Choose Hard, Live Easy — The Art of War for Decision-Making: Command Decisions with Clarity, Confidence, and Power — And Live Like a King Who Conquered

Rate this book
YOUR LIFE IS NOT AN ACCIDENT. IT’S A CASUALTY, OR A CONQUEST.
If you suck at making decisions, your life will suck too.

It’s time to stop waiting for the world to "conspire" in your favor. The world doesn’t care about your vision board, your pronouns, your deadbeat dad, or your PhD in Philosophy. It cares about one The decisions you make every moment of the day—from what you eat for breakfast to how you spend your free time.

The fact is, most people are prisoners of their own choosing, led into a cage by the siren song of "Easy." It is a paradoxical trap built on the promises of scripted shortcuts, feral self-talk, and a velvety-soft avoidance of anything remotely discomforting.

You choose the easy path today, only to wonder why your life is so damn hard tomorrow.

Every day, a war is being waged against you, and its primary weapon is a narcotic called "Easy.” The battlefield is "the moment"—the origin of every choice you make. One army fights for “Worst You” and your impulse to stay compliant and comfortable. The other army fights for “Best You” and your discipline to choose the difficult, the decisive, and the definitive.

Fail to fight this war and it will seduce you into a life of quiet debt, depression, and disease. But there is a hidden paradox governing this war, and mastering it is your only way out of this

— Choose You're punished with persistent HARDSHIP.
— Choose You're rewarded with persistent EASE.

Ignore this paradox and suffer a hard life fit for a prisoner. Master it and win a gilded life fit for a king.
THE ART OF WAR FOR THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL YOU WERE NEVER GIVEN
Life didn’t come with an instruction manual on how to make great decisions—so MJ DeMarco wrote it.

This isn't a lecture from an Ivy League professor in an ugly sweater vest; it’s a battle-tested framework that cuts through your decision fog like an F5 tornado in a trailer park.

In Choose Hard, Live Easy,MJ DeMarco strips away the syrupy delusions of modern "self-help" to reveal the raw mechanics of how an amazing life is actually engineered. Most decision-making books are like bringing chopsticks to a gunfight. They get lost in academic minutiae so dense it could bore you to tears, or they list 47 "cognitive biases" you'll forget the second life punches you with a layoff or a cheating lover.

Do you really need to hear about the Marshmallow Experiment for the 80th time? You don’t.

You need a weapon of mass instruction. Using the raw insight that defined The Millionaire Fastlane and Unscripted, you will
The 4 Rules of Simple rules to win half your decision battles before they begin. The Comfort Zone Why the concept of a "comfort zone" is actually misleading and the key to living Easy. The Toyota How a simple manufacturing hack granted DeMarco a free $1.8M mortgage—and how you can apply the same logic. — The 5 Laws of Decision How to recon the decision battlefield so every choice is made with clarity and confidence.

MJ DeMarco is a semi-retired entrepreneur, investor, advisor, and international best-selling author who’s books have been translated in over 15 languages worldwide. He is the current founder of Viperion Publishing Corp., a media company focused on online and print content distribution. He also is admin/founder for The Fastlane Forum, the web’s leading destination forum for start-up, finance, and entrepreneurial business discussions.

Prior to embarking into the world of writing and authorship, he was the former start-up Founder/CEO of Limos.com (1997-2007), a global ground transportation aggregator and marketplace that he successfully built and grew into a profitable multi-million dollar company, all with no money, no formal training, and with just a few employees. In 2001, he sold the company in an exit event but later reacquired the company via bankruptcy reorganization. He later sold the company again in 2007 to a Phoenix-based private equity company.

By refusing to accept society's default template for mediocrity (THE SCRIPT: jobs, 401(k)s, frugality, give your life savings to Wall-Street) MJ was able to retire young in his thirties without sacrificing the good life. Yes, that means he isn’t playing Wall-Street's “hope, wait, and pray” game where you nervously invest all your savings into the stock market, all while commiserating over the Starbucks you couldn’t drink because saving $4.12 was more important. (Do people seriously believe that sh*t?)

Currently, MJ owns a publishing company which produces, distributes, and licenses his work around the world while contributing daily to TheFastlaneForum.com: an entrepreneurial community featuring over 40,000 entrepreneurs. He lives in Scottsdale Arizona and enjoys road trips, softball, travel, fitness and nutrition, working out, and recklessly exploring the Sonoran desert on his UTV.

Absolutely horrible. Almost reads like chatgpt wrote the entire thing and the graphics. Completely devoid of new ideas. Honestly completely disappointed considering this is the same guy from the millionaire fastlane.

The premise is simple. When faced with a decision choose the hard answer every time. It was a loooong read to reiterate that lesson. I absolutely loved MJ Marco previous books and I’ve read them over and over and bought them for my sons. Fast lane millionaire is a classic and as relevant today as it was when it was launched. This one is a tough read.

The latest book by MJ Demarco and it is another fantastic read. I wholeheartedly recommend Choose Hard, Live Easy to anyone serious about maximising your potential in the life you have been gifted. MJ doesn't hold back, he will confront you with some honest truths and force some serious internal reflection. If implemented the guidance and advice in this book will have a life changing impact on many levels. This is a read not to be missed. Buy and reap the rewards of hard!

I love all these books, but this one truly resonated with me. It’s a valuable lesson, but the way he narrates the story, from pop culture references to using actual examples from his life that I can relate to, is exceptional. Choosing hard! That’s your life!

TLDR; Good book if you want to compile the best books on discipline into one book. However, the last 2 chapters can be skipped.

I found this book to be very interesting and well made for the first ≈400 pages. It is close to a compilation of the best books on discipline, mindset and life values but in the form of one book. The military terminology also provides a better intuition, but I might be biased due to previous military experience. It's quite beautiful how balanced life is, there aren't many options where you can make an easy choice today and not live to experience the hardship that follows. It is a concept that most of society should understand, but unfortunately, those who need it the most are not the ones who will read this book.

Although it started off well, after roughly the first 400 pages, the quality declined sharply. From being a book about how to make the best of your life to short rants with no clear connection between each other. It felt like the information was not really necessary but rather short stories to DeMarco's life values. Perhaps I just didn't understand what information was intended to be distributed through the last 2 chapters.

Would have given 4 stars if the last 2 chapters weren't included.

In Choose Hard, Live Easy, MJ DeMarco delivers a tactical, "tough love" masterpiece that exposes the paradoxical trap of modern comfort. By stripping away academic fluff and focusing on the raw mechanics of "Decision-Combat," DeMarco proves that an extraordinary life isn't an accident, it’s an engineered conquest. It is a bracing, high-octane manual for anyone ready to stop being a casualty of their own impulses and start making the definitive choices required to live like a king.

Another hard hitting book to awaken us to reality

MJ is like that older brother, smacking you across the face to awaken you from the delusion and face the reality that if we choose easy, we're going to have to live hard, and that by intentionally choosing hard, we're better placed (and more likely) to live easy.

Thanks MJ.

I gave this book a 4 instead of a 5 because I don't like made up words - ya ya - I know they were all made up at some point - nevertheless it's a particular pet peeve of mine. So I don't like the delivery but the message is worth reading again and again.

If you're looking for clear take-aways that you can apply now, read it. If you're not happy with your results in life -

I feel called out

The book is a great wake up call for anyone struggling to achieve their goals. It forces you to take accountability and see through your own BS.
