It was decided many years ago that Solani would not inherit her father’s throne. Not when the blood of her shunned mother flowed through her veins. For on that day they buried the queen deep within the ground, the shamans found her unworthy of an afterlife. An ancient relic now weighs Solani’s soul, a golden scale that measures the depth of her darkness. If she fulfills her purpose, the scale will balance, and the council will no longer deem her a risk to the earth kingdom’s legacy. She must obey in hopes that one day she will gain her freedom, including participating in the ruthless, magicless trials in the Inbetween. Within these trials dwell otherworldly monsters, yet the participants prove just as deadly. Especially Solani’s rival, Niko Vasco of the water kingdom. This year, the shamans believe that if she wins the trial, her scale will finally balance. What Solani didn’t expect was fate forcing the two to fight side by side against the true evil at work within the Inbetween. Now she must choose to follow her purpose and save herself, or defy it to save everyone in Bonda.
I missed Daya, and I'm so happy to have Solani to fill the void.
More men need to be stabbed when they're being annoying. Solani is out here doing the lord's work!
I loved that you can definitely read this on it's own, but if you've read Daya's story, you get to catch all sorts of fun little easter eggs and feel like Steve Rogers understanding a reference for the first time. That's my favorite way to read, if I'm being honest. So a reread of the first two books isn't necessary, but can make for an extra fun experience!
And, uh. If you're an eldest daughter brace yourself, because Solani's constant struggle to take care of everyone and everything around her, totally on her own, at the detriment of herself is going to feel TOO REAL. Like, so real I started feeling personally attacked. Family is complicated, y'all. Especially when yours lies to you about key things.
Plus, you know, adorable wyverns who are good judges of character and just want to fly and get belly rubs!! And, you know. Niko. He's alright for a man, I guess. Especially after being stabbed. (JK I love him. Even though he's a man)
LOVED this book. If you LOVE a deadly trials book with TRUE enemies to lovers, forced proximity, banter, yearning, and a nice dose of feminie rage - this is it. The way this book ended, give me the next book ASAP, I was literally flipping back and forth between the last page and the epilogue over and over thinking I missed something.
Solani is such a bad ass, she hits all my favorite spots. Solani is witty and strong, she has been hit with a cruel and unfair hand in life, but takes it on the chin of the most part and the feminine rage honey. The way you cannot fuck with someone Solani loves because she will put you in the ground.
Khaya may have been my favorite person in the story, I saw so much of myself in her. The nosey and witty best friend that takes no shit and adjusts to her surroundings. LOVE HER, need a full duology on her ASAP. Would absolutely eat that shit up.
And saving that fine ass MMC for last, Niko baby. The things I would do to this man. He has definitely just put a wrench in my top book hubs list. The way this man yearns, the way he uses his words. LOVED it.
Mikayla, I cannot wait to read more from you. THANK YOU for allowing me to be apart of your ARC team.
I knew from CHAPTER ONE that this was going to be a 6-star read and I was RIGHT. Honestly it probably goes to ♾️ stars because this book was absolutely PHENOMENAL. 🔥
You get Solani, a badass fae FMC who’s the shunned princess trying to right her scales by doing everything the council tells her. But has everything she’s been told actually been the truth? She starts picking up on things but it’s so hard for her to accept that she’s been led astray her entire life, and that internal struggle? It WRECKED me.
