I've hated Cavin McCarthy since the day he made me cry in a school closet.

He was my tormentor. My nightmare. The cruel boy who turned my name into a punchline and my life into hell.

Now? He's my fiancé.

An arranged marriage neither of us wanted, brokered by families who deal in blood and power. I'd refuse if I could. But my sister is dying, and the McCarthy's hold the key to saving her life.

So I'll walk down the aisle. I'll say the vows. I'll become Mrs. Cavin McCarthy.

But I'll never forgive him.

Except... the monster I remember isn't the man standing before me now. The boy who destroyed me has become someone who fights for me. Protects me. Touches me like I'm something precious instead of broken.

And when his hands are on my throat, his voice rough in my ear, I'm not thinking about revenge anymore.

I'm only thinking about surrender.

always have pretty high expectations for Jane Henry because she’s an amazing writing and as always she did not disappoint. This book was such a dark and wild journey and I was so along for the ride! It full of suspense, tension and lots of good smut. This plot was so intense, I love an arranged marriage romance but it hits even better when he bullied her in high school and they hate each other. There’s a mystery element to it as well, and as the tension builds Im sitting on the edge of my seat clutching my kindle extremely tight! The plot twists were incredible and I honestly host love how everything hit together. It never felt like “oh this part has too much plot too little romance” or “why is there so much romance I wanna know what happens?” Because she’s just an amazing author and there’s this perfect balance between plot and romance. Their chemistry though? It is off the charts. The banter and tension from beginning to end was addicting and I loved them from start to finish. Also the heroine is slightly neurodivergent which adds so much complexity to her character, as someone slightly neurodivergent, I liked the ways he was portrayed, because most of the time… neurodivergence is not obvious, it’s in the little things that do a lot. And gosh I loved Cavin.. yes he’s a little bit of an asshole at the start because you bullied her of course she told on you?? But watching him realise how gone he is for her really was the sweetest thing. The man is the definition of WHIPPED, he has his guards sending hourly updates on her just a week after they met again. He’s also a fighter… so he’s hawt as hell and I also loved his character development. I loved a bunch of the side characters too and PLEASE i need the next book to be Bridget and Declan!!!! There’s so much potential there! I enjoyed this book so much, and it might be a new favourite of mine. I give this a 5/5

I cannot properly express how much I love Erin and Cavin. Erin is a phenomenal character and whlie it isn’t specially said, she’s neurodivergent. Her anxiety and panic attacks were authentic and written with care. She uses grounding techniques such as tapping and counting to calm herself. Erin sees the world in black and white, but struggles to understand people because they live in the grey. She is strong and capable, and with someone in her corner for the first time she’s able to be herself. Cavin is dangerous, commanding, and intuitive, but also kind and protective. He isn’t the boy that used to torment her in secondary school. Cavin survived a grueling upbringing that made him the man he is today, duty bound and loyal to his family. Except now, he’s keeping a secret from his family. He’s being forced to pay a tribute and doesn’t even know to whom. Erin’s younger sister is very sick with a grim diagnoisis. She would do anything for her sister, including agreeing to an arranged marriage to her former bully, Cavin. The arranged marriage might be a bussiness arragnement for Cavin, but for her, its the only way she can save her sister’s life. Cavin isn’t a fan of Erin either, she constantly got him in trouble in school and hated her ‘Little Miss Perfect’ attitude. Now older, he notices things about Erin for the first time, he picks up on her anxiety and is amazed with how she thinks. Initially she can’t forgive Cavin for how he treated her, to say they had a rough start would be an understatement. They butted heads and fought each other and their attraction towards each other. Erin holds out, but when Cavin apologizes and puts in the effort to get to know her, they develop a deep emotional connection. This was a tension filled slow burn, but when they catch flame, it heats up fast. The mystery of the tributes unfurls in a way that is maddeningly addictive. It appears as the background story to their romance but it all comes to a head at the end. They have quiet the journey with twists and turns but they work together to find out who’s behind everything. Even though their world is brutal and unforgiving, they fight for each other and choose to love each other everyday. Jane has written a devastatingly beautiful romance with an intricate plot, details galore, and layered characters.

“I’m being honest.” “I know.” He opens his eyes. “And that’s exactly the problem. Because when you’re honest like that, when you look at me like you’re looking at me right now, all I want to do is give you everything you’re asking for.”

This audiobook is mind blowing because the author wrote it to be—every command, pause and power shift crafted with such precision that the narrators don’t perform it… they unleash it.

This is wicked… in the most devastating way possible.

From the first page, this story grips you hard and never lets go.

What begins as childhood cruelty spirals into heart-gripping love , brutal twists, and shocking revelations that keep tightening the hold.

Cavin McCarthy is an ultimate dark book-boyfriend-control incarnate.
Ruthless , strategic, devastatingly dominant and dangerously intuitive. He reads Erin with unnerving accuracy. He knows her sensitivities, her limits, the way her body reacts before her mind catches up. He knows exactly when to push, when to restrain and how to unravel her completely without ever rushing her.

