Rate this book
He is her ruin … but she is his redemption. A talented weaver with ambitions. A reckless warrior on a path of destruction. A love woven from scandal.
Fiona has spent years perfecting her craft as a weaver. When she’s commissioned to create a series of tapestries for Dounarwyse Castle on the Isle of Mull, it’s her chance to prove herself—and escape the constraints of her overbearing family forever.

But from the moment she arrives, the laird’s wild eldest son sets his sights on her.

Ailean returns from war a hero—but without the lands or purpose to match his reputation. Restless and reckless, he’s a man careening toward self-destruction. Then he meets sharp-tongued, ambitious, and utterly captivating. She’s a challenge he can’t resist, a distraction he desperately needs.

Fiona knows getting involved with Ailean would destroy everything she’s worked for. Her craft, her independence, her hard-won freedom. All of it hangs in the balance.

But Ailean is used to taking what he wants. And when their desire finally ignites, the scandal doesn’t just threaten Fiona’s future—it shatters it.

And now, Ailean comes face-to-face with the ugly consequences of his actions. Fiona’s ruin.

But if he wants redemption, he’ll have to fight for the woman he loves—not as a warrior claiming a prize, but as a man proving he’s worthy of her.

Full of suspense, emotion, and delicious spice, SONS OF MULL is a spin-off series from ROGUES OF MULL and HIGHLAND SCANDAL. The trilogy follows three warriors—Craeg, Ailean, and Greig—and the fierce women who make them question everything they thought they knew about duty, honor, and love.

This time around, we’re dealing with Ailean’s story.

This series, Sons of Mull, are about three friends all from the Isle of Mull. Ailean has always had everything he’s ever wanted—women, glory, everything. Unfortunately for her, Fiona never has. She’s been the one of her family who ended up doing all the work while her younger sisters profited from her labor. Now, she finally has the chance to leave her family and go to Dounarwyse Castle and employ her skill as a weaver to create a tapestry for the lady of the castle. I really do love these medieval romances. Author Jayne Castel is an expert at describing medieval Scotland so well, that I almost feel as I were there with the characters. In this story, these two really do go through a lot and grow and mature before they can be together. Of course, we have the requisite heartfelt sigh at the end of the story.

Jayne Castel has done it again, another must read Highlander romance. Every time I read one of her books I think it is my favorite. Then I read the next one and it becomes my new favorite. Ruin & Redemption is no different, it has become my new favorite.

I couldn't help falling in love with Fiona. She came from a rough childhood, complete with mean, uncaring parents and siblings. Luckily she had a great talent as a weaver and that was her ticket out of her hometown and all the way to the castle. She came to the castle to work hard, keep her head down, and build her reputation as a talented weaver. Then she met Ailean, the first born son of the Laird, Rae Maclean. He turned her life upside down and would eventually lay ash to her world.

Ailean was a harder character to love. He was cocky, arrogant, and did things without worrying about the consequences. He had come back from fighting in the war for his country and was finding it hard to settle back into civilian life and learn to one day be the Laird, as was his birthright. He was interested in Fiona from the moment he saw her and chased he relentlessly until he got what he wanted. Of course, all he could offer her was sex, as someone of his station did not marry someone of her station. That seem to be fine with him, as he did not want anything more than that. As the story went on you watched him slowly, oh so slowly, realize every action has a reaction. He grew and matured into a man he could proud of and live with. Unfortunately that would not help repair the damage done to Fiona and her life. It was a hard journey and he was not the only one that paid the price.

As always it was delightful to see some favorite characters from earlier books in Ailean and Fiona's story. They always make the story richer and more interesting. It is nice to see how their lives are progressing. The ending of the book was more than I could have hoped for and I shed a tear or two for both Ailean and Fiona. They both matured so much and deserved every happiness. You can never go wrong reading a Jayne Castel book and this one will be so worth your time!

Ruin & Redemption
Sons of Mull Book #2
Jayne Castel
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ailean is a true battle hardened Scot, but he has no lands and feels he has no purpose in life. He is restless and reckless, and well on his way to self- destruction. Then he meets the new waever, and she's totally captivating. She's also a challenge he can't resist, a distraction he is in sore need of.

Fiona knows better than to get involved with the Laird's son. Especially the son who will inherit everything. She knows getting involved with Ailean will destroy everything she has worked so hard for. Her craft, her independence, and her hard won freedom. It all hangs in the balance.

But Ailean is used to getting what he wants. He's always been able to woo any woman with his charm. And when their desire finally ignites, the scandal doesn't just threaten Fiona's future. It totally shatters it.

And now, for the first time Ailean comes to realize that he has just ruined Fiona's life and they both have to face the consequences of his actions.