Then there’s Niko. A handsome siren who also happens to be Solani’s rival, especially when it comes to the trials in the Inbetween. I LOVE their banter, the fact that they literally try to unalive each other and then to watch how that slowly changes over time? That tension and yearning is SO real and I was NOT okay. 😮💨🗡️
Now this is where the real adventure starts. As Solani prepares to enter the trials, she starts to notice that something is off. She’s getting this sense that things aren’t right but can’t quite figure out what it is. And when she enters the trials? Let’s just say she’s got to not only get out ALIVE but figure out what darkness is coming out to play… and I can’t say too much but TRUST ME on this one. 💀
I also have to shout out Khaya, Solani’s best friend, she is the TRUE definition of ride or die and I love their bond so much! 💜
Mikayla’s world building is ALWAYS amazing and the elemental magic system in this one is so unique, it’s not your typical elemental magic and I loved every second of it. And the way she brings in her Latin culture into each of her books? I love seeing our culture represented in fantasy like this. The world building had me going back to the maps constantly so I could see exactly where everything was happening! 🗺️✨
If you haven’t read any of her books, you NEED to pick this one up! And then go read the Fate of the Acna series, another series set in her larger Elements of Iteria world. You’re going to want to read ALL of her books!
Here to whine and cry and beg and plead for you to read this incredible book! The trials aspect of this book had me SAT. Magic-less trials that included Fae, Sirens and Humans as contestants but was filled with treacherous monsters and a suddenly ever-changing terrain.
Solani, baby, i love you so much and you can do no wrong in my eyes. Eldest daughter, shunned Princess, family issues that will make you remember why you set your own boundaries. Sol and Khaya are what dreams are made of!! Best friends with the dynamic of sisters.
Niko, honey, I see you. He’s also earned title of- the rizz master 3000.
This book was filled with so much emotion, so much turmoil, but I was somehow giggling and swooning half the time? What a talent that takes. I can’t wait for more.
There were some really great things working here, but it was far too long for my liking. The relationship between Niko and Solani was well done; true enemies to lovers, no insta love, no constant lusty distractions from their goals.
While the world building wasn't exactly lacking, I could tell this took place in an already established world. It felt like there were some previous explanations missing that I had to sort of infer or guess on.
The pacing was all over the place, especially at the beginning. Solani would be doing one thing, then something completely different the next chapter with no segue. Once they were in the Inbetween it steadied, but jumped around some more again after that.
Solano was literally just trying to survive a system that decided she was unworthy before she even had a chance! Eldest daughter trauma in fantasy form and I felt every bit of it!
The rivals to allies slow burn and trials kept me locked in. Mikayla did something special here.
A Fall From Purpose is an enemies-to-lovers romantasy featuring Solani Rabasa and Niko Bohío.
The Bondan kingdoms were formed by the Rabasa line of the fae who reside in Zafyr, the Boriken line of the sirens who reside in Marpez, and the Claiborne (now Daughterys) line of the humans who reside in Abriza. It was decided that each would have a representative, a tribute, who would compete in deadly trials.
When Solani's mother died she was judged poorly by the goddesses. Solani was determined to be damned and had to earn her place in the afterlife. She did the shamans' bidding, slowly trying to even out the scales that measured her soul's worth, not just for herself, but for her younger sister Lilianna. Solani was also told she was to become the youngest tribute.
Solani received training for the trials by her uncle, Dario, and quickly became a force with which to be reckoned. Her biggest competition was Niko, a siren. Both threatened to kill the other at some point, but had yet to do so. The human tribute was never really a competitor although where they competed, the Inbetween, prevented access to their magic in an attempt to level the playing field.
Prior to this year's trials, the shamans passed along a message from the goddesses that the field was changed from prior events so no one would know what was coming. Solani was not too concerned until learning that her best friend, Khaya, would be accompanying her. Solani usually did not know the others who joined her and was able to focus on herself and her task. Having Khaya with her would split her focus in order to protect her friend from the many imminent dangers. One other change that Solani was surprised with was the formation of an alliance with the humans. In order to avoid a rift between the fae and the humans, Solani was asked to get them through to the halfway point safely. She had no choice but to accept knowing this too would slow her down.
Solani does her best but soon becomes separated from her group. She ends up temporarily teaming up with none other than Niko. What ensues is a gripping story of enemies being forced to fight their way through the trial together, while discovering a deadly secret which threatens all of Bonda.