And the girl he once broke? Erin is no longer fragile.
She is innocent yet bold, intelligent, quietly fearless—fire wrapped in scars.
Without realizing it, she terrifies Cavin.
She sees him.
Challenges him.
Becomes his weakness. And instead of fighting it, he claims it—possessive, unapologetic and completely focused on her.

Bound by an arranged marriage forged in blood and desperation to save her dying sister, Erin is betrayed and dragged into the McCarthy world, where loyalty is lethal and truths hit harder every time they surface. Just when you think you understand Cavin’s motives, the story twists again, sharper, darker, deeper.

Every instinct tells Erin he’s the enemy… yet her body craves him anyway.!
Cavin doesn’t soften himself, but he is patient. He unravels her slowly—with command, restraint and praise that sinks deep and stays there.
When he lowers his voice and tells her she’s doing exactly what he wants, it hits harder than any touch—and he knows it.
Her surrender is chosen, intoxicating, and it pleases him in ways that blur power into devotion.

The tension is feral, especially inside his club—where desire is currency and control is everything. His jealousy is primal. His possessiveness unmistakable. And instead of fear, Erin feels heat—because being wanted that completely is addictive.

🎧 Audiobook Excellence
The heat works because the writing is fearless—and the performances unleash it.
Wes Ross as Cavin McCarthy—GAME OVER🫠
Velvet-dark, commanding, and lethal with intention, his delivery turns every line into a controlled strike. You don’t just hear Cavin—you feel him.

Kai Kennicott’s portrayal of Erin is stunning—layered, emotional, and quietly powerful. She captures Erin’s strength, vulnerability, and awakening beautifully, grounding every moment with raw authenticity.

🔥 Listener Warning: Listen with headphones… unless you want to explain why you suddenly stopped breathing.

Jane delivers a jaw-dropping masterclass in dark mafia romance—layering erotic tension, betrayal, brutal loyalty, kink-charged power dynamics and emotional depth with fearless precision. The chemistry smolders, the danger never loosens its grip and every page pulses with intent.

Some love stories save you. This one claims you!
The audiobook makes sure you feel every second of it.

JUST SOOO GOOD!

As a huge fan of this author's "Dangerous Doms" Irish mafia series, (that I consumed over 4 years ago), I was anxiously awaiting the next generation! And - whew - this did not disappoint!

While you don't HAVE to know all the stories that proceed this one, I highly recommend it. Knowing the history on how the older members of the McCarthy clan handled betrayals and threats makes what is happening in this storyline even more delicious!

Cavin McCarthy has nothing to prove when it comes to loyalty to his family. Just out of prison, he is arranged to marry Erin Kavanaugh, a woman whom he bullied in high school. To say that neither of them are thrilled with this situation is a gross understatement. Erin's peculiarities made her an easy target to torment, but in doing so, she was underestimated, something Cavin finds out was a big mistake. The mystery of who is truly pulling the strings and setting Cavin up to fail is a compelling part of this read, and I was surprised at how that resolved.

I love how the chemistry swirls around this couple and their effort to fight against the sizzling connection is very entertaining. All of the expected bloodshed, violence and mayhem of this world is on full display, and it is engaging and addictive! The layers in this storyline kept me flipping pages, and I finished this quicker than I expected. Soo good!

I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next new release from this prolific and creative author.
I highly recommend visiting her catalog (once done here) for more unforgettable stories. Worth your time, IMO.

I received an ARC (thank you) and happily leave my review.

We were introduced to the McCarthy family in Unrequited when we got Seamus and Zoya’s story. Now we are getting Cavin and Erin’s story and let’s just say these two have quite a lot of history 😅

The McCarthy’s need access to trade routes in which the Kavanagh family. Meanwhile Erin’s sister Bridget is terminally ill and she needs access to a doctor that is close to the McCarthy family. Both families have something that the other wants so it’s logical that an arranged marriage is proposed between Cavin and Erin. But Erin was completely unaware that she firstly has a new fiance and secondly that her new fiance would be the man who made her life hell when they were in school together. She finds out about her impending marriage at a dinner party in which she thought was just two families coming together for a friendly discussion.

Our FMC Erin is neurodivergent and has developed various mechanisms in order to help her. She is a woman who enjoys a puzzle which she uses later in the book to uncover who is trying to destroy the McCarthy family. Cavin notices this very quickly about his wife and he fosters a warm environment by creating a space in their home for Erin where she can retreat if she needs be to knit, read or whatever she would like. This is definitely a moment where Erin’s walls come down a lot as her perception of the Cavin she knew in school is a lot different from the man he his today.

Erin didn’t realise that when she got Cavin in trouble in school it resulted in consequences at home, and this was a reason why the animosity between them started all those years go. Cavin is regretful of his actions all those years ago and he goes to the ends of the earth to apologise and ensure his wife will be happy in their marriage.