But it's not as easy as one may think. If Ailean wants redemption, he'll have to fight for the woman he loves. Not as a warrior claiming his prize, but a man who's worthy of her love.

Will Fiona finally forgive Ailean? Or will she harbor so much pain that she won't let herself love the one man who is perfect for her?

Jayne Castel does it again. What an absolutely brilliant book. It grabbed me in from the get go and wouldn't let me back up for air until the story was finished. Ailean was a wonderful hero who really loves Fi, but knows if she will ever forgive him, she'll have to come to terms with everything on her own time. And Fi, that poor girl was used and abused by her own family for so long that she felt like she was worthless. She needed to believe in herself and her craft. I really enjoyed reading this story and can't wait for the next book in this series.

There’s something deeply gripping about a story that leans into both destruction and healing—and Ruin & Redemption delivers exactly that.

From the very first pages, I was pulled into a world that feels raw, emotional, and beautifully conflicted. Jayne Castel has a way of writing characters who don’t just exist on the page—they ache, they struggle, and they carry the weight of their pasts in a way that feels incredibly real. I found myself connecting most with the emotional undercurrents of the story: the quiet moments of vulnerability, the tension between what was lost and what could still be reclaimed.

What stood out to me most was how the narrative balances darkness with hope. The “ruin” isn’t just external—it’s internal, woven through the characters’ choices, regrets, and fears. But the “redemption”? That’s where the story really shines. It unfolds gradually, never rushed, and feels genuinely earned rather than handed over too easily.

The pacing worked well for me overall, though there were a few moments where I wished certain scenes had been expanded just a little more—particularly when it came to deeper emotional confrontations. Still, these didn’t take away from my overall experience; if anything, they left me wanting more time in this world.

There’s also a richness to the atmosphere that I really appreciated. Whether it’s the setting, the tone, or the layered relationships, everything feels intentionally crafted to pull you in and keep you there.

For me, this was a solid four-star read: immersive, emotional, and thoughtfully written. It’s the kind of story that lingers after you’ve turned the last page—not because it’s perfect, but because it makes you feel something real.

Another great love story from Jayne Castel!! Ruin and Redemption is the second book in The Sons of Mull series which follows the sons of the three sisters featured in her Highland Scandal series. I could not put this one down as there was either drama or deep emotion at every turn. This book really has all the feels and I absolutely loved it.

Accomplished weaver Fiona Mackinnon finally has a chance to escape her unloving family when she receives a commission from the wife of the clan Chieftain. She will be working at the keep on a fancy new loom as she creates a tapestry recreating the epic battle of Dounarwyse many years earlier.

The Chieftain's oldest son Ailean MacLean has returned from the war against the English on the mainland and is finding it difficult to settle into life back home. He has little interest in his father's lessons on how to rule the clan and even less desire to be the heir. But what he does desire is the beautiful new weaver, despite his father's absolute law that there will be no dallying with the servants or staff.

I loved Fiona from the start, and Ailean quickly grew on me. Sparks fly and calamity abounds as circumstances force them both to start over in disgrace in a small border town. Fiona vows to never forgive or forget, and AIlean must do a lot of growing as he seeks to make amends with both his father and Fiona. The path to HEA is paved with colorful townspeople and drama, and lots and lots of emotion. The ending was so sweet but also bittersweet as I was so sorry to see this book come to an end. But there is one more friend that will get his story, so I am eagerly awaiting the last tale in the series!

We have Fiona Mackinnon has spent her life working in the shadows.
But she is gifted and talented artist and weaver! She beautiful and buxom and has been exploited by her family for her talents! She has given all of her warming’s to them and she looks like a pauper!
But the lady of the keep has commissioned her to weave a tapestry that tells a tale of the great Battle of Dounarwyse from people that actually experienced it! She encounters Aileen Maclean and he is a handsome, braw Scot who is used to getting and taking what he wants without consequences! He wants Fiona and takes her to a Glen not even indoors to do the deed!
Fiona I despaired after that but she kept her distance for the most part until a mutual enemy exposes them! It was a very raw and shattering moment for all! Fiona learned how little Ailean valued her and their trysts! Ailean is cast away but Fiona leaves first! Somehow they wind in the same place! It is a favorite for Ailean! With a lot of reflection and self loathing he starts to become the man his father wants and needs him to be! Can Fiona ever forgive him!? Is there any hope for redemption? Or only ruin!
You definitely want to cheer for this couple!

