Infinity Squad #2

Infinity Squad 2

Rate this book
It's a rough universe out there. To escape a murderous alien planet and even more murderous chain of command, Second Lieutenant Jonah Forrest had to fake his own death, by actually killing himself and his men. With grenades. (It wasn't his best plan ever.) But now a cloned, resurrected, and promoted First Lieutenant Forrest must deal with an even tougher peacekeeping. Because the aliens in charge of the gates between stars, the Benefactors, don't want their wormholes used to commit interstellar genocide. Well, not the bad kind of genocide. And the only weapon the Benefactors want their peacekeepers toting is the occasional authority to use harsh words. Will Lieutenant Forrest be able to keep his finger off the trigger long enough to learn that true strength comes from the size of his character, not his caliber? Will this team of rebels be forced to finally respect the laws of intergalactic society instead of breaking them? And will Infinity Squad be able to keep the body count low enough to keep their jobs, stop totalitarian societies and pacifist alien mobsters from starting an interplanetary war, and prevent the universe's ultimate weapon from falling into the wrong alien paws? No. No they will not.

It was 3 years and 4 months ago when I read the first of these books. I had no idea there was another.

But what an other! How cool! I know, it's old-hat, splitting the viewpoint and all that. But it so worked! And chapter 22? Wowzers. What a stunt to pull, with rip-roaring enjoyably military sci-fi results. Obviously, you have to have read the first, and even more obviously, you have to enjoy this type of work. But if you do, you will.

Exhausting to read because I could not put it down. I hope the author won't write a book 3 bc then I'd lost more sleep following Ann Marie around. I did wish to read a bit more about the manatees though. I sensed some teasing of all the places Zaz could go for trade too. There's a solid foundation for this series to continue.

Another 4++ read (the current average is 4.25 stars and that's a pretty good rating)! If this is Ghose's "magnum opus" - and I don't see any new books from him listed - then he has done himself and his brief writing career very proud.

There are in fact several stories included in IS2 that most authors I'm sure would have found some way to split into a multi-tome series. Maybe not as 'stretched' and complete as Scalzi's 'Old Man's War' series (keeping in mind one of those books was just a retelling of a previous chapter). But kudos must be given for holding this extremely complex and multi-layered CLASSIC sci-fi epic all together! It truly has a bit of just about every aspect of scifi you could look for (no spoilers, sorry) and it just works again and again and again!

If I had any one MAIN COMPLIMENT to give, it would be that if I ever decided to finally write my own book in this genre, I would use this as a guide. The story is strong, the writing is strong, the characters are strong, the entire galatic clusterfuck that this is all centered around works out perfectly and damn if we don't bring into it some of Earth's own current and recent historical aspects into it as well. Sseriously, the Korean Navy bit was just awesome and you know that one Earth general was based on some of the political jackasses of the 2000s as well! And that doesn't even include how the Japanese art of kintsugi plays such a cool role!

So if you're looking for AI (check), role-playing-esque tales (check), very cool and convincing aliens (check check and check again - seriously, making them RESEMBLE known species helps keep them in your minds eye so much better than some bizarre, almost unimaginable construction!), an evil empire (or three or maybe even four) not to mention hints of some of the best scifi series from TV and the movies from the past 50 years, well, you'll see those influences here for sure! Oh and did we mention mysterious machinations and other conundrums? Probably not because I don't know what half of those words mean...

I'm just sorry to see that there are no more Ghose books to read. Seriously, besides the mentioned Scalzi series and Jim C. Hines' 'Janitors in Space' books (just play along, ok?), this was some of the best 'pure' scifi I've read in a while! Oh well, if you're going to write 2 books in your life, you should make them this fun! Enjoy!

Good as the first just different

This was also a good book. Not as humorous as the first one but with all the other assets. I deducted a star for the way the story switched between who point of view was narrating. I got loss there a couple of times going "Why would X say that... Oh it is the other guy talking now!"

Best Kindle book I've read in a while.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something different in the science fiction military category. The book was funny and wasn't the usual superhero crap that passes for writing these days.

Well

I did so enjoy this book, mostly, but that was just my impatience to know what happened next. I will try any future books as well.