I loved seeing these two get to know each other on a deeper level and from this a romance blossomed. Cavin is oh so protective of his wife and I am absolutely here for it👏🏼

I am so excited to see where Jane takes this series next. Thank you to VPR who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭

Wicked Altar is a masterclass in emotional, dark Irish Mafia romance. As the first installment in The McCarthy Family Legacy series, Jane Henry delivers a story that is as devastating as it is beautiful.
The narrative follows Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanaugh. Both come from mafia royalty, but their history is stained with pain. Cavin, freshly out of prison, finds himself in an arranged marriage to Erin, the woman he once bullied. While the marriage is a business arrangement for the families, it is a life-saving mission for Erin. Her younger sister is gravely ill, and the only way to get her the medical care she needs is through the McCarthy family's connections.
Cavin is a complex, dominant MMC who is dangerously intuitive. He understands Erin’s limits and her sensitivities better than she does. The way he uses restraint and command to earn her surrender is intoxicating. Erin herself is a phenomenal lead. She is innocent but bold, possessing a quiet fearlessness that eventually makes her Cavin’s greatest weakness.
The suspense element is top notch. The mystery of who is pulling the strings and sabotaging Cavin kept me turning pages late into the night. The resolution was surprising and deeply satisfying. While I have always loved Seamus and Zoya, Cavin and Erin have a chemistry that is unmatched. This is Jane Henry’s best work yet. Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

love this! it hooked me in from the start an then i couldn’t put it down! we get an HEA for Cavin and Erin but it seems like there will be an overarching storyline that continues throughout the series. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Cavin and Erin grew up together, both from mafia families but Erin never really felt like she fit in. Cavin didn’t have a choice but to fit in and part of that was bullying Erin in school.. something inconsequential to him but set the tone for Erin moving forward.

Fast forward, Erin’s younger sister is extremely sick and her only chance of survival is experimental treatments from an
unbribable doctor with a two year wait list. This doctor happens to be friends with Cavin’s family and so Erin’s parents arrange a marriage between the two of them without telling Erin.

She would do anything for her sister but in this case, marriage to her enemy might not be the worst thing…turns out Cavin isn’t the same boy she went to school with anymore and he would do anything to make her happy

-arranged marriage
-bad boy x good girl
-anti hero
-band of brothers
-childhood bully
-virgin FMC
-he falls first
-irish mafia
-enemies to lovers
-boy obsessed
-neurodivergent FMC

Wicked Altar is my first book by Jane Henry and the first book in The McCarthy Family Legacy. I love a good mafia romance and mixed it with an arranged marriage and I'm 100% game.
With two very opposite MCs, this story brings you in from the start where our bad boy hero, Cavin comes to the rescue of Erin at funeral. But these two have history going back a ways and Erin wants nothing to do with someone that made her high school years a living hell. But when Erin Kavanagh is forced to marry Cavin McCarthy, she will do anything to save her sister. Even marry her enemy.

This Irish mafia romance started off with a literal bang and then introduced us to the arranged marriage to benefit two families. Both Erin and Cavin have reasons while they don't like the other, but Erin is the one that holds out longest, and for good reason. I liked that Henry was able to show us who the characters were in the present and who they were in the past to make us understand their dislike of one another. Cavin is the epitome of the bad boy. From his past and the way he treated Erin to the present with his fighting and even prison time. The man drips bad boy sex appeal, but he is attracted to the one person he never thought he would be. Erin, meanwhile has this innocence about her that may stem from her being neurodivergent. But that doesn't make her weak. She has this unexpected strength when it comes to what she loves and believes in, especially her sister and soon Cavin. They may start off by hating the idea of the marriage, but it quickly evolves into more and these two grow quite protective of one another from the moment they start to realize that they have real feelings for each other.

With the plot surrounding an arranged marriage to grow power for the McCarthys, I was consumed with the growth between Erin and Cavin's relationship and how soon they fell for one another. I liked seeing Cavin be soft for Erin and giving her a safe space when she was overwhelmed. That in turned allowed her a strength she wasn't ever allowed to have under her parents' roof. Those moments stood out the most and made me fall for these two. But then I had to wonder if there was more to the whole plot than the arranged marriage, because that aspect cleared up pretty quickly. With the added fighting scenes and the matter of "paying the tribute", you could tell there was more at play to this mafia story. But that aspect seemed more of an afterthought. I wanted that conflict to be more concise and flow with the rest of the story more cohesively. I wish there was more backstory concerning that aspect, as well as the McCarthy family. But overall, it was still an enjoyable read with two MCs that are easy to fall for. Wicked Altar is a solid start to a new mafia series that left parts open-ended to potential stories to come.

If you like:
Mafia Romance
Arranged Marriage
Opposites Attract
Band of Brothers
Neurodivergent FMC
Underground fighter MMC that is a cinnamon role for his woman, then this story is worth checking out.

YOU’RE NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

The next generation of the McCarthy family saga continues. The story will focus mainly on Cavin McCarthy and a union with Erin Kavanagh. These two aren’t strangers by any means, both attending school at St. Albert’s—and that is a huge part of the problem. Cavin maintained his bad boy persona and referred to her as Perfect little Erin. But they aren’t kids anymore, far from it. Erin is twenty-six and has never dated, and Cavin is a couple of years older and in the mafia.

