Where the Desert Glows

Rate this book
A raw, intimate MM romance set beneath wide desert skies, Where the Desert Glows is a story about loneliness, quiet devotion, and choosing each other when the world keeps asking you to disappear.

Skye
I’m good at taking up space. I stay loud, keep moving. Working at a veterinary clinic keeps me busy enough to avoid stillness. Stillness is dangerous, and the quiet lets things catch up to me.

Then a favor for my brother pulls me into the Mojave with his fellow mechanic and my good friend Darren, a quiet former Army medic who sees straight through my nerves.

We’re supposed to pick up custom-requested paint from a desert artist and head home. Instead, we stumble onto a sketchy shipment falsely tied to Phoenix Cycles, no cell signal, and a situation that spirals fast.

No matter what the desert throws at us, Darren doesn’t try to fix me or tell me I’m wrong. He just stays, solid and steady. Falling for him means stopping long enough to believe I'm not actually broken, and that realization might be the scariest thing of all.

Darren
I’ve spent my life holding broken things together. My love life. My professional life. Bodies. Motorcycles. Other people’s pain. I trust what’s solid, what can be carried, what can be endured without complaint.

Skye has been my good friend for a while now. Too nervous, too brazenly honest, too easy to care about if I let myself think about him too long. I’ve always told myself it was safer to keep a little distance between us. That's when a routine trip into the Mojave goes wrong.

The desert strips everything down to survival, and suddenly the things I’ve been avoiding matter less than the man standing beside me.

So cute, took me a bit to read it cause i was using it in between buddy reads. But this friends to lovers story was so adorably sweet, i loved the character growth for both the characters especially Skye. The way they comforted each other and looked to each other for acceptance was just 🥹🖤
Darren & Skye are on their way to pick up a special paint order in the desert when things take an unexpected turn trapping them in the desert together.

I dont want to give much away but it was definitely a good story with a wonderful happy ending.

My goodness, M. Anderson knows how to put you in your feels! Allow me to add more of the back list to my TBR!
Oh, sweet Skye & gentle, guarded Darren! These two tugged on my heart strings as individuals. Throw in some mutual want and pining & a little angst and they are so explosive, but in the quietest way ever.
This story was wild because, well, M. Anderson can write a dang story and make you feel like you are literally right there in the middle of it all! Heart pounding. But Skye & Darren patiently helping one another through their own mental struggles to find the spark within their obvious connection was the icing on the cake.

Be still my heart...
Oh my freaking gosh, this was everything i didn't know i needed. Such a beautiful love story and not at all what i expected in the best possible way. The forced proximity in the isolated desert setting was everything. With the most torturing slow-burn build-up that had me dying from swoon and amazing characters that couldn't be more opposite but were made for each other, i was melting from the heat.

Darren and Skye stole my heart. This was such a wild/intense ride. There was suspense mixed in this love story that kept me rivited right alongside the budding romance. It was honest and raw in a way that hit me harder than i could have anticipated. These characters are deep and complex and have me emotionally invested.

Skye and his rambling/inner monologue had me laughing out loud. Poor sweet walking disaster. The growth this character undergoes throughout the story was so satisfying to read.

Darren, this stoic wouded hero may be broken and flawed, but his healing journey felt hopeful.

I LOVED their dynamic. Their love is chaotic and messy, but its the best kind because it feels real. Their story is full of heart and healing.

M. Anderson truly did a phenomenal job writing about anxiety and PTSD.
Can i just also mention how much i love the cover art as well as all the art found on the author's Instagram?! Absolutely beautiful. I love it so much.

this. book. is. BEAUTIFUL.

this is the first book I’ve read by M. Anderson and i can tell you, it won’t be my last. I’ll be going back and reading the other books in this series for sure!

so, let’s talk.

the first thing that caught my eye with this book was the ART. im such an art girly and not only is the cover stunning, but the other few drawings of Darren and Skye in the book were so gooooood.

the majority of this book is set in the desert with the MCs doing a job for a motorcycle company that goes wrong. i felt like i was actually placed there, thanks to the amount of details the author gives throughout the book. speaking of details- ive never read a book where the intimate scenes were so.. just, breathtaking. it wasn’t all, “hey come here and lets bang.” you could FEEL the love between the MCs.

