Whew okay this was for sure a wild ride that I actually really enjoyed and I cannot wait to see where it takes us in the next books. First off I do agree in the beginning there could be more world building or more background just a smidge to help understand some things better but I was able to follow along and some things were answered along the way but some better clarity in the beginning would of helped but that did not deter me. Now lemme just say Orion that little 3 year old firecracker had me cracking up especially when he met nixk and they interacted the first few times the comments to him about big things when making a bridge had me laughing so hard; I just absolutely love Orion he’s such a cute spitfire I love him so much. Nixk is a hot mess express oh my lord the way I have a love/hate relationship with the man. One sir you were blind for sure but yes that could have magic in play as some things were revealed at the end, but my goodness his hot and cold attitude he needs a lesson in how to show his love better and not act out. I’m all for being obsessed but sir you can’t just expect her to fall in line with your insane stipulations especially still at the end, like did Mr. Red situation not teach you anything?!! Luna my girl yassss. I love her she is amazing. She is a baddie. She stands up for herself especially with nixk and knows her worth and I love that she doesn’t just settle for the role he wants to give her, she fights for her place and role as she should she deserves everything not to be a hidden secret or incubator. She loves Orion fiercely and oh my gosh that reveal at the end with the papers and all I was not expecting that I was like oh my gosh!! Cass love him. And I love siriana she’s so protective of Luna not just out of “I have to be cuz I was assigned.” But because she wanted to be and I love that Luna has her. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to dive into the next one. Nixk better get his stuff together. Rhea&mary just absolutely not. Ugh. And can’t wait to see Luna be more of a baddie and put people in their place. Highly recommend. 🥰

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (Slow burn with plenty of tension.)

I don’t even know where to begin because I spent this entire book with emotional whiplash…and somehow loved every second of it.

I was hooked from the prologue. One quote from Prince Nixk and I was completely done for.

I don’t usually fall for insta love or insta mates, but this didn’t feel like that. It felt like certainty. The way Nixk spoke about Luna had me invested before chapter one even started. I knew I was in trouble.

Then the story proceeded to emotionally abuse me for the next 300+ pages. 😂

For years, Luna has built a life away from the fae realm after being rejected by the people who should have protected her. She returns for one reason only, to meet her dying birth father, only to be thrown back into the orbit of the prince who shattered her heart.

And let me tell you…

Prince Nixk had me wanting to both hug him and throw him off the nearest cliff.

One minute this man is publicly claiming Orion as his son without hesitation, arranging the best healers for Luna’s father, protecting everyone she loves, and looking at her like she’s still the center of his universe.

The next minute he’s cold, secretive, hiding behind politics, refusing to answer her questions, and saying things that had me yelling at my Kindle.

SIR. USE. YOUR. WORDS.

I never questioned whether Nixk loved Luna. Not once. I questioned why this man insisted on communicating through cryptic half truths, political obligations, and self sabotage instead of simply telling her what was going on. His actions constantly screamed one thing while his words said another, and it absolutely drove me insane…but it also kept me turning the pages because I knew there had to be more beneath the surface.

Luna was exactly the heroine I wanted her to be. She didn’t let chemistry erase years of hurt. She stood her ground, asked the hard questions, and refused to settle for half truths or pretty promises. She made Nixk work for every ounce of her trust, and honestly…he deserved it.

And Orion?

Protect that precious little boy at all costs.

Watching Nixk immediately step into fatherhood was one of my favorite parts of this book. Every scene between them melted my heart, and the second anyone even hinted at threatening Orion, Nixk became absolutely feral. Those protective moments were some of my favorites.

Can we also talk about Rhea?

Because I have never wanted to fight a fictional woman so fast. 🤺

She’s tied to Nixk through a political alliance and an ironclad contract that forces their engagement, and every time she walked into a room I physically cringed. She hangs all over him, acts like she owns him, and somehow manages to make every scene she’s in worse. Thankfully, Nixk never once reciprocated her behavior. In fact, every chance he got, he reminded her exactly where the boundaries of their contract were. And the second she threatened Luna or dared to speak about Orion, he shut her down immediately. That man does not mess around when it comes to protecting his family, and I loved every single one of those moments.

