Ebonhart: MM Warlock Romance, second chance, spicy, Prophecy

Rate this book
Whispers steal sight, and hearts forget their keepers.

There’s an age-old saying that still holds true to this Be careful what you wish for. Killian should have been more careful, but then again, I doubt he knew what he was bargaining for. He merely thought it was only words to keep the burning desire away. He never thought it would come true.
When Killian’s familiar, Ash, vanishes into thin air, he all but loses his mind. This sets him on a mission to find his familiar and bring him back home. However, it’s not as simple as he had thought it would be. Especially when no one seems to remember who Ash is.
Time begins to seep through Killian’s fingers, and the moon phase grows closer. Will Killian be able to find Ash in time? Will they be able to bond before it’s too late? The fate of magic depends on it, so here’s to hoping.

For fans of high-stakes MM romance, dark fantasy worlds, intense chemistry, and characters who would burn the world down for each other.

Where doubt erodes connection

Killian and his familiar Ash have not fully accepted their bond in the way they both want but fear and doubt have kept them here.

Imagine waking up after having a fight) disagreement and your familiar was just gone. Not like they just left early but almost as if they never existed to begin with. Unfortunately for Killian this is his reality.

I really like the approach for this pairing as it was so different. They were already mostly bonded and someone thought they could do it better. This was a race against the clock to determine what was stronger - the spell or the memories.

I loved seeing how much Killian was willing to put into this and even when things were at it's worst he still offered choice and never forced anything.

I appreciate that the focus on this book was just this one couple and the people who were helping or hindering. The books are short and can't fit all the extra things as well as the main focus.

You know that feeling when your magical soulmate disappears and you have to tear apart the universe to get them back? No? Just Killian? Cool cool cool.

Ebonhart said “raise the stakes” and then proceeded to emotionally body-slam me.

Killian’s quest to reclaim Ash isn’t just a rescue mission it’s a full-blown, twisty, heart-clenching spiral into memory, manipulation, and the kind of love that refuses to die quietly.

This book does not waste time. The plot moves, the twists hit, and just when you think you can breathe? Nope. Another obstacle. Another revelation. Another emotional gut punch.

Killian and Ash? Elite. Their connection is layered with love, trust, history, and sacrifice. It’s not surface-level romance it’s soul-deep, destiny-laced devotion. The kind that makes you feral when it’s threatened.

The magical universe expands beautifully here. It’s immersive without being overwhelming, and every setting heightens the tension. You can feel the danger humming under the surface.

Second chance romance, hurt/comfort

Killian and Ash suffering through the pain of memory loss was so painful and heartbreaking to see.
Killian honestly did need that nudge to solidify the truth for him that he was trying to deny.
The epiloge was absolutely lovely and I'm definitely waiting for the next installment.

I got to read this as an ARC.
How should I go about beginning this? I think I would like to speak of the previous Mystic's Familiars book that I ARC read for. That way, it will give insight into the review for this story without just saying go review my previous review. So my previous ARC reading of one of the Mystic's Familiars book (Vexley) centered around how I just felt like so much was being done in so little space. These stories are always short and sweet-- always a joy to read. Though with Vexley, I felt almost like the romance between Jace and Raze was a bit more forced. It wasn't as if I didn't enjoy the story--- it just could have been much better. It jumped around too much and had too many POVs, and as I said previously, it had too much going on with it.
NOW, let's get to the actual review for Ebonhart with that in mind.
Ebonhart might be another installment in the Mystic's Familiars series, but I honestly liked this book much better than Vexley. When Vexley, as I stated, seemed like it had too much going on, Ebonhart had one straight storyline that played through the entire book. The romance between Killian and Ash wasn't forced either. When there was spice, it wasn't the in-your-face type that seemed like that was the main purpose of the book, not the plot. Ebonhart was indeed the superior of the installments.
A problem was identified, flashbacks were used tastefully, and spice was done tastefully. When the epilogue does give Nyx's POV-- the majority of the story was done via the POV of Killian and Ash. There wasn't an overload of what was going on; the epilogue does set up for the next installment perfectly. Which I am very much ready for.
I'm very happy that Ebonhart doesn't focus too much on the side characters of the book. When additional characters such as Alaric, Nyx, and Jared are used in the story. They are used only enough to drive the story and do not take a front row seat as they did with Vexley. I think this is one of my reasons I preferred Ebonhart over Vexley completely.

