What a sweet and heartfelt contemporary romance. The unique story stands out for its exploration of not just one romance but several that define the protagonist's life. The author does an incredible job of balancing that feeling of a rom-com with more nuanced, emotional story development that explores both the emotional toll of looking for love and the need to find a sense of self in an often overwhelming world. The shifting chapters that explore a world in which the protagonist made one choice over another were an inspired choice, and allowed the reader to really connect to the cast of characters.
For it was the characters themselves that really made the story what it was. Not only did readers experience the inner dialogue and emotional depth of Chloe's experiences, but they also saw how both her career and her family impacted them. The struggles of her relationship with her parents, especially her mother, whose old school way of looking at things made her earliest decisions on her respective partners difficult to navigate, to the need to understand who she was outside of these relationships and how her career path dictated who she would surround herself with kept the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat with each passing chapter.
The Verdict
Heartfelt, charming, and entertaining, author Maria Jane’s "Perfect" is a must-read contemporary romance meets rom-com novel. The twists and turns in Chloe's romantic life, the heartening and heartbreaking moments, the deep emotional relationships she formed along the way, and the shocking conclusion to her journey will keep readers enthralled by each chapter's revelations.
Maria Jane’s novel Perfect follows the emotional journey of Chloe Hahn Pham, a college student who believes her life path is already mapped out with her long-time boyfriend, Adam. Their relationship appears stable and loving, but distance, personal ambitions, and the realities of growing up begin to challenge what once felt certain. When Chloe meets Isaac, a confident and ambitious basketball player, she finds herself confronting questions about independence, identity, and what she truly wants from her future.
Chloe’s internal struggle between loyalty to Adam and her growing attraction to Isaac feels genuine and relatable. Rather than presenting simple choices, the novel explores how relationships evolve when personal goals and values begin to diverge.
Maria Jane has done an amazing job in this book. The book is well paced and I couldn't put it down until I finished reading it. Readers who enjoy contemporary romance with themes of personal growth, difficult decisions, etc will likely find Chloe’s story worth reading.
Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. Chloe is a multi talented character that has landed her a position of VP at a major fashion design company after graduating from schooling in France. She still has a down home attitude which leads to several tries in the romance field which are sometimes humorous, unpredictable and leading us to think it’s perfect. Until it’s not. They say try, try again. So while we follow her adventures in the professional field we also find ourself alongside her life as she hangs with her friends, her job and the first inkling that she may have found Mr. Right. Lighthearted and fast paced, each section of the story builds a new beginning, a few times. But near the end, is it possible that an accidental encounter is the opening for a forever love? I loved following her during these ups and downs with the ending leaving me full of warmth and happiness.
I loved the story, Chloe's life involved so many ups and downs. The only thing I found a little confusing at first was each "Part" backed the story up and then either had her make a different decision or a have something happen that rerouted her love story. It almost felt like a choose your own adventure book. That being said, each of these alternate routes does give the reader answers to 'what if she chose this instead' and added to the story with the final chapter letting the reader decide which timeline it went with.