The beginning took me a little while to settle into because there is a lot happening, and I occasionally wished for a bit more explanation of the world earlier on. Once everything started clicking into place, though, I absolutely flew through it. I spent my entire day reading because I genuinely could not put it down.

The twists completely changed how I viewed everything, and somehow I finished this book with even more questions than I started with. There are still so many secrets surrounding Luna, Nixk, Orion, the realm, and everything that happened years ago that I am fully invested in seeing where this story goes.

And then…

THAT ENDING.

The appearance of the Red Fae had me staring at my Kindle like…

…what the actual fuck is going on?! 🤯

I won’t spoil anything because everyone deserves to experience that moment blind, but holy crap. I closed this book with approximately 437 questions and exactly zero patience to wait for book two.

Her devotion to her son and her drive to fight for what is right makes her a fierce, commendable heroine.

​Nixk, meanwhile, functions as a classic morally grey hero. He is frequently infuriating and hot-and-cold, constantly retreating behind formal agreements instead of embracing emotional honesty.

While this dynamic caused some frustration due to the characters' lack of communication and quick tempers, the story rewards your patience as the final act effectively contextualizes their volatile behavior.

I also appreciated that Mason included character name pronunciations, which was a helpful addition for the reader.

​The supporting cast also made an impact, particularly the antagonists Mary and Rhea, whose malevolence was so effectively written that I found myself actively rooting for their eventual undoing.

The plotting is dense and mysterious, and the final twist was genuinely unexpected, providing an effective hook for the next book.

​Several loose ends remain, specifically regarding the true intentions of the Red Fae and the extent of their involvement in the unfolding scheme.

I am fully invested in seeing how the plot—and the volatile relationship between Luna and Nixk—continues to progress.

​Ultimately, despite a slightly challenging start, this is a gripping, high-tension story that demands a follow-up.

Luna Ashbury is immediately rooted for. After being cast aside by her own people and fleeing a life of cruelty, she has finally built a fragile peace for herself. Her return to the fae realm is meant to be brief, a final chance to meet the father she never knew. Instead, it becomes the catalyst for a collision with the past she’s spent years trying to escape.

And that collision comes in the form of Prince Nik Alric.

I’m so grateful to author Sammi Mason for gifting me the opportunity to read the advance copy of Court of Sacrifice and Curses (Ruined Realm of Shadow #1). This is my first time reading her work, and I truly enjoyed it.
What first drew me to this book was the beautiful cover—it’s absolutely stunning. But from page one, I was completely hooked. This dark fantasy romance pulled me in right from the start and didn’t let go.
The story follows Luna Ashbury, a strong and defiant fae who has always been seen as a lowborn nobody in the fae realm. After escaping a painful past, she builds a quiet life with her son far from that world. But everything changes when she is forced to return to the fae realm to meet her dying father—the father she has never known—and to face the one person she never wanted to see again… Prince Nixk.
Prince Nixk is the ultimate morally grey prince. He never got over losing Luna, and now discovering he has a son changes everything. He is powerful, intense, and dangerously ruthless—the kind of man who doesn’t ask, he takes. As the Sovereign Heir, he is driven by duty and control, cold and commanding, and at times completely unhinged. A Court of Sacrifice and Curses was a deliciously dramatic romantasy read filled with fae politics, dangerous bargains, old wounds, and the kind of tension that keeps you saying “just one more chapter” while knowing full well it is a trap.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this story. The world has that dark, enchanting fae feeling where every promise comes with a hidden blade and every character seems to have secrets tucked away in their sleeves. The magic, court intrigue, and emotional stakes kept me invested throughout.

Luna was a strong heroine with a lot of resilience, and I loved watching her navigate a world that had already taken so much from her. Nixk is the type of morally gray character who will have you questioning whether you want to throw something at him or see what terrible, complicated choice he makes next. Naturally, romantasy men continue their lifelong tradition of needing therapy but instead choosing dramatic entrances and questionable decisions.

