Quiet Angel

Rate this book
We all have that someone we can’t forget, the summer it all began, and the sleepless nights wondering what went wrong.

For Gage Montgomery, that someone is Layla Baxter. When he was 18, he took one look at the chocolate-haired bookworm with porcelain skin and knew his life would never be the same. But it all came crashing down when Layla suddenly and mysteriously disappeared from St. Simons Island -- leaving him with nothing but her angel wing pendent around his neck. For 12 long years, Gage couldn’t shake what happened, if he’s the one to blame, wondering where Layla might be. When their paths finally cross, he’s determined to get the answers he’s spent his life searching for -- and to get the girl, too. Quiet Angel is a story of hope, survival, and lost love made new again.

“I missed you, too, but you were never far.” Gage touched his shirt with the wings inside. “You were always there.”

3.5 stars!!

Quiet Angel was a cute, compelling romance that was right up my alley. It was a really sweet read of two individuals traveling at a crossroads and who meet up after a mere decade time-lapse to settle unfinished business. Or should I say feelings? Answers? And or love?

Gage and Layla were one of my more favorite bittersweet couples as I got to see their romance bloom from childhood, and how despite lost time, how it transpired 12 years into adulthood.

I really enjoyed Prescott Lane’s writing style as I got to journey with these two protagonists on their tumultuous expedition that we call life and witness Gage's awesomeness and devotedness; as well as, to discover the mystery that is Layla.

I LOVED this standalone and I really recommend it to all you hopeless romantics!

4.5 “Angel” Stars!
A Delightfully Brilliant Read that Totally Brought the “Feels”.

The Review:
Absolutely amazing! Quiet Angel is a sweet, beautifully told story of about young love, broken hearts, second chances, entwined destinies... and life in all its unpredictable entanglements. Add in a wonderful romance with two amazing main characters and a cast of incredible sub-characters and you have a “stay up all night” read that you just can’t put down. Told in third person narrative with a two part segment stemming over the main characters first meeting as teenagers and then reconnecting twelve years later, this fantastic story brought the angsts and the romance.

The Story...
Sixteen year old Layla, running from pain and betrayal, escapes to her estranged grandmother's house for a summer of uncertainty in the hopes of healing. She never thought she’d meet the one person who could stand the test of time... literally. After the best summer of her life, she finds herself running once again and it would be twelve long years before her destiny would come full circle.

Gage’s life had been mapped out for him since birth. He’d never seen the uncertainty of it all until he meets the one person who suddenly completed him in every way. After the most amazing summer he’s never had, he finds himself left with a broken heart and a tangible reminder that it wasn’t all just a dream. Twelve years later, he comes face to face with his past and the one girl who could fill the lonely void he’s been dealing with since he was eighteen.

Thoughts...
Layla was a complicated character. She had so much betrayal surrounding her that she didn’t trust blindly and she erected walls that kept her from living free. I enjoyed her character and all her layers and I understood her reluctance for the good things in her life. However, there were times when I thought she was too resistant and not understanding enough. Gage goes out of his way to show her how much he loves her at every possible turn and there were times when she threw that love aside and dangled her righteousness around to shield herself from the happiness he was trying to give her.

But after thinking about her character, I understood her and her motives. She was very independent, which stemmed from years of being alone in the world. I think she failed to see just how true and heartbreakingly open Gage was because it wasn’t something she could recognize. She’d never truly had it before. And sometimes she unknowingly pushed and tested him in order to protect herself. But I loved that we saw her growth at the end of the book. The author does a phenomenal job giving us that complexity and making us really think and feel for her character. All in all, Layla was a lovely, likable character with a light inside her that shined.

I absolutely loved Gage. He was so sweet, loving and adorable. The things he did to give Layla peace of mind were swoon-worthy. He romanced her, was patient with her (for the most part) and he was completely wrapped up in her. The only complaint I had about his character were the frequent complaints about waiting for sex. It seemed to be a running theme for him and his throwaway comments about how he wasn’t getting any did start to get repetitive but the man was amazing. Even after all the heartbreak and uncertainty Layla put him through, he powered through it and gave her what she needed. He was VERY well written.

The Wrap Up:
I really enjoyed this read and I loved the epilogue at the end that wrapped everything up nicely. This authors gives us a creative, enticing story and I loved the minor slant towards “spiritual beings”. The cast of characters were fun and delightful, throwing in laugh out loud moments beside the angsts. I stayed up all night reading it for a reason. It was just that good.

This book sort of snuck up on me. I had a little bit of a hard time connecting to the story at first; I wasn’t sure what to make of Layla – she was very hot and cold. She came off as completely innocent, almost prudish and frankly, kind of a tease. But somewhere around the halfway point, I found myself smiling cheesily at my Kindle while cheering for Gage and Layla.

Quiet Angel is heartwarming second chance romance. Layla disappeared on Gage without an explanation after a whirlwind teenage love affair. Twelve years later they re-connect during a chance encounter at an airport. Their flame instantly re-ignites and Gage makes it his mission to keep Layla around forever.

There are demons to conquer along the way – the reason Layla disappeared wasn’t a pretty one and she lived through some pretty gritty events. And for a book that overall felt like a light read, some pretty intense issues are dealt with along the way. In the end, I sort of loved Layla and was proud of the growth and strength she gained over the course of the book.

Gage is perfection. Wealthy and powerful, he’s the guy calling the shots and he was relentless in his pursuit of Layla. The steaminess kept ratcheting up as the book went along. In the beginning I thought the sex scenes would be tame, but there were one or two as the book went along that left me a little squirmy in my seat. Prescott Lane was full of surprises! I felt like Gage could have used a little more bite, but let’s be real – I still wouldn’t kick that guy out of bed.

One of my favorite things about this story was the relationships Layla formed with Gage’s family. There’s some lighthearted humor thrown into those relationships, and Layla’s best friend Poppy is a trip. While this story isn’t necessarily breaking any new ground, it was definitely a sweet, romantic read. ~ Shelly, 4 stars

4 "Angels Soar Above it All" Stars! Lovers of sweet, second chance romances will not want to miss Quiet Angel. Interestingly, while the romance is pure and beautiful, it is worth noting that this book, while not overly descriptive, does touch upon some pretty sordid, domestic abuse issues. Consequently, if this is a trigger for you, please be forewarned. The ultimate message though is one of inspiration and hope, tinged with a drop of mysticism surrounding the protective powers of angels, and therefore entirely uplifting and heartwarming in the end.