This book is both the third in the Elements of Iteria series as well as the first in the new Sea and Stone series. I have not read the previous books in the Elements of Iteria and I suspect it might have allowed me to start with a little more context. That said, the book can still be appreciated as a standalone story.
The author did a wonderful job with her world building, especially in the Inbetween which is filled will all manor of dangers and monsters all too happy to eliminate competitors. I enjoyed meeting her characters and being witness to their development. I liked Solani's tough as nails character. Even with all she had been asked to do, and the loss of her parents, she still maintained her heart. Her relationships with Khaya and Lilianna were very special and helped to show her in a different light. I felt like I didn't learn as much about Niko however I appreciated his relationship with Allyna, his best friend, and liked seeing his interaction with his mother. I found myself most intrigued by Nefeli and hope she shows up in future books.
After her mother was cast out in death and deemed unworthy of an afterlife, Solani’s fate was sealed in silence. She would not inherit the throne, but instead the heavy weight of judgement, measuring the worth of her soul. Solani seeks redemption and freedom but is burdened by obligation, and forced to participate in the deadly, magicless trials in the Inbetween.
No competitor is more ruthless than Niko Vasco a powerful Siren of the water kingdom. Despite their bloody history, fate forces he two to fight side by side against the true evil growing within the Inbetween.
In this years trials, the stakes are heavier than ever as Solani believes her victory will finally grant her her freedom. However, she is forced to choose between fulfilling her purpose and saving everyone in Bonda.
I was locked in from chapter one!
This story is unique, intense and so powerful. Solani is such an incredible FMC. She is resilient, headstrong, confident and cunning but still loving, understanding and vulnerable. Her strength and ability to strategize makes her intriguing but her inner conflict is what humanizes her and makes her such an amazing character. Her relationships with her best friend and sisters are so vital and truly highlight the importance of female relationships.
The trials, the monsters, the action…INSANE! Mikayla Hornedo keeps us on our toes throughout this book! The world is beautiful and so wonderfully complex. So much occurs in this book but it is so wonderfully paced! You never miss a beat and there is never a dull moment. Mikayla discusses themes of isolation, trauma, rejection and loss so masterfully, connecting us to the story in deeply personal way.
Solani’s relationship with Niko is just perfect. I won’t say too much, but the tension…WHEW. The way I love him. Their journey is just so beautifully executed and makes sense.
I feel so fortunate to have been an early reader for this book! I cannot wait to add it to my shelf and I am DYING to read book 2!
A Fall From Purpose pulls you in with its high-stakes premise, but it is the emotional weight behind Solani’s story that really makes it linger. Solani is a shunned fae princess, burdened by a legacy she never chose and forced to prove her worth through brutal, magicless trials. From the beginning, there is this constant tension between who she is and who the world insists she must be. Watching her navigate that pressure, while still holding onto pieces of herself, is what grounded the story for me. The trials themselves are intense and unforgiving. The monsters are dangerous, but the real threat often comes from the people around her. Alliances feel fragile, trust is earned inch by inch, and every decision carries weight. It keeps the pacing tight and the stakes consistently high. The dynamic between Solani and Niko Vasco adds another layer that I really enjoyed. There is a sharpness to their interactions that slowly shifts over time, and the banter brings a needed contrast to the heavier themes without taking away from them. One of the most impactful aspects of this book is how Mikayla D Hornedo shows up in the fantasy space as a Latine author. There is a clear sense of intention behind the characters, the power structures, and the exploration of worth, legacy, and belonging. It does not feel surface level. It feels rooted, and that presence adds depth to the entire story. It is meaningful to see stories like this take up space in a genre that has not always made room for them. If you enjoy morally complex characters, dangerous trials, and character-driven fantasy with emotional depth, this is absolutely worth picking up. I am very curious to see where the series goes next.
It took me a while to sit with my thoughts on this one because it was just so good! Mikayla grows with each book and seeing that growth makes me so happy.
