The Weight of Silence: Faultlines Book One

Rate this book
Some boys fall through the cracks. Others are shoved.

Jacob Keller has spent years learning how to take up as little space as possible. Living in his uncle's Baltimore apartment, he survives on sporadic meals, inconsistent seizure medication, and a vigilance that never fully switches off. Music—composed on a battered keyboard late at night—is the only place where the noise in his head briefly quiets.

Logan Weston lives at the opposite extreme. Valedictorian, Type 1 diabetic, and the student everyone expects perfection from, he treats exhaustion as discipline and ignores the warning signs his body keeps sending. Control, he believes, is the same thing as safety.

At Edgewood High School, the two boys have spent three years circling each other—connection followed by retreat, care offered and refused. Jacob doesn't believe he deserves help. Logan doesn't know how to stop giving it.

When Jacob disappears into the city without medication or shelter, the consequences ripple outward, exposing the fragile systems both boys have been relying on. As the truth unravels, Jacob and Logan find themselves caught in the quiet war between what's easy and what's right, between doing nothing and doing something, even if it comes at a cost.

The Weight of Silence is a searing contemporary novel about what happens when the systems meant to protect children fail them, and what it means to finally be seen by someone who chooses not to look away.

Perfect for readers who connect
Gritty, character-driven contemporary fiction
Stories of institutional failure and survival
Slow-burn emotional connection without a romantic arc

Not every silence is chosen. Not every witness stays quiet.

Content This novel contains depictions of emotional abuse, neglect, homelessness, self-harm, suicidal ideation, medical trauma, and both mental and physical health struggles that may be distressing to some readers. In addition, while there are no scenes of racial violence, racial tension and issues of race are addressed throughout.

This is my first book review. I could not put this book down. The character development was what kept me needing to find out more. The topics addressed are varied and have depth. There were a couple of moments that were detailed enough that I felt like I was there. I am looking forward to the next book.