The summer before starting college, Gage Montgomery's life changed forever. Although it started quite innocently enough, with his family spending the summer on St. Simons Island, a tiny island just off the coast of Atlanta Georgia, an event that he had repeated for nearly every summer in memory, it all changed when Layla appeared. Different from the typical preppy, rich crowd, who frequently made the island there summer get-away, Gage noticed Layla immediately. Gage, in turn, gained Layla's attention when he came to her rescue, a protective instinct he would be bound to repeat numerous times in the future.

Gage and Layla spent most of that lazy summer together. They were inseparable in their friendship as they carried on their days enjoying each other's mutual company. And though they tried to resist their mutual chemistry, they eventually capitulated to their mutual desires.

As Gage awakened from that perfect night, however, to his vast shock and never ending regret, Layla was gone. Having vanished without a trace, Gage went through the steps of moving on. No matter how many countless women warmed his bed in the many lonely years that came and went thereafter, however, he never could forget his "angel". So he committed himself to his work, became a pilot, like he had always dreamed, and eventually took over his father's airline, Southern Wings.

Then twelve years later, Southern Wings reunited them. Though they were all grown up now, and each had their separate established lives, their mutual attraction remained. But can there be a hope for a second chance with such an auspicious start? Moreover, what dark, deep secrets could possibly have been the impetus for such a drastic, and abrupt departure?

Beautifully written, Layla's story is sure to cause a tear or two or, at the very least, an overt visceral reaction at how unfair life can be at times. Perhaps my favorite character though is Gage. A true southern gentleman, with a protective nature, and hard work ethic, he is exactly the type of hero that you would anticipate crowds of women swooning over. Moreover, the way Prescott Lane ties it all together, both the second chance romance and the unraveling of the life-changing, dark past was angelically done. In the end, this is a romance that will leave you with copious amounts of hope that even the worst circumstances can be overcome underneath the protective shroud of love.

Review to post on March 6,2015 www.afterdarkbooklovers.com

Before I being my review, I finished reading this book on February 27, 2015 and on February 28, 2015, I read a post from Prescott that someone has pirated this book on IBooks. To the idiot who did this, shame on you! Ms. Lane has worked hard to bring us a beautiful story and then some moron who obviously cannot write their own story had to steal hers. Lately, this has been becoming a theme with regards to pirating and that is not cool. Ok enough of my rant on to my review.

The last time I read any of Prescott’s work was when I was still freshly new to After Dark wherein I read Perfectly Broken. Having read that book (and if you haven’t read it, I suggest you put it in your TBR), I knew I had to get ready for some crying and some good wine.

This Contemporary Romance novel is about second chance love. Layla and Gage meet 12 years ago while she was 16 and he 18 and on his way to the Naval Ccademy. Layla is visiting her grandmother over the Summer when a bunch of teenage boys were trying to put the moves on her, Gage intercedes and becomes her knight in shining armor. Gage and Layla fall in love that Summer, but circumstances has Layla leaving Gage after their first night of passion.

Moving 12 years later, who knew Layla would be running into none other than Gage at an airport in Houston. Get this, he’s the owner of the airline that Layla needs to get on and out of Houston. Their brief conversation on the plane makes you know that there is still love between these two. After a series of events, Gage and Layla end up trying to give their relationship another go, of course, Gage finally finds out why Layla left him all those years ago. Reading what happened to Layla was so sad. OMG how I hated her mother. Oh Gage, I adored him, yet I wanted to throat punch him at times. I understood his reasons in trying to protect Layla, but how he went about it, always ended him getting a kick in the pants. His heart was in the right place, I get it, but if you’re trying to rekindle your relationship, communication is key.

The story did not lag, it had a lot of heartwarming moments and well as some sad moments. I adored Layla’s friend Poppy. Poppy is a lot to take on, but I loved her no filter and said what was on her mind. Some people may not like that in a friend, I don’t mind that at all.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will continue to read Ms. Lane’s books. I will leave you with some of my favorite quotes.

This is not necessarily a quote, but Layla explaining her extent in the dating pool: In the last year alone, she’s gone from the guy who couldn’t make her orgasm, to another who needed some serious manscaping, to another who had a Call of Duty obsession.

Layla explaining to Gage her last night with him 12 years ago: ‘I knew I had to leave, but I wanted, I needed, to take those memories-your memories-with me. I needed to know that was possible, something to keep me alive, hoping for.”

What to say about ‘Quiet Angel’? Well, I’ll start by saying that I adored ‘Perfectly Broken’ by Prescott Lane, and so had high hopes for this one of hers as well. I felt so connected with her writing style that I just had to read more. But ‘Quiet Angel’ was so much more than I imagined, and just so beautifully created that I find myself at loss to describe just how much it touched me as a reader.

The characters were so relatable, and because of this, their shared heartbreak over their separation and their continued love and desire for each other, even after their time apart, felt so natural to read. I loved seeing how they had to fight for their relationship to start again, and I felt my heart ache as I saw just how broken Gage was, and how he felt the need to push Layla away to save himself from the pain of possibly losing her again. Having witnessed their Summer meeting and beautiful childhood sweetheart stage, I felt more clued in to them as a couple and couldn’t wait to see how the dynamic may have changed as they became adults.

This story raises some real issues that I felt were dealt with with real tenderness and understanding. Prescott Lane did a fantastic job at describing Layla’s emotional state as she tries to overcome her past abuse, and her mixed feelings when confronted with the information that her abuser is close to death. I really felt Layla’s strength as an individual as well as her important role in her and Gage’s relationship.

The inclusion of the ‘angel’ storyline was really beautifully portrayed. In something that could have easily been mistakenly portrayed in a cliche way, Prescott Lane instead made the storyline with Layla’s angels something that felt natural to read. I never once felt that Layla was just being fanciful, and instead began to believe in her angels the way she did. It shows the strengths of the author that she was able to make the story realistic, believable, and not overly spiritual or at all fantastical.

A beautiful novel by Prescott Lane and I can’t wait to see where she takes us next!

This was a contemporary romance. Second chance romance where the main characters met when they were 16 and 18 years old and then ran into each other 12 years later.

