In this heartfelt romance from the author of Always, in December and Yours for the Season, a bittersweet Christmas countdown opens the door to healing, hope . . . and maybe even love.

Ali has always loved Christmas, but this year she doesn’t think she’ll make it through. Christmas was always her and her best friend Robyn’s Every year, they exchanged Advent calendars filled with challenges. Tell the hot guy at the coffee shop you like him. Delete your ex’s number. Throw out the bathroom scales.

But this Christmas, Robyn is gone, because she didn’t get the heart transplant she needed.

There is one last calendar, though—given to Ali before Robyn died, with a promise to open it in December.

The first challenge sends Ali to the Alps, where she takes a seasonal job at the ski lodge that she and Robyn had planned to visit together. But when another challenge leads her co-workers to think she’s dating her boss—the stoic, seriously hot Leo—things get complicated.

To save her embarrassment, Leo agrees to play along. As Ali spends more time with him, she realizes that he’s grieving, too. And as he helps her complete Robyn’s challenges, she starts to wonder if their fake relationship could become something real.

But the truth behind Leo’s grief could bring them closer . . . or tear them apart for good.

Christmas was always Ali and her best friend Robyn's favorite holiday—every year they made each other an advent calendar with challenges to complete before Christmas.

But Robyn didn't get the heart transplant she desperately needed, and Ali doesn’t know how she will get through this first holiday season without her. Fortunately, Robyn was thinking ahead and she gave Ali one last Advent Calendar-making her PROMISE to follow through on their tradition.

And, Ali has no intention of letting her down.

The first challenge is to Book a flight to Chatel-the Alpine village and ski resort in southeastern France, directly on the Swiss border. (Google it-it’s gorgeous!)

And, when she gets there, it will be the start of 24 days carefully planned to help Ali to move forward.

After, an accidental “meet cute” with a hot guy named Leo-she finds herself “fake dating” him, and going on dates that would rival those planned on the “Bachelor” franchise!

I found Emily Stone’s latest Christmas book to be very predictable, so it might not be my new favorite by the author, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy it!

In fact, at one point I was DESPERATE to read what Robyn’s last challenge on Christmas Eve would be-and when I read it-I got teary eyed even though I had an inkling of what it would say!

Ultimately it is hopeful and romantic, despite the theme of grief.

The author even thoughtfully provided 24 challenges at the end of the book for her readers who might wish that they had their own Advent Calendar to follow!

I am glad that there is always a new Christmas story by this author to look forward to each year.

Counting Down to You by Emily Stone
Narrated by Rebecca Norfolk

Ali's best friend is gone now. She was waiting for a heart that never arrived and then it was too late and she was dead. It's been almost a year and it's time to start opening the Advent calendar from Robyn. Every year Ali and Robyn made exchanged Advent calendars with each other telling the other to do things they usually wouldn't do for one reason or another.

This year's calendar sends Ali to the Alps and because she has the greatest boss and co-workers ever, she has a month sabbatical to do this thing that Robyn wanted her to do. Everyone has been worried about Ali, going on as if business as usual, never taking the time to really mourn her best friend. So off Ali goes and things get very, very interesting.

There is this guy, a guy she ran into at the hospital and it turns out he's her temporary boss as she works a temporary job at the fantastic ski lodge Robyn picked for Ali. And they are going to pretend they are a couple. It's all so silly and embarrassing and it doesn't help that Ali is very attracted to this man. But, of course, they don't tell each other things, they hold back things from each other, and this fact leads to a lot of more miscommunications and chaos.

The story is very sweet and sad but also hopeful. I will admit that once I realized just how bitter Ali felt to almost everyone who was close to her, she lost a bit of her shine for me. It's disconcerting when characters think others should know what they want without telling them or without giving them a heads up that they are being judged for not guessing how they are expected to act or react. No one is perfect, Ali least of all, but she's only judging everyone else. Still, the story is cute, overall, and everyone should have such good friends as Ali.

Thanks to my library and Libby for this audiobook

Touching story about facing grief and taking chances.

