Is this fear mongering … OR is she just giving you the information and tools to have informed consent decision making and the TRUTH of the world makes you wholly uncomfy?
So many are truly ignorant of the things they put in their body (me included); yes it is pretty scary when you look at straight in its eyes and don’t just blindly assume random strangers (government bodies, CEOs, safety agencies, etc.) have your overall health in mind. No one will take care of you like YOU will.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read; I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a nonfiction book like I enjoyed this one. I will warn you, reader, there are tons of chemical names in here that even go over my RN Brain, but you don’t really need to know them as much as you need to just get the gist of the harm all these things can cause.

Why do I believe this is NOT fear mongering? Because the author continually reminds the reader throughout that it is IMPOSSIBLE to live a toxin-free life; and the best low tox decisions are the decisions that work well with your family, the part of life you’re in, etc. She is NOT presenting misleading information to incite panic or anxiety; now, if this information does give you a little anxiety, now maybe that is a little of a good thing. She even includes a FULL chapter that explains to the reader how to not stress over this “low tox” lifestyle and not becoming anxious over every new toxic/chemical headline.

I think this book comes with tons of great information and really digs into the weeds. There is a ‘notes’ section which looks to reference all the studies she has based this book on, however there are no direct references pointing to the exact info she talks about to the exact study she pulled the info from. I will say, in general, women’s health is not thoroughly studied like it ought to be; I can only assume that a lot of these points she is making haven’t been IN DEPTH studied because governing bodies probably don’t give two farts about individual human safety… she continues to state throughout the book that lack of proof to prove that a substance isn’t harmful is not proof that the substance is safe. Maybe making the change to something that is KNOWN to be safe is better than staying with a substance that ‘might be okay.. idk maybe?’

I thoroughly enjoyed this and it really helped me continue my easy switching of products to less tox products (I had already started switching around the time I was pregnant/gave birth). Realizing that my health has direct impact on my child’s health motivates me even more to make certain switches that work for me and my family.

I do recommend this book to readers who are either starting their low tox journey or want more information on what it all means. By no means is she trying to scare you into changing everything all at once (she literally pleads with you to not do this because she did and it lead to exhaustion and more stress), and I definitely don’t think she wants you to have a panic attack over all this information; sometimes the truth of our world is just, in fact, scary.

The author explains the purpose of each chapter clearly. She offers the Clean 3 Framework that focuses on what we eat, apply, and how we live. She gives a focus to what we can change instead of worrying about what we can't change.

She mentions that research suggests limiting certain additives to improve behavioral symptoms in children, but doesn't reference the study or list the additives. This reduces actionable interventions.

I wish she had an index of better products. She references all this research she has done, but doesn't actually give a list of which products are low/non-toxic. She offers ways to reduce exposure but never recommends products. yet, I know she has preferred products she uses. It would be nice if she shared them.

She mentions a lot of research findings, but without specifics, it's impossible to double check the information. I want to go straight to the source. She also doesn't list the brands found to be contaminated. I want to avoid them. What good is a book where the author did all this research if she doesn't share specifics. Ironically, she states that credible information explains where the data comes from and cites studies or other sources...but she doesn't do this herself in a manner that is easy to follow.

She does have a reference section, but it is very strange. It quotes snippets of the sentence from the book followed by the research study. In-text citations, footnotes, or hyperlinks would be more helpful.

She mentions limonene, linalool, and alpha-pinene as toxic. These are natural compounds, but she doesn't explain why she considers them toxic. While I know they can be problematic for some, an explanation of why she considers them so would be nice. She is positioning herself as an expert, but not explaining her reasoning.

Overall, the book was interesting, but fell short on actionable suggestions, product recommendations, and easy-to-find references. This is a good start to a book, but could use some improvements to make it truly stellar. It appears the author has an extensive amount of knowledge and training, and I'd appreciate a more extensive book from her.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.

This book is difficult to review. Firstly, it reads like a biology lab report. It is impossible to follow all the scientific names of things and chemistry reactions. The title made me think it would be every day info and solutions for every day people, but it read like an encyclopedia instead. For the vast majority of the book, it felt like a lot of fear mongering. It would have been easier if footnotes were included so I could immediately see the source for a number of claims in this book. I see where the author’s heart is at, but it feels like she is just throwing out a huge amount of 'evidence' that has not been replicated in peer review studies. She frequently uses words like "may still" or "possibly" when discussing dangers of various things. This basically leads to the final conclusion that nothing is safe. This also made it harder to know the most important parts to pay special attention to. One example, "The evidence shows that every scratch, puff of smoke, and minute of high heat cooking may contribute incrementally to overall chemical exposures." I'm not sure this type of writing is helpful.

Another major issue I have with the book is that it doesn't seem to take dose dependent relationships into consideration. For example, it discusses healthcare workers and exposure to bleach and peroxide based cleaners. She states, "strongest associations with high level disinfectants while milder products were not consistently linked to adverse effects." I fear she is using fear mongering when really research has shown low doses of commonly used products are safe.

