the magical quest, the grumpy/sunshine romance, and all the fall vibes, this was exactly the kind of book I never wanted to end.
Rosie and Jack were adorable together. She’s a witch who helps other people find true love but can’t seem to find it for herself, while Jack is practical, analytical, and perfectly happy keeping magic in the fantasy worlds he loves. Watching them slowly fall for each other while gathering ingredients for a magical potion was sweet, funny, and completely charming.
What I loved most was how immersive the story felt. The magic, the mystery, the romance, and the whimsical atmosphere all blended together so effortlessly that I was hooked from the very beginning. Morgan Elizabeth has a way of pulling me into a story immediately, and this book was no exception.
Honestly, I already know I’ll be rereading this one when the weather gets cooler. If you’re looking for a cozy fall romance filled with magic, charm, and a little bit of adventure, this one is pure bookish comfort. 🧡🍁
Thank you to NetGalley and Union Square & Co. for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The plot is very befitting of the title. It contains all the things. Pink magic, a wayward ghost, a cat who doesn’t give a damn, and a neighbourhood of hotties and future hotties.
This is cute. Super, super, super cute.
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m kinda surprised, but I actually really liked the book. It’s super straightforward and simple, like the perfect CW show.
Witch Rosie Mayfield is cursed. Every time she tells a guy she loves him, her heart gets broken. She summons the ghost Philip, the one who cursed her grandmother, and makes a deal with him. She has to brew a potion so he can finally cross over to the other side, and in exchange she’ll get to meet her true love. The only problem is she has to team up with Philip’s grandson who totally hates her.
The whole book is really sweet and cute. The only thing is the spicy scenes felt a little out of place for me.
rosemary mayfield summons a ghost to her apartment, striking a deal to break a generational curse that has every relationship of hers ending in heartbreak. her magical affinity has her helping everyone else find their one true love except she is unable to find her own perfect match—until him.
jack haggerty specializes getting lost in fantastical worlds, not knowing that magic was right across the street from him all along. he thought witches and warlocks were fictional until he catches his neighbor breaking into his storefront, admitting she’s a witch. he invites himself on the quest to break a nearly century long curse.

SPOILERS
morgan elizabeth is an auto-read author for me so when i saw this upcoming release on netgalley i immediately picked up the ARC. i loved loved loved wizards of waverly place growing up and will send alex russo GIFs in the group chat to this day. i watched twitches growing up to and was instantly here for the vibes.
her grandmother turned down a warlock for a date and in retaliation he curse her entire family line. the generational curse has every relationship a mayfield has to fail shortly after the ‘i love you’ is exchanged.
i loveee that her magic is a shimmering pink. her speciality of magic is helping people find their one true love, even though she can’t find love herself. she walks in on her boyfriend actively cheating on her which clearly marks the end of her last relationship.
rosie basically raised her younger sisters after both of their parents pass away. poppy owns a flower shop and violet owns a bakery. i don’t get why she didn’t tell them about the family curse since it would impact their love lives too.
her cat, percy, swipes his paw through the salt circle that contained the spirit. now she has her next door neighbor’s grandfather haunting her apartment and clearly meddling to get them together. i do wish we got to see more interactions with percy or if she could have spelled him to talk.
i really liked that she wanted to do joint events between both of their businesses. she came over to ship shop carrying one of her dragon books hoping to collaborate with any of his merchandise involving dragons. her idea of hosting an event together was cute and i don’t get why he would immediately turn it down. i think i would have liked the plot better if he was new to town and they were just now getting off on the wrong foot but that means he was kinda mean to her for three years.
i don’t like that he yelled at her in the beginning. he wanted her to get out of his store before she caused another incident yet i don’t get why she couldn’t have used her magic to prevent any property damage. i hope the curse was influencing his temper to make his dislikable.
i am not quite understanding the complexities of a kiss bond and what that would mean in terms of consent. i didn’t particularly like to hear him say that she wasn’t his type when he clearly is into her.
uh oh. jack betrayed her, trying to swap out the moonflowers they picked under a gibbous moon for regular flowers which would sabotage their spell. they get back together after a week a part, his coming over to support her through breaking the curse. apparently there wasn’t even a curse which is kind of a letdown. it is funny that his grandfather wanted to eat baked goods again but still.