Earlier this year, Ali's best friend, confidante, soulmate, roommate, heart sister Robyn died. Ever since they met while in college, the two of them had been inseparable through life's ups and downs. Every year, the two of them would make advent calendars for each other, giving each other tasks that they needed to accomplish--some funny, some adventurous, some pushing each other out of their comfort zones. Robyn left one last calendar for Ali to complete, and Ali isn't sure she wants to face saying goodbye for the last time. When she opens the first task, it sends her to the French Alps, where Ali gets a temp job in a hotel. Before she leaves London, another task has her take a photo with a hot guy--and wouldn't you know it, that hot guy is her boss and now everyone at the hotel thinks they are dating.

I thought this was a really beautiful testament to friendship and working your way through something that seems impossible to face. I didn't particularly like Ali some of the time, but I could understand her pain. However I didn't love the turn the book took towards the end, I thought she was being unreasonable and ridiculous and the coincidences seemed a bit too convenient and contrived. I really liked all of the characters and adventures, the entire cast of characters added to the tale and made it more well-rounded.

Overall though, like the other books I've read by this author, this is a lovely story and deeper than it might seem on the surface. Just a warning for those of you who like closed door romance, this book definitely has some open door spicy scenes so be prepared.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

4.5 Advent Calendar Stars (rounded up for tears) *now available

Emily Stone is an auto-read author for me, and this one delivers all the feels! Her books frequently center on the holiday season and romance; this one also has a heavy dose of grieving. I loved the Alps setting.

Ali and her best friend from college, Robyn, loved Christmas and frequently made Advent Calendars with challenges for each other to complete. I love this idea! This one is bittersweet, though, for Ali, as she lost Robyn to heart failure, and this calendar is the last remembrance from her dear friend. As Ali opens and then completes each daily challenge, as promised, she’s reminded of their friendship.

Ali’s boss notices that she’s still grieving and sends her on a sabbatical. Thanks to a challenge from Robyn’s Advent Calendar, Ali picks Châtel, a ski town, to fill in at the front desk of a hotel. She’ll spend a month there and try to process her grief.

There’s a funny mix-up due to Ali taking on one of Robyn’s challenges in the calendar. Ali has an awful ex, so Robyn challenged her to take a photo with a hot man and post it to social media to make her ex jealous. As fate would have it, the hot man she manages to snap a photo of just happens to be her new boss in Châtel!

For reasons we don’t know, Leo (the hot man) agrees to fake date Ali. As Ali settles into her new job and continues to complete her challenges from Robyn, Leo is often there to pitch in. The chemistry is definitely there for the pair, and I wondered if they would give in to temptation.

As the days go by and Ali leans into the job, the gorgeous Alpine setting, skiing, hiking, and all the Alps have to offer, she gets closer to Leo. But he’s not been completely honest with her. Will Ali be able to survive another heartbreak? When her ex shows back up, will she be tempted to reunite?

I cried several times in this one and grew to root for Ali and Leo to fight through and find happiness. I loved seeing the challenges Robyn crafted for each day and how Ali completed them. Full of friendship, budding romance, and grief, this was a great read for me. Don't miss the author's suggested challenge list at the end.

This made for a wonderful buddy read with Jayme. Be sure to read her review to see whether it resonated with her as much as it did with me.

My thanks to Ballantine/Dell for the opportunity to read and honestly review this one.

This would make a perfect Christmas gift!

