Bookmobile Cat Mystery #14

Murder on Thin Ice

Rate this book
Sleuthing is past due in the fourteenth installment of the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series by national bestselling author Laurie Cass.

A small-town bookmobile librarian and her rescue cat refuse to go by the book when an elderly patron’s body is found at the bottom of a small lake.

It’s winter in northwest lower Michigan, which means librarian Minnie Niswander and her cat, Eddie, are staying cozy in the bookmobile. But not everything is as it should be.

When an elderly housebound patron, Gerald Arnold, fails to answer his door, Minnie knows something is wrong. Her fears are confirmed when the police discover Gerald’s body beneath the surface of a small frozen lake.

Minnie knows that the kind and cautious Gerald would never have been so careless as to fall through the ice, and she suspects foul play. But law enforcement rules the old man’s death an accident, and Minnie knows she will have to take the investigation into her own hands.

As she and Eddie dig deeper, Minnie is troubled to learn that Gerald—and many of her friends—had been suspects in a decades-old cold case. Were the two murders connected? If so, it looks like justice is long overdue.

This is book 14 in the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series but the first that I have read. I liked it.

Minnie Niswander is a librarian who takes the bookmobile to various schools and meeting places with her cat, Eddie, going along as an added attraction. When someone she knows well dies the police decide it is an accident. Minnie does not agree and sets out to solve the case herself. Lots of things happen as a result, including a very stressful escape from near death which actually goes a lot further than the average cosy!

Cosiness is restored when we have to accept a main character who catches murderers but cannot concentrate long enough to stir a pot of soup. I was happy when she decided she was never going to add cooking to her list of talents. I enjoyed all of the characters in this story and found it to be a speedy and enjoyable read. Four stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I'm having a hard time rating Murder on Thin Ice by Laurie Cass because the book was so good! I finished it really fast and I honestly enjoyed it so much but this is supposed to be a cozy mystery. I felt like the cozy part just got tossed out the window at the end. The book follows Minnie after she finds out a bookmobile patron was found dead after falling inside a frozen lake. Minnie is stunned because this man is super cautious and there is just no way it could have happened to him. She decides to go against police advice and investigates the crime. In the story we get to spend time with all the residents of Chilson, MI who are all charming and wonderful. We also get to spend time in what sounds like a winter wonderland. I loved the whole book up until I didn't like that the coziness was gone. Unfortunately due to that, I will have to give it 4 stars but know that 95% of the book is 5 stars! I would 100% recommend it but know what you are getting into.

Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Laurie Cass for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I received this book courtesy of NetGalley for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

Overview: Minnie has just returned from her honeymoon in London. On the first day back in the bookmobile library, Minnie and Julie come across a horrible scene. Gerald Arnhurst has seemingly had an ice fishing accident. Oddly enough, Gerald was seriously safety conscious. How did he fall through the ice? And what is his connection to the murder of a young woman in the '90's? Can Minnie convince Rafe to have a personal strategic plan? Let's find out.

Dislikes: This whole town seemed to want to ignore the Great Airport Controversy, due to the fact of how it tore the town apart. Yet, that is the history people need to know. How do you prevent the same mistakes being repeated, if no one knows what those mistakes were?

Cheryl was a problem. She had no boundaries and that got her killed.

I'm a plotter in life. Yet, there is no way that I'm on Minnie's level. Yes, I have journals, lists, and plans, for my month. I don't have a personal strategic plan to avoid getting into a rut. Minnie needs to let go of some of her control. What is she going to do when life throws her a damaging curveball?

Likes: Aunt Francis has the patience of a saint. I'd have to teach Minnie to cook with a rubber band gun. If she goes off into la-la land, then you pop her with a rubber band. Sooner or later she will learn.

Rafe does manage to control Minnie's worse impulses.

Minnie was able to cover Graydon's post in his absence.

Conclusion: This book was okay. If you like cozy mysteries, or Minnie's crew, then this book is for you. Enjoy the read.