This was such a cosy, magical romance! It had everything I love in this genre from practical magic, ghosts, family curses, a charming small town, sisterhood, grumpy/sunshine to all the cosy vibes.
I really enjoyed following Rosie and Jack as they navigated all the magical chaos around them and on their journey. The romance was sweet (some parts steamy) and I loved seeing them work together throughout the story.
The setting was another highlight for me. The town reminded me of York, and I adored the sense of community throughout the story. Everyone looked out for one another, and the relationship between Rosie and her sisters was one of my favourite parts. It was so refreshing to read about a supportive family dynamic.
My only small complaint is that I would have liked Jack to stay a little more shy and gentle in this story. I loved that side of his personality at the beginning, but as the story went on, he became much more confident, and there was one moment where he seemed a little too aware of how attractive he was, which wasn’t really for me and brought me out of the story a little.
Overall, this was a charming, heartwarming read full of magic, romance and cosy small town vibes. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a feel good cosy romance.
Thank you NetGalley and Union Square & Co for the opportunity to read this ARC
Thank you Net Galley for access to this ARC. Meet Cute Magic follows Rosie Mayfield, a witch cursed to never find lasting love, summons a ghost to break her family's curse. BUT in order to break the curse, she must work with the one man who hates her most, Jack Haggerty. As they're forced together, their growing attraction threatens everything.
This was the cutest read! I really enjoy grumpy x sunshine and was very excited to realize that it was that trope. I really felt for Rosie as she was so quick to care of everyone else, but struggled herself in asking for help. Seeing her lean into the uncomfortableness of working with Jack was so empowering. And seeing Jack lean into breaking out of his own comfort zone and come to recognize that his ‘hate’ for Rosie may not be all hate was cute. I really enjoyed listening to the banter as they became more comfortable with each other.
Side note, I loved Phillip. I hope we get to see more of him as we explore Rosie’s other sisters in their books!
this was advertised as practical magic x gilmore girls, my two favourite things ever, and it was definitely close. the small townness was very reminiscent of gg and i loved it.
a very cute and quick read that had me hooked - i thoroughly enjoyed the quests that jack and rosie had to go on to gather ingredients and thought their relationship was very sweet.
i loved the meddling ghost and the ending did have me laughing a bit at his antics.
there were a few (2ish) typos in the arc copy that I received, however it was not the end of the world for me and did not take away from the book at all.
i will definitely read more of morgans books as i had such a fun time.
4.25 stars! A very cute and cozy paranormal romance. I loved both the main characters, the plot and the little quest they had to do to get ingredients for a potion to break a curse was fun. Per a typical romance it did have the third act breakup due to miscommunication. I was so glad when she learned about the curse, but sucks she suffered for so long and had all the weight on her shoulders just to find out the truth of said curse.
Cute romance story with characters you will come to care for. I was fully invested in their story and read it in one sitting. I can see this being a great read in the fall. It fits perfectly in a rotation of spooky reads and cozier fall reads.
I give this 3.5 stars; it was entertaining, cute, and original. For me, 4 stars would be a book that stays with me for a long time and 5 stars is a life changing read.
This ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange of my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and author for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Cute in the title really makes up to it, what a sweet romance!
Rose lives the dream of every romance book enthusiast: to have a romance book shop, where she helps people find love through the books and her magic. She works across the street from a gaming shop, owned by a cute nerd who hates her for her never ending clumsiness. And honestly, tho is a simple cliche prompt, there are many ways to screw up this type of story, with Morgan Elizabeth does not!
While reading it, I could help but think how I miss this type of whimsical magic on romances. Her pink sparkles every time she uses her magic is just the cherry on top along the funniest scenes and characters, her annoyed cat and the funny gramps ghost and all the enchantments. The book uses a simple formula for a good romance, but it's so well done you don't see time passing.
Their chemistry its out of this world perfectly made, the grumpy x sunshine, clumsy x stressed dynamics are perfectly made and the only thing I could think by the end its how much I want a movie made out of this, so I can watch every time the weather gets a little chill.
✨The Vibe Imagine Gilmore Girls with witches, cozy bookstores, a grumpy gamer boyfriend, magical curses, a ghost grandpa, and a cat stealing the spotlight every chance he gets.