Very well written, full of drama, society, action, adventure, abuse, family, steam, friends, clans, villains, history and intrigue. Life is hard for Fiona as her father and mother let her know that everything is always her fault. When given a chance to work at a castle for Lady Kylie to weave a tapestry of a battle that her husband and family fought in and won. When leaving to start her new life, her mother tells her how useless she is and hopes all goes wrong for her. Once there she meets Lord Rae and Lady Kylie and the rest of the family. The one who catches her eye is Ailean, first son and heir to the Lair. Working on the tapestry gives her great pleasure and now making new friends. Ailean and Fiona bump heads and feelings but both really want the same thing. Once Lord Rae finds them together, Ailean doesn't stand up for her so she leaves to make a new life. Ailean realizes she leaves and he himself gets disowned. He heads out to find her but she didn't head home so he tries the other way. They run into each other at Ardnacross , where he is to rebuild the tower and she is trying to make a name of being a weaver again. Has lots to keep you reading and wanting more. Would strongly recommend to everyone.

Wow! Loved this so much!
This is book 2 of the Sons of Mull series and was just as amazing as book 1.
This story follows Ailean as he tries to navigate life back at Dounarwyse Castle.
As the oldest son he is groomed to take over as Laird some day but is loathe to do so, rebelling every step of the way.
Fiona is a gifted weaver who has been commissioned to weave a tapestry of the battle of Dounarwyse for the laird and his wife.
She will need to leave her home and live in the castle to do so.
Both Aileen and Fiona meet and are drawn to each other and their passion ignites.
However, their time together is thrilling but also limited and bound to get them into trouble if found out.
Everything falls apart around them when they are discovered and what follows is a sad, beautiful story of two people hurt and disillusioned that after much heartbreak slowly rebuilding a life for themselves, without each other.
But both unable to forget each other.
Can Fiona ever forgive Aileen and let him into her heart?
Such a great read, steamy at times with wonderful characters.
I loved the storyline and catching up with Aileen’s friends and look forward to Greig’s story.
Thank you to Jayne Castel and Booksirens for the opportunity to read this story.

This second book in the Sons of Mull series was such a rewarding continuation. I always love revisiting familiar characters and seeing how their lives continue to unfold.

Ailean and Fiona’s story really centers on consequences and how choices ripple outward and the work it takes to face and grow from them. Fiona completely stole my heart. Coming from a background where she was overlooked and overworked, watching her take the brave step toward building a life of her own—and embracing her talent as a weaver—was so satisfying. Her strength felt quiet but powerful.

Ailean was a bit harder to warm up to. He’s charismatic, but he crosses boundaries without much thought for the fallout. That said, I appreciated his growth. It wasn’t loud or dramatic, but rather a steady, believable progression as he begins to understand how his actions affect Fiona.

Jayne Castel continues to be one of my go-to authors for historical fiction. This was a character-driven, emotional installment that adds depth to the series in a meaningful way.

Choices in life can be hard but nothing is harder but yet makes it easier than facing ones own truths!

We meet Fiona a strong and talented weaver. She lives with her family and is only looked on as a money maker for her skills. She gets an opportunity of a lifetime to work at the castle to weave a piece of work.
Ailean has just returned from fighting and is now back home to learn the ways of being the next Laird. This is a role he is not taking seriously and him and his father are at odds. Ailean is arrogant and used to getting what he wants but right now he is not really sure of what that is.
When the two meet sparks fly! We follow them in the story in which they both will face hardship, growth, misunderstandings but most importantly they will face thier own truths in life and term up to them.
I really enjoyed the story and look forward to the next in the series.

Ailean Maclean is a returning war hero. He is restless and has all the negative young male attitudes that make him strut around the keep. He is on a difficult journey to becoming an adult, accepting who he is and figuring out what he wants.

Fiona Mackinnon is an accomplished weaver who has helped support her selfish family and they expect her to continue to support them. But, Fiona has accepted a commission to make a great tapestry for Dounarwyse Castle and she is required to live in the castle.

Ailean and Fiona are two strong personalities heading toward a clash. When it happens, there are immediate consequences. Ailean accepts his punishment that was a big surprise to me. Fiona tries to escape it. Their relationship is an interesting journey of growth. This is a well written book with great facts about Scotland. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next one!

Facing Truth Changes Everything
Let me start by saying that I loved Fiona from the very beginning. "You go girl"
This is such a heartwarming story of two wonderful characters that have a lot to learn about life.
Fiona a young talented sharp tongue girl who faces reality and stays true to who she is.
Ailean is most intriguing and we follow him through many trials of growing up and facing just who he is and what he wants out of life.
While reading this story I said outload many "Oh No's, one "Thank Goodness, and a few Yeses!
The story moves at a fast pace with many pages igniting with high passion between Fiona and Ailean.
Very well written love story with lots of emotions and many wonderful characters throughout the story made this a thrilling and heartfelt enjoyable story not to miss:

Fiona Mackinnon is a weaver ,an excellent one at that, she has been commissioned by the Lady of Dounarwyse Castle on the Isle of Mull to create a tapestry of a past battle.