A Fall From Purpose is book one of the Sea and Stone series in the Elements of Iteria universe and follows the sunny side. There are fae, humans, and sirens in this side of the world. Solani, a fae enters yet another trial in The Inbetween where champions from each kingdom fight to win. This time however, something darker and evil makes itself known. Also- you don’t have to have read Fate of the Acna, but if you have, you’ll see so many cool Easter eggs!
Solani. My girl! She is the epitome of eldest daughter who is trying to do her duty to her family while also learning who she is outside of that. She is fearless and badass and sarcastic. As an eldest daughter who deconstructed her faith myself, I see so much of myself in her.
Niko is her rival/ enemy who maybe becomes more?! He is strong and perpetually smirking which I love. He is a great foil to Solani and shows us that who we become really does depend on both nature and nurture. The way he challenges Solani both competitively and spiritually is really amazing. Also, the chemistry and playfulness between them leads to some super spicy situations.
The rest of the cast, especially Solani’s bff Khaya round out the story so well and make this book so so good! Mikayla is amazing at creating vivid and interesting casts in her books to make it so multidimensional.
Having read all of Mikayla’s other books, my brain is constantly making connections and theories and I can honestly say it occupies a lot of my brain.
I stumbled upon the ARC sign up for A Fall From Purpose and I’m so glad I applied! As a new Mikayla D Hornedo reader I was hesitant to read without the context of her other books, but I felt my entry to the world and plot was pretty seamless as a reader. Now that I’ve read A Fall From Purpose I’m definitely curious about how her other books tie in to the overarching story.
A Fall From Purpose is a story centered around Solani, an outcast princess who is desperately trying to earn the favor of the shamans so she can be granted a good afterlife. She earns favor by acting as an assassin and as a tribute to a deadly trial. She is a repeat contestant along with her arch enemy, Niko, who happens to be very hot siren. Solani is used to facing her challenges alone, but with a larger foe threatening the world she must learn to accept help. On top of surviving and denying all feelings for her siren ally, Solani is battling with big questions about her purpose, her worth, and if everything she’s ever believed was false.
This read is fast paced and plot focused as the characters fight for their lives in the trials. Solani and her allies battle unique monsters and must use their wit to uncover clues to how to pass each stage. Hornedo has a way of gently reminding readers of important clues and facts in the mystery through all the fighting and enemies-to-allies banter.
One story telling detail that I really appreciated was the diversity of insects in the world. As a huge fantasy fan, I have mental images for a lot of fantasy worlds and A Fall From Purpose has a very different vibe. This read is perfect for fans of enemies-to allies, deadly trials, kingdom politics, and she-saves-him.
If you love deadly trials, enemies to reluctant allies to lovers and forced proximity; this is the book for you. Solani is stabby, fierce, and sassy Fae who is a shunned Princess due to the sins of her mother. She is under the Council’s thumb to do their bidding to balance her “scales” so she can be deemed worthy. Her friend Khaya is her ride or die, nosey, meddling and protective and then there is Niko. Niko is a handsome Siren and Solani’s rival. Niko is top tier book boyfriend. He and Solani have been enemies for over a century and whenever they go against each other during the trials, he can never seem to find it in himself to unalive her. I wonder why? LOL!!! My boy Niko is cocky, sarcastic and loves to get under Solani’s skin working her last nerve, but he is down bad for Solani, and he had a battle within himself for majority of the book coming to terms with his truth about Solani. A truth everyone from his inner circle was already aware of.
While navigating the trials Solani, Khaya and Niko realize that something is wrong; terribly wrong and a sinister being is using the trials as it’s hunting ground for new recruits to join the rebellion or eliminate anyone who stands in the way. Solani decided to work with Niko is a tenuous truce while trying to unravel the deception that is navigating in the shadows. Which leads Solani to question everything she has ever been told, as well as the truth pertaining to the circumstances leading to her mother's fate.
