I enjoyed the first Ben Canaan mystery, perhaps because of the Turkish setting. This second about the character left me unsatisfied. I kept going online, assuming that I had missed a series entry, as Ben had clearly had many adventures after his introduction into the world of intrique in Constantinople. For me, this second series entry was too noir and violent for me, and I found I actually didn't like Ben that much. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy books in Ian Fleming's James Bond series or noir mysteries from the early 1900s.
