The Second Death

Rate this book
Brintis Downs buried his wife six months ago.

He watched the coffin lowered. He stood over the grave. He learned how to survive the silence she left behind.

Then the government called.

Terrica has been reintegrated—brought back through a federal program that promises restoration, memory continuity, and a second chance for families devastated by the Ashwood Virus. She looks the same. She remembers their life. She breathes, laughs, and holds his hand.

But something is wrong.

As Terrica begins to experience blackouts, memory fractures, and moments of terrifying absence, Brintis realizes reintegration comes with a cost no one is willing to name. The doctors downplay it. The media celebrates miracles. Support groups whisper about disappearances.

And the people who ask too many questions tend to vanish.

A chilling prequel to Zombies Anonymous, The Second Death is a psychological horror novella about grief, love, and what happens when systems decide who gets to stay human—and who doesn’t.

I’ve read Ms. Green before. This was a quick novella she had…and since I love Zombies, figured I’d keep it going with this.
I decided to try the audio. It was a male voice, and was very hard to follow. However, found out it was a “virtual” voice, and now it makes sense. Imagine someone reading something to you at a Johnny-one-note pace. No breaks, no rhythm, just straight up reading it as is.
It lost me a few times in the story, but ultimately I got the jist of it. I may revisit and read it myself someday.
Overall, story gets a 3, but would’ve been more with a better audio version. 🤷‍♀️