Emily Stone is the queen of Christmas novels as far as I'm concerned. "Counting Down to You" is a fake dating holiday romance that's also simultaneously an exploration of grief and discovering what "family" really means. I found myself swept up in Ali's (FMC) life and her grief from the very first chapter. Her best friend, Robyn, died while waiting for a heart transplant. Ali and Robyn loved Christmas. They lived for it each year, and they would create and do daily Advent calendars full of challenges ranging from things like "sing karaoke" and "do something that scares you" to "call your brother" or "take a picture with a stranger and put it on Instagram" to challenge each other outside of their comfort zones. This year, Robyn left a calendar for Ali, and it will be her last since her passing. When her boss forces her to take a sabbatical away from work, Ali finds herself flying to the French Alps to complete one of Robyn's challenges. While there, she gets a temporary job working at the hotel where she'll be staying. It turns out, the random man she took a picture with before she left, Leo Brooks (MMC), works at the hotel where she'll be staying and working during her vacation. All of her new coworkers think Ali and Leo are dating because of the Instagram photo. He agrees to fake-date her to spare her the embarrassment of coming clean, and to help his "reputation," which has apparently suffered recently. I enjoyed this book a lot. I think the grief aspect is what worked best for me. Having personally lost people around the holidays, I know all too well how Ali felt throughout the course of this story. Their absence can alter things that used to mean everything, and their loss can create an unclosable chasm of sorrow and sadness, amplified by holidays that emphasize togetherness, family, happiness, joy, and love. I liked watching Ali perform the tasks on Ali's Advent calendar, as well as seeing her inner monologue play out as she talks to Robyn throughout the challenges and the book. Robyn knew how to push Ali's buttons, and she really went all out to get her to the book's ultimate conclusion. Some of the tasks were small (do karaoke), some seemed small but were monumental for her (call your brother), and others were seemingly insurmountable (say goodbye). I admit, I found this book to be rather predictable, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. In the past, I have loved how Emily Stone always balances heavier themes with holiday whimsy and romance, but I'd say this book places a little less focus on the holiday whimsy and romance this go around. I did think there was a bit of chemistry missing between Leo and Ali, though it does get greater as the book goes on. His rationale for helping Ali is very vague at the start, but it all becomes clear at the book's end. Leo has his own set of feelings and goings on to sort through. He and Ali wind up leaning on each other despite the complications that arise for them and between them throughout the book. It's all very convoluted, so make sure you're paying attention! I did enjoy the ending for the most part. I thought that the pacing was a little off here and there, but overall, I liked this one. Just go in knowing the focus is on the grief journey rather than the romance.

Thank you to NetGalley, Emily Stone, Ballantine, and Dell for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

Basically like PS I Love You but with her late best friend using an advent calendar to force her to learn how to live again without her and to stop stagnating in her life. Except these challenges bring her to Leo. Gotta say, I really liked Leo. Some serious green flags. And due to circumstances - which frankly were quite cute - they end up in a fake dating situation. Love those. But there is a plot twist that I kind of saw coming. However, it didn't hurt the book that I did. I still enjoyed it.

I would call this fairly slow burn and I loved the evolution of the relationship. The setting, the advent calendar, the side characters were all so very well done. It did have a Christmas feel to it given the advent and all of that. But this did also deal with some deeper themes such as grief. However, it was well done and not in an emotionally devastating way. Ultimately, you got the feel good you want in a holiday book but one if you're looking for something that is a bit more pulling on your heartstrings rather than cutesy funny Christmas romance.

Christmas time, an Advent Calendar and the Alps?? YES!!!!!!

Ali has had a rough year. Her very best friend, Robyn, passed away 10 months ago. Ali is finding that her grief runs deep, and she is simply existing in life- no excitement for her job, city, etc. Her boss at the job placement center is worried for her, and tells her to take a sabbatical for a month. It is the 1st of December, and this date has importance to Ali. She and Robyn would always make each other advent calendars. However, instead of chocolate in the calendar, they would each write 24 challenges that the other had to do before December of the next year. Before Robyn died, she made Ali promise to open the calendar that she had made to help her friend through the grief she knew she would feel after Robyn's death.

As Ali opens the first card, Robyn writes that Ali should book a flight to Chatel, a ski resort and chalet in Southern France. Ali decides to follow through on the challenges throughout the month of December, and books her flight. She also has Cal, her friend and co-worker, find her a job to do while at the chalet, and ends up being the customer service manager for the VIP's. On the way to the airport, she opens the second card and Robyn tells her to take a picture with a "hot, handsome stranger". This is where she meets Leo. As she is getting into the cab he helps her, and she randomly takes his picture and posts it on Instagram! The people at the Chalet see it and are cautious around Ali when she arrives. Then she discovers that Leo is the manager of the chalet! The two decide to "fake date", for reasons unknown at first.