The romance had plenty of tension and emotional conflict, though some moments of miscommunication tested my patience. Still, the chemistry, secrets, and slow unraveling of the characters’ pasts kept me turning pages.

Overall, this was an enjoyable fae romance with a good balance of danger, heartbreak, magic, and hope. If you enjoy enemies-to-lovers vibes, morally gray fae, and characters who have to fight their way through both kingdoms and feelings, this one is worth adding to your TBR.

From the start of the book, you are drawn in and can’t put it down. Each page gives you more hints about the secrets in the story. This book has a strong, well-developed and an interesting story line with twists and unexpected turns that keep you reading and turning the pages. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. Amazing world building that is detailed and imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other. Strong, interesting, and fascinating characters that are well developed and diverse. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with curses, secrets, danger, politics, intrigue, and subterfuge. The plot thickens, the suspense builds, and the passion erupts! I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. This has been my firts foray into dark fantasy - and it's a 3.5 read for me.

Luna fought every day of her life - againts odds, against magic, against her own family. And love. Because her hear has chosen Nixk - the prince of the realm.

I have mixed feelings about this story, but it might be just the fact, that I'm new to the genre - Luna and Nixk fight seemingly about everything - they claim love for each other, but can't seem to communicate until the very end of the book, and even then, the communication does not resolve their conflict.
In this story/realm almost every transgression can be punished by death - so the threat for telling the truth feels grave. But I couldn't shake the feeling that everything and nothing all at once was exagerated. The conflict between the main characters, the crisis in the realm, Nixk's position in the court.
As this is a start of a series, more can be revealed in the next book, but if that is so, this could have been slimmed down when it comes to the amount of conflict, or planned differently.

I, like others was a little confused at the beginning and thought maybe I started in a sequel. I would have loved some world building or some flashbacks to understand better. I do love that Luna stands her ground and fights for what is right and for her son. I did have quite a few unanswered questions that I hope will be resolved in the next book. I really like Nixk but he is so hot and cold that he gives me whiplash. I hate how he always goes back to a contract and can’t see that all Luna wants is his confession of love without documents. I have faith though that he will get his crap together because towards the end it gives me hope! I loved Orion and how both will go however far to keep him safe. I detest Mary and Rhea and hope he is able to sever ties or they just die. Sorry not sorry about my wishes for them. I am curious what else happens with the Red Fae and how he is involved in all this. I am looking forward to the next book to see how it all evolves especially with Luna and her powers plus her relationship with Nixk.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy for the author Sammi Mason and have enjoyed reading this new high paced fantacy series set within the fae and human realms.

The book is dual POV, switching between the two main characters, although the story is predominantly told through Luna's narrative, but some more of Nixk's POV wpuld be good to read to get to know his story and ideas behind ruling the realm come from.

The book is fast paced from the start, leaving out some key world building elements, although some of this gets filled in as the story moves forward and hidden secrets are revealed.

I loved Luna and how she fought for everything she wanted throughout the story. I found her back story interesting (although I would have liked to know more about her past), but am hoping more will be revealed in the sequel.

The plot twist as the end I did not see coming however and has definitely left me intrigued for book 2!

Only a few pages in, I had to double-check that I hadn't accidentally started with a sequel. I would have appreciated a bit more worldbuilding at the beginning, but once the story got going, it was a fast-paced ride full of twists, secrets, and betrayals.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions by the end, so I'll definitely have to pick up the sequel. I especially liked that Luna fought so hard for the most important parts of her life, refusing to give up, rely on anybody else and resisting to simply succumb to the allure of Nixk (still not entirely sure how to pronounce that…) or the pull of a mate bond.

Orion is cute as a button, and as for Rhea and Mary… I sincerely hope they go up in flames soon.

Court of Sacrifice and Curses completely hooked me from the start. This was one of those books that kept me up way too late because I couldn't stop turning the pages.

The story delivered on every trope it promised—enemies-to-lovers, secret child, forced proximity, second chance romance, and a morally grey prince who had me swooning and frustrated in equal measure. The slow burn was packed with tension, yearning, and emotional depth, while the mystery and plot twists kept me guessing until the very end.