This is the definition of a cozy fall read, and I have a feeling it'll become a seasonal favorite for a lot of readers.
📚 What the Book Is About (No Spoilers) Rosie Mayfield dreams of finding true love, but thanks to her family's curse, happily ever after has never really been an option.
In an attempt to finally break the curse, she accidentally summons a ghost who gives her one task: brew him a potion so he can finally move on.
The only problem? She needs help from the one person in town who can't stand her.
Jack Haggerty has spent years avoiding Rosie, but when his late grandfather unexpectedly reappears, he reluctantly agrees to help. As the two work together to break the curse, they begin to discover that first impressions—and long-held grudges—aren't always what they seem.
🖤 My Reading Experience This was my very first magical realism book, and now I'm wondering why it took me so long to pick one up.
I absolutely loved how seamlessly the magic blended into an otherwise normal world. It never felt over-the-top or overwhelming. Instead, it felt like everyday life had simply been sprinkled with a little extra magic, and honestly... I loved that.
The whole story is just incredibly warm. It's sweet, cozy, funny, and has just enough spice to keep things interesting without taking away from the comforting atmosphere. After reading so many epic fantasy books lately, this felt like the perfect palate cleanser.
Rosie and Jack were such a fun couple to follow. Rosie is sunshine in human form. She's optimistic, a little chaotic, incredibly kind, and exactly the type of person I wish I could be.
Meanwhile, Jack is much more reserved, sarcastic, and introverted. Which, if I'm being honest... I related to him a little more. 😂
Their grumpy x sunshine dynamic worked really well, and I loved how the quest to break the family curse naturally brought them closer together instead of making the romance feel forced.
The supporting characters also added so much charm to the story. Jack's grandpa was hilarious, Percy the cat completely stole my heart, just like Rosie's sisters, and together they added so much warmth and humor to an already lovable cast.
💭 What Didn't Fully Work for Me There honestly wasn't much that didn't work for me. The beginning is a tiny bit slower as everything gets established, and there were a few moments where the characters would spend quite a while thinking during conversations. Every now and then, I'd catch myself wondering, "Wait... what was the original question again?" 😂
The story is also fairly predictable, but personally, I don't think that's a bad thing. Most cozy romances are. Sometimes you don't read a romance to be shocked—you read it because you want to spend time with lovable characters and enjoy the journey. And that's exactly what this book delivers!
🔥 Tropes & Elements - Grumpy x sunshine - Enemies to lovers - Small-town romance - Magical realism - Cozy fall vibes
💔 Emotional Impact Coziness level: 10/10.
This book genuinely felt like wrapping yourself in a blanket with a warm drink while autumn leaves fall outside.
🫶 Final Thoughts Meet Cute Magic completely charmed me.
It's warm, funny, magical, and incredibly easy to read. I loved the blend of everyday life with just enough magic to make everything feel a little more whimsical, and Rosie and Jack were an absolute joy to spend time with.
If you're looking for an epic fantasy with complicated politics and massive battles, this isn't that book.
But if you're looking for something cozy, comforting, bookish, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face, I would absolutely recommend picking this up.
I have a feeling this is going to become the cozy fantasy recommendation every fall. And honestly? A gaming boyfriend and a bookish girlfriend might just be my new favorite (fictional) pairing.
📢 Disclosure: A huge thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an ARC of Meet Cute Magic. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
- Enemies to Lovers - Small Town Romance - Grumpy/Sunshine - Forced Proximity -LOTS of blushing -Miscommunication
Meet Cute Magic a cute was just what the title says. It's set in a cozy small town that's full of magic that not everyone knows about. That includes Jack Haggerty, who is into all things fantasy and magic, owning The Gaming Den right across the street from resident with, Rosie Mayfield. She owns bookstore, Meet Cute Magic. And those these two have been neighbors (both in business and the traditional sense) They've never seemed to click, Jack always seemingly grumpy and annoyed at Rosie's cheery and helpful presence. That is until Jack's entire reality comes crashing down when Rosie summons the ghost of Jack's dead grandfather, a warlock, to break a spell he cast on the female lineage of her family ages ago when her grandmother turned him down for a date. Not being able to find true love. Rosie's favorite books are those of the romance variety and her specialty magic is helping others find love through books ( a cruel twist of fate). If she sends his grandfather to other side, he promises to break the spell and all past love and hurt will be forgotten.