What follows is a sweet story about the grief process, re-discovering your passion, forgiveness, connections and opening yourself up to live again.

I have not read this author before, but found her writing very compelling. As we walk through this process with Ali, I felt her grief right along with her. I also loved how she puts herself out there with the challenges Robyn thoughtfully wrote. Robyn knew Ali so well that she crafted challenges that would draw her friend out and help heal her. Some were lighthearted and fun, others helped her build bridges of connection to others, and then there were the ones that spoke right to Ali's character- where she would help people because that is what she finds joy in doing.

I wasn't sure about Leo at first. But as the story progresses, his past is slowly revealed, and I found myself swooning (a little)! He is a quiet character at first and is a bit gruff. However, as we learn more, we see that he has had a challenging year as well. The two of them together have so much chemistry.

The other characters in the story are written just as well, and I loved the connection that Ali makes with Lucie. It has an enemies to friend vibe that is realistic.

My only "con" (if you will!) was Ali's attitude about her relationship with her brother at the end. With her positive growth, I guess I wanted more from her character in this aspect. It did have a high note, and I hope it goes well in the future for them.

For my friends that prefer low spice! Overall a slow burn, but at the end there are two really steamy scenes that I had to skim over! 😅😅

Overall, a lovely, hope filled story and I will definitely be looking for other books by this author!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Dell for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review!

Christmas in the French Alps, a fake-dating romance, and one very meaningful Advent calendar? I was completely on board.

I especially liked how Robyn’s daily challenges gave Ali little pushes to reconnect with life, with each one feeling like another piece of her friend’s personality left behind for her.

Leo was such a lovely part of the romance. He was quietly caring and patient, and I liked how naturally he became someone Ali could lean on while she worked through everything she was carrying. Their fake-dating situation gradually turned into something much sweeter, and watching their connection grow alongside Ali’s confidence made the romance really satisfying.

The grief made this more emotional than your typical Christmas romance, and I definitely got teary along the way. But the overall feeling was still warm and hopeful, with the snowy setting, friendships, and Advent challenges bringing plenty of cosy holiday moments.

A sweet, emotional Christmas read that left me smiling through a few tears.

Definitely my favorite book by Emily Stone, which is saying a lot because I've loved them all and always look forward to a new one this time each year! There was something so beautiful about Ali's friendship with Robyn. Her grief was so well portrayed and I absolutely loved the journey she took to move past her grief and find her joy and purpose, and of course, the romance was perfect.

A tender, hopeful Christmas read. I look forward to Emily Stone's holiday books so much and this one was no exception.

Christmas was always Ali and her best friend Robyn’s favorite holiday , their tradition was to make each other Advent calendars filled with 24 challenges leading up to Christmas. But Robyn didn’t get the heart transplant she needed, and now Ali is facing her first holiday season without her. Thankfully, Robyn planned ahead and left Ali one final Advent calendar, making her promise to complete every challenge.

The first? Fly to Châtel, a gorgeous Alpine village on the French‑Swiss border. From there, Ali begins 24 carefully crafted days meant to help her move forward. And then there’s Leo.

Ali’s unexpected run‑in with Leo launches a fake‑dating storyline that’s equal parts sweet and stabilizing. Leo is calm, kind, and deeply attentive — someone who lets her grief exist without crowding it. Their connection builds through swoony, Bachelor‑worthy dates: snowy lifts, cozy fires, and small shared moments that feel like healing. In a season full of ache, Leo becomes the soft place where joy starts to flicker again.

Emily Stone’s latest Christmas novel is sweet, romantic and full of heart. I was desperate to reach Robyn’s final challenge, and when I read it, I cried multiple times.

Despite the grief woven through the story, it’s ultimately romantic and hopeful. And I loved that the author includes 24 challenges at the end for readers who want their own Advent journey.

A cozy holiday tradition I’m always happy to return to.

