Bonded Ruination: Book Two of the Twisted Fates Duology

Rate this book
He was the monster fate chose for her, and the only one ruthless enough to keep her alive.

For years, Cadence survived by hiding in the shadows, shrinking herself to remain unnoticed.

Unremarkable. Overlooked. Safe.

But fate was a tyrant she could never escape.

Now, she’s done running. She’s ready to claim her power, surrendering to her need for retribution, her hunger for blood.

Ryker’s blood.

But with enemies closing in from all sides, Cadence and Ryker must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice — how much they are willing to destroy — to survive.

Cadence

My Captor. My Conqueror. My Mate.

I vowed to be his ruination, and he claimed me anyway.

He thought he could cage me, that he owned me.

While he continued to underestimate me, I moved in silence, setting the board for his fall.

And when the end comes, he’ll learn one truth above all others: I never break my vows.

Ryker

My Wife. My Temptress. My Mate.

I’ve done terrible things to keep Cadence at my side.

And yet, I would do worse, far worse, to protect what is mine.

She believes I control her, blind to the devastation she commands.
But Cadence could crumble the Unseelie Kingdom.

Every thought, every decision, every breath… she’s the reason for it all. She possesses the power to utterly ruin me, making her the most dangerous creature in the realm… because I would destroy everything before I’d let her fall.

As their enemies make their final play, Cadence and Ryker’s bond will be pushed to its breaking point. When loyalty wages war against survival, and desire collides with betrayal, it will become both their greatest weapon… and their most devastating weakness.

I absolutely loved book two! The beginning had me a little frustrated but as I got further on in the book, I became obsessed and couldn't read quick enough. There were some funny moments in this with the boys and with Cadence.

I hated Ryker and yet loved him. I hight recommend reading this dueolgy if you love Fae, magick, banter, action, Kingdom sword fights and forceful, passionate spice!

I really had a good time reading this book!

If you like
Fated mates
Dark romantasy
Magic
Fae
Morally grey Mmc
Passionate spice
Strong Fmc
Then you will love this duology!

Cadence the Fmc is such a beautiful soul and such a character she makes you look up to her honestly! She is so raw and emotional in everything she does and everything she makes you feel.

Ryker where do I start?! He is such a misjudged character, heaps of people hate some of the stuff he does Honestly when you love someone as much as he loves cadence then you can see everything he does is to protect her and I will never fault that in a Mmc

These two have so much chemistry it is so thrilling even when cadence is fighting it. I loved this duology with my whole heart.. the side characters also all has spaces in my heart as they really just bring this book to a whole. Without them I would pull my hair out 😂
Throughout the whole book I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering when I was going to cry or when I was going to try and punch someone 😂
K.J you have honestly outdone yourself and I cannot wait to read more of your writing as I honestly love it so much

I received this book as an ARC from K.J Johnson and the naughty nook however everything I have written is voluntary and my complete honest opinion!!

Bonded Ruination is a breathtaking, emotionally charged conclusion to the Twisted Fates Duology.

My internal conflict with Ryker absolutely continues in this book, and I mean that in the best way. I am still holding two truths at once. Some of his actions feel impossible to forgive, yet his devotion and protection of Cadence are fierce and unwavering. That tension, that constant pull between anger and understanding, is written so intentionally. It is rare to feel both drawn to and deeply frustrated by a main character in equal measure, but this story makes space for that complexity.

Cadence, though. I adored her in this instalment. Her growth does not just continue, it solidifies. There is a clarity to her now. Even in moments of emotional rawness, she feels anchored in herself. Her internal struggle, especially in relation to Ryker, feels layered and real. She is more determined, more assured, and even when she feels vulnerable, her strength is unmistakable.

Riordan remains my favourite. He brings emotional depth in a way that made me laugh, ache, and feel completely invested. For a secondary character, his presence carries real weight. He never feels overshadowed.

I also loved seeing more of Callum. Watching him unravel in subtle ways, while stepping further into his power, added another compelling layer to the story.

And that ending… I was not prepared. I was holding my breath, teary, conflicted all over again. For the first time, I found myself siding with Ryker in a way I had not before, and still feeling uncertain. The emotional tension does not let up.

The epilogue deserves its own mention. It is one of the strongest I have read. It left me sitting with multiple emotions at once, in the best possible way.

This book delivers on every level. The overarching storyline, the emotional push and pull of the romance, the spice that is spicy, the uncertainty about where everything will land. It is intense, layered, and deeply immersive. I savoured every single page.

This duology is pure brilliance.

I received this book as an ARC from the author and The Naughty Nook; however, this review reflects my honest thoughts and feelings shared voluntarily.

I went into Bonded Ruination by K.J. Johnson** without having read book one, and surprisingly, I never felt lost. The story provided enough context for me to follow along easily, and I was able to connect the dots without feeling like I’d missed something essential.