A little bit of breaking and entering for an ingredient at Jack's for the spell leads Rosie to introducing the reality of magic and his dead grandfather to Jack. But Jack, once he's able to wrap his head around the fictional fantasy magic hobby he dabbles in is real to an extent, he refuses to willing hand over what Rosie needs(important to the spell) unless she gives him a crash course on magic. The kicker is they have to gather and perform the spell on Halloween, 90 days away.
What Rosie doesn't know is Jack's annoyance with her isn't annoyance at all. Just attraction he doesn't know how to deal with. And their quest to to find the ingredients cracks at Jack's facade as time goes on having him whether he can go through with the spell knowing he'll lose her after everything is said and done, and worse, she'll forget their time together.
(Minor spoilers ahead) I gave this one four stars because it had me laughing from the beginning and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. Phillip, Jack's grandfather was hilarious and it was clear he was rooting for these two from the start. The build-up to Rosie and Jack finally giving into each other was great. Steamy in all the right ways as they agree to keep things to FWB up until they break the curse. Jack is shy and standoffish when it comes to new people due to his anxiety and it sometimes leads to miscommunication. Rosie is a typical eldest daughter, pushing her needs off to tend to others, never asking for help.
This is where things got a little messy for me. And these things might just be because of my ADHD so please feel free to take with a grain of salt!
We as the reader knew the deadline was coming up, the countdown was listed at the beginning of each chapter. But it felt like it was being constantly repeated. Multiple times during a chapter. I understand that it may have been for emphasis as both characters were struggling with their feelings.
There is a lot of blushing and shrugging. A LOT. It was cute but as the story went on, I was hoping for something else to convey the feeling of embarrassment or shyness for the characters.
Now as an eldest daughter myself, I could relate to Rosie so much when it came to failed relationships, just wanting to find her person but letting anyone in how she's felt or is currently feeling. And especially the self-sabotaging when things fell apart with Jack. It wasn't that I was annoyed at all, the girl has feelings and I've been there, but some of that chapter felt a little repetitive? And maybe that was Rosie working out her feelings as her and Jack fought.
Some of these things did pull me out for a second and I found myself having to reread a few sections to make sure I didn't miss anything. But overall, this was a fun and cozy read and great to add to your Fall TBR if you like all things autumn, Halloween and magic when the season rolls around! Thanks so much to Netgalley,
This was my very first ARC! thank you to Netgalley and Union Square & Co!
This book was so cute, whimsical, fun, and full of banter. BANTER! I loved the banter here so much. I love when characters have natural chemistry in movies, tv, books anything really. It makes them feel like real people to me. Watching Rosie and Jack banter back and forth was probably the main thing that had me kicking my feet and giggling. but the banter is not the only fun part. before I get into discussing the characters, lets talk setting. this is so Halloween Town coded. and I for one love it. I remember being younger and being in love with the concept of Halloween Town, and now i am 28 years old and have a grown up version of Halloween Town. The way Morgan writes is very cool. she has a way of making you feel like you are in the pages rather than just reading them. There were sometimes she would be describing things and I could feel/smell/and hear them. The cool breeze of the streets, the sweets from Rosie's sister's bakery, the jingle of the shop bells. Morgans writing is very interactive and I love that as a story telling device.
Now, let’s discuss our characters.
First we meet Rosie. we see her in the first scene as a girlfriend coming home to her current boyfriend cheating on her! I immediately was team Rosie no matter what because that man is trash! we soon learn our best friend Rosie is cursed. she's also a witch! Her mom had turned down a warlock when they were younger and he cursed the entire female line that if they ever tell their partners they love them, the relationship will end in a week after the confession. Rosie breaks down the times she has had her heart broken because she loved a man. this has happened since she was young. Rosie is the oldest of her 2 sisters. Poppy and Violet. when their mom died Rosie stepped in to be a mom and hid the curse from them. She protected them from relationships to protect their hearts. But, who protects Rosie's heart? Rosie decides after this last heartbreak she wants this curse BROKEN. she goes back into town to go to her magical romance bookstore and figure out how to make this curse be gone forever. This is when she summons the warlock who made the curse, Phillip. This is how we meet Jack.