The summer Layla was 16 years old, she stayed at her grandmother’s. Gage vacationed with his parents at the cottage next door to Layla’s grandmother. Layla and Gage fell in love that summer, but one night Layla just disappeared and Gage never was able to locate her until he say her at the airport twelve years later.

This book did not drag. The author did a great job moving everything along. There was no doubt about how these two felt for each other even though one had a lot of insecurities. The reason Layla had to leave and how she survived that period was hard, but she took solace in a belief that an angel was protecting her.
There was a lot surrounding Laya and her “angel”. In the beginning, I loved reading how she survived all she went through because of the angel protecting her, but towards the end, I felt like it was turning into a paranormal, which it is NOT. It is a contemporary romance and I understand that the title of the book is QUIET ANGEL, but it became a bit much about the angel towards the end of the book.

Gage loves Layla. She is his world and the reader never doubts his love and that is what I loved about him and this book. When a man is in love sometimes he makes stupid choices which Gage did. There are evil people in this book; people that Layla had to deal with.

Some information I could have done without like Layla’s best friend, Poppy’s, sexual activities. Poppy was a good friend to Layla, but I am never a fan of the skanky BFF. This again is a personal preference in my stories. Sometimes I rather the heroine not have a friend at all because usually the friend’s life revolves around their sex life and drama. I like my stories to focus on the main characters.

I was given a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. After reading the blurb, I was intrigued because as I've mentioned previously I love second chance stories.

In the blurb we learn that Layla and Gage were in love when they were teenagers until she disappeared in the middle of the night. Twelve years later the reconnect after a chance encounter. Layla had a rough life but was able to overcome many obstacles and accomplish her dreams. Gage is sexy, successful, caring and determined to make Layla his.

“Marry me? Marry me so I can hold you every day?”
“Not today.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Not tomorrow, either,” she said and pulled him into a kiss.
“One day you’ll tell me ‘yes.’”

I will admit that I never read any of the author's other works and this was the first time hearing of her. So being as I've never heard of her, I thought I'd take a chance and hope that I liked the book. Boy am I glad that I did.

Prescott wove a beautiful story of hope, survival and love while touching on some difficult issues. The book flowed wonderfully and the characters were well rounded and believable. Not only did Prescott write 2 wonderful main characters but the secondary characters were as well. I hope to read Poppy and Drew's story someday. I adore Poppy's spunk and couldn't help but LOL at some of the things that came out her mouth.

I give this book 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone who loves second chance romance.

Gage Montgomery had his life all planned out. He was going to the Naval Academy in the fall and until then, he was going to enjoy his time on the beaches of St. Simons Island. Until one day when he sees a young girl sitting in the sand reading a book. Her angelic beauty immediately captures his attention and soon she also has his heart.

But Layla is hiding a painful secret and when she disappears without a trace, Gage moves on with his young life but he never forgets his angel.

Layla Baxter ran for her life. She knew that she should never tell Gage about the horrors of her real life. He deserved to chase his dreams. So she rebuilt herself starting with a new name and a new home. She never thought that she would ever see her Gage again. But sometimes, an angel leads you down a path to find your soul again.

It’s as if nothing has ever changed and their feelings for each other are even stronger than before. But will they ever be able to get over the hurt of the past and finally have a future together?

Quiet Angel is both inspiring and poignant at the same time. It’s a story about first love and first heartbreak. It’s about being victimized and then fighting back. And it’s also about never wasting a single moment.

Prescott’s sweetly passionate story will have you swooning until the very end and you might even have to smile through some tears…

~ 5 Angel Wing Stars ~

What an inspiring story of, survival, hope and love!!!! This book knocked me off my feet. I absolutely loved the message the author was trying to give while reading this book.

Quiet Angel is the second book I have read by Prescott Lane and she is becoming a go to author for me. I truly enjoyed the first book I read by her called Perfectly Broken, but this book was even better!! Her writing and story telling has improved so much just between the two books. This story flowed effortlessly and was such an intriguing story that I didn't want to put it down. I will say that the subject matter of this book was a tough one. She covers child molestation, but the way that author wrote this story was extremely well. Nothing was too graphic and everything was written with tactfulness. The author is able to create the characters and tell the story so that the reader can feel everything the characters were feeling. Now don't get me wrong this wasn't all heavy, she even had me laughing at times with some of the secondary characters (Poppy). This was also an amazing love story about two young teenagers who fall in love and are separated by circumstances out of their control, but then are reunited years later. So if you are a fan of a second chance romance, this is the book to read.

I loved how the author wrote this book. The first 4 chapters are from when Gage and Layla are teenagers and when they first meet. Then she flash forwards 12 years and plays out there reunion and what happens from there. I thought the time lapse would bug me but it was very well written. In the present time, she fills in the blanks of what happened to both Gage and Layla over their 12 year separation .

I absolutely loved Gage and Layla's characters. Layla was such a strong heroine. Everything she was forced to endure as a child was horrific, but she came out of it a survivor and a stronger individual for it. I loved that as the story went on the author didn't portray Layla as the weak victim, which she had every right to be, but she showed that she was strong and could get through anything. Gage was such an amazing man. All he wanted to do was love and be with Layla. He knew from when he was a teenager that she was the one. I loved how protective he was over her, even if some of his tactics were the wrong ones. He always had Layla's best interest at heart. It was great watching these two grow together and building a lasting love.

The secondary characters were great!!! I LOVED Poppy (Layla's bff), Dash (Gage's bff), Helen (Gage's mom), Emerson (Gage's sister) and Ava, Jacob, and Connor (Gage's niece and nephews) They were great support for Layla and Gage, but also provided the comic relief when the story was getting too heavy. I think the only thing I wish we would've seen was what came of Emerson's story. I can't explain without ruining things, but I felt her part of the story just wasn't completed. I actually wouldn't mind a book about her and the kids.

I would 100% recommend this book. If you are looking for that great story about survival, hope and love, then this is the book for you. It will definitely pull at your heartstrings but you will end this book with a HUGE smile on your face. I look forward to more books from this author.

**JOSIE'S 4.5 STAR REVIEW**

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and it won’t be the last. This book far surpassed my expectations. I appreciate when a new to me author grabs my attention with her story. It had me falling for the innocence of a first time love and how despite the years and space that love remained the same. When I started to read the first chapter I fell in love with Layla and Gage, their awkwardness, innocence and connection, but I knew that there was something that would change. The story is told in two parts and two POV’s. It starts out where we get to see the early years when they are both very innocent. It then progresses to where it was years later when they are more mature, needy, intense and devoted.