Bundle up, book lovers—this cozy mystery delivers a delightfully frosty trip back to Chilson, Michigan! In Murder on Thin Ice, Laurie Cass reunites readers with bookmobile librarian Minnie Niswander and her clever cat sidekick, Eddie, as they brave the cold to visit homebound residents. Cass’s conversational style, vivid settings, natural dialogue, and lighthearted humor make the story welcoming and easy to enjoy. Minnie remains kind, persistent, and deeply connected to her community, returning from her London honeymoon happily married to Rafe, while Eddie is still far too smart for his own good. The quirky townspeople and lively community spirit add even more charm. When elderly patron Gerald Arnold dies, Minnie refuses to believe it was an accident. Her investigation uncovers a cold case, and the two mysteries soon intertwine, adding welcome depth and intrigue as she faces frigid temperatures in pursuit of the truth. The fourteenth installment in the Bookmobile Cat Mysteries, Murder on Thin Ice also works well as a standalone. Grab a warm drink and settle in—this charming, chilly visit to Chilson is a cozy treat from beginning to end!

I gotta admit it took me a bit to recall characters at first since I also need to admit I haven’t read in this series since Book 2, but it’s nice to be able to report that the author does a great job of not spoiling any of the previous mysteries by naming killers or anything. Obviously I learned that Minnie was now married to her longtime best friend Rafe. Those two are so cute, and they crack me up. And speaking of cracking me up, Julia did just that too. She was a hoot! Eddie’s the same as I remembered reading about, basically lovable when it suits him lol. And he’s a great sounding board for when Minnie was thinking out loud.

When one of the bookmobile’s patrons was discovered dead by Minnie and Julia, Minnie went back into sleuth mode and went down a rabbit hole of info where she learned about a controversy back in 1990. She started wondering if a murder back then was connected to Gerald’s present death and found out when she faced off with a killer. Minnie survived, just barely and lived to sleuth another day along with being cat mom to Eddie and wife to Rafe. What a crazy survival tale!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Crooked Lane via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

Can I just say how much I adore this series? Every book is a delight, the characters are among my favourite in cozy mystery, and I would read anything the author wrote. It genuinely made my week when I was chosen for an arc, I read the book immediately and had to keep myself under wraps until closer to the publishing date to review.

Now I could wax poetic about my love for this series for the entire review, but you won’t get anything constructive from that. Suffice to say the mystery is still hitting strong, and Minnie, the main character, is memorable and fun to read about. If you love cat cozy mystery, then Eddie is one of the strongest supporting sleuths you will find. Minnie notices things, and with her job at the library and in the book mobile, is able to hunt down clues and find the evidence to any whodunnit.

If you’re looking for a great new series to start and feel like a commitment, then I’d highly recommend this one. Five stars!

I loved this fabulous, fast-paced addition to one of my favorite series! Minnie and her husband, Rafe, recently returned from their postponed honeymoon. Minnie has the best job in the world as the assistant director and the bookmobile librarian at Chilson Library. Eddie, Minnie’s cat and the lovable bookmobile cat, was eager to see his fans. It was a cold, February day when Minnie, Eddie, and her part-time helper, Julia, stopped to see one of their favorite home-delivery bookmobile patrons.

For the first time ever, Gerald didn’t greet them at the door. They used his hidden door key to see if he was okay. Gerald couldn’t drive because of his waning vision, and rarely left the house. His bright red coat was missing, so they went outdoors. Minnie saw the ice fishing shack on the lake and went inside. He wasn’t in the shack, but his hat and fishing rod were. Sadly, his body was recovered several hours later and his death was ruled and accident.

People who knew him doubted it. Gerald prepared for every eventuality, and didn’t take a step unless it was pre-planned. Minnie decided to looked into his death, especially after she heard about the GAC – Great Airport Controversy – and murder of a young woman who had worked for Gerald in 1990.

Gerald was the manager of the local airport back then. Chilson was small, and local businesses struggled. Some locals wanted the airport expanded to have the capacity for commercial airline traffic. Chilson became divided between the people who were for the expansion, and those who wanted to maintain the quality of small-town living. People were forced into taking a side, and the pro-airport people tried to prevail. Cheryl, a recent high school graduate, was pro-airport and lied to sway people’s decision. Cheryl was a flirt, looking for a man with a high earning potential. She worked at several part-time jobs, including at the airport. Cheryl was murdered, and her death had never been solved. Suspects included Rafe’s father, her late Uncle Everett, and Gerald. Of the suspects, all except Gerald and Everett could have been Gerald’s killer.