This book gave me very mixed emotions—in the best way. It made me angry, heartbroken, hopeful, and satisfied all at once. Cadence was a standout for me. She is incredibly strong, not just in power but in spirit. Despite everything she endures, she remains headstrong, empathetic, and fiercely supportive of the people she loves. Watching her step out of the shadows and embrace her strength was one of my favorite parts of the story.

Ryker is intense, ruthless, and undeniably compelling. His fierceness shows up in everything—his love, his loyalty, and even his anger. The dynamic between him and Cadence is passionate and volatile, blending hatred, devotion, and undeniable chemistry in a way that keeps you hooked.

The sibling dynamic added an unexpected layer that I really enjoyed, and the constant plot twists kept the pacing tight and engaging. There was always something happening, always a new revelation around the corner.

The ending felt earned and beautifully delivered, wrapping up the emotional chaos in a satisfying way. Overall, this was a dramatic, high-stakes fantasy romance filled with intensity, strong character growth, and a love story that refuses to be simple.

Bonded Ruination by K.J. Johnson
Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice - 🌶️🌶️🌶️

A wildly spicy yet zesty chaotic blend!

I wholeheartedly recommend the Twisted Fates Duology - it's an enchanting read that introduced me to a new genre I wouldn't have explored otherwise.

Honestly I was utterly captivated with how Author K.J. Johnson has masterfully woven this duology into a compelling escape that's simply impossible to put down.

Cadence and Ryker are fated mates. The chemistry between the duo is intensely satisfying, yet morally toxic at times. The trials and tribulations they face together build upon their dynamics.

⚠️This book contains numerous themes and scenes that some readers may find distressing or disturbing. Check Trigger Warnings before reading⚠️

Favourites -

Cadence - Lethal and vicious. Those two words described my mate perfectly.

Ryker - “I am the man who will hunt down your enemies and lay their bloodied heads at your feet so you, and anyone who ever thought to plot against you, will know exactly what fate awaits them should they try.”

Cadence - He was the embodiment of wrath, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him as my skin heated and my chest heaved with each inhale.

Ryker - “Don’t think your silken words will spare you from the punishment you earned with that little stunt, Temptress.”

I would like to thank K.J. Johnson and The Naughty Nook for this fantastic opportunity. I received this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.🖤🖤

This book wrecked me in all the right ways—filled me with a flood of emotions that hit like a tidal wave. I was furious, heartbroken, hope-filled, and utterly fulfilled all at once. Cadence? She’s a bloody legend. No matter what hell she faces, she stands tall—headstrong, full of empathy, and fiercely standing by those she loves.

Watching her peel back the shadows and claim her power made my heart swell. It was a moment of pure, unspoken defiance that left me breathless.

And Ryker—oh we can't forget about him, he’s a force of nature. Intense, relentless, and utterly magnetic. His fierceness seeps into everything he does—his love, his loyalty, and even his rage. The way he and Cadence clash and collide? It’s explosive. Their passion is wild and unpredictable, stitched together with threads of hatred, devotion, and a chemistry so raw it leaves you hanging on every word. It’s chaotic, it’s beautiful, and you just can’t look away.

Once you get to the it feels like a hard-won victory—earned and delivered with heart-stopping grace, wrapping up the chaos of their story in a way that felt honest and deeply satisfying. All in all, this is a wild, high-stakes fantasy romance—a rollercoaster of intensity, fierce character growth, and a love that refuses to be simple or easy. It’s a story that digs deep and leaves a mark on your soul.

First things first, I haven’t read the first part of this book, yet I still read it, and that was okay. I was able to make connections easily and never felt like I missed out on anything.
Secondly, the book gave me mixed feelings. It made me angry, sad, and happy all at once, yet it had a beautiful ending. Cadence was a very strong woman throughout the story, and I truly loved her courage. She went through so many challenges, yet she stayed headstrong, extremely supportive, empathetic toward her loved ones, and very understanding. I loved her energy throughout. Ryker, although fierce in nature, made sure to show that fierceness in everything, whether it was love, loyalty, or anger. He was indeed a very attractive character. Their love story was on another level, passionate, intense, and a perfect mix of hatred and love, which was amazing to read.
The sibling duo was remarkable too, unexpected, in fact! The book had plot twists coming one after another, which kept me on my toes. I was always looking forward to what would happen next. The book concluded with a beautiful ending, a much awaited ending. The writing style was beautiful and well delivered too.
Overall, it was amazing — 5/5

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Dark, Addictive Read You Won’t Want to Put Down

Bonded Ruination by K.J. Johnson is one of those books that completely pulls you in and refuses to let go. From the very first chapters, the story grips you with intense emotion, complex relationships, and a world that feels vivid and immersive.