Layla and Gage meet over one summer on St. Simons Island off the Georgia coast. Gage is a recent graduate away with his family before going off to the Naval Academy. What started out for him as an unwanted summer beach vacation changes when he sees a girl that completely captivates him. At that point nothing was the same for him.

Layla is staying with her grandmother for summer at her cottage. After meeting Gage on the beach there was something about him that drew her in. She knew Gage was different from the preppy guys. The two of them have this strong pull for one another and they decide to spend the summer together doing things. Even though they were attracted to one another there was a slow build up to their relationship. It was not an instant love and that made it all the more believable for me. They really spent time together and got to really know each other. Over the course of the summer you can really see how they started to fall in love but one tragic night changed everything for the pair. They do not see each other again for 12 years.

When their paths cross years later both are shocked to see one another again. The years have changed them both but the love and attraction they have is still evident. Tragedy tore them apart and tragedy will bring them together. I enjoyed reading how much the mature version of each character felt towards the other one. Gage had so many questions about what happened that summer night and Layla does not know how to explain what happened. When Gage finally learns the truth, his love and need to protect intensifies. Gage has been groomed to become the Governor of Georgia, but Layla (Angel’s) past might be a problem.

There is outside influences that will try to tear them apart. As well as cruel rumors, but the best thing about this couple is they stand by each other. Gage and Layla have to find out who is trying to destroy them and find a way to make their dreams for forever come true. Can Layla and Gage find their Happily Ever After? Can true love survive life’s ups and downs? I was not prepared for Layla’s secret but the author did an amazing job in showing readers her journey and how much each character has changed. Get ready to meet Gage and Angel, and find out just how far true love can stand the test of time and space.

I rated Quiet Angel by Prescott Lane FIVE LEAVES!!

This was my first book to read by Prescott Lane and without a doubt will not be my last book. Prescott Lane gained a new reader!!
Gage Montgomery and Layla Baxter meet one summer that will change their lives forever. They shared many beautiful moments together and believed their love would last forever. However, an event happened that left the two from seeing each other for twelve years. After twelve year gap, they share the same teenage love and so much more passion. Layla has had a really rough life and has had to make some very difficult decisions to help her along the way. When Layla met Gage that summer she knew things would be finally looking better and she could finally have a new beginning. Layla had to make a very a huge decision to leave in the middle of the night and not let Gage know where she went. Since then Gage has always wanted to know what happened to his “Angel”.
Gage and Layla burned up the pages together and their love story felt like it was truly meant to be. I love them because through tough times they’re still standing tall together. They lost each other before and they couldn’t imagine losing each other again; it would wreck the both of them. No matter what gets thrown at them or what dark holes they happen to fall into, they know they’ll pull through. They now have each other to lean on and can help the other one through what is going on.
Gage is the ultimate book boyfriend. Every time he would speak I would just swoon over him. Since he was not able to protect Layla from the difficult times in her life he wants to be her protector now and not let anything happen to her. Gage is a knight in shining armor. To Gage, Layla is the sun and the moon. Gage is determined to never be part again. The love he has for Layla just made my heart cry; I mean I fell hard for him from the first page!
Prescott Lane’s writing style is simple and beautiful. She was able to create a perfect story that you can’t stop reading, with strong characters you can easily relate to. You will go on a journey in this book from pain, love, forgiveness, heartbreak and then finding a happily ever after. This book is how Gage and Layla overcome everything and learn to love despite the past and everything bad that has happened.

Quite angel is the first book I read by Prescott Lane and it was amazing!

One summer, two people, one love!

Gage Montgomery was 18 when he first saw the one that would haunt him forever. Layla, a brown haired bookworm was just 16 when she met Gage, the boy next door. It was supposed to be a regular summer just before college for Gage but one girl changed everything for him. Gage and Layla fell for each other. The next thing Gage knows is that Layla is gone. No matter how hard Gage tried to find her, he never managed to locate her. Until fate brought them back together.

Now, 12 years later Gage and Layla can finally have what they dreamed of having when they were teens. Can they really though?

Time changes people. Gage has been blaming himself for Layla’s disappearance for a very long time. His feelings for her may have changed but he still holds on to the only thing he has from her, a wing pendent. He’s confused but above everything he wants to know why Layla left.

When Layla decided to leave, things weren’t hard only for Gage. She was having a harder time. The only thing that kept her going was the thought that her angel was protecting her. She has so many secrets that she kept hidden.

I really liked the book. It was a tough subject the author chose to work with but it came out nicely. In quite angel nothing was rushed. It had a nice flow and great characters. Layla was a strong person who tried to improve her life after a tragic past. Gage’s life changed the moment he met Layla. Her disappearance affected her deeply. He was mad at himself, at her and that made things complicated when they came across each other again.

One thing I didn’t like was Gage’s immature way of handling things. You can’t buy everything with money and you also can’t “imprison” someone just to keep them safe. What I did like though was how things turned out.

Moreover, I liked Poppy, Layla’s bff was so much fun to have around.

A story of a second chance in love. Gage and Layla’s journey will definitely touch you. There is a bit drama, some misunderstandings and trust issues but ultimately their story was captivating.

Totally recommended!

Gage and Layla met one summer when Layla arrived on St Simons Island to holiday with her grandmother. Gage had never seen her there before and he had been coming to stay on the island for years. He is intrigued with Layla, she is a bit shy, loves to read and is really cute. They strike up a friendship which leads into a sweet summer romance between them. Until one day Layla is just gone.

Layla has had a pretty harrowing past, terrible things happened to her in her childhood home that no child should ever have to go through and there were no adults in her life that she felt she could trust or turn to for help. The summer she spent with her grandmother was the best of her life and changed her for the better.

Twelve years later she is about to board a flight and right in front of her is Gage. The years have been kind to him and he is even more handsome than she remembers. He is a successful businessman and looks amazing. Gage cannot believe it, he was devastated that Layla had left with no explanation and has always wondered what happened to the sweet girl he called 'Angel.' Gage is determined to get answers from her.

Layla just wants to get on with her life, she has her own business and is finally in a place where she has found peace with her past. Seeing Gage again rattles her a bit and brings back all the feelings they shared so many summers ago.

Can these two open their hearts to each other once again and get the happy ever after that they both so deserve? This was a really sweet story of second chance love.