What a shock for Erin to learn that the invitation to dinner with her parents at the McCarthy home isn’t just a social dinner but an arrangement. Erin enters the situation meekly, and it is up to Cavin to break the truth to her—how could her family do this to her? It is decided that the wedding will take place in two months and that the union will aid the McCarthy and Kavanagh families, but what about Erin's wants? Using her sister, Bridget, as leverage is how her mother deals with her.

Cavin: You really don’t care what people think of you, do you?
Erin: I care. I just can’t change how my brain works, so I stopped trying. People think I’m rude, or cold, or strange. Maybe I am. But I’m also right most of the time, and I’d rather be right than be liked. You’re not what I expected.
Cavin: Aye? How so?
Erin: You’re not…You’re not performing. Most people perform. They say what they think you want to hear, or what makes them look good. You don’t do that.
Cavin: Neither do you.
Erin: No. I don’t. Sort of a pair, then? Maybe that’s why this—might work.
Cavin: This being?
Erin: The marriage. The arrangement. Whatever this is. I should go. I have work. I’m putting this behind us. I’m—not the girl I was in school anymore, and--you’re not who you were either.

The story is shrouded in secrets, mystery, suspense, life and death danger, good, bad, and evil. Not everyone is as they seem, and even arranged marriages can work. The chemistry is there for Erin and Cavin, once they each get past the fact that they aren’t the kids from school, both have grown up, matured, and have much to offer.

I went into this expecting dark chaos, high drama, and emotional suffering… and instead got something oddly soft, communicative, and quietly addictive. That’s probably on me, I read a lot of dark romance, so my darkness scale may be a little skewed, but either way, this surprised me.

This is an arranged marriage / former bully romance that does something surprisingly rare: the characters actually talk. Erin and Cavin confront their past head-on, articulate the damage that was done, and (crucially) Cavin takes real accountability without excuses. Erin accepts his apology when it feels earned and chooses to move forward instead of marinating in endless angst. It felt emotionally mature in a way I wasn’t expecting, and that choice paid off for me.

What really worked was the relationship itself. Their connection develops quickly and very easily (borderline insta-love) but the communication, mutual care, and constant emotional check-ins made it feel safe and intentional rather than lazy. Friends and family actively root for them, which removed a lot of manufactured conflict and made the romance feel grounded and supported. Even the intimacy leaned into consent, reassurance, and caretaking energy, which absolutely worked for the dynamic.

The plot has just enough action, tension, intrigue, and forward momentum to keep things moving. I kept turning pages not because everything was explosive, but because it was steady and emotionally satisfying. That said, if you’re here strictly for chaos, moral collapse, or relentless darkness, this may feel too gentle. Cavin’s refusal to fully listen to Erin at certain points was frustrating, and some developments resolved a little too neatly for my taste.

Still, this book was bingeable in the best way. It’s not what I expected, yet it completely worked for my mood. Soft obsession, emotional safety, knitted hats worn during fights - I was done for.

Final verdict:
Less dark than anticipated, more emotionally functional than expected, and somehow still addictive.

This enemies to lovers dark mafia romance started out with a bang and did not let up with the tension filled dynamics between Cavin and Erin fueled by a shared childhood past where he was her bully, and she still hates him for it. Jane Henry excels at writing unique stories where morally grey men who put family above all else loose their hearts and become obsessed by strong FMCs. I absolutely love it—every time!

Erin’s intelligence and devotion to her younger sister made me instantly feel compassion for her. I love how she says what’s on her mind and pushes back even when her life is being controlled by the men in the ‘family’. Her ability to rile Cavin and push against his dominance makes her a stabby FMC who never needs to hold a knife.

Cavin’s character grows as he begins to understand Erin and the traumatic impacts bullying and her dysfunctional family have had on her. As Cavin deals with his own neurodivergent mind, these two have to work to find love through all the hate. I was emotionally invested in them even when the twists the dangerous mafia world delivered and their own trauma had me anxious to turn the page. Erin and Cavin’s story hit me in the feels, and I love this couple who would rather be alone then be over-peopled—a trait I can relate to at times!😂

If you love mafia reads with obsessed, hot Irish MMCs who fall first and hard, steamy spice and an action filled plot, then you need to meet the McCarthy men and their fierce and feisty wives. Available on KU today!!

Jane Henry never fails to deliver a fantastic mafia romance story.

Wicked Altar is the start of her newest mafia romance series, the McCarthy Family Legacy. We got a glimpse of them from her previous series (Bravata Kings), and we dive right into Cavin and Erin's

The blurb gives you all need to go into this story.

Cavin and Erin group up going to the same school together, but they were not friendly. Erin is neurodivergent. Cavin wasn't exactly kind to her either.

As the blurb states their respected families have a mutual benefit of their arranged marriage. Neither want it but neither can deny the pull they feel towards one another, as much as they fight it.

Jane does a fabulous job with the character development in this book. I loved seeing Cavin grow as the story progressed. He found himself appreciating Erin in new ways and that allowed him to grow in other ways. Neurodivergence isn't an obvious disorder in people and I love how Jane portrayed Erin perfectly and her mannerisms. Erin may have seemed naive in school, but now as an adult, she is fierce and Cavin quickly realizes that he has match his match.