Thank you to Ballantine, NetGalley, and Emily Stone for the ARC of Counting Down to You!

When you lose your best friend, and she leaves you an advent calendar filled with things to do during your first December without her, you know you’re in for an emotional journey. Each day brings a new activity, either something the two of you had talked about doing together or something she knew would push you out of your comfort zone.

For my friends who love P.S. I Love You, this one is for you!

This was such a wonderful holiday rom-com with a little sadness and grief woven throughout. For anyone who has lost someone and finds themselves missing them a little extra during the holidays, this book feels like a warm hug and a gentle reminder that love and memories stay with us, even after loss.

And, of course, we have some of my favorite romance tropes, including a chance meeting, fake dating, workplace romance, he falls first, and finding love after loss!

I absolutely loved Ali and Leo! There’s just something about a quirky FMC paired with a broody MMC who has a secretive past that gets me every time.

This book also had some twists and turns I wasn’t expecting! I was completely hooked and ended up reading it in a day.

Emily Stone is the author to go to if you’re looking for a heartwarming and emotional Christmas book that will make you cry both happy and sad tears. Her latest is a story about grief, losing your best friend, and learning how to live life again through an Advent calendar challenge that the main character's best friend left behind for her. I loved the alpine setting, the budding romance had me curious, and I’m always in for a good adventure. This was such a touching story about loss, friendship, and finding a way to move forward while still holding on to the people we love. Great on audio!

Christmas was always Ali’s favorite time of year. She and her best friend Robyn always created advent calendars for each other filled with challenges to do. This year however, Ali knows she needs to begin to open the final advent calendar. Robyn didn’t get the heart transplant she needed and Ali is filled with grief. The first challenge is to head to the Alps, a place where she and Robyn had always planned to go. The second challenge leads to people believing she is dating her new boss. Leo generously decides to play along for the duration of her time there.

Emily Stone knows how to write grief, relationships, and friendships. I loved that Robyn pushed Ali to get out of her comfort zone, and I so enjoyed the ride of watching her do it. I did not expect the third act miscommunication to be what it was, but as soon as I got there I knew exactly what was going on. While Ali had some issues with a few of the people in her life, I truly adored the people she surrounded herself with. This book was so filled with heart and a fantastic read.

Is it even Christmas without a new Emily Stone book?

She always writes such heartfelt, thoughtful stories. This was more of a friendship story than romance, but it was a lovely balance between the two and made it a much deeper tale.

I've seen the "countdown" and "checklist" trope in so many stories, but this didn't seem worn out. The way that it was done and the reason behind it actually added to the story. What I loved most that it was the self examination of what matters most and learning to find yourself before committing to someone else.

I also liked the ski slope setting that made it feel cozy and holiday without all the typical christmas tropes and content. Just overall a lovely winter read!

I loooved this book! It was heartbreaking, beautiful, emotional, and romantic. Everything I look for in a book! Emily Stone did such a wonderful job developing this story and her characters, and I can’t recommend it enough!!

It follows Ali, who is grieving the loss of her best friend, Robyn. Before she passed away, Robyn left her one last Advent calendar filled with challenges, which leads Ali to a ski lodge in the French Alps. There’s also a fake-dating situation with her boss, Leo, so of course I was hooked!!

I loved how the story brought together grief, friendship, and finding love while learning how to move forward. The Advent calendar was such a special way to keep Robyn a part of Ali’s story, and I loved watching Ali and Leo’s relationship develop.

The Christmas setting made me love it even more!! Such a beautiful holiday read that I can’t wait to reread every year. Go check it out!!

I love Emily Stone and look forward to her winter novel every year. This one takes a deeper look at the heavy and complicated grief that comes with losing someone you love, all set against the backdrop of the Christmas season.

I thought the Advent calendar was such a sweet and meaningful touch, especially as a way to help cope with grief during the holidays. It was an emotional read while still capturing the cozy Christmas atmosphere I’ve come to look forward to from this author.