I give this 3.5 stars

Once again Lane has created a creative, enjoyable read that I fell in love with. The emotionally infused story had my heart on the line throughout. This well-structured novel was intricately plotted, taking readers on an adventure of love, loss, and return.

Lane takes second chance romance and gives it a twist. Life isn’t easy for these characters, but it’s a life that they’ve made their own. Their intertwining pasts and present create a heady mix for readers. At the same time, Lane developed them individually, letting you really get to know who they are.

This was a cute, sweet, heartfelt novel that is well worth reading. It’s a great standalone romance that will leave you with a smile on your face.

Has a serious subject through it, but still managed to be on the light and fluffy side without diminishing the heaviness of it all.

Truly, Madly, Deeply...
Gage Montgomery has a comfortable life, his family is financially well off, his parents love and support him and his future is essentially mapped out yet there is nothing pretentious about him. He has a strong work ethic, is responsible, respectful, well-mannered and all of that is already packaged in the teenage version. The charming and hardworking adult version carries all of those qualities forward however the older and wiser man has been changed by life events and it shows. When Gage and Layla’s paths unexpectedly cross 12 years after her unexplained disappearance, he’s a little edgier than his carefree teenage self and not so sweet and charming when circumstances are out of his control. Gage’s vulnerability where Layla’s concerned is a constant struggle and his temper, impatience and over-protectiveness are by-products of his desperation and fear of being left again. Fortunately, Gage is the full package, a great man that gives good grovel.

Angel...
Layla Baxter is easy to love, she’s strong, smart and mature, even as a teenager. Where Gage is very much, what you see is what you get, Layla is multilayered. She is not forthcoming with details about her life so you get the sense through her reactions, emotions and vague responses that something has happened to her though she isn’t willing to share. When Layla re-enters Gage’s life, there’s still a lot of unanswered questions but the pieces come together quickly, exposing an extraordinarily generous person that has overcome a horrific past. She has confidence in who she is and meets all challenges head on. Even when you think she has every right to pack it all in, she still has fight left in her. Layla bends, she doesn’t break.
5 words or less: level-headed, honest, kind, selfless, survivor

It Takes a Village...
If there’s a reoccurring theme throughout Prescott Lane’s stories, it’s that she writes an amazing supporting cast. I could rave about this group non-stop, they are truly fantastic! They’re funny, loving and caring and add so much depth to the story. The witty banter amongst all the characters is written so well, it captures the closeness friends and family share where they aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, have a good laugh at your expense or offer their support when needed.

Dash is Gage’s smart ass friend who never hesitates to make jokes at Gage’s expense but he always has his best interests at heart. Layla’s best friend, Poppy, is another favourite. Her poor hair takes the brunt of her relationship woes every single time. Gage’s older sister Emerson, her three children, and his mother, Helen, round out the loveable characters. Prescott Lane does a fabulous job writing these kids. They are a great addition to the story and she realistically portrays their interaction and dialogue with each other and with the adults trying to connect with them. When it’s time to rally the troops, Gage can always count on his sister and sweet mother. Nothing says supportive like a Steel Magnolia’esque gathering complete with profanity and inebriated women imbibing on the mini liquor bottles Emerson lifts from their airline. Clink, Clink, Clink… that’s the sound Emerson’s purse makes as she walks by. With so much goodness, it’s only fair to take a second and mention Layla’s evil conniving bitch of a mother and her monstrous half-brother. Times up.

How it All Went Down...
A teenage summer of firsts… Gage Montgomery is spending his summer holiday with his parents at their vacation home on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia before he enters the naval academy. A boring start to the trip changes for the better when he comes across a pretty girl wearing a big floppy hat. Ready to rearrange his whole life to include Layla Baxter, he’s devastated by her sudden and mysterious disappearance. For 12 years he carries the reminder of their summer together until fate brings them together once more. This time, Gage is determined the Layla won’t vanish again. Their age might have been the only thing working against them the first time around but now, they’ll have their own insecurities, secrets, and conspiring forces to contend with.

Did it Hit the Spot?
The teenage relationship between Gage and Layla proceeds at a very respectful pace. It’s tastefully written and isn’t about two horny teenagers ruled by their raging hormones. Even when they connect as adults, it’s not a quick jump into bed. The sexual tension is strung so tight, even I wanted them to hurry up and get to the good stuff but never fear, the sex scenes cometh with the perfect amount of heat.

The Big But...
I feel it’s only fair to slap a warning on this due to difficult subject matter. If you have read the review, you will recognize ‘survivor’ and a few other key words for what they are. Beyond that, Quiet Angel is an exceptionally well written book. Prescott Lane has a talent for writing really good banter and dialogue. She naturally captures everything from the unsure, slightly insecure teens to the relatable and understandable uncertainties both Gage and Layla carry forward into their adult relationship. Her cherry on top is a beautifully delivered epilogue that brought tears to my eyes because “We all need a little help. We all need a little hope.”

Each time I read a Prescott Lane book I fall further in love with her writing. This one blew me away for many reasons. First the boy fell and was left with no explanation to pick up the pieces. Second even after all that when the boy sees girl again and messes up he takes the blame and tries to be there for her. Third boy wants girl and never wants her to leave his side. He has the insecurities and fears of her running. Fourth I actually had times when it was the girl I wanted to smack upside the head. That is refreshing.

Gage is a boy who is on the cusp of college and becoming who his parents designed him to be when he met Layla. The broken and lost Layla. He fell hard that summer and so did she. But her problems found her and she ran. Ran without saying a word to him. Crushed the poor guy. Gage throughout is a sweet guy. Yes he has moments where you want to pull your hair out but that is because he is so afraid of being left and so in love with Layla that as his mother says if she runs again he will never be whole again. IT took him a long time to come back from the first time she ran and he never really did. Instead he buried himself in work and succeeding and never got close to other women. They were just someone to help keep the fear and loneliness away. He walked away before they could do like Layla did.