The plot of this story was very engaging and the twists at every corner had me turning the pages. I loved that Jane flawlessly blended the romance aspects of this story with the overall plot and made it all come together perfectly.

A great start to her newest series!

Wicked Altar by Jane Henry is the first book in The McCarthy Family Legacy series and features an arranged marriage between Erin and Cavin set in a dark mafia world. With tropes like bad boy x good girl, obsessed MMC, neurodivergent heroine, past school bullying, and dark secrets, this book sounded like it was made for me.

And honestly? It started off pretty strong. The premise was intriguing, the early character dynamics worked, and for a while I was genuinely invested. Erin was interesting at first, and the story had the potential to go somewhere dark and emotionally intense.

Sadly, it didn’t last.

After the initial setup, the pacing completely fell apart. The story started to feel extremely rushed, with one action scene after another and very little room for development. Multiple scenes felt unfinished, as if they were cut short just to move the plot along faster. From a certain point on, I felt like I was speed-reading through important moments that should have carried much more weight.

The ending was especially disappointing. The big reveal came and went so quickly that it barely had any impact, which is a shame because it should have been a defining moment for the story. Despite loving the tropes in theory, I eventually reached the point where I was just hoping the book would end.

I was also really annoyed by several side characters. Erin’s parents were obviously awful, but the behavior of Declan’s family toward the end felt unnecessary and poorly handled, adding frustration rather than depth or tension.

Overall, Wicked Altar had a lot of promise and all the right tropes, but the rushed execution and pacing issues ruined the experience for me. This could have been a great dark mafia romance, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to its potential.

Wickedly Good

“I see the way people part for him, .. I like being with the scary one..”

BEST DUE as always on Jane Henry!! I can not get enough.. I love it sooo much and would listen to them forever.
Stories are TOP NOTCH.
The McCarthy Family is Dynamic, and never disssapoints.
This was a cherry on an already wonderfully delisious cake.

Erin and Cavin has a history.. not the nice kind.. its now in both their faces and they can not go around it.. they need to deal with it..
Bridgette brings in a whole different set of emotions to unpack.
The drama and intruge is next level and kept me on my toes the whole way trough.
When we learn what really happened… Hold on to your hats..

“I promise to see you and be your person” can I just swoon here for a moment???

Its a gripping Mafia Read and the love and chemistry in sizzelinnnng..

Enemies to Lovers done very right.
Arrange Marriage at its best.

⭐️I received an ALC for my review! My opinions are my own!⭐️

First off, this is the first mafia romance that I fell head over heels in love with! It had EVERYTHING! Enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity/marriage, touch her/him and die, slow burn, and if it were supernatural, i would swear they were fated mates! The chemistry between our fmc and mmc was there from the beginning, but they fought it tooth and nail. I loved the story and everything about this set my soul on fire. I felt every single emotion poured into this and there were A LOT. The writing was impeccable, the story flowed freely and the character development was top notch. The relationship bloomed organically and even though it was through force, it didn't feel forced. Nothing was rushed and it left ypu wanting for nothing, but more of these amazing characters. I truly hope there will be another installment in this because it breaks my heart to think I wont get to experience these characters again!
I loved every single second of this book!

Plot: 4/5 - Spice: 3/5 ————> Cavin and Erin have known each other since childhood. They went to the same school. Cavin was a grade A bully, and Erin was a tattletale, always ratting Cavin out. They never got along. They both hated each other.

Hating each other makes for a good arraigned marriage. His family needs something, and her family needs a miracle. Together they’re forced to marry. Forced to spend time together, attraction aside, they go from cold to hot.

You have to wait until you’re about halfway through the book before Cavin and Erin finally come together. But when they do, it’s perfect. They’re both supportive of each other. No more lies. They break down their barriers. They both can be themselves. They work together to solve Cavins troubles, and Cavin comes through with the miracle doctor for Erin.

A wonderful standalone WITH NO SURPRISE PREGNANCY! (I swear all mafia romances wind up with one, so I was ecstatic that this one didn’t) A solid HEA. This was a fun, dark, irish mafia romance.

I absolutely adored this book! The way in which Cavin redeemed himself from his past had my heart in a vice grip. You can’t help but appreciate Erin’s stubborn and strong personality. These two were perfect for each other.

Cavin’s commitment to showing Erin that he’s apologetic for everything was *chef’s kiss*. This man stops at nothing to protect Erin from his world and worshipped the hell out of her. He’s controlling, powerful, and full of love for his woman. Even when everything around him was falling apart, they both leaned on each other for comfort and safety.

Erin is such a strong and fiesty character. She fights her feelings and makes Cavin grovel as he should. I loved how she asserted her power when it came to her man and never let him control her. She takes in the bloodshed, the betrayal, and the overwhelming passion between her and Cavin with strength. I loved watching their relationship grow to the point where they couldn’t live without each other.