The council has been tight lipped, and Solani, Khaya and Niko soon learn why and feel powerless to stop what’s coming. Ending on a heart pounding cliffhanger; I can’t see what happens next with our Dream Team Trio
I had the absolute pleasure of receiving an ARC of A Fall from Purpose by Mikayla D. Hornedo—and wow, this book completely pulled me under.
Serving as both the third installment in the Elements of Iteria and the first in the Sea and Stone series, this story expands the world in such a compelling way. We’re taken to the other side of Iteria, where the stakes feel just as high, if not higher. Between the brutal, high-pressure trials in the Inbetween, a shunned princess fighting for her place, and a dangerously alluring siren man (yes, please), there’s never a dull moment. And underlying it all? A creeping darkness that feels ready to consume everything in its path
While it carries a familiar intensity reminiscent of the Fate of the Acna series, Solani stands firmly on her own as a protagonist. She brings a fresh, distinct voice to the story, and I especially loved how her backstory was introduced early it added depth and emotional weight right from the start. Her journey feels raw, layered, and incredibly intriguing.
The trials gave me strong, deadly competition vibes (in the best way), and I was fully locked in for every moment of tension, strategy, and survival. As for Solani and Niko… their dynamic is equal parts confusing and captivating, and honestly, I think that’s exactly the point. The uncertainty makes it all the more addictive to read.
And that ending? I am beyond ready for Solani and Daya to cross paths finally. The anticipation is unreal. Mikayla D. Hornedo is truly building something special with this world, which is rich, immersive, and impossible to put down. If you’re not already reading her work, consider this your sign.
I love that whenever I'm in a fantasy mood, a Mikayla D. Hornedo book DELIVERS. (Initial reaction)
If you've read The Fate of the Acna books, you know that the Inbetween is a scary place to be. In A Fall from Purpose, there is a whole trial revolving around surviving the Inbetween; however, this time, things are different.
I really enjoyed this story! I was stressed by the trials, annoyed by the humans, and shocked by the ending. There is such a vast difference between the beautiful world of Bonda and the blandness of the Inbetween that I could feel it with the characters. But there is also so much more. I loved Solani and what she represented. The main character, Solani, is under immense pressure from her people regarding her "purpose". There are discussions around the deconstruction of religion and forging one's own path. Supportive friendship (I loved the dynamic of Solani and Khaya). The highs and lows of sisterhood. Sign language representation. The need to consistently prove your worth. Hornedo packed a lot of real topics in here that will deeply resonate with readers.
Do I think it is necessary to read The Fate of the Acna books before this? No. There are recognizable hints from those books, but if this is a reader's first time in the world, it will not be confusing and still be enjoyable.
I definitely recommend this book. I'd recommend this to fantasy readers, readers who love life or death trials, and anything I've mentioned above.
Thank you to Mikayla D. Hornedo for an ARC copy in exchange for a review. I honestly cannot wait to see what is going to happen next in this world!!
It's no secret that I love Mikayla Hornedo's books, and A Fall From Purpose was another incredible adventure. It has everything I love in a romantasy. There's romance and incredible banter. There's epic fantasy world building, with really fun new powers that all felt so fresh. But there's also this layer of intense character work that was probably my favorite part. When someone challenges your world view and everything you've been taught, how do you respond?
Thank you to the author for the eARC.
Solani is a strong and fierce FMC. She loves her sister and her best friend but is shunned by most of the kingdom. So every year, she must compete in a trial. Should she win the earnings for her people, they may look at her with pride for a minute or two. This year, the trials are different. Enter Niko. I am absolutely obsessed with the male siren. He's such a great character, and their banter was PERFECTION. They've been competitors for years in these trials, but this time, they just might need one another. You can't tell me that's not delicious.
I had such an amazing time with this one, and I can't wait to see more from this world. I love the way this series is set up. A Fall From Purpose is book 1 in a new duology, BUT it's still part of the overarching Elements of Iteria world. So you can read this before going back to Blood & Brujas and Air & Essence. There will be a fifth book that brings the two sides together, and I can't wait for all that is to come!