Jack is the Game Den shop owner across the street from Magic Meet Cute (Rosie's store.) He famously hates Rosie (yeah okay.) Jack is tall, nerdy, hot man with glasses (need him.) But, how does he get wrapped into the curse... well he has something she needs of course! Jack happens to be Phillip's grandson! Phillip has a list of things Rosie needs to collect to make the spell to break the curse, help Phillip pass on, and it has to be done by halloween... 31 days away. So ingredient one, a family flask... owned by... JACK! Rosie is a clumsy girlie and tries to go over to his store but he is very much no ma'am leave please you always break things. she's trying to make him like her so she can ask for the flask but she breaks a statue he had made and he sends her away. later that night he catches her breaking into the store trying to steal the flask. for not calling the police she has to prove to him she is a witch, and his grandpa's ghost is in her apartment.
and that's how we get this team up. Jack says he will help her and she has to let him. they go on this fun adventure to collect these ingredients to make this potion to break the curse. We get cute banter, slight hands being held, kisses, steam, and fun dates. These two are slowly falling in love. and I will not give more since you HAVE to read this book. you are missing out on one of the best Halloween Romance's I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Please, whatever you do. GET! YOUR! HANDS! ON! THIS! BOOK!
I want to start by saying that I read this book as an ARC sent to me by NetGalley. This has to be the 7th arc by Morgan Elizabeth that I have read; however, I have read all but three books in her entire catalog, so I think I can say I’m pretty accustomed to her writing style. I don’t want to be too harsh because this is an arc copy, and I know that we still have two months for changes to be made; however, I want to say that this is the worst arc that I have ever received from her books. Therefore, my review will be preliminary until the final copy of this book is published, and I can compare and see if any of my thoughts have changed. I say this because this book feels like it’s 90% Morgan Elizabeth and still has 10% to be finalized in her voice.
We meet Rosie, a young witch and bookstore owner who is also a firm believer in true love. She shares many qualities with Morgan’s other FMCs: quirky, fun-loving, funny, and overall adorable. JACK is our grumpy next-door neighbor, very practical and not one to believe in things until he can see them. He’s a very logical person who needs to study every angle before he believes in it. This makes him the perfect opposite of Rosie. This is very on-brand for Morgan’s romantic-couple type. However, unlike Morgan’s previous writing, I feel that meet cute. Magic is very long and sort of rambles on uncertain points. While most of her other books, even arc copies that I receive, which are usually sent out two weeks ahead of the publication date, are fast-paced and get to the point. Her other books leave you wanting to finish them in one sitting, without ever wanting to put them down. However, this one just felt like it lagged in certain parts. I think it needs a bit more editing, which is normal since we are still two months out from the publication date. The main ingredients for this romcom are already in place; it just needs fine-tuning.
Now onto the actual plot: I loved it. This shouldn’t be a shock to anyone who has followed any of my reviews of Morgan’s books; I think this woman can do no wrong. In very Morgan fashion, this book made me chuckle, it had me swooning, and it was spicy (although it did have a lot fewer descriptive spicy scenes than almost all of her previous books. Just saying.). We have Rosie, a bookshop owner with the gift of helping people find their one true love through her Magic and book recommendations. Rosie has two younger sisters, Violet and Poppy, and each owns their own business and possesses magic of their own. I’m sure we will be getting their books in the future to see what shenanigans they get into, and I can't wait to see what their love stories look like. Rosie helped raise her two younger sisters after her parents' passing, and now that her sisters are older, all she wants is to find true love. However, Rosie has the worst luck with finding significant others and tends to convince herself that she’s actually falling in love, imposing the feeling on herself and whoever her partner is at the time, without actually feeling true love. Three years ago, JACK moved in across the street and opened a business in front of Rosie’s. Rosie is a ray of sunshine, wanting everyone in town to fall in love with her and her bubbly personality. This book has very Stars Hollow/Gilmore Girls vibes, along with your Disney Channel Halloween Classics, like Halloweentown. JACK was annoyed by Rosie's bubbly, sunny personality from the moment they met and had spent the past three years either avoiding her or scowling at her. This has made Rosie even more determined to become friends with him. Now Rosie is on a mission to find true love for herself, and, through a series of unfortunate events, fate has brought them together to finish this quest. JACK is not thrilled about the idea, but, as I stated earlier, he is a practical man and does not believe in Magic until he sees it firsthand and can logically rationalize it. Therefore, he is stuck with Rosie for the next month and a half to finish this quest. Obviously, they fall in love, and JACK has the difficult task of proving to Rosie, in the end, that his feelings for her are authentic and not fabricated by her Magic. Again, like almost every one of Morgan’s books, this is a quick read guaranteed to give you a dose of dopamine through laughter and overall fuzzy good vibes. I absolutely recommend it, especially for those rainy fall days, stay in your house on the couch in the afternoons. It’s a quick read and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
I am SO happy that Morgan is doing her first trad pub, and that it’s a paranormal romance! This is something totally new for her, but I just thought it was so good. I genuinely think she may have found her niche because this might be my favorite Morgan Elizabeth book yet.