This story pulled me in from the start with its intense enemies-to-lovers dynamic and layered characters. Erin and Cavin's arranged marriage, born from mafia family duty, is anything but romantic, yet their chemistry is undeniable. I loved watching Erin, a neurodivergent heroine, navigate trauma and anxiety with strength and intelligence. Cavin, once her childhood bully, transforms into a fiercely protective partner who falls first and hard. Their slow-burn connection felt raw and earned, filled with tension, emotional growth, and unexpected tenderness. The story balances high-stakes danger, family loyalty, and unresolved wounds with a touch of spice and suspense. I appreciated that love didn't magically fix everything; they had to work for it. If you're into dark mafia romance with heart and grit, this one's worth it.

Irish mafia arranged marriage tropes will do it for me everytime. This was quick, faced paced easy to read. Great for beginners to the mafia dark romance genre.

Cavin is hot af as the second in command for the Irish family run by his older brother. He is forced into an arranged marriage as a business move to control more trade routes.

This was so good! I’m incredibly grateful I had the opportunity to get the audiobook version because the narration took the story to a whole new level! The Irish accents were so clear, easy to understand, and absolutely divine.

The overall plot and story was perfection and pulls you right in. There is so much tension, plot build up with suspense, and of a course some little plot twists along the way. I’m such a fan of Jane’s work and this book was an incredible read at to kick off a new series! I’m hooked!

Wicked Altar by Jane Henry is the first book in her new series The McCarthy Family Legacy. We are back in Ballyhock to meet the next generation of the McCarthy clan following on from the Dangerous Doms series. Cavin is Keenan’s son and has recently been released from prison. This is a dark Irish Mafia arranged marriage romance between Cavin and Erin Kavanagh. A hate to love tale because this is a marriage neither of them want. Although both brought up in the Irish Mafia, they are total opposites; he is ruthless and violent and she is quiet and intelligent. This is an action packed, suspenseful story full of betrayal, lies and deception, suspicious activities, violence and promises broken but also forgiveness, understanding, loyalty and love.

The story starts with the whole McCarthy family attending Malachy’s funeral. Cavin is distracted because Malachy has burdened him with a secret he must keep. Then he spots Erin in the distance and is reminded of their time in school when she was always getting him in trouble. After an attack on the family, they need to strengthen their clan and it is decided that Cavin must marry Erin. He despises her and she hates him but he has sworn to do anything for the family, however, what surprises him is that he can’t stop thinking about her since the funeral.

Erin experienced some horrific events at school which left her feeling broken and she blames Cavin for making her life hell. The trauma still affects her, leaving her anxious and overwhelmed. With coping mechanisms in place she lives at home managing the books for her parents various businesses. She loves numbers, puzzles and finding patterns. Her sister Bridget is seriously ill but the family have kept it a secret. When they find out the McCarthys are friends with a doctor who could save Bridget, her parents agree to forfeit trade routes by marrying off Erin. She has no idea what arrangements have been agreed until Cavin informs her when they all meet up.

Cavin now has to deal with a furious Erin who refuses to forgive him for his antics as a boy. Can he show her that he’s changed and is now a man who will protect and fight for her. Bridget is getting worse so Erin will do anything to save her, even if it means marrying Cavin. She’s cross at her body’s reaction to him and starts to like his caring and commanding side. Neither of them can believe something is building between them and both feel the connection. Could it work between them ? As they fall for each other, we learn more about them and their sad history. He doesn’t want her to hate him anymore so reveals some of what he has been through.

While their romance builds, they have many problems to overcome. They are both are keeping secrets from the other. He needs violence so is a bare-knuckle fighter to let his anger out. He also loves to dominate in his exclusive club so is hoping Erin could be his submissive. She’s confused over why she enjoys watching him in the ring and is curious about his dominant side. She also knows she must get Cavin to persuade Dr Rosenberg to see Bridget?

Can they work together and find out who is behind all the terrible events happening. Is someone leaking information about the clan and betraying them. Who is he paying the tribute to. Can Erin solve the puzzles but what if he doesn’t like what she finds? Can they save each other when things quickly escalate and the dangers and threats get worse?

The McCarthy’s are a large family so there are many secondary characters. I really liked Declan as he was so funny at times and Bronwyn was so supportive to Erin. Cavin’s fighting scenes were great and he was so understanding of her anxiety. He was thoughtful towards her and quickly became possessive, loved how he stood up for her against her mother. Erin made me laugh with some of her antics, like blocking his number and what she did with his winnings.

I did feel the story was a little disjointed at times, with a lot of things going on and enemies named but no further information to put it all in context. However, I really enjoyed the twist at their engagement party - so pleased she took the risk. We get a great ending which is explosive and
full of surprises. This couple were so good for each other and I liked the way they make sure everyone knows their marriage is real and full of love. Going to be interesting who is next.

This classic enemies-to-lovers tale is darkly decadent and deserves top marks. As with many of her previous books, Ms. Henry is well-versed in the Mafia lifestyle and uncompromising in her depiction of a complicated, morally gray relationship. One of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much was the inclusion of many characters from the Dangerous Doms series. The storyline is reminiscent of previous series in which the McCarthy men enter strategic marriages to benefit the family. Told through dual POVs and flashbacks, the narrative offers multiple perspectives that deepen the reader’s understanding of the characters and their motivations.