A Fall From Purpose is everything that is good about fantasy fiction—it’s high stakes, perfectly paced, and full of compelling, nuanced characters. The worldbuilding is vibrant and real, trapping you alongside the main characters in the Inbetween. And the romance?! You’re about to fall in love.
As always, I have to highlight the FMC, especially considering Hornedo’s heroine is the epitome of a strong female character. FMC Solani is understandably traumatized by a system that wasn’t meant for her. There’s a push pull between the real Solani and who her people have decided she was meant to be. Solani’s familial and religious trauma is almost as brutal as the deadly trials at the center of the story. It’s a demanding, oppressive presence that threatens to tear her apart. But Solani spends the book actively working to set clear boundaries and deconstruct the worldview that’s been dictating her existence for so long. It’s uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time, which made me love her even more.
The aforementioned trials are even more treacherous than you can imagine. The terrain is inconsistent, keeping the reader and contestant on the edge of their seat (and at constant risk). Monsters also hide around every turn, making it impossible to determine who will survive.
A Fall From Purpose left me with scars, but also healed them along the way. I’m endlessly grateful to Mikayla D. Hornedo for the eARC of what is easily my favorite book of the year so far.
The moment I met Solani, my first thought was, did we just become best friends?! I was pulled in and captivated by her, the elements, world and characters! AFFP blew me out of the water or let me say into the water so Niko (the mmc) who is a siren can save me 😏
Solani is a shunned fae princess whose purpose is to balance her scales in hope to receive an honorable afterlife. In order to achieve this, she is at her kingdom’s bidding and a resident tribute to the deadly trials in the Inbetween. Niko is her biggest competition and thorn in her side. Usually they are at each other’s throats and shedding blood, but this year the trials are different and darker causing a shakable alliance to form.
Truths and beliefs are being questioned, otherworldly rumors seem to be true and the lines between enemies and allies start to muddle. In the midst of growing power, violence and death were still roots of love, courage and light.
I am in awe of Mikayla’s writing and the fantastic set of characters and magic system! Thank you so much Mikayla for the gifted ARC! I loved this book so much!
Inside the dark fantasy pages, you’ll find: ☀️ Monsters (legit terrifying but so, so good!) 🌊 Deadly magicless trials ☀️ Nicknames 🌊 Feminine rage ☀️ Found family 🌊 Fae, sirens, humans and wyverns ☀️ I’m going on record to say, I’m the blood moths biggest fan!
This was such an amazing read. Thank you so much for the gifted copy
As soon as I started this one I knew it was going to be 5 stars and it did not disappoint.
Immediately Mikayla pulled me in with the fmc Solani. Instantly I knew I was going to love her and be rooting for her. The introduction to her character and how she ended up being this fierce fighter was done so well. The MMC, Niko, also immediately had me interested in how he would play a part in this story and how the relationship could possibly begin when they were rivals constantly trying to kill each other the past. The back and forth banter was perfection. The emotional moments added so much more depth to the characters. I think the pacing and build up was done so well and I loved being given little details of their past sprinkled in. Khaya was such a fun character and a best friend we all want, I definitely hope we get more of her. I love books with trials and these were great, but then the twist of darker secrets at play made them so much better.
That ending had me so freaking excited for where this next one is going to go. And the Epilogue… I’m so ready.
This was my first book for Mikayla, but definitely won’t be my last. I’m immediately going back to read the others. She is now an auto buy author for me.
A Fall From Purpose is an action packed ENEMIES to lovers, Dark Romantasy which will leave your head spinning. It's the third book in the Elements of Iteria series and follows the MC Solani as well as her enemy turned lover, Niko. My girl Solani is an absolute BADASS!!!! She is my fictional BFF. Solani the Men Slayer was out here slaying them in left and right. If you were anywhere as near obsessed with Xena as I was, you will love Solani.