The character dynamics are one of the biggest strengths of this book. The tension, chemistry, and layered personalities keep the story moving at a perfect pace, and just when you think you know what’s coming next, the plot takes another turn. K.J. Johnson does a fantastic job of building intrigue while still giving readers those powerful emotional moments that make the characters feel real and compelling.

The darker themes and high-stakes relationships add depth to the story, making it far more than just a typical romance or fantasy. It’s raw, dramatic, and incredibly engaging. If you enjoy books with strong character connections, emotional intensity, and a storyline that keeps you hooked late into the night, this one is absolutely worth the read.

Highly recommend for readers who love dark romance with depth, tension, and unforgettable characters. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from K.J. Johnson.

This book was fantastic. It had everything I could love about a dark romance. I really enjoyed Bonded Chaos, but I thought this one was better. It was darker, more well rounded and the FMC, Cadence, just got better.
It begins as soon as Chaos finished with Cadence back with her 'mate' (Ryker) who she hates with her father stalking her in the palace to take down said 'mate.' I love the idea of a 'fated mate' who fights the bond. She doesn't accept anything, she wants him to earn it, to show her. However is an arrogant, possessive prince, trying to protect his mate. I love it. She is one of my favourite FMCs I have read about in awhile.
We get to meet her brother Callum who comes to save her. The most interesting part i his connection with Riordan (Rykers brother) and what develops there. Riordan is my favourite character hands down. It helps to have his humour alongside the darkness that is Ryker.
The book gets darker as it goes through, with so many twists and turns its hard to know what is coming. But it is so worth the read. Highly recommend.

I was fortunate to receive Bonded Ruination as an eARC from the Naughty Nook.

WOW! I am so glad I was able to receive this early because I could not wait to read the second one after finishing Bonded Chaos. The second book was even better than the first if that is possible! This book is 4.5/5 stars for me. (.5 star gone because pregnancy trope is an ick for me but that's personal). Cadence becomes even stronger, chaos really begins, and a new character enters the chat.

So much character development happens in this sequel that you craved during the first. The anger, the yearning, the spice! The pace became faster and I could not stop reading, I needed to find out what was coming next.

Riordon remains my favorite character and I NEED a novella about him and you know who (no spoilers here!!!). The ending was well done and left me feeling content.

I really want these to be traditionally published so I can get my hands on a physical copy of the duology. So read and share!!

Gah the emotions I felt reading this conclusion….

A MMC has never made me MORE angry than Ryker like I wanted to grab him and shake some sense into him!!! I know Cadence felt the same - I was yelling out loud at parts!

This Duology was amazing at highlighting the complexities of characters. Ryker is a MORALLY BLACK MMC and shows it time and time again. I appreciated that we didnt see a magically change in him and he was adamatwly himself, cruelty and all. I was happy to get some understanding of his ways though.

This book was fast paced. So much happened but not too much that I couldn’t keep up. I enjoyed getting more of our side characters as well - especially Riordan the lil flirt.

This was an epic conclusion to this Duology and yet another banger by K.J. Johnson. The ending had me in a choke hold and I was so stressed, but I loved it and I enjoyed reading Cadence and Ryker’s story!

Shoutout to the amazing epilogue that made me teary eyed and laugh out loud. An amazing final chapter

So I may have completely blanked and read book 2 before reading book 1! 🤦‍♀️

I realised my mistake while as I was walking around Book Fair saw K.J Johnson with her stunning book covers!

Safe to say, you can do as I did and still follow along with the plot, but you will feel like you left yourself on a cliff hanger that wasn't intended and want to read book 1 asap!

Cadence is a very strong lead that isn't afraid to fight for what she wants and push back against Ryker. Ryker is fierce in his loyalty and holds true to the touch her and die attitude. Their relationship is one of fated mates, forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers.

I loved the sibling dynamic between Cadence and Callum. The banter and unwavering loyalty brought another wonderful aspect to this book.

If you enjoy dark fantasy, spicy romance and lots of twists, highly recommend adding this book to your list 🥰

Thank you so much to K.J Johnson and the Naughty Nook for providing me with this ARC.

❗️ARC REVIEW ❗️

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for bonded ruination
I’d give this book 4.5 ⭐️ and 2.5 🌶️

Can I start off by saying how much I love all of these character and how invested I am in their stories.

Ryker gives me some internal conflict but so does Cadence!
Sometimes I want to scream at them, sometimes I want to shake them and other times I want to wrap them up in a hug and tell them it’s going to be okay

What a wild ride though, a great story line, suspenseful in parts, comedic in parts filled with all of the good stuff in between.

Low key would love a book on Riorden to be next. Love him so much!

Loved the second half of this book so so much!

Will always pick up a K.J.Johnson read and you should too!!

Read as an ARC reader from the Naughty Nook bookclub!

This book was the redeemable read of the duet. The plot was a slow journey to get to, but once we were more on our way, it got better and A HEA is always a great conclusion.