Counting on You is a poignant, heartfelt Christmas romance. This story is a bit deeper, a bit less sugar-coated than many Christmas romances, because our main character Ali has lost her best friend, Robyn, and it’s her first Christmas without her. Before she died, Robyn left Ali an advent calendar filled with challenges for Ali to fulfill. Her first challenge is to go to the Alps, where Ali is hired as a temporary employee at a hotel. It is there that she meets Leo, the handsome hotel manager, and although there are undeniable sparks, they are also both grieving, and there are secrets between them that threaten the possibility of a relationship. It was oftentimes wonderful, oftentimes sad, always love-filled, as Ali completes the challenges, and having Leo by her side makes it better. I received an advance reader copy of this book.

This was a cute read, to put it sweetly. Would I necessarily call this a Christmas story? Not really. Aside from the story taking place in December and the FMC opening an advent calendar that was left behind by her late best friend, there wasn’t much that made it feel particularly Christmas themed. We followed our Fmc, Ali as she grieves and navigates the first Christmas without her best friend in her life. Her first stop is France where she meets our mmc, Leo who also happens to be her boss at a ski lodge. I wish the flashbacks between Ali, and the best friend Robyn were introduced more clearly. They would suddenly appear in the middle of scenes without much warning, which made the transitions feel a little abrupt and sometimes confusing. This definitely had a Hallmark style feel to it so I enjoyed it on that front but I didn’t get that happy Christmas feeling I crave.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher, Ballantine for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

I have loved Emily Stone since first reading her book "Yours for the Season" last year. I was looking forward to reading Counting Down to You and it did not disappoint. The story was different than Yours for the Season, but it was similar in that it evoked tears. Emily Stone has a knack for writing tear-jerker holiday romances.

I loved the premise of this book - we have Ali, whose best friend (Robyn) had recently passed away. Ali is still reeling from her death (and missing her), but goes through with Advent Calendar challenges that she and Robyn had every year. These challenges encouraged Ali to get out of her comfort zone. Although it's an emotional journey because it's the last season of challenges, it's also an opportunity for Ali to come out of her shell. Ali's employer gives her a sabbatical (to help her with her grief) and this gives Ali the opportunity to complete one of the challenges, which is to visit Châtel, a ski town,

There's a meet cute with Ali and a hot man, where Ali takes a photo with him and posts on social media. Much to Ali's surprise, this hot man turns out to be her new boss in Châtel. Ali's post is seen by the employees at Châtel and much to Ali's chagrin, Leo (hot boss) agrees to fake date Ali to keep the ruse up. There is definite chemistry between the two and they get to know each other better - Leo also helps Ali complete her challenges.

Ali gets closer to Leo, but then comes to find that he had a secret that he did not share with her; Their fledging relationship takes a hit, but thankfully, Ali and Leo come back together and get their HEA.

True with all Emily Stone novels, I cried many times. It's a fabuous story of the process of grief, figuring out your passion, learning to forgive, and opening yourself to love again.

I have LOVED every single Emily Stone book and this one is no different.

Oof. The grief hits so well in this one. I was tearing up throughout. I love how solidly I stayed in the story. The pacing was perfect.

The romance in tender and a slow build, I really enjoyed it.

I will be shouting about this one from the rooftops.

Ali has an advent calendar of challenges to fulfil.

What an utterly gorgeous read. I adored Counting Down to You. In her inimitable style, Emily Stone has created a beautifully romantic read that is simply packed with emotion, depth and the most perfect understanding of human nature.

The structure of the novel is superb because the advent calendar of challenges gives a framework upon which events in the past are explained, the present action is driven and future possibilities are hinted at. The advent calendar also makes the reader want to create something equally special for those they love in real life.

The French Alps setting is glorious. There’s enough description to make the reader feel they are there without overpowering the narrative. It feels both Christmassy and realistic. There’s an appeal to all the senses too so that reading Counting Down to You is both immersive and enchanting.