If Charmed, Gilmore Girls, Ghosts, and Practical Magic somehow had a baby, it would be this book. Three magical sisters, a cozy small town that gave me major Stars Hollow vibes, hilarious ghosts, romance, magic, mystery, and just enough chaos to keep things fun the entire time... see what I mean? It felt nostalgic and familiar in the best possible way, and I loved every second of it. I really enjoyed how it made me feel, which is important to me in the romance genre, because sometimes it can feel tired and overdone and same old, same old. This was refreshing!
I loved the premise of the family curse and that the one person Rosie needs to help her break it is the one man in town who supposedly doesn’t like her. Although honestly, that is pretty debatable because it was pretty clear Jack had a thing for her all along and was doing his best to avoid dealing with it. Their dynamic was so much fun! Rosie owns the cutest bright pink romance bookstore while Jack owns the dark, moody gaming shop across the street. They are literal opposites, and I loved every minute of the grumpy x sunshine energy between them.
The ghosts absolutely were wonderful and definitely a highlight for me. Phillip was so freaking funny, and Percy the cat had me laughing too! Between the magic, the mystery, the adventure, and all the nonstop hijinks, there was never a dull moment in this book. This was such a fun adventure from start to finish and just a genuinely feel good read.
I also loved Jack’s skepticism about magic. Rosie is completely all in, while Jack spends so much of the book trying to rationalize everything around him. I loved that he slowly opens himself up and it was one of my favorite parts. He starts out socially anxious, nerdy, and very much a keep to himself type of guy, and Rosie was exactly what he needed. The worldbuilding and the lore surrounding the magic in this is also fantastic, and has so much potential in future books.
“This is pure magic. Kind of like Rosie, I am beginning to realize.”
And Rosie’s speech was something I LOVED. It gave me such Notting Hill vibes and was so impactful. One of my favorite quotes in the book was: “Sometimes the most magical things are the most ordinary ones.” It fit the entire story perfectly!
And yes, Morgan absolutely delivered on the spice, but I expected nothing less from the queen herself. It was so good, so hot, and I loved the way the magical elements were woven into the romance. It felt uniquely Morgan while still being something completely new.
The twists at the end had me laughing because they were both surprising and one of those moments where I was immediately like WELL DUH! Of course, it made so much sense. It wrapped everything up in such a satisfying way and I felt like it was a great way to go in a different direction and surprise us as readers.
I just really, really loved this book! It was cozy, funny, magical, romantic, and exactly the kind of escape I needed and would make the perfect fall season read, especially since it is centered around Halloween.
Also, that little glimpse of Vi’s story made me need it immediately, but alas, I must be patient. It gave me major Tis the Season for Revenge vibes, and I am SO here for it! If you know, you know. ;)
Thank you to NetGalley, Morgan Elizabeth, and Union Square & Co. for the eARC of this book.
Thank you to Union Square & Co. and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The more I think about this book, the more I love it.
Seriously. The farther away I get from finishing it, the more convinced I become that this was a five-star read for me.
And here's the thing: I do not like magical realism. Like... ever. It's just never been my thing. So imagine my surprise when I absolutely devoured this book and immediately wanted more.
The second I saw Morgan Elizabeth was writing a magical romance, I knew I needed it. Then I started reading and somehow it managed to exceed all of my expectations.
Rosie Mayfield is a witch cursed to never find lasting love. Every relationship ends in heartbreak, so when she summons the ghost responsible for cursing her family generations ago, she makes a deal to finally break the cycle. The only problem? She has to work alongside Jack Haggerty, the grumpy owner of the gaming shop across the street who has spent years getting under her skin.