Gerald quit his management job, and worked as an accountant from the home he bought outside of town. The airport expansion never happened. Many who had been active in the GAC suspected Gerald’s death was related to the GAC or Cheryl’s murder.

Whether I need a laugh, a heartwarming moment, or a mystery, this series satisfies it. Minnie and Eddie are my favorites. Most of the time, Minnie is the most optimistic, cheerful person on the cozy mystery shelves! Eddie is a CAT among cats. Most of the characters are engaging, and defined well through conversations and actions.

I enjoyed the daily adventures, including Aunt Frances’s attempts to teach Minnie how to cook. She was the acting library director while her boss was out of town, and dealt with their new website fiasco.

Most people wouldn’t talk about the GAC. Gerald had no internet presence, and most older town records were boxed away. Minnie pursued the search as she did everything else – with energy, curiosity, and satisfaction for each item she learned.

Plot twists escalated the pace. I was surprised to see who really killed Cheryl and Gerald, and why. The end was more than satisfactory, and I can’t wait to read the next in series! I highly recommend this delightfully cozy mystery and its series!

Many thanks to the publisher, Crooked Lane, who provided a pre-publication copy through NetGalley. This is my honest review.

This is Laurie Cass’s fourteenth installment in her Bookmobile Cat Mystery series. It’s Wintertime in the small town of Chilson, Michigan, and bookmobile librarian Minnie Niswander, bookmobile kitty Eddie, and her part-time helper Julia were visiting one of their favorite elderly homebound bookmobile patrons, Gerald Arnold. Minnie became concerned when Gerald failed to answer his door. Minnie’s worst fears came true when police recovered Gerald's body from under the ice of a small frozen lake. Several hours later, police ended up ruling Gerald’s death an accident; they believed that Gerald must have fallen into the ice by accident while ice fishing.

Minnie refuses to believe it, and as she begins to dig deeper, Minnie starts to learn new things about the town and the people in it–clues that bring her closer to the truth.

This book was truly a fun, cozy read. It was fun trying to guess who the killer was, and the ending kept me on the edge of my seat! I also loved Eddie the cat’s constant “Mrrs!” when Minnie would have conversations with him, or when he was protesting something he didn’t want to do. Anytime Eddie made an appearance, it instantly brought a smile to my face. I also couldn’t help but laugh during Minnie’s visits to her Aunt Frances, especially when learning how terrible a cook Minnie is. I thoroughly enjoyed the chilly, snowy Michigan small-town vibes and the laughs I had throughout the book.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, comforting winter mystery. It is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a lighthearted whodunit featuring a sassy rescue cat, or longtime fans of the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series who love Minnie, her friends, and the residents of Chilson, Michigan.

Thank you, Laurie Cass, and Crooked Lane Books, for providing this eARC for review via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Here’s the thing about Minnie Niswander: she is DEEPLY, unapologetically me. The way her brain wanders off mid-crisis, the way she finds herself caring about seventeen different things when she’s supposed to be focused on just one. I feel seen in a way that should probably concern both of us. Fourteen books in, Laurie Cass still writes Minnie like someone she genuinely loves, and it shows on every single page.

The surrounding life in this book is what kept me completely hooked. Aunt Frances attempting to teach Minnie to cook is one of the most CHAOTICALLY DELIGHTFUL reading experiences I’ve had this year. Disasters in the kitchen have never been this funny or this oddly moving. Then there’s the nickname game Eddie’s humans are playing with each other, trying on pet names the way you try on ridiculous hats in a shop, sweet, funny, and somehow deeply romantic without trying too hard. The bookmobile scenes, the library drama, Eddie’s absolute refusal to behave: all of it is warm and lived-in and wonderful.