Darren and Skye’s story really pulled on my heartstrings. they both have dealt with some HEAVY stuff in life but the character growth (especially with Skye) is phenomenal. the portrayal of anxiety and PTSD in this book really had me in teaaars, not only because i can relate, but because the author really shows you how it effects life but also that it doesn’t have to be awful forever. there IS hope. 🤍 the interludes in the story really give good background to what the characters experienced before meeting each other and explains a bit of why they are the way they are.

if you’re into the following, Where the Desert Glows might be for you:

🏜️ hurt/comfort
🏜️ forced proximity
🏜️ slow burn
🏜️ friends to lovers
🏜️ hilarious idioms that are definitely wrong (ex. ‘don’t count your chickens before you’re strapped’)
🏜️ EDM music MC x country music MC
🏜️ RAVENS 🐦‍⬛

Obligatory “This is an ARC review!”

The first of M. Anderson’s books that I read was Run with the Devil (which, like Where the Desert Glows, is part of the Road to Us collection but all function as standalones), and I enjoyed it so much that when I heard she was writing a book centred on Darren, who played a major role in RwtD, I was SO hyped. Darren is portrayed as a “functional stoner,” who despite some of the implications is such an intelligent, brave and capable and stoic character. I loved all his scenes in RwtD and snapped up the opportunity to read Where the Desert Glows the moment M. opened her ARC applications.

And it did not disappoint! Darren’s quiet strength is featured alongside Skye, who is a great foil in that Skye is noisier, more outwardly anxious, and is still reeling from some recent trauma. I loved how they brought out the best in each other, grounded each other, and looked out for each other from start to finish. Their relationship felt realistic and well-paced, and so satisfying when they finally opened up to one another and became a couple <3

The desert setting is so well-written I could almost feel the oppressive heat and sun beating on the characters’ backs as they travel through the desert they become stranded in. What (pleasantly!) surprised me is that while this book is indeed a standalone, it re-opened the can of worms that I thought was closed in RwtD, which ties into the main plot without making things confusing for new readers.

And the bonus chapter at the end? M. Anderson, how did you know that was what we wanted?! I’m already itching to sign up for the next ARC when she publishes again!

Thank you once again M. for the opportunity to read this beautiful book before its publication! I can't wait for the next one!

M. Anderson is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors 😭😭

I looooove her style. The more I read, the more I understand and enjoy her work. I love how well balanced the angst and the affectionate moments are, and how loving yet complex the characters feel. The descriptions are also so clear and vivid!

I first noticed this in Snow for the Holidays (I absolutely loved that book), with how perfectly it captured the Christmassy, wintry vibes. The same happened in this book. I could literally feel the heat of the desert, the sand, and the exhaustion the characters were experiencing. It added so much to their sense of overwhelm and made everything feel even more real.

Skye and Darren were amazing. Darren was so grounding, smart, and protective, while Skye was talkative, adorable, and thoughtful. I laughed so much at Skye’s awkwardness whenever he tried to talk to Darren at first lol His crush was so obvious, and he was so nervous, but he was the cutest 😂 They were absolutely adorable together.

My heart broke several times when I learned about some of the traumatic events they went through, but it also made me so proud of them whenever they overcame those challenges and kept moving forward. They truly brought out the best in each other and proved to be exactly the companion the other needed to walk through life together.

I can’t say enough good things about it. They both showed incredible strength and resilience, which was simply beautiful to read. I loved everything about this :')

Where the Desert Glows by M. Anderson

Thank you to M. Anderson for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was emotional, sweet, and addictive and kept me hooked from page 1 to the very end. The romance between Darren and Skye had great chemistry, and I especially loved watching Darren overcome his internal issues and be able to live his life. Watching their friendship bloom into more was truly special.

Darren and Skye felt well developed, fun, and quirky. The pacing was just right. It moved smoothly throughout the whole book. The details of the spicy scenes were top tier. I have read very few books where, as the reader, you could feel the characters feelings for each other.