It's no secret that enemies to Lovers is my most beloved trope. I have to give authors the full bouquet of flowers when they hold true to it. Mikayla gave us ENEMIES. I did not like that man, she made me hate Niko to the point that he still can catch a side eye. 😜 This story was great, it was highly entertaining, had lots of angst, great world building and magic that you wish was real, tit for tat banter, and characters just kicking butt! If you are a Romantasy lover this series is a MUST read! ⚔️
P. S. This can be read as a standalone, but it's a better experience if you have read the other two books in the series. There were plenty of easter eggs sprinkled in here.
Mikayla's writing will never fail to captivate me! A Fall From Purpose was my first foray into the Elements of Iteria series, but what an immersive and magical world it is! While you don't need to have read books 1&2 to enjoy this one (new duology and new characters), I definitely plan to circle back and read them now that I'm finished with A Fall From Purpose!
Our lead Solani has been continually shunned by her people and has made it her sole purpose to do whatever it takes to ensure her soul is found worthy. She's been at the beck and call of the shamans/council and their whims as they dangle hopes of a better fate for her to gain Solani's compliance. And one of these tasks includes participating in deadly trials alongside other fae, humans, and sirens.
Solani is fierce, protective, and driven. She does what needs to be done and will shoulder any burden to protect those she loves. I adored her relationships with and devotion to Khaya (best friend) and Liliana (sister). And Niko (hot siren)? Both of them have a long history of being at each other's throats...literally. I really enjoyed watching their dynamic transform from rivals to reluctant allies to something more!
This story was packed with action, banter, deadly trials, introspection, and mystery! There's something for all readers to love!
What a GREAT read!! Definitely one of my favorite reads this year.
Solani holds a special place in my heart, as an eldest sibling myself I could relate far to much to the weight/responsibility she places on her shoulders & add in a bit of parental trauma & you might as well have written me into the book 😅 Solani is resilient, stubborn, a tough character but kind heart (for those she holds near) make her extremely relatable & special. I love her SO much.
The world itself is captivating & had me wrapped up in every detail! It was different than what I’ve grown accustomed to & it made the story that much more intriguing. From the way the lands were described to the beliefs each group had it left me wanting to know more & questioning everything.
Niko? A man. Love him so much. I’m a sucker for a broody & witty MMC & Niko is exactly that.
& don’t get me started on Khaya!! I LOVE HER BAD!! Such a great & supportive friend. The way Solani & Khaya don’t play about each other is the cutest thing.
If you’re looking for a book to have you stuck in your seat with trials, hidden agendas, complex family dynamics & great banter this is a book you HAVE to pick up.
Mikayla, you have me in your grasps & I will be reading just about it anything you publish (& have already published) ♥️✨ thank you for allowing me to be apart of your ARC team.
Every choice Solani makes weighs upon her scale; each a measure towards her purpose or an inherited pressure of her darkness. It would be safe to say her fate was decided long ago when the flowers on her mother’s grave withered to ash. Now a disgraced princess-turned-government-hound, her days are filled with the unsavory tasks her priests dole out to her. That is, until the trials. Every decade or so, as part of her penance, Solani must volunteer for the trials that will send her racing through the Inbetween without her magic. This year, she'll not only have to face the unsettling creatures that populate the Inbetween or even Niko, her irksome adversary, but something lurks in the shifting shadows… something that intends to bring the world to heel. As her understanding of the world up-ends, will her scales find balance? Or is this the beginning of her fall from purpose?
Mikayla D. Hornedo is one of my absolute favorite authors! So, when she said “A Fall from Purpose” was on its way, I was already strapped in. Semi-sort of a spinoff, but also considered a continuation, we get a chance to return to Iteria, only this time, we find ourselves in Bonda, the land Malva hasn't had access to since the Goddesses roamed the earth. The sun is shining, the Fae are connected to the earth, there are humans, and something is clawing its way out of the depths.