The mystery, though, that’s where I have to be honest. The central case leans heavily on decades of backstory and a web of connections that felt more complicated than compelling. I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t riveted either. The resolution was tidy, which I appreciated, but getting there felt more like wading through archives than chasing a killer. When a book’s actual mystery is the LEAST interesting thing in it, that’s both a compliment to the writing and a gentle nudge to the plotting. Still, Minnie, Eddie, and Chilson, Michigan will always get four stars from me.

Would I recommend it?
If you’ve been following Minnie and Eddie from the beginning, Murder on Thin Ice is the cozy, heart-full installment that reminds you exactly why you started. The mystery runs a little cold (pun intended), the plotting leans heavy on history and tangled connections that don’t quite ignite. But the warmth of this world more than makes up for it. Add this to your TBR, especially if you need a book that feels like a weighted blanket in novel form.

I read the first several books in this series several years ago and enjoyed them, so I was happy to see this book available on Netgally so I could catch up with Minnie, Eddie, the bookmobile and all friends and family. I was satisfied to see Minnie happily married to Rafe and enjoying her life. This adventure has Minnie with Julia and Eddie out in the winter cold, visiting students, shut ins, and the elderly during this snowy February. When she comes to visit one of her favorite older gentlemen, Gerald Arnhold, he is not waiting for them, which leaves Minnie a little worried, when a search discovers that Gerald has slipped into the water from his ice fishing hut, Minnie is heartbroken but also suspicious, Gerald was the most thorough, plan ahead person she knows, she can't believe he would have fallen through the hole. When Minnie starts looking into Herald's death, she discovers a cold case from 35 years ago that might provide some answers, but no one wants to talk about it, not neighbors, not friends, not her in-laws or her Aunt Fran. Can Minnie find answers when no one wants to talk? Come along for an interesting part of the town's history. I will say that this story did run a bit longer than was needed, and Minnie still takes some unnecessary risks. Overall, though, this was an enjoyable story, and I enjoyed catching up. First, I would like to thank NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this book.

This is the first book I have read in this series by Laurie Cass and I loved it! It was the perfect blend of cozy and mystery and I am definitely going to go back and read the series starting with the first book.

If you know me, you know that I love cats and cozy mysteries, so I was excited to jump in to this series with this one. The premise of a series that follows the mysterious adventures, and misadventures, of Eddie the cat, and Millie his bookmobile driver/librarian, sounded like good old fashioned fun.

The overall tone of the story was lighthearted, even though there were a few dramatic moments and plenty of opportunities for guessing "who done it", and a reveal that I was not totally expecting. The snowy setting had me wanting to go back and binge all 13 of the previous books.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, and you might be a cat person, I would absolutely recommend curling up with a comfy blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and this little mystery for the perfect leisurely read on a crisp winter day.

Thank you Crooked Lane Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley! All opinions are my own.

I've been trying out different cozy mysteries in an effort to find a series to carry me through the long winter ahead. Murder on Thin Ice is book fourteen in A Bookmobile Cat Mystery. And it just may fit the bill.

Librarian Minnie and her cat, Eddie, make connections in their small town, solving mysteries along the way. In this particular installment, Minnie happens upon one of her bookmobile customers who has fallen through the lake ice. It has been deemed an accident. Yet Minnie doesn't think that is the case so she begins a hunt to find out the truth. True to cozy mysteries, there are other fun additions to the storyline. In this, there is a second interwoven case as well as Minnie learning how to cook and find a gift for her new husband. I found the characters very relatable and enjoyable. And the snowy town setting in Michigan is comforting to me as a Minnesotan. I can see myself picking up more books from this series during the Winter when I just want a low-stress simple story I can get lost in.

When Minnie Niswander stops to check up on patron Gerald Arnold and he doesn't answer the door she knows that something isn't right. With one call to police she learns that her senses were correct, Gerald is discovered beneath the surface of the frozen lake. Minnie suspects foul play, but the police don't agree...which means Minnie just landed her next case to solve!

Murder on Thin Ice is a captivating and heartfelt cozy mystery that kept me on my toes the whole way through! Ms. Niswander and her side kick have quite the task in front of them, but as we have learned in previous installments, there isn't much that they can't accomplish. Minnie sets on out a journey to find the truth and winds up more than she bargained for, she has two murders on her hands to solve, and hopefully she's on the right track to find the killer!