The characters feel so incredibly real. I loved the spark of attraction between Ali and Leo and the romantic aspect of Counting Down to You is absolutely gripping (and occasionally quite sexy!). There’s no cliched guarantee of a happy ending because Emily Stone has created flawed and believable people for whom life can be a challenge as well as a joy. You’ll need to read Counting Down to You to find out exactly what happens, but I found myself exclaiming aloud and giving Ali advice on several occasions.

The setting, romance, characters and plot in Counting Down to You all make for a wonderful book, but it is the themes that elevate the story into such a mesmerising read. Emily Stone explores aspects like grief, family, ambition, self knowledge and forgiveness with such a skilful blend of depth and lightness of touch that there’s a real impact on the reader. I’d defy any reader not to find a lump in the throat or tear in their eye at some point. And I adored the ambiguity of ‘You’ in the title – it might refer to Leo or Robyn and equally, it might just be Ali herself as she discovers as much about herself in the story as she does about any of the others.

I thought Counting Down to You was fantastic. I’ve been struggling to settle to reading a book recently but Emily Stone captivated me completely. She transported me into a visual, romantic and convincing narrative that gave me the most wonderful read. Just brilliant!

My Thoughts:
I went into this with low expectations after the last two Emily Stone books were misses for me. Let me tell you that this was just what I needed and grew on me more and more as I read.
Of course, as usual for Emily Stone, we're dealing with characters that have suffered loss and are trying to move forward. I liked how Ali's friend Robyn had left one last Christmas countdown as a way to say goodbye. Each challenge was meaningful to their friendship but still fun or necessary. The way the final challenges brought things full circle was beautiful. I did guess the plot twist in this, but it was exciting to be right and to see that end up drawing the love interests closer together in the end.
Leo was the true star of this romance. He stepped up whenever Ali needed him, and I was falling for him right alongside her. Their connection was very palpable. I understood the 3rd act breakup, even though I wanted it to be avoided. The way things were resolved was really satisfying and sweet.
The found family dynamic was also appreciated. I thought I'd dislike Lucie, but she turned out to be a great friend who just was very career focused. And Burgers was a great addition to the story. He helped Ali see some things in a different light and provided clarity in her career that was sorely needed.
I'm glad that I can say Emily Stone is still an author I can count on to deliver emotion and romance in time for the holidays. I'll be waiting for what she comes up with next!

Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine | Dell for the eARC.

A lovely story about moving on, without losing the ones we love.

Ali is dealing with the loss of her best friend Robyn. They would also do advent calendars for each other for the holidays and Robyn left Ali one more to complete after her passing. A little bucket list to keep living life, if you will.

Ali, at a crossroads with her personal and professional life, seizes the advent calendar with both hands to complete all the items left by Robyn. This is the last thing she left for Ali after all. For the first task, Ali is to travel to the the French alps. This sets off a chain of events that push Ali into finally moving on and taking control of her life.

With the advent calendar and snowy setting. "Counting Down To You" definitely put me in the holiday mood. The setting was perfect and I wanted to learn to ski ASAP! While this is not a light story by any means, I felt the care and gravity of grief in the pages of this story.

This story is heavy on what it means to be a friend and what it means to let go. What is left for Ali once Robyn is gone? Through the tasks assigned in the advent calendar, Robyn designs a beautiful plan for Ali to finally let her go. There are many ups and downs, but with a little holiday magic, Ali is able to craft her ideal happy ending.

This was a book full of hope and magic. The invisible strings that truly connect around us is such a cool thing to see play out. I enjoy Emily Stone's cozy stories and ""Counting Down To You" is no exception. The perfect holiday story for you, no matter where you are in life, there is a little bit of Robyn for us all.

I would like to extend gratitude to Dell, Emily Stone and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital ARC for review purposes.

3.5 stars

Ali and her best friend Robyn have always made each other advent calendars with challenges in them. Until this year. This year Robyn is gone because she was waiting for a heart transplant that never came. Robyn prepared for this. She made Ali one last advent calendar full of challenges to help her grieve and move past her death.

These challenges lead Ali to France, and, to a guy named Leo.