I didn't particularly like the main characters and I stuck around for the side characters who i would have prefered to have more focus: Riordan and Callum.
I wish Cadence had more personality and strength. She was an improvement from the first book, she had a bit more fight in her but she was also still only thinking with her 🐱 and would bend to Ryker's masochistic whims at all times.
Ryker was an insufferable a-hole and he's not an mmc that I like.

Riordan is a golden retrover who is protective, totally swoonworthy and has Cadences best interests at heart. Same with her brother, who tries his best to get her out of her controlling and abusive situation.

Received an advanced reader copy organised by the lovely girls over at The Naughty Nook.

The Twisted Fates Duology is the perfect mix of my favourite genres — dark fantasy romance with everyone’s favourite tropes: enemies to lovers, deadly trials, and fated mates.

Reading book two and diving deeper into the story between Ryker and Cadence is an emotional and intense journey, but one you’ll definitely want to stick around for to see how it all unfolds. Their chemistry is like no other. Ryker is determined to make Cadence his, while she’s doing everything in her power not to give in.

The banter is captivating and keeps you hooked, while the action, magic, and plot leave you constantly wanting more.

Thank you, K.J. Johnson.

Review of ARC copy

I really wanted to like this but I just didn’t… it felt like there were so many different story lines and none of them got fully fleshed out they just kinda happened with no explanation or conclusion. Like how Cadence and Callum were actually going to escape or the mothers ring thing. I would have loved to see Ryker realise that maybe kidnapping someone was a bad way to go about things or always thinking of Cadence as a possession is not it… but that never happened. Or Cadence actually holding Ryker to account for any of the things he did to her but instead just let him do it and just accepted the bond. I would have loved to see more Callum and Riordian they were definitely my faves in this book. I’m sorry this one just was not it for me 😞

This is the second book in the dark fantasy romance Twisted Fates duology and my god did I love both of these books. I devoured these books and read each of them in one sitting!

Ryker really is a morally grey MMC and I am so here for it. This man will stop at nothing to protect his mate.
I adored Cadence, she was the perfect FMC, she was strong, intelligent, and just an absolute queen👑
Riordan may be my favourite character though🤭 the way this man had me giggling and kicking my feet throughout the whole book.

I thought the world building and pacing throughout this book was perfect. The banter, the tension, the trials, the found family? I loved it all.

If you love: deadly trials, fated mates, touch her & die, forced proximity - this duology is definitely for you!

Thoroughly addictive

Really enjoyed reading this second instalment. Ryker is a shadow daddy like no other! A lot darker and harder to crack the surface of and his shadows have a lot more deadly and well naughty 😝 love cadence’s journey in this but would have like her come to accept the bond in a way that felt more like her choice but she really came into her own. LOVE there is more Riordon. His sassy and comedy makes every page more exciting and hilariously devious. Just wish the villain had been a little more depth. Felt like a villain just for the sake of being one. But on the whole I really enjoyed it

What an exciting continuation of Twisted Fates. This installment of the duology was just as emotional and tension-fueled as the first book. Ryker is still fighting to prove his undying devotion to his Temptress, Cadence, in his own special way. The witty banter does continue to make an appearance in book two. I love that! It keeps me coming back for more. I LOVED how much of Callum I read about. He is one of the favorite characters. Overall, this book did flow seamlessly from book one to two. I didn't feel lost or notice any gaps in the story or plot. I saw some character growth and enjoyed the twists. Overall, this is an excellent enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, spicy romantasy.

Not a dull moment

K J Johnson has done it again! I always love her writing but this second installment of the Bonded duology… damn!

There wasn’t a single moment in this book that didn’t have me enraptured in Cadence and Ryker’s story. Trials, secrets, assassinations… and the spice 🥵🔥

From the first page, K J came in strong on this one, spicy and some light maiming in the first chapter.

I absolutely loved this book, specially Callum and Riordan. I would give my soul to read their story in full 😉

Wow! This book is dark, captivating and hot 🥵 I loved the first book and the dynamic between the MCs - this is TRUE enemies-to-lovers, and it’s delightfully dark. Don’t go into this series thinking it’s a run-of-the-mill romantasy because it’s not. The author clearly warns that the MMC is an unapologetic villain and they mean it! Having said that, I f*cking loved it and the HEA was so worth it!!!

Cadence is fierce, fearless and full of heart, while Ryker is intense, magnetic and completely relentless.

Their chemistry is explosive, their clashes addictive and their journey is raw, chaotic, and utterly satisfying.

Surely you can’t safely get slammed this much when pregnant. Again, like the first book, the horniness took centre stage. MMC wasn’t morally gray or whatever - just a randy a$$hole. FMC held promise but character wasn’t fleshed out properly Villains were boring. Just couldn’t get into beyond a certain point. Skipped an entire chunk and skimmed through final chapter.