Ebonhart, the third book in the Mystic’s Familiars series, ended up being such a compelling read and honestly felt fresh compared to the previous installment. The story follows Killian and his familiar Ash, whose bond is put under serious strain when memories begin to fade, and that alone creates this constant emotional tension throughout the book as Killian struggles to remember Ash while Ash slowly starts losing his memories of Killian too. It’s such a simple but powerful conflict and it kept me really invested in their relationship the whole time. The story stays focused without getting bogged down in too many distractions, and I really appreciated how the flashbacks were used carefully to deepen the emotional side of the story without feeling overwhelming. The romance develops naturally as the plot unfolds, and even the intimate moments feel like they belong in the story rather than interrupting it. I also liked that the side characters like Alaric, Nyx, and Jared were used more as support to move the story along instead of taking over the narrative, which kept the focus where it should be on Killian and Ash. Most of the story is told through their perspectives, with a small shift at the end that nicely sets up the next book, and by the time I reached the epilogue I was already excited for what comes next. It definitely ended up being my favourite of the series so far, especially compared to Vexley, mostly because the story stayed tighter and more centered on the characters that mattered most.

While Ebonhart is the third installment in the Mystic’s Familiars series, it manages to offer a fresh and surprising narrative that stands out as a highly compelling read. The story centers on the high-stakes dynamic between Killian and his familiar, Ash, whose bond is threatened by a tragic loss of memories. As Killian fights to remember Ash, and Ash begins to lose his own recollection of Killian, the story maintains a consistent and engaging tension that is both emotionally resonant and easy to follow.
The book benefits from a singular, focused storyline that drives the plot forward without unnecessary distractions. The author handles the technical execution with precision; flashbacks are used tastefully to deepen the narrative, and the romance is developed organically, with moments of intimacy that feel like natural extensions of the plot rather than interruptions to it. I appreciated how the author utilized side characters such as Alaric, Nyx, and Jared strictly as catalysts for the plot. By keeping them in supporting roles, the story stays firmly centered on the relationship between Killian and Ash, giving their journey the space it deserves and maintaining a tight, well-balanced pace.
With a compelling epilogue that shifts to Nyx’s perspective to set the stage for the next installment, Ebonhart is a cohesive and exciting read that has left me thoroughly prepared for what comes next.

Where book one of the Mystic's Familiar series, "Vexley", reflected Jace Vexley's chaotic nature, book two "Ebonhart"is single minded, all about control. Killian Ebonhart never wants his cat familiar, Ash, to feel that he's not an equal in their relationship. Unable to admit he loves his grumpy cat, even to himself, he leaves their familiar bond vulnerable. Marius Blackveil takes advantage and creates a spell that not only destroys the bond, but removes the pair's memories of each other.
"I scream like something being skinned alive from the inside, because that's exactly what this feels like." (Ash, p57). Marius plucks the memories like pulling a loose thread from a sweater. It's painful, and the harder Ash tries to hold on, the more he loses. Despicable, horrible, insidious, that chapter had me in tears.
Does being fated mates take away choice? It's a "which came first, the chicken or the egg" conundrum. Jennifer Carter's resolution has pining and angst. And some whinging on Killian's part.
Fast paced, and quite the emotional read (for me). Ms. Carter takes that second chance trope and sets it on it's head. What will Kai and Onyx bring us? I can't wait.
I received an advanced copy of this ebook and this is my review.

At the end of Vexley you see Killian rush in, in a panic as Ash had disappeared, problem was that no one remembered Ash.
This had a different feel than the previous books in the series. From the start you could feel how anxious Killian and Ash were at being separated, the fear of forgetting and Killian's regret at never bonding.
Having dual POV and multiple timelines gave you the whole story, seeing how they first met, who was behind the disappearance and the consequences if it went wrong.
This story showed how this found family worked well together, still loved Nyx's snarkiness and he did provide the humour in this story, but the stars were Killian and Ash and how love and determination won.
With Kai and Onyx next, I can't wait to see how this series develop.

The story is well known. This is book 3, but still quite a surprise. The story of Killian and Ash. Ash who is Killian's familiar, but is not recognized as such by him. And then no one knows who Ash is. No one knows him and Killian must do everything he can not to forget Ash. And Ash, little by little, loses the memories he has of Killian. The story is exciting and easy to read. Very curious about the other stories.

**ARC review**

Where do i even begin.. this series is becoming one of my favourites. I was lucky enough to read vexley and this one before they were release, and they have both been incredible. I am beyond excited to read the next one.

I wasn’t expecting to like ash and killian as much as i liked jace and raze, but how can you not like these two. The grump cat familiar, and the confused hard in himself warlock. They balance each other out, and deserved their happy ending.

A well written, tense story as the main character tries to find his familiar, Ash. It is a good read but not a relaxing one as nobody seems to remember the familiar. This book was a different style to others in the series and seemed to start in the middle of Ash disappearing, which was a bit strange.

This is the third book in this series and while it could be read as a standalone it’s much better as a series. The world building is amazing and the characters are all so interesting. I really enjoyed this story and I can’t wait for more.

Ash + Killian
So this starts off with Ash missing. While it's heartbreaking to see these two separated it gives Killian clarity in his feelings towards Ash. Ash was such a loveable grump. It was hard to read about how hard Ash fought to keep his memories with Killian. Killian speaking from the heart at the end was so emotional. Hope to see more of them in the future. I just wished there was more of a magical battle but understood why there couldn't be as Killian's magic at the time was unbalanced.