These challenges lead premise of this book is *chef’s kiss*. I was immediately invested. I found the connection between Ali and Leo to be a bit clunky at first and I think that was by design but as the story went on it seemed to me like they took quite a while to really connect in a genuine way. Their relationship was a slow burn for me and I wish it had gotten warm much faster than it did.

I would have liked more exploration of the relationship between Ali and her brother. I felt like there was more to unpack there.

Overall, a lovely Christmas read, perfectly festive with a great ending.

Thank you to Ballantine/Dell for an advanced reader copy of Counting Down to You by Emily Stone in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Counting Down to You is a Hallmark style holiday romance and journey through grief and healing. I definitely judged this book by its adorable cover, and went in with high hopes. The story features Ali, a woman grieving the loss of her best friend. In past years the friends had exchanged Advent calendars filled with personal challenges to get them out of their comfort zones. This year Ali has to come to terms with opening her last calendar from her friend. While attempting her first challenge, Ali has a meet cute with single, handsome, Leo, which turns into a surprising fake dating situation.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this gentle wintery romance. I enjoyed the French ski lodge setting and the idea of the calendar of challenges. I also thought the author portrayed the complicated grief process well. The pacing felt a little off at times, and I found myself wishing for more depth in the romance. I also struggled with the plot twist related to Leo, which seemed predictable but I hoped I was wrong about. Although this promising holiday romance didn't quite hit the mark for me, I think it will appeal to readers looking for a heartfelt story that tackles grief and forgiveness 3/5⭐️

📚 Counting Down Until You – Emily Stone ❤️‍🩹

If there’s one author I could guarantee would break my heart, it’s Emily Stone! And once again, she’s delivered a beautiful, heartwarming heartbreaker that completely stole my heart. 🥹

This is a powerful story about friendship, grief and learning to live with loss. We follow Ali as she navigates her first Christmas without Robyn, trying to find her way through a world that feels so different without someone she loves so much.

When she heads to the Alps for work, she meets Leo, and what follows is a journey filled with emotion, unexpected connections and the possibility of finding happiness again.

I absolutely loved this book! Emily Stone captures grief so beautifully, reminding us that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting those we’ve lost. Her writing makes you feel everything, and I was completely invested in Ali’s journey from beginning to end.

Another five-star read that left me with a full heart and probably a few tears! ❤️

I adore Emily Stone’s holiday books. This one has to be my second favorite (Always, in December will always be #1), and I loved every second of it.

The grief of losing a friend is so rarely talked about, and this book showing Ali’s mourning journey so well. It made me tear up, laugh, and had the sweetest romance. Fake dating is the supreme romance troupe! All the side characters also stole the show for me, and now I want to go to Paris again and learn how to ski.

I loved the list at the end of the book too! Thank you to NetGalley and Dell for an arc.

A NEW book to add to my Christmas reading tradition every year! Oh my, this one hit a little closer to home after losing my dear friend this year. There were moments that really tugged at my heart, but it was also such a beautiful reminder that the people we love are never truly gone. I can carry her with me, remember her, and feel her presence throughout the Christmas season. A touching, heartfelt story that will stay with me. ❤️

Do you enjoy romances with fake dating, ski lessons, elaborate advent calendars, complicated family dynamics, life after loss, karaoke duets, and winter hikes? Then don’t skip this one. It gave me The Last Holiday vibes, but in book form, with all the cozy, heartwarming energy.

Ali is reeling from the loss of her best friend during a season that meant everything to them. When her coworker and boss help arrange a month long sabbatical, she finds herself at a ski resort in the French Alps. What follows is a journey of healing and self discovery shaped by advent calendar challenges and a few uncorrected assumptions.

This is a festive winter romance with charming side characters, a dreamy setting, and a thoughtful look at rebuilding after loss. I loved the unexpected adventures and the romance that grows from a chaotic first meeting into something genuinely tender.

The third act leans on miscommunication, which was a bit frustrating at times, though the emotions behind the conflict felt understandable given the complicated circumstances.

Overall, it’s a warm, hopeful story about finding love and moving forward through grief, both within yourself and with others.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