Erin and Cavin’s relationship was a baptism of fire. They are like two fighters circling each other in the ring. While their journey may be disturbing at first, it’s ultimately intriguing, and I loved watching their relationship evolve from enemies who could barely stand to be in the same room to partners bound by trust, loyalty, and having each other’s backs.

Cavin is a kick-ass anti-hero who radiates raw power, violence, and danger, yet he’s also protective, dominant, and surprisingly intuitive, especially of Erin’s idiosyncrasies. Fresh out of jail, he finds himself engaged to Erin as part of a strategic plan that benefits them both. The problem? Erin despises Cavin for the years of torment he inflicted on her at school. At times, Cavin felt like he had a split personality, one capable of destroying a man with ruthless precision, and another that would protect Erin at any cost. I loved how he acknowledged Erin’s intelligence and skills. There was so much more to him than first impressions suggested, and his hidden depth made his redemption arc incredibly satisfying. Best of all, he redeems himself without losing the dark edge I’ve come to expect from Ms. Henry’s heroes.

My heart ached for Erin. Her family threw her into the deep end, sacrificing her future for her sister. Despite her resentment toward Cavin, Erin’s relationship with her sister was deeply poignant; she would go to the ends of the earth to help her regain her strength, even if it meant marrying the one person who made her school years hell. She was drawn to Cavin despite her resentment. He was beautiful in the most dangerous way. Desire mingled with fear; yes, she feared him, but he also made her knees weak. Excitement, fear, and arousal twisted together in a confusing, intoxicating dichotomy. I loved how Erin pushed Cavin’s buttons and how she grew a backbone. Standing up to the McCarthy family took real courage. She was no shrinking violet, and her quirky traits made her all the more endearing.

This book is fraught with tension, brimming with complex character development, and packed with complicated yet fiery chemistry. I love stories that challenge you to piece the puzzle together, and this one had me guessing right up until the final page.

This book!! It completely consumed me.
From the very first chapter, this story sinks its claws in and refuses to let go, delivering a dark, emotionally intense Irish mafia romance that is both brutal and intimate. Jane Henry weaves violence, loyalty, trauma, and desire together so seamlessly that I was fully immersed from start to finish.
I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to read this ARC because experiencing this story early was an absolute privilege.

Cavin McCarthy is a morally black, dangerously compelling hero. He’s ruthless, controlled, and shaped by a life of violence and obligation, yet the way he protects Erin is obsessive, reverent, and deeply unsettling in the best way. His POV chapters are raw and gripping, filled with guilt, devotion, and loyalty to a family that constantly demands sacrifice. Cavin is not soft and he is not safe—but the intensity of his love makes him unforgettable.

Erin Kavanagh broke my heart. Her anxiety, her coping mechanisms, and the lasting scars from bullying felt painfully real. Being forced into an arranged marriage with the man who once tormented her—while trying to save her sister’s life—puts her in an impossible position, and every decision she makes carries emotional weight. Erin is gentle but strong, vulnerable yet resilient, and her internal conflict made her an incredibly compelling heroine.

The romance is dark, layered, and slow-burning, fueled by unresolved history, resentment, and undeniable attraction. This is not a soft enemies-to-lovers story—it’s messy, intense, and emotionally charged, where every interaction feels dangerous and loaded with meaning. The chemistry between Cavin and Erin simmers beneath pain and power dynamics, making their connection impossible to ignore.

The Irish mafia setting adds high stakes and grit, with bombings, family politics, blood debts, and power plays constantly looming in the background. Erin’s sister’s illness adds an emotional ticking clock that amplifies the desperation and sacrifice at the heart of this story. The theme of devotion—what people are willing to give up for family and love—runs through every page.

Jane Henry’s writing is sharp, immersive, and emotionally heavy. The dual POV works perfectly, drawing you deep into both Cavin’s darkness and Erin’s vulnerability. The pacing kept me hooked, and the emotional moments hit hard without ever feeling rushed.

Overall, Wicked Altar is dark romance done right—raw, obsessive, painful, and unforgettable. I’m so thankful to have received this ARC, and I cannot wait for everyone else to experience this story when it releases on January 30th, 2026. If you love dark mafia romance with morally gray heroes, forced proximity, and emotionally devastating love stories, this one is a must-read!