Layla was the girl that we see as strong but still scared. She crushes Gage and when she sees him years later doesn’t know what to say to him. He is his charming self and helps her out but is too fearful to open up again. He does try when he goes to the bookstore but is just to scared she will take what is left of his heart and squash it. His sister does intervene and that leads to the sweet beautiful story we get within the pages of Quiet Angel. Gage is there for Layla when she needs him always. He is supportive and kind. Loving and wonderful. Layla is hesitant and does take some of his actions wrong and flings them back at him. He can’t help his fears he does try though. She has a temper at times and sometimes fun to see others she flies off before knowing everything and doesn’t give anyone a chance to explain. It leads to some stupid things on her half and some entertaining moments for us. Dash and Layla’s friend are a hoot. Those two I can’t wait to read a story on. Gage’s mom is so sweet and steadfast she shows Layla what family is. As does all of Gage’s family. They accept her without question even after she hurt gage and does so continuously even out of love. They have a tough battle with her insecurities and his fear but this is their story of how they became who they are after the summer Layla walked away and how they found one another and got their happy ever after. The story isn;t all sweet and perfect they like we all do with loved ones fight and argue. They disagree and hurt each other. Gage is overprotective at times but it comes from the heart. Layla flies off the handle and does things that hurt and doesn’t think before she acts. Love can have us do crazy things this book shows us that. We see the Gage that is kind and loving and also the businessman as well. No side is left from us in this book. They are open books and that draws you in. We get to see the good, the bad and the ugly.

Ms. Lane has written a sweet loving tale of a boy who meets the girl of his dreams, loses her and doesn’t know why and shuts himself off, finds her again and their love and their way to being together. A wonderfully written story about love and family. Loyalty and friendship and following your heart no matter what. A story that should be read and enjoyed for what it is about love and family friendship and forgiveness and finding what you lost- your best friend and love.

What a perfectly beautiful read about young, first loves and second chances. From the first page I was immediately in love with Prescotts' writing. Immediately I noticed that Prescott writes in the “show it to me, don’t tell me” descriptive style and I found I had quite a few highlights before chapter 1 was even complete. The sentiment and language spoke to my heart I easily felt the blush and giddiness of first love.

Gage and Layla meet at 18 and 16 respectively during a summer break along the coast of Georgia. Gage had all the advantages in the world - he is well provided for and in a well connected family. Layla is a lovely 16 year old , in touch with a spiritual side of herself and spending time at her grandmothers due to some unfortunate family circumstances. The same circumstances that drove her to her grandmothers then drive her away and the tragedy that becomes Laylas’ young life is set. As quickly as Gage are Layla are together, they are torn apart.

Fast forward a dozen years, and well, fate brings them back into each others lives and even years apart, they still have an amazing connection. As with any couple torn apart and brought back together, they face A LOT of obstacles; not the least being Laylas’ tragic past and Gages distrust in Layla due to her disappearance a dozen years ago. But, Gage is a sentimental man with an innate need to protect Layla. Its apparent that he feels as though he let her down once and combining that with his misgivings he becomes a bit overbearing. Overall Gage is a wonderful lead male character with a bit of sexy and a lot of bossy sweetness. He’s is a good guy with great intentions, he’s just horrible executing them. His need to have Layla back in his life leads him to a fast and furious courtship and with this, mistakes are going to be made, but Gage is pretty smooth and knows how to make a women swoon:

“The story of my life begins and ends with you,” he said. “And it’s not finished. We only just started.”

In Layla, we have a sensible and strong female character. She has moved on with her life and for the most part gotten past the poor treatment she received as a teen from her family. Again Prescott does a wonderful job creating a strong character that although she’s dealt with some very bad situations and she remains a bit insecure, she’s a fighter. The story line deals with some very heavy material and I think the author does a remarkable job portraying this and how it plays out in Layla’s life.

The second chance relationship that Gage and Layla attempt is a bit rushed by Gages need to keep Layla in his life. That mixed with the many interference's of work, family, and outside influences, they go through about as much as any couple could stand. I think it was just the right amount of drama although there were a few moments I came close to throwing my kindle at a wall, but really the angst factor was just right. The story progresses at a good pace with with nary a dull moment, making this a really easy and enjoyable read. At one point I had to set aside for a few days but when dove back in the pacing of the story was still right. What’s more, my emotions were pretty invested in wanting this second chance romance to work so I did not stop until the very end. Heck, I even read the acknowledgements and got a bit of a laugh.

This is most definitely a 5 Star read for me and was the exact right story I needed. I highly recommend this sexy and angsty love story!

3 Sweet Stars!

After reading Perfectly Broken and loving it, I jumped at the chance to read this book.  After reading it I did like it , but at times I liked the idea of the story more than the actual story.

Layla Turner shows up out of the blue and changes Gage Montgomery at the age of 18 then changes it dramatically again 12 years later.  Layla blows in and the two young teens fall in love but there is so many things that Gage doesn't know about Layla.  After falling in love Gage is ready to change his future for his new love, but doesn't get the chance once Layla disappears in the middle of the night.

Now 12 years later fate as intervened and brought these two back together but pasts hurts are hard to get over and Layla's past is coming to the forefront of her life.  Knowing that Gage has lost Layla once he moves mountains to make sure that he doesn't lose her again.

"Sorry I'm early.  I couldn't wait.  12 years is long enough."

Loving and protecting is a fine line when you keep the truth for protection and doing the right thing.  One thing that Layla hates are secrets.  Once she left her heart to protect him but when he does the same thing back she doesn't like it, which causes her to want to run again when Gage keeps protecting her.

Their love story was sweet.  The message of the book was good.  The spiritual undertone complemented this story.  However, the thing that held me back was everything was to perfect, too clean cut even the bad and sad elements of the story, which left me wanting more from this story.  In the end I did like it but my connection with the book was more superficial then I normally like when I emotionally connect with a book.

Although this story touched on a heavy subject matter it still managed to be very sweet and hopeful. The story was separated into two parts. Part one was very much to set the scene. We meet the caring, attentive, sun kissed and gorgeous 18 year old Gage Montgomery. He has his life planned out by his father and is spending the summer with his parents in their beach house before heading off to the Naval Academy in the Fall. One look at the beautiful brunette Layla Baxter, the 16 year old with plenty of secrets; who is staying with her Grandmother and he is done for! It was sweet to watch them fall in love; two adolescents, exploring, learning together and having fun. Gages’ attentiveness to Layla had me swooning with his efforts. Then all of a sudden she was gone without a trace.

<3>“My dad told me it would be a big mistake to fall in love this summer.” His fingers followed the cord and came dangerously close to the curve of her breast. “I told him it was too late.”