And honestly? I was obsessed.
This book has witches, curses, pink magic, a ghost with zero respect for personal boundaries, a cat who couldn't care less about anyone's plans, and a grumpy-sunshine romance that had me smiling the entire time.
Rosie was such an easy character to root for. Despite everything she's been through, she still believes in love and continues helping other people find their happily-ever-afters even when she feels like she'll never get one herself. Meanwhile, Jack is skeptical, stubborn, and determined to explain away everything magical happening right in front of him.
Watching him slowly lose that battle was incredibly entertaining.
What surprised me most was how much fun I had reading this. Every time I thought I was going to put it down, something else would happen that made me want to keep going. Between the curse, the ghostly chaos, the romance, and all the magical shenanigans, I flew through it.
And can we talk about the vibes for a second?
This book feels like wrapping yourself in a blanket, grabbing a seasonal drink, and spending an afternoon somewhere cozy while magic quietly exists in the background. It has that perfect balance of humor, heart, romance, and whimsy that made it impossible not to fall in love with.
What to Expect: ✨ Witchy Romance ✨ Grumpy x Sunshine ✨ Family Curse ✨ Ghostly Chaos ✨ Next-Door Neighbors ✨ Small Town Charm ✨ Forced Proximity ✨ Cozy Fall Vibes ✨ Magical Mishaps ✨ One Very Unbothered Cat
I genuinely can't believe I'm saying this, but Morgan Elizabeth may have single-handedly changed my mind about magical realism.
If you're looking for a cozy, magical romance that will make you laugh, smile, and completely fall under its spell, add this one to your TBR immediately.
I would like to preface this review by thanking the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this arc copy. When reading the initial book blurb for Meet Cute Magic, I couldn’t help but feel like I was the perfect target demographic for this book. It follows a typical cozy romance blueprint. A small town with all of its residents up in each other’s business, a secret witch family with multiple sisters (for a future book series expansion to follow of course) and a first daughter care about everyone else first archetype main character. This book tries so hard to be cute, and I do like the majority of the author's ideas. But I hate to say that it gave me the impression of trying a bit too hard. Let’s start with the aspects of the book that I enjoyed: The countdown to Halloween timeline related to the story and made sense. I'm a sucker for when a character gradually, against their better judgment, begrudgingly falls in love and main male love interest Jack played this part well. Like the main female character Rosie, I love a grand romantic gesture and when Jack wrote their entire romantic history into a book, so that she wouldn't forget if her potion achieved its desired results, was just the sweetest way to show that he cared. My constructive criticism is as follows: The dialogue could be improved upon in places. It strikes me as too casual. In my arc eBook I have two direct passages highlighted where the words “blah blah blah” are a direct quote said by characters. I know that the book is presented as a simple cute small-town romance, and I don’t expect super a sophisticated writing style. However, I feel that such an informal tone downgrades the author's writing and the book reader’s experience. A random personal annoyance I noted was the author's repetitive use of the term "ass" by both fmc and mmc. Either when referring to themselves or admiring the other's anatomy. The term glutes or even butt could have been used instead. At the start of the book, I had a suspicion that this intentional word choice was foreshadowing some more intense spicy scenes forthcoming. Yup, that turned out to be correct. Oh, and the pet name Jack attack gave me the ick. I've noticed the current trend of cozy romance books adding a few excessively spicy scenes lately. And it confuses me. I call them spicy speed bump scenes. To me, it throws off the pacing of the books. Would it be possible gradually progress from sweet to spicy scenes? I prefer a gradual build, not spice whiplash. I think that a lot of authors have difficulty with that task not just Morgan Elizabeth in particular. In short, I preferred the sweeter love story building aspects of this book over the spicy moments. Side note: I noted a handful of syntax errors while reading, which isn’t something I am often hyper aware of. Another round of edits would be helpful to iron out these kinks before the book is published.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a cute and Autumn/Halloween themed read to get you in the mood for the season 🍂🎃 I also agree with the other reviews that it is reminiscent of Practical Magic. Small town, cozy vibes where the paranormal are hidden among the humans and the witches quietly perform their magic in small, everyday tasks.