I really enjoyed this journey between the pages, it was a suspenseful, adventurous, and good for the heart! Highly recommend!

I love spending time in Chilson with my favorite bookmobile cat and his human librarian. Minnie and Julia stop to drop off books with Gerald, an elderly patron, but instead find him dead in his frozen over lake. The police consider it a tragic accident however Minnie doesn't think so. She does her thing to find the truth about what happened to Gerald and possibly what happened to a young woman 30 years ago.
As someone who loves to bake and cook I found myself both laughing and rolling my eyes at Minnie's attempts to cook. I agree with Aunt Frances in wondering how is she 35 and know so little about cooking. I love her relationship with Frances and of course Rafe. They make such a cute couple. We didn't see much of Ash and Hal this book since they didn't think poor Gerald had been murdered. Maybe in the future they will take Minnie more seriously.

I enjoyed this book! Now I have to read the entire series from the beginning. Millie and her bookmobile crew make a home visit to a local man named Gerald who always has cookies, and coffee for the ladies, and treats for Eddie. Not long after their visit they find that he is not in his home and they notice he may be out ice fishing on the lake behind his house. They find that Gerald has fallen through the ice and drown. Millie and friends know that it is out of character for Gerald (ever so cautious about everything) to have an accident such as this. She begins to ask questions and finds that his death may be related to a woman's murder many years ago. Millie gets dangerously close to the truth and has to use her survival skills to solve the case. In the meantime, she is dealing with an online crisis at the Library. The scene is set in upper Lower Michigan. I am originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so reading this story made me feel right at home.

Murder on Thin Ice is the 14th installment in Laurie Cass's Bookmobile Cat Mystery series. Newlywed Minnie Niswander suspects foul play when the body of one of her housebound library patrons is found trapped underneath the ice of a frozen lake, despite the police declaring it an accidental drowning.

What initially drew me to this series is the bookmobile itself serving as the catalyst for Minnie and Eddie's murder investigations. I have fond memories of visiting the local bookmobile as a child and can only hope those librarians didn't encounter the same wild situations Minnie and Eddie do!

While the story felt a bit long in places and Minnie took some unnecessary risks, I still found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. On top of the main mystery, Minnie has to navigate the early days of her marriage while dealing with an in-law who becomes a suspect in a cold case that might just have a bearing on the present-day investigation.

Another really great book in the Bookmobile Cat series! This story takes us to Tonedegana County, Michigan in what is proving to be another chilly and snowy March. Minnie Niswander, librarian, keeper of the bookmobile, wife, niece, amateur sleuth, and human owned by the dynamic feline, Eddie, is minding her own business and not looking for any trouble and still somehow finds herself with yet another murder to solve ... and another mystery decades old that needs looking into as well. Author Laurie Cass brings a wonderfully real cast of characters, many her readers have come to know well over the previous 13 books, and some we are introduced to with this installment. The story is strong, has twists and turns and some red herrings to keep you guessing and just enough suspense to bring you to the edge of your seat. An excellent read all around! I'm already looking forward to seeing where the next book takes Minnie....and Eddie, too, of course! 🐈

I just finished Murder on Thin Ice by Laurie Cass, my first book in the Bookmobile Cat series, and it definitely won't be my last! It was such a fun, cozy mystery that was easy to get into from the very first chapter. Eddie the cat completely stole the show with all of his attitude, and I loved following Millie as she tackled the mystery. She was funny, determined, and I really enjoyed the relationship she shared with her husband.
I honestly didn't see the ending coming or guess who the culprit was, which made the reveal even better! And one little takeaway from this book—don't send me to Michigan in February... way too much snow and ice! I'm excited to dive into the rest of this series and spend more time with Millie and Eddie

If you are looking for a Winter themed mystery without a holiday this one has got you covered. On one of their usual book moblie runs, Minnie and her cat, Eddie, find the house empty of an elderly patron. Soon the police find his body in the lake and rule it an accident. But Minnie doesn't believe that the cautious Gerald would have fallen through the ice. So, of course, Minnie is determined to investigate on her own. Will Minnie find herself on thin ice?