Part two takes place 12 years later where a chance meeting brings them back into each other’s lives. Of course, 12 years will change people. Losing Layla way back had done a number on Gage. He had spent years harbouring resentment towards her yet unable to move on from her. When Layla finally divulged her secrets to Gage my heart sank. She really had a rough ride through life and I was hoping with all my might that Gage would be the one to give her the life and family she deserved.

Although Gage seemed too good to be true at times, their path didn’t run smoothly, there were fears, drama, hurt and a lack of communication to work through along the way; and trust issues seemed to play a large part in that.

There were some awesome secondary characters in this book; the most memorable being Layla’s best friend Poppy. She was crude, great fun and had the most fantastic banter!

“No shaved head? I guess things went well with Dash.”
“He’s so hot!”
“I know! And his eyes – I would kill for his long, full lashes.”
“I don’t care about his lashes!” Poppy said. “It’s his long full…”
“You did not!”
Yes, I did! Several times! It was a total sexpalooza! I just got back from Atlanta this morning.”

This is very much an insta-love read. In fact everything seemed to be very much insta. It is told in Third Person with duel point of view which was a little distracting at times as it switched often without warning. I have to say, I have read and enjoyed all of Prescott Lane’s books but unfortunately, this one was my least favourite. I found it harder to connect with the main characters fully, maybe it was because I’m very much used to reading in First Person so it could just be my issue. I did feel that for me this book needed more depth to it. Although I am a little disappointed with this book I am still a huge fan of this author and look forward to reading more from her.

5 poetically perfect STARS!!!

I undeniably LOVED this book! Every once in a while, a book really captures your heart and pulls at your soul. Every once in a while an author – Prescott Lane – comes along and poetically masters a book. With words that harbor so much meaning you can’t stop reading and feels that you can’t help but to feel. You can’t put it down even for a second because, for the love of all that is, what the hell happens next!

I won’t give away any specific information about this book. No spoilers here folks! But here’s what I will say …

“Butterflies are signs from angels. They mean change is coming – a transformation.”

I adored Layla and Gage, their problems, their connection. And I couldn’t get enough of the secondary cast! (Small note to author – Poppy and Dash need a book!) Moving on. This book was subtly layered. This book evoked almost every emotion possible. I felt sadness, hope, desperation, angst, need, pride, confusion, and love. Love that truly did stand the ‘test of time’. Unbelievable!

“4,524 days ago, I saw the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen. Then I lost her. 70 days ago, I found her again.”

I couldn’t get enough of their seemingly instant connection. It seemed as if they were meant to be where they were at that exact moment. They found each other just as they both needed someone. Layla was having some ‘complications’ with her family so she’s staying with her grandmother on St. Simmons island. Gage came to the island every year for summer. From the moment they meet, Gage knew everything had changed. She was different to him. Not like all the others girls back home. And Layla somehow finds him comforting as well. As they get to know each other, I could feel the uncharted heat between them. They hung out, talked about their dreams and, more than once, I found my cheeks sore from constantly smiling :) And ohmigosh I loooovd his nickname for her. Every moment they spent together, seemingly perfect.

“He knew she wasn’t coming back – not this morning, not tonight, not ever.”

As the book progressed, my emotions were especially heightened! What happened in the 12 years since they had seen one another?! I think that’s the best part of reading an excellent book such as this. At first there are so little details and so many questions. As you dive deeper, become vested, you find all the puzzle pieces to make the picture just right. Looking back, I am blown away at all the bread crumbs that the author left. How I didn’t know at the time I would need that bread crumb – but I picked it up anyway. Every word, sentence, paragraph, and page mattered. There were no stones unturned.

The book has an HEA and is told in 2 parts. One – 12 years ago. Two – Present day. Brilliant choice! It was chronologically seamless! And being it’s in third person POV, I was able to be in the heads of both characters! I have been a fan of Prescott Lane since Perfectly Broken – another must read – and I have to say she raised the bar. Hats off to you, Prescott! This book will stay with me for a while. So go forth good book people! Go take the fascinating journey that is Quiet Angel!

At 16 she fell in love, when she needed someone the most.

Gage 18 at the time would have given her the world.

But life got in the way and she left without a goodbye.

Twelve years later they meet again..Is this destiny, giving them a second chance?

I guess you have to read and find out.

 photo QuietAngel-Teaser1.jpg

This love story was beautiful, but heartbreaking at times. The summer Layla and Gage fell in love was beautiful and sweet. Reading about their time together one summer of their life, made me fall in love with the book so quickly. They were young, so in love and full of hope..it was everything a love story should be. Then the book turned very serious quickly. The things Layla had to go through in life was heartbreaking, just because her mom was the biggest b*tch known to man. Layla’s life was hard, but she was strong and fought with every fiber of her being to get through life.

 photo QuietAngel-Teaser2.jpg

As for Gage, wow he is a man every woman would dream of having. A real protector, very loving, caring, forgiving, full of compassion and he would go at the end of the earth for Layla. The love he had for Layla was pure and sweet. And the story is also full of sexy heat when they finally hit the sheets. Keep in mind this book does not focus on the sex, the focus is the love that these two characters have for each other. Believe me, if you give this book a chance, you will definitely fall in love with Layla and Gage. Of course I cannot forget about their close friends Dash and Poppy, those two are a riot. I love them. They made the story so fun and interesting.

Be warned that if you read this book, there is some serious subject that this book deals with. You will either appreciate it or hate it. As for me it broke my heart, but it’s a great story and the story just flowed nicely.

Thx for sharing your book with me Prescott Lane. I loved it.

Gage Montgomery found his love of a lifetime in one summer of his life when he was eighteen years old. He was young, hormone-filled teen, and yet he knew deep in his heart and this was the girl he was waiting for. Everything was perfect, until she left and broke his heart.

For Layla Baxter, being on St. Simons Island for the summer when she was sixteen was the best and safest summer of her life. She never thought she’d met a boy who can make her feel cherished and love. She thought she can finally have her happy ending, but an accident brought a halt to everything. She needed to leave. She needed to break his heart.

The moment they found each other, twelve years later, it was quite a whirlwind. There was some resistance at first, considering what happened in the past, but there was no way Gage was going to let her out of his sight again. This time, they were in for keeps. They were in for forever. But first, she needed to tell him why she had to go away. Can Cage take the truth?