One thing I did really appreciate about this book was her encouragements against perfection in this losing battle. She says things like “choose connection over control” and “make better choices when you can, not replace everything at once” and I appreciate that.

While I found this book really helpful and informative, I also had some mixed feelings about it.

I appreciate that Dr. Burkart backs up so much of her advice with science and research. As someone who is very evidence-driven, I liked seeing the explanations behind why certain products, ingredients, and habits may impact our health. There is a lot of useful information here about reducing toxin exposure, making better choices, and creating healthier habits, and I learned quite a bit from it, even as someone who is quite well-versed in the holistic wellness space.

However, I do think the book occasionally veers into fear mongering territory. While I absolutely agree that going low tox can have real short and long term health benefits, I struggled with some of the all or nothing messaging. There were several moments where it felt like the author was saying there is no room for moderation and that we must completely eliminate certain products or habits. I personally think that approach can backfire because it may scare people away from making positive changes in the first place.

For me, the strongest parts of this book were the practical tips and science-based explanations. The weakest parts were the blanket statements that did not leave much room for nuance. I think people are more likely to make lasting changes when they feel empowered rather than frightened.

There is so much to love about this book, and I think it offers valuable information for anyone interested in reducing toxin exposure and improving their health. I just wish some of the messaging had been a little more balanced and less absolute.

This is a comprehensive guide to minimizing harmful chemicals and other toxins in your family’s air, food, clothing, home, water and more. The author is a toxicologist and she walks you through the risks, what the science says, and how to minimize exposure for every risk. As a mom, I’ve researched this stuff a lot in the past, and her information and advice is similar to what I’ve read in the past. I appreciate her three level advice, where you deal with the products that are most used and that have the biggest impact first (such as drinking filtered water), replace second level things as you run out (like switching to simple cleaning products and safer makeup as you restock), and the level three things last. I also appreciated that she stresses that every step makes a positive difference and you don’t have to obsess over every element of your life. Good advice, with lots of info. Skip to the TLDR advice in every section for the quick suggestions.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher Crown Publishing for this 3‑star eARC.
Reading The Low-Tox Solution honestly made me feel like I was back in college sitting in a high-level science class—especially ironic since I was a finance major and never went near the science building. There’s a lot of dense, technical information here, and while it’s clearly well-researched, it wasn’t always the easiest to digest.
That said, I did come away with a sense of urgency about being more mindful of what I’m buying—especially the packaged, “inside the store” foods. For the most part, we stick to the basics like fruits, veggies, meats, and eggs, but real life with kids means crackers, bars, and convenience snacks are still part of the mix. This book definitely had me rethinking those choices and wanting to do better, even if I don’t overhaul everything overnight.
Overall, I appreciated the message more than the execution. It’s informative and eye-opening, but at times felt a little overwhelming for the average reader.

Written by a toxicologist, this book is a comprehensive guide that brings awareness to the harmful chemicals and toxins that surround us. The author shares the risks, the science, and how to take action in minimizing exposure to the toxins in our world today.

As someone who has been in the holistic health space for over 15 years, I found this book to be a wonderful guide for those just coming into awareness of the importance of minimizing toxins in their everyday lives. I wish a book like this was available years ago! So many people are oblivious to the things they put in and, on their bodies, and the way those products impact our overall health. Most people trust that the governing agencies have our best interest in mind but unfortunately that is just not true.

While some might read this book and consider it negative and fear-mongering, I do not at all. Also, many people like to get angry at the person that brings these things to light. However, staying ignorant doesn’t help anything nor does blaming the messenger. It is scary to come to the realization that most products all around us are harmful – our clothing, food, air, home products, personal care products, water and more but awareness is important.

The author does a great job of emphasizing that it is impossible to live a life free of toxin exposure. She isn’t presenting information to incite panic and fear – she is informing and encouraging how to make better choices for you and your loved ones. It’s not about perfection. She gives tips on how to go about changing the products you are using in a simple, low-stress way.

Just a few notes about the book:
- Due to being in the wellness space this book was quite redundant for me – so just beware if you are into holistic living, low-tox living this is a more basic book and you won’t learn anything new (I didn’t learn anything) but I still definitely recommend for those new to their journey

-The first part of this book does have a LOT of chemical names but that isn’t as important as the fact that these items can cause harm.

-The book is broken up into sections which makes it easy to read bite size pieces of information at a time without getting overwhelmed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Crown Publishing for an advanced copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A informative overview for a beginner or readers with a moderate level of knowledge about non-toxic living. I believed it offered a very in depth explanation for each topic it covered while also being realistic and gracious to the average person who may not be able to do everything non-toxic.

I enjoyed the topics that this book presented as I think that there is a lot of unnecessary chemicals and additives in most everyday items. However, this book is difficult for the average person to read. Even though I understood most of what was described, I also have some background in the sciences. Had this been presented a little more clearly, I think most people would find this book useful and easy to read.