An enjoyable mystery that shows the beauty of Winter but also its danger. It is always fun to visit with Minnie, Eddie and the other quirky but (mostly) lovable characters in this series. It hasn't grown stale yet.

I’ve been reading this series ever since the first book came out so I was happy to read Minnie and Eddie’s latest adventure. Just back from her honeymoon with Rafe, Minnie is doing her rounds with the bookmobile when one of her regulars, an elderly, housebound man who never misses the bookmobile is nowhere to be found and there’s a fishing shack with open ice in it behind his house. The police rule the death accidental but Minnie doesn’t believe it is.

Overall I enjoyed the story, especially Minnie’s attempts at cooking. However, I felt that her confrontation with the killer was a bit over the top.

Minnie, the librarian, and Eddie, the bookmobile cat, are two of my favorite characters. In this outing, they discover a favorite bookmobile patron missing from his house and find signs he had drowned inside a hole in his ice fish shack. Minnie, always searching for justice, realizes his death is tied to a controversy that divided their small town back in 1990. Honestly though, I didn't connect at all to the mystery, instead I just really enjoyed being back in Minnie's mind and especially her disasterous attempts at learning to cook. > This was my first time reading a book in this series. It took me a few chapters to get fully into it, as I was catching up on the characters and their backstories. Once I settled in, though, I really enjoyed the story. The plot was engaging and kept me guessing, with plenty of potential suspects and twists that made it hard to predict how things would unfold. I'd definitely recommend it to friends looking for a solid, enjoyable cozy mystery.

I really wanted to love this book. This is a favorite series of mine, but this book really fell short to me.

Minnie was on an entirely new level of annoying. Rafe doesn't really seem to care that he has a wife...and even as a cat person myself, the amount of talking Minnie does to Eddie in this book is ridiculous.

I found my mind wandering more than once.....and I think maybe I had an earlier review copy, as there were a lot of skipping around to places with no mention of a scene change.

Love this series. Minnie is the assistant librarian in upper Michigan. Her boss has to go a away for a short time so Minnie is in charge. She also drives the bookmobile. They find one of their patrons deceased and the police state it was an accident but she thinks it is murder. Then that starts her investigation and a group of suspects. The story was very well written and brought you to many different conclusions. The ending was a little surprising and we'll written. Let's hope for more books in this series.

There’s a bookmobile, a fur baby, and a murder in my home state to solve. I figured I’d be stuck like glue! to this story! While I was to a degree, I also feel like I should start at square one to learn who’s who and see how those relationships developed. Otherwise, I enjoyed the mystery and got a kick out of Minnie’s personality.

A modern day murder leads to an old town cold case that no one wants to discuss. I love the Bookmobile series. Minnie and her cast of volunteers, neighbors, and family (especially the lovely Eddie the cat) are so enjoyable to follow.

I really enjoyed the storyline, and there were a lot of suspects to keep the reader guessing and engaged. A fun mystery and read.

This is the latest in the bookmobile series. Minnie is temporarily running the library with her boss out of town. While she dealing with the library board and a hacked website a murder occurs. In digging into the murder, she discovers a connection to something that happened in 1991.

I really enjoy this series. Minnie is great and I love her cat Eddie. He steals the book. I thought the mystery was great. It kept ne guessing right to the end.

A book Mobile, a cat and a cold case roll up to a patron’s house and the mystery begins when he doesn’t answer the door. Soon the police find the man’s body and Minnie knows it’s foul play, even if the police have declared it an accident. Can the duo figure out what happened and who did Gerald in, or are their nine lives all used up?

Minnie and Eddie are the perfect sleuthing duo. A great mystery each and every time.

Another great installment in the bookmobile cat series. Minnie keeps busy while sleuthing, dealing with problems at the library, trying to learn to cook, and settling into married life. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read the book and give my opinion. It’s always fun to visit Chilson and spend some time with Minnie and Eddie.

Overall, good book. Not my favorite but wasn't the worst. I did love the aspect of the cat throughout the story. If you love cozy cat mysteries than this book is for you! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