Majority of this book took place in the deserts. The detail M. Anderson used to describe the scenery makes you feel immersed into this desert with them.

If you love forced proximity, friends to lovers, suspense, and mental health representation, then this is the book for you. You will fall in love with Darren and Skye.

Where the Desert Glows – M. Anderson (ARC Review)

This is my first book by this author. If you’re after complex characters, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, a neurodivergent MMC, and a delicious slow burn, then this book is for you.

Set against the beautiful yet unforgiving backdrop of the Mojave Desert, Darren and Skye’s story sizzles and burns brightly before building to an action-packed crescendo.

The book tackles some heavy themes, including domestic abuse, parental abandonment, PTSD, and near-death experiences, making it a pretty raw and emotional read at times.

It’s a fast-paced story with a lot of internal monologue, but I genuinely loved Darren and Skye’s connection. Their relationship development felt natural, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying.

Overall, an intense, emotional, and engaging read.

The story kept me on the edge of my seat, from start to finish.
The desert setting added such a great sense of danger and isolation, which made their journey feel really intense. And although with them having to escape and run the pacing was beautifully balanced so their relationship felt organic while it grew.

I think I would have loved to know more about what happened after they got home. Both men clearly face their inner demons while being stuck together and I crave to see, how they recovered and settled into life together, but the ending still worked and didn’t leave me frustrated.

Overall, it’s a thrilling, heartfelt MM romance that I’d definitely recommend if you like your love stories with a side of suspense.

I really enjoyed my first M. Anderson book, despite it being the 5th in a series I will absolutely go back and read!

The story focuses on Darren, a motorcycle mechanic at the same shop I suspect most of the other books are based at, too. He is an ex-Army medic and is working through a lot of the trauma that his experience brought. He is friends with Skye, the sweet brother of another mechanic. Due to a series of unfortunate events, they end up in the road together in the Mojave desert. Things get more and more complicated, but through that, Darren and Skye discover more about each other and the power of their partnership.

Thank you to the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

This was my first book from M. Anderson, and I have to say, it was a bit of a slow start for me. But once the characters got stranded in the desert and found themselves in a dangerous situation, I was completely hooked. The slow burn romance is done so well, with lots of internal monologue and the writing is just so beautiful, painting the desert and the tension in such vivid, emotional detail.
Although, I did wish there was a bit more about what happened when they returned home and their life after.

Where the Desert Glows is evocative and atmospheric. It's a deep character study with a coherent and well-developed understanding of each character's psychology and how they would work together. The first few chapters left my chest aching and my throat tight, in the very best way. Em can clearly write -- her prose is top notch with super effective use of imagery and striking turns of phrase. While this can be read as a standalone (which I did), I think it would probably be more effective to read the entire series: I felt like I missed some of the groundwork for Skye and Darren. Absolutely recommended!

Darren and skye's journey to wholeness is a raw and vivid one, layered expertly within a suspenseful and thrilling plot line. The tension throughout was tangible.

What a magnificent healing journey between two broken and flawed people.

The way this author uses prose to make the words come alive off the page is tremendous.

I highly recommend this book. I haven't read anything by this author I would not recommend

Where the Desert Glows is a heartfelt and emotionally layered continuation of the series, blending grit with tenderness in a way that feels both raw and hopeful. In this fifth instalment, Anderson delves deep into the quiet battles her characters carry, reminding us that even the harshest landscapes can hold light.

Darren is a standout here, his struggles have hardened him, but they’ve never quite managed to extinguish his decency. Watching that buried goodness slowly surface is one of the novel’s most rewarding elements.

Skye’s journey is equally compelling. His previous relationship has left him emotionally scarred, cautious and guarded. Anderson handles his vulnerability with care, allowing readers to see both the damage and the resilience.

This story is about healing, about how love doesn’t arrive wrapped in a bow, but finds its way through fear, doubt and old wounds. Where the Desert Glows beautifully reinforces the idea that no matter how difficult the past, love always finds a way to break through the darkness.