Rosie - a witch who owns a romance bookstore, where her books will help you to find true love. Her family is cursed to where every time they fall in love, it ends in disaster. Rosie is desperate to break the curse after having a long list of failed relationships.
Jack - her neighbor who owns a video game store who hates Rosie and her sisters. There is always trouble that follows them around.
Rosie summons Jack’s dead grandfather (the one who supposedly casted the curse on Rosie’s family) and he gives Rosie a task to gather ingredients for a potion for him and he will break her curse. Jack, desperate to understand his grandfather’s magical background, insists on joining Rosie on this quest. What ensues is your basic “rivals to lovers” trope romance.
I have major qualms about the story building and plot here. I was excited to see Rosie and Jack go on misadventures to find these potion ingredients. There were SOME chaotic events but they ultimately fell flat. Most of this book was mainly talking and conversations, not enough doing and showing.
I also dislike the “friends with benefits” trope and hated how that developed here. There was this constant angst going where Rosie and Jack did not face their feelings and would rather just jump in bed. It eventually led to a point of Jack making a very selfish decision that I was really disappointed in.
There was also inconsistencies in the characters. What do you mean this woman who is very aware of a love curse has a HUGE LONG LIST OF EXES!! When would she ever learn?? She knew that every time she said “I love you” something bad was going to happen. And she did it over and over anyways?? Maybe just don’t tell them I love you?? I know the ending explains things but still, it felt we were in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World because we kept running into Rose’s exes!! I think she dated half the town.
Jack was also inconsistent. He was described as nerdy and socially awkward. His pov would say that he doesn’t date because he doesn’t think girls will like him or like his hobbies. Yet it later reveals he was named as the best flirter in high school and we also run into his super HOT ex girlfriend. Make it make sense please??
By the end, I realized that Rosie is very gullible and there is a million misunderstandings that has caused her unnecessary angst. I swear she is the villain to her own story. 🤦♀️
This is a cute, cozy, and magical story with fun and whimsical elements. If you’re looking for unnecessary drama and the messiest romance and angst then this one is for you!
Thank you to Union Square & Co. and NetGalley for the arc!
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc!!
this was actually so good. i went into this not entirely in the mood for romance but the moment i started i was so sat from start to end. it's my first book by morgan elizabeth and will definitely not be the last. also, kudos to the cover artist because this is such(!!) a gorgeous cover.
i love magical realism with romance, any sort of romance with a splash of magic. so for this to be not only that, but a small town, sunshine x grumpy, bookshop au??? i ate this up. rosie and jack are so perfect for each other (spoilers?? haha) that it was so fun to read. i was invested from their first banter on page. the chemistry was so real.
yes we all been knew that jack was only perpetually annoyed at her because she flustered him and he couldn't get a word in edge wise. i thought them slowly becoming friends through the course of the quest to gather potion ingredients for jack's grandpa was nice, because in all honesty the foundation of a solid relationship is always a friendship. and of course, the kiss bond scenes. super hot and the yearning!! the yearning that didn't fade when the bond did.
as a book girlie, i am surely not the only one who understood rosie. her love for romance and fantasy and tropes and book boyfriends. the whole gamer boyfriend and reader girlfriend thing, made them perfect for each other. jack is someone who complements her, the introvert to her extrovert, someone who helps her ask for what she wants rather than constantly giving. and of course the best part. he reads her book recommendations!! oh my god.
spoilers from here. knowing that rosie could lose her memories of him, he wrote a damn book of every moment they shared for her. he left notes and video for himself in case it happened to him too. that is true love y'all. the moment it was brought up, it was obvious jack is her perfect match.
"i know in my gut you were made to be mine, and i was made to be yours, to take care of you, to give you a safe place to be soft. but i also don't want you to forget us. to forget the very first iteration of us."
"he tells her everything there is to know about him and his family, and he answers even her almost-too-personal questions. that's when i know for sure that jack haggerty is meant to be mine."
and of course the family. i love rosie, vi and poppy's closeness as sisters because rarely there is not a big drama between sisters in books and i love that for them?? and by extension their mother too.
and of course phillip the ghost and jack. wbk there was no real curse but he loves his grandson, and he gets to stay earthside and eat food now.
will definitely read author's backlist soon. and looking forward to vi's book!! hope poppy gets one too. ♡