I loved Luna, the high stakes, and the complex relationship between her and Nixk. Every reveal raised the tension, and I was fully invested in both the romance and the larger story unfolding around them. This book was incredible, nail-biting, and impossible to put down. I already need The Crown of Shackles and Cruelty because that ending left me desperate for more.

This was a solid start to a new series. Like other readers, I found myself a bit lost initially due to a lack of immediate world-building; it felt like being thrown straight into the fray without much context. However, once the plot got moving, the pacing improved. There were still some inconsistent transitions between chapters—some picked up right where the last left off, while others jumped forward in time without warning or explanation, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. That said, the overall plotline was highly intriguing, and I look forward to seeing how everything plays out in the next installment.

This book had my head reeling. The twist at the end was great, I didn't see it coming, although if you really think about it, it was hinted at.
I enjoyed how Luna tried her utter best to resist Nixk. I do want to give Nixt a smack against the head though - for his attitude and being a royal dumb ass at times.
I love how this isn't your typical "mates meet and have a few hiccups and then live happily ever after" story. The main characters have a lot of issues to work through and I like that. Its not all moonshine and roses.
There was a few sections that had me a little confused, where I wasn't sure if it was things from the past or current events. I think a clearer distinction would have helped.
Its definitely one to read if you like fantasy, fae, secrets uncovered, forbidden romance, not quite enemies to lovers and a lot of internal conflict.

The characters were very complex and complicated and compelling. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was excellent and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

I liked the plot and could defiantly see the potential. More is revealed at the end of the book which explains some misunderstandings. I didn’t really click with the characters in the end, and for me personally, there was too much around the child and his love of trains and swimming. I preferred reading the MMC POV chapters to the FMC. It picked up pace towards the end, so it might be the case that book 2 is better than book 1. Overall, I don’t think I was the target audience for this book.

This book was excellent! I love that the FMC never let the MMC take away her fire or values. I’m really happy how the author left more than enough room for a sequel.

This book is a must read. While it’s fantasy, the twists are amazing and really it’s just the beginning for these characters. I love that even though certain conflicts were cleared up, the FMC is not holding back from what she true wants. I need the next book now!

This book jumps straight into the action from the start which to be honest I enjoyed and I had this book read in just 2 days. The dual point of view story telling between Luna and Nikx was well written with twists and turns and I just love little Orion's character. It was refreshing to see a FMC that doesn't loose her fire during the story.

I am looking forward to the story continuing in Book 2.

The emotions the FMC goes through in this book and the turmoil she is put through is heart breaking. Every time you turn around she is put through more. But as a mom to a four year old, kids are not that well behaved. So I felt like he just wasn’t a realistically written character. But the others were wonderfully written. This story had a beautiful depth to it as well. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Wow this story was utterly amazing. I devoured it! Poor Luna (FMC) all she wanted was to be loved and to fit in..and our Nixk (MMC) was the Sovereign only really caring about taking care of his realm..it seemed to me he thought there was no room for love..and wow the twists and turns in this book! I cannot wait to read the next one!

in enjoyed this book Luna runs from her home since she is mistreated but end up back and runs in Prince Nixk and others. in a quick decision take it upon himself to claim luna son orion and luna as his to procted them. his differently give dangerous cinnamon roll but they do seem to fight eachother about everything and i get why but i enjoy it. if you like fae romanice secret child fateed mates this for you. i know they say this enemies to lovers but i dont think so

If you like fae you will like this book. Luna is a branded fae due to her hair, markings, and family. The prince who loves her and thinks he knows Luna, might not truly understand what is going on in his own kingdom. But things aren’t always what they seem in the fae court. Manipulation is high and so are the lies.

Do I recommend the book? Yes. Was I a fan of the characters? Yes absolutely. I really like everything in this book.

This story left me with so many questions, and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this trilogy. I felt like this book is the background information for the next story and is going to buildup to something amazing. My heart hurts for Luna and the way she has been treated. I slightly dislike Nixk, and hope he redeems himself in book 2.