Her strength was astounding. Layla was pretty amazing for coming out strong and successful after everything she had been through, and it wasn’t an easy task. But she was a survivor, she lived, and finally she was going to have her happy ending. Now, if only she can convince Gage she was in for the long haul.

Prescott Lane gives us a beautifully-written classic tale of love and second chances that goes beyond time and distance. It’s a story of strength and courage, of the importance of trust and honesty in a relationship and on how true love can defy all the odds and pass the test of time.

Layla and Gage meet when they are both still teenagers but they both also instantly know they are meant to be, they are connected. But Layla has a past, a horrible past she was running from but it catches up to her and she leaves Gage behind. 12 years later they meet once again, but can Gage overcome the fear of Layla running and can Layla face what happened to her and let Gage be there to protect and support her?

Honestly I was never quite sure how to feel about this story. I jumped back and forth, one minute I was really enjoying it, the next I wasn’t. But the bits I liked and the plot itself won me over in the end.

“I want to be your naughty angel,” she said. “I want to show you what heaven’s really like.”

Now there is no denying, this romance is an insta-love!! Massively insta-love and those are not my favourite but Layla and Gage were just so adorable together I moved past it and just enjoyed watching Layla and Gage together and there were definitely trials they both had to overcome so it wasn’t a case of plain sailing at all.

“She wanted to freeze this moment, their past month on the island, to capture it in a bottle and hold it close to her heart. She needed something to hold onto.”

Overall the story itself was interesting, however I was confused at some parts, I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t go into too much detail, just that I wasn’t sure whether it was going to turn into a magical story as well. Apart from that though there was romance, laughter, drama, shock and sad moments; a little bit of everything a good story needs. It kept me entertained and invested in the characters and what the outcome would be.

“I missed you, too, but you were never far.” He touched his shirt with the wings inside. “You were always there.”

I loved the ending, I thought it was beautiful epilogue and it was all rounded up really well. My only slight criticism was I wanted a more final conclusion with Layla’s mother but that’s just me being picky. Overall a really lovely story about young love never ending and moving on from the past.

I honestly have no clue how Prescott Lane does it but she makes me love her contemporaries. As a rule when I start to read one I start off automatically hating them and the author either earns my love or I abandon the book half way.

My requirements are: 1. Have a female main character that can stand on her own, 2. Have a male main character that is not perfect, 3. not automatically make me come to the conclusion that there is going to be a definite HEA, 4. have a meaty story, 5. a spunky best friend. If it doesn’t have all of those things, you’ve lost me.

As with her first two books First Position and Perfectly Broken, the author sucked me into the story right off. Layla has a mix of insecure thinking, broken background and slight wishy washy way that makes for an awesome female lead. There are times where you want to scream at her that she’s giving in too quickly and other times where she is letting herself get in her own way. The same can be said for Gage. I loved, loved, loved the beginning of this book. You are treated to Layla and Gage’s backstory. You are given hints that Layla’s life kinda sucks and that Gage is just what she needs. You are left with an empty feeling, kind of what you imagine Gage felt, when it was all ripped away. Fast forward 12 years later and we find both of them grown up with spunky best friends! (Like I said, the book follows all my rules) The two of them are thrown together in a meet-cute and the story skyrockets from there. Family feuds, secrets, illness and political aspirations throw quite a few road bumps in their story but the best part is reading about how the navigate it. There are a few misunderstandings but not in the usual “contemporary” way (read DRAMA with a capital D). It’s more a story of how two teenage lovebirds learn to trust each other and navigate the adult world of dating. I HIGHLY recommend that you take the time to read this book. If you like imperfect characters and some hot scenes….this book is for you. 5 stars from me.

Gage is 18 and Layla is 16 the summer they meet. Gage has just graduated high school and
has been accepted at the Naval Academy. Layla has come to spend time with her grandmother and doesn't know where she will be when school starts. Layla has secrets she hides from everyone. They fall in love and everything is great until Layla disappears without saying goodbye.

Quite by accident, they find each other 12 years later. Layla is still hiding secrets but wants to make Gage understand why she left so suddenly because she still loves him. Gage still loves her but doesn't know if he he can let her back in his life for fear she will run away again. Can these two work through their problems and find their HEA?

A very deep, ugly theme is explored in this book. I feel the author did a wonderful job of exploring this topic without going into the horrifying specifics. Instead, the story showed the need for public awareness, the need for resources to help the victims, the fact that it happens to ALL classes, races, religions, etc. It emphasized the survivors are strong and resilient and shouldn't be ashamed because they are innocent victims. The survivors need to be honored for all they have overcome. It truly made this story stand out as special among romances.

That being said, it should be obvious I really like this book. The characters are well developed and interesting. So are the secondary characters. I liked all the characters except the "bad guys". The writing is crisp and never drags. The situations are realistic. Even with the dark topic I mentioned, the story is not dark and brooding. It takes a lot for Layla and Gage to get to the point where HEA is possible but I feel all the misgivings and issues were realistic in their situation.

This is a standalone novel. However, I can see this being turned into a series with the secondary characters being spotlighted. They were certainly interesting enough to carry a book. I hope there are more books.

I highly recommend reading Quiet Angel and look forward to reading more books by this author.

This is a two part romance. The first focuses on Layla and Gage as teenagers and their young love. A seemingly shy girl with her books, Layla, shows up to the same vacation town where Gage resides each summer. Suddenly Gage’s break before college doesn’t look as bad. In an effort to protect her from other boys, Gage acts as her protector before actually meeting her. In natural progression, they fall into an intense friendship and romance until Layla abruptly disappears one night never to be heard from again.

Part two centers on the present day. Its twelve years later and Layla and Gage find their paths crossing in an airport. Is it possible they can have a second chance? More importantly can Gage get past her abandonment? And can Layla overcome what made her run in the first place?

The second part of Quiet Angel is where we really get to see the characters develop. Layla is independent yet scared, driven yet scarred. She struggles to overcome a dark past but it has already cost her so much. Gage has fulfilled the entire plan set in place for him at a young age. He went to college and the military. Now he is CEO of the family business with political prospects in the future.

I first came to know Lane’s writing with Perfectly Broken where heavier subject matter intertwines with a charming romance. Fortunately, this is no different. It’s a beautifully written story of second chances a moving beyond an abysmal past. The characters are complex, flawed, and real. They experience bumps in the road but if Layla and Gage can get past those then they’re guaranteed a HEA.