This is the first book in a new series by Jane Henry all about the Irish Mafia and the McCarthy family..
I honestly did enjoy the story but it did take me a while to get into it at first.
I am not completely sure why,..I just couldn't put my finger on it,but as the story progressed it got better and I became hooked.
Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanaugh hate eachother they went to school together and Cavin along with his friends bullied her.
Erin was a bit of nerd, very smart, followed the rules and was seen as little miss perfect so she was a target for Cavin and his friends.
Now all grown up they still don't like one another, but unfortunately for them they are dragged into an arranged marriage.
Cavin was in prison for a few months, fights in an underground boxing ring and is a head of his family's affairs..NO-ONE messes with him or the McCarthy's.
Erin on the other hand is a bit quirky and has anxiety,it doesn't mention if she is autistic but it certainly sounds like she is.
She works for her family doing the books she is great with numbers, but her parents prefer her sister..But her sister is sick and needs specialist treatment and the McCarthy's may be able to help them with that.
Erin and her sister have a good relationship which I am glad about, sometimes in stories like this were one sister is seen as the favourite they have the sisters as enemies. But it was nice that Erin and her sister loved eachother very much so it was heartbreaking that she was very ill.
I actually thought it was kind of sweet the way Cavin and Erin slowly but surely get to know one another..Cavin is super possessive which Erin starts to like because for once someone thinks she is important.Sparks definately fly with them and intimately they are as hot as hades..
I like the way Cavin let Erin in and trusted her with family buisness he regards them as a team and I loved that.
There is alot going on in this book between the romance there is the sick sister,Mafia stuff, someone trying to kill Cavin,The club shenanighans, the fighting ring and family drama....But it all fits together perfectly and so do Cavin and Erin.
The narrators for this book are really Amazing Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross done an excellent performance as Erin and Cavin..I thought that their Irish Accents were done very well and I enjoyed listening to them.
I think that this will be a very action packed, steamy series from Jane Henry and I will be looking forward to more books to listen to from Jane Henry.
4 1/2 stars.

Thanks to Valentine PR and Jane Henry for the free ARC. All opinions are my own in the following ARC Review.

Genres: Mafia Romance, Erotic Romance, Romantic Suspense
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Arranged Marriage, Former Bully, Neurodivergent FMC, Possessive MMC, Bad Boy/Good Girl, He Falls First, Virgin Heroine, Hurt/Comfort, BDSM
MC: Erin (FMC), Cavin (MMC)
Setting: Ballyhock, Ireland

Epilogue: Yes

Synopsis: Erin and Cavin come from organized crime families and have known each other since childhood, when Cavin bullied Erin and she retaliated by tattling on him. Years later, their families arrange a marriage to secure an alliance and meet mutual needs. Neither is happy with the arrangement, and Erin struggles with the idea of marrying her former tormentor, but her loyalty to her family leaves her no choice. Determined to make the best of the situation, Cavin begins to see Erin in a new light. As they spend time together, they discover shared struggles and unexpected similarities, forming a bond built on trust and vulnerability. Choosing to marry quickly, they explore their relationship on their own terms. Cavin is blackmailed and later violently attacked, when Erin goes to uncover the truth while he recovers. A shocking family betrayal forces the McCarthys to rethink their alliances, and as Cavin heals, he’s ready to face the future with Erin at his side.

Thoughts: Jane Henry wrote another amazing story! I loved being back at Ballyhock with the McCarthy clan. The transition from dislike to deep love between Cavin and Erin was really wonderful. They both had valid reasons for initially disliking one another, but their eventual realization of how much they shared quickly transformed their feelings. I appreciated how both Cavin and Erin opened up, shared their vulnerabilities, and worked through them together. It definitely made them stronger as a couple. They were able to lean on each other in ways neither had been able to before, and you can feel the weight they each carried lift once they came together. I especially enjoyed all the scenes where it was just Cavin and Erin alone as a couple. Their happiness and love truly shine through in those moments. They are so tender and playful with one another that they’ve quickly become one of my new favorite couples. I don’t know whose story is up next, but I’m so excited to return to the McCarthy world.

Jane Henry’s Wicked Altar is a devastatingly beautiful dark mafia romance that grips you from the very first page and refuses to let go. Building on the world established in Unrequited, this story follows Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanagh, two individuals bound by a history of childhood animosity and an arranged marriage forged in blood.

To save her terminally ill sister, Erin is forced into a union with the man who made her school years a living hell. However, as she is dragged into the lethal McCarthy world, she discovers that the "monster" from her past has evolved into a man who would burn the world down to keep her safe.

The character work here is exceptional. Cavin is the ultimate dark book boyfriend—ruthless and strategic, yet dangerously intuitive. He reads Erin with unnerving accuracy, recognizing her neurodivergence and fostering an environment where she can thrive. By creating a sanctuary for her within their home, he slowly dismantles the walls she built against him.

Erin is an equally phenomenal lead. She is intelligent, quiet, and fearless—fire wrapped in scars. Her love for puzzles becomes a pivotal asset as she works to uncover those threatening the McCarthy legacy. The shift from mutual animosity to a deep, protective devotion is handled with a precision that makes their chemistry feel both feral and earned.

The audiobook experience is nothing short of mind-blowing. The author’s precise writing is matched by a powerhouse performance from Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross. Kai portrays Erin with stunning layers, grounding her vulnerability and awakening with raw authenticity.

Opposite her, Wen Ross is "game over" as Cavin McCarthy. His velvet-dark, commanding delivery turns every command and pause into a controlled strike; you don’t just hear Cavin, you feel his primal possessiveness. Together, they don’t just narrate the story—they unleash it.

Wicked Altar delivers a satisfying emotional payoff and a hard-won HEA, while masterfully setting the stage for an overarching series mystery. It is a story where surrender is intoxicating and power blurs into total devotion.

This is a must-listen for fans of "he falls first," "touch her and you die," and reformed-bully tropes. Jane Henry has exceeded all expectations, and I am already buzzing with anticipation for the next McCarthy brother!
