Everything in Demitri's life changed when he met Nikolay Chernykrov. All the time he had spent surviving during a global zombie apocalypse was challenged by this beautiful man who opened his eyes to the world and showed him what wonders lie within. Demitri fell—hard—but how was he to know that the whole thing would end in tragedy and heartbreak?
Now, five years later, the only thing shared between them is a little girl—their little girl. But what is Demitri to do when he hears news that sends him right back to where he left off, reunited with Nikolay by unexpected circumstance. Now, the two must face their troubled pasts as they go on a journey to save the most important piece of their relationship.
Between new friends and war, can they rekindle the flames that once burned between them? Or is the love they shared destined to become just another soulless husk like everything else taken by the apocalypse?

Our Shared Apocalypse is the first book by author Niki Ghostlaw and an absolutely incredible way to burst onto the scene as a writer! Ghostlaw's writing really grabs a hold of the reader, absorbing them into post-apocalyptic America with her descriptive prose and intricate magic system. Both the main and side characters feel fully developed giving the reader ample choice for favourites from both heroes and villains alike. Our Shared Apocalypse is not only a post-apocalypse story but also an LGBT story, and like the good LGBT-centric books, the main struggle isn't anything to do with the characters being a part of the Queer community. Demitri is a transgender male, but the way Ghostlaw describes his transition, and continued efforts to ease gender dysphoria, is really tastefully written and it is genuinely heart warming to see that it was not a point of contention for the characters.
The book flicks back and forth between point of views but for the majority follows Demitri, whose daughter was stolen away from him a few years back by her other father and his family. During his travels across the barren wasteland of an America that has been ravaged by ghouls, zombies, bloodmagi, and enforcers, Demitri overhears a missive on the radio about a missing girl that sounds suspiciously like his daughter Zelina. Demitri and his friends travel to the Chernykrov estate in the hopes of settling past feuds and finding the girl, only to accidentally start a war between two factions of bloodmagi that has even the most powerful of the Chernykrov's questioning whether they will see the next day.
The bloodmagi in Our Shared Apocalypse were really interesting. The idea of a superhuman subspecies created in a laboratory isn't a particularly new idea in sci-fi and fantasy novels, but the execution of Ghostlaw's writing gave it a fresh, new feel that keeps the reader engaged throughout. There are a few different factions (or families) of bloodmagi in the world, but the story does a really good job of explaining the connections without making it seem unnatural or blocky.
Overall, Our Shared Apocalypse is an enchanting read that gets the reader completely obsessed with the well developed characters and their struggles. I'm extremely excited for any forthcoming books in this series.
