The Demon Overlord retired. The problem is… not everyone else did.
Galornus Prime, former Demon Overlord and current enthusiast of comfortable seating and tasteful interior décor, has finally achieved the quiet life he always wanted.
No wars. No heroes. No destiny.
Just a small town, a modest farm, and the occasional threat to his pickles. It was working.
Then Lucas found him.
Retirement, it turns out, is not a state others recognize.
Some loyalties do not end. Some problems do not stay solved. And some things, once set in motion, refuse to stop.
The worldbuilding continues to be fascinating; Willem's obsession with pickles is entertaining. Lucas is an engaging new character who added both heartwarming and hilarious moments to the story. Sally is still awesome, and the rest of the supporting cast is wonderful. Bad things happen, and the story definitely takes a stressful turn, but the resolution of the conflict was something I never imagined. I am really enjoying this series.
Band of Others was a thoroughly entertaining read that kept my attention from beginning to end. The story moved at a great pace, the characters kept me invested, and I always wanted to know what would happen next. It was one of those books that made it easy to keep turning the pages. I’m already looking forward to Book 4 and can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
Enjoyed this one very much. Highly recommended for anyone following the series.
A unexpected tale that depicts the human condition
I must admit, when i started readings this series i didnt hold much hope. However i was surprised to find the querky plot, characters and story became adictive. I take my hat off to the author who was able to simultaneously hold up a mirror to the ideocyncratic human condition. Happy reading, look forward to the next plot twist.
So much fun. Lucas was must protect, love how they get around Willem's orders. So many misunderstandings and secrets. Knew when the angel popped up that she would be the next to join. Awkward ending with Clara though. Tom is gonna pay for that. The goat song at the beginning confused me, but made sense further in. Looking forward to the next one.

I caught myself audibly laughing multiple times while reading this one. I don’t know why, but this series not only locks me in for the great story but also its great humour and cliff hangers! Already pumped for the 4th instalment.
I never imagined that I would be cheering on a demon overlord but, three books later, I cannot find a reason not to. These books are brilliantly contrived, imaginatively twisted and deliciously demonic. More please.
Can’t wait for next book. M. H. Foster does an amazing job of mixing charm, wit and humor into each of his books. I seldom laugh out loud when reading, but that happened more than once. Honestly, you have to try the first book, you’ll be hooked by chapter three. Thanks for sharing this journey with your readers, hoping for many more books in this series.
I’ve really enjoyed the three books in this series and I’d love for there to be some more. I’m not a wordsmith by any stretch of the imagination, so I won’t drone on about writing styles etc, but if you want a good read that makes you smile (and occasionally chuckle) this is a great place to start.
I wanted to give this book (and series) fewer stars. It's not Pratchett or Sheckley any of my old favorites. I have always loved humorous S&SF. This one crept up on me... Gently got into my brain.. All I can say us "More! I want more!"
I've enjoyed this series...and there's an obvious cliffhanger ending for Book #4, so yay.
I love Lower Middleton. I love the people, their comings, their goings, their safe little lives. It's so reminiscent of Tadfield in Terry Pratchett's "Good Omens". Sally and Prometheus and Clara and Mrs. Crankshaw and Catherine Blackwood and Tom Fletcher and Rajani. - I LOVE THEM ALL.
But, I am getting quite tired of Willem Porter. And it's irritating that I only get HIS point of view. Yes, I get it, he's the retired Demon Overlord and it IS his story. He's just such an idiot, clueless and stupid. Yet he's written like this overbearing, pompous, entitled fool who thinks he knows better than everyone else and deserves every good thing. I dunno...it's a character arc that has just gotten OLD. Probably because the guy never seems to learn anything or appreciate anything or be truly grateful for anything...he always chalks it up to dumb luck or something HE did.
I want MH Foster to write some little novellas from Mrs. Crankshaw or Rajani or Clara's point of view! PLEASE!
This series continues to amaze me, on how well written the characters are. And how much invested we become of their lives. I was delighted that lucas joined us in this book. I dont think I ve ever had a book where there was no side character I disliked. I love their interactions and day to day lives. And of course the internal monologue Willem has. And how they save the day in the end without meaning to! I am so glad to know that its not the end of the series as I previously thought.
Thank the pseudo random ai gods the first book in the series popped up in my feed on what to read next. I’d been on the dark fantasy genre for 3 months and had been very heavy. The wry wit, humor and all the feels along with fantastic characters, writing and story development were a breath of fresh air. Consumed all 3 in a week with much snorting, laugh out loud and pure enjoyment. Now, I need the 4th. Waiting with bated breath.
The author keeps up the witty dialogue and general flow of a good story very well. I'm still able to laugh at the ridiculousness of most of the statements made.
The book is a little more tense than the others mostly due to the nature of what is happening. There isn't that much tension in the book but it felt like it lost the luster and cozy vibes of the other two. The romance is still questionable at best and is probably the one thing that could have been done better.
I’ve really enjoyed reading this series so much it’s lighthearted and amusing while discussing the very fabric of humanity and good vs evil. I was worried the books would fall off because I couldn’t see a way to continue making them interesting without becoming too heavy or to keep them jovial without becoming cliche but I continue to be surprised. This third one is my favorite yet.
Wow! What an original story like I never had the chance to read before! Funny with endearing characters (even the animals), I read the first 3 books in a row (the next isn't out yet). This author is promising and I can't wait to read the next. I hope there will be plenty more!
For anyone looking to take a break from the intensity of our current reality, this is a fabulous read full of truths about humanity, through the eyes of a heroic, demonic, beet farmer. Insightful and fantastic. MH Foster has a vivid imagination, great sense of humor, and can weave an excellent tale. Next, please!
A good story like this series, lets you decide how you feel, particularly parent traps beautifully done-the children are precious, precocious, and frighteningly brave. No parents, just this cleverly disguised demon lord who’s trying to retire but trouble comes to his disguise
An enjoyable, heartwarming, and witty series. Each book has built on the previous with new characters, development, and level of commitment to the town of Lower Middleton. Plenty of smiles to be had. There are a few sections of heightened tension where Willem teetered in his decisions. Just enough of a hook at the end to make book 4 even more welcomed.
I've now read all three of the Gentle Apocalypse books and my only gripe is that now I've got to wait for book four. Seriously though, I've really enjoyed all three books so far and can't wait until the next instalment. Not bad from someone who doesn't normally read Fantasy Genre but these have really hooked me.
AnotherGreat Addition to the Demon Overlord Series
I am so thoroughly enjoying this series and have told just about everyone I know about it. And while I’m not happy about having to wait for the next book, it will give me time to reread the first two.
The Gentle Apocalypse series is a delightful treat full of humor, irony, and heartfelt moments. It’s light reading to cleanse one’s palate of everyday nonsense. Definitely worth a read.