Aileen Maclean is the eldest son of the Laird of Dounarwyse Castle, albeit a restless and at times reckless
Fiona leaves behind her family for this new venture , what she doesn't reckon is her reaction to Aileen , or his of her
Whilst I loved Craeg and Hazel's story, Jayne ramped it up with this second instalment , it had angst , excitement and anger, all combined to give a very readable story.
As with all of Jayne's novels history comes alive..

Excellent.

The two main characters (Fiona & Ailean) are very well drawn on the page and the reader quickly becomes invested in them.

Both parts of this book (the "Ruin" and the "Redemption") were very moving - the ending to part 1 is very powerful indeed - however the aspect that was most gripping [to me] was the undeniable attraction between the two main characters, even when it was unwanted ("I want to hate ye, Ailean. Why don't I hate ye?").

The rugged setting [Mull in the 14th century] and fascinating supporting details [both the weaving culture and the village aspects of that time] really keep the reader embedded in the story.

Another excellent book from a first class author.

(I was fortunate to receive an ARC however the above is, as ever, my own opinion.)

Fiona Mackinnon is a talented weaver who has been commissioned by the Lairds wife to weave a large tapestry.
Aileen Maclean is the Lairds eldest son and is back from fighting the English. He is restless and doesn’t really know where he belongs at present. He is used to getting what he wants. - and he decides he wants Fiona.

This is set on the picturesque Isle of Mull and is brought to life by Jayne Castel. I like the way she describes the landscape and culture etc.

The plot is good and the characters well done.
This is an emotional story with many ups and downs along the way.
I felt the ending was a little rushed but that could be because I didn’t want the book to end yet.

Ruin & Redemption (Sons of Mull Book 2 by Jayne Castel is a wonderful Medieval Historical Romance. A stand alone. Well written with charming, well developed characters. Filled with drama, abuse, scandal, action, adventure, and intrigue. A reckless war hero and an accomplished weaver bring this story to life. Ms. Castel weaves history into this story with her knowledge of history, which shows. An edge of your seat drama. Highly recommended for fans of Medieval Historical Romance, Historical fiction, and awesome stories.

There is an old Scots-Irish saying here in the mountains of Carolina, In order to build something healthy and strong, it needs to be felled first. I always looked at my great grandmother with odd curiosity as a kid, but now, after some life behind me, I understand. Fiona and Ailean are great characters for the aptly named Ruin and Redemption! The theme of the story is as old as time, but the delivery is a fresh take and an adventurous one at that! Highly recommended read for those that love the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, and the Medieval romance they ooze.

I’m a sucker for Jayne Castel, and I loved Ruin & Redemption. I’m always a tiny bit weirded out by next-generation stories, but I put that aside for this series. Ruin & Redemption was super emotional for me for some reason, but I’m not mad about it. I loved Ailean and Fiona. I did think the chemistry was good, but their love wasn’t *quite* believable to me because they barely spent any time together. Lust, I could buy, but love was a harder sell. I’m looking forward to Greig’s story next!

I wasn't sure about Ailean when I first started this book, but by the end, I loved him! Fiona and Ailean have such fantastic chemistry, but he really had to work hard to prove himself worthy of her. While Ailean definitely made mistakes, he fought hard to rectify them and become a better man. Fiona really just needed someone to appreciate her and and I loved seeing her become more confident as her and Ailean's relatio ship developed. Another great installment in the series!.

This was a wonderfully written love story. The title is absolutely perfect for this book. Fiona and Ailean get carried away by attraction and lust and discover a lot about themselves and each other as they start life over.
This is a romantic Highlander romance without all the fighting and blood shed. Just a simple couple that navigate through heartbreak and life. This book does have some steamy scenes.
This book was a great addition to the series and I am looking forward to book three.

Oh boy! This is a goodie. It's one of those rare ones that grabs the reader at the beginning and you become so invested in the story, the atmosphere, the fate of the characters, that suddenly it's 2:00am and you have a grin as you finally turn out the light. The story is believable, a bit raw, and the characters remind you of people you know… good and bad. Give it a try. It's worth your time and you'll feel better about human nature at the end. And who doesn't need more of that these days! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A lovely story set on the Isle of Mull. With a lot of Scottish history and traditions. A humble weaver, Fiona, proves herself and is requested to make a tapestry for the MacLean clan. She meets Aileen, the clan-cheifs eldest son, who may end up derailing Fiona's plans. With the hierarchy in place in those times, Fiona knows where she stands and what will be excepted, but things change with time

The amount of second hand embarrassment I had in this book. Fiona seemed like such a badass character from the beginning of the book. She left her toxic family to get better opportunities for her career. All to fall in bed with the first pretty boy she sees. Not to mention her employers son 💀

Eyuckkk I’m out ✌️
