Born of Rage: Untamed Spirit

Rate this book
A bloodthirsty killer stalks the streets of San Francisco, a madman who believes he is the dark angel of death, responsible for dispatching the not-so-innocent souls of men from the face of the earth to the underworld. An unscrupulous doctor is performing macabre experiments with body tissue stolen from condemned serial killers, using unsuspecting women as breeding grounds for a new generation of killers. An intelligent and beautiful private investigator is in search of a psychiatrist friend’s missing patient, while at the same time a hardened copy is searching for an elusive killer in his beleaguered city. What they do not realize is that they are seeking the same man, until it is almost too late. With well-developed characters, a realistic and frightening plot, and heart-pounding suspense, Robert Goodman explodes on the scene as a fresh voice in the crime thriller genre, setting a whole new standard with Born of Untamed Spirit.

Born Of Rage has the potential to be a spine-tingling thriller. Unfortunately, for me it fell short. The entire book is written from a narrator’s perspective, in an omniscient point of view. Consequently, the reader is never pulled completely into the story. It’s more like we’re sitting across the table from a friend who is reciting a tale he or she heard about. We are always an arm’s length from the emotion.

The plot is captivating. We have a psycho serial killer with a twisted back story, the psychiatrist who wants to help him, a P.I. looking for him, and cops with no clues. The characters, however, remain two-dimensional and I never truly connected with any of them. I like to get lost in a story, to feel like the characters are real and to care what happens. Born Of Rage, it was more like a good campfire story than a book to get lost in.