While the book and Solani’s story exist within “The Elements of Iteria” series, you really don't have to know much about “The Fate of the Acna” or Daynara to get into “Sea & Stone”. There are a few interesting Easter eggs, but this story is as easy to get into and thrilling. It was so packed full of action, passion, and angst that I found Solani quickly becoming my favorite of Mikayla’s characters. This book was 500 pages of pure edge of your seat excitement and I am eager to return to Iteria soon.
It was nice to get back into the Elements of Iteria series with this new installment. I loved Blood & Brujas and Air & Essence so much, I knew this one would be right up my alley.
A Fall from Purpose is more adventurous & suspenseful, with trials and games. There are a few spicy scenes 🥵, but the focus is on figuring out truths vs lies in the darkness of the Inbetween & beyond. Magical elements are still there, but this is more action-packed.
Princess Solani has been shunned her whole life & used as a weapon for her kingdom & her family. So much weight is on her shoulders to prove her worth & purpose. Being trained her whole life to think a certain way has her in fight or flight mode all the time.
I love that she meets her match with Niko. He literally balances her out and shows her she should follow what she believes versus choosing what might be right for her kingdom. Once rivals.. turned allies.. turned lovers (kinda?!). Whatever it was, I loved it!
And let's not forget her bestie, Kahya. Now this is what you call a friendship! There through thick & thin, wanting the best for each other & always having each other's back.
The ending!! My girl!!! Let's go book 2!!
Thank you to Mikayla D Hornedo for the free eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! 🩷
This was an absolutely incredible read! I have sooooo many highlights. 😭 I LOVE IT. 1 of my top reads of the year. Easy.
The inner turmoil our FMC goes through wasn’t something I was fully prepared to take on as my own. The beautiful rollout of Solani’s story, beginning to end, gave me all the feels. Religious trauma wasn’t something I realized applied to me until reading this book. Our girl made me feel SEEN. 🫂 Every choice, every question, every action of Solani’s felt like mine. Then we have our BESTIE, who we couldn’t do it without, our voice of reason, our rock. “Mind you, I also drank all the wine.” Yes, Khaya girl. 🥂 Our sister, those we’d do anything for. & our enemy, destined to be more than an ally, who would’ve had *me* FOLDED far earlier on. 🤭
We get elemental magic, but the trials are magic-less, with a unique twist they finally notice. The monsters are terrifying & the stakes only get higher as you read on. But honestly, this read had sooo many of my favorite things! & so many thought provoking points. I could quote half the book here.
I honestly cannot wait to see where we pick up with the next installment! I’ll be waitinggg at the door. 🙃
Listen, Mikayla can do no wrong!!! This series is absolutely for the people who LOVE world building. I think this is the only series I’ve ever gone back and actually referred to the map lol.
I absolutely loved Solani and Niko together! They were the absolute definition of enemies to lovers. I mean the man even had a huge scar on his chest from where she tried to kill him 😅 My girl has gone through so much and been used like a pawn for so long, that it was so refreshing to have someone like Niko break down some of her walls. While Khaya is an amazing friend to have, Sol needed someone to LOVE her in a way only a romantic relationship could. Having walls broken down while trying to fight for your life is wild! I can’t even imagine the nervous regulation system Sol had during all of this. I can not wait to see how this all plays out! And that little Daya snippet at the end?!? Loved it.
One thing I really appreciate about Mikayla is that she slips a lot of her Boricua side into her writing. Everything from the Boriken family, to the Spanish words and food mentioned was so awesome to see! I immediately wanted a bacalao when I saw she put it into the story ❤️
A big thank you to Mikayla for the ARC.

I asked in Mikayla's discord if the FMC was bixsexual. Her reply: "You can assume all of my fmcs are bi unless I say otherwise." Girl, now you're speaking my language.
Thank you for the advanced copy. This post reflects my honest review.
I'm so grateful to have finally read a book from the (in)famous Mikayla D. Hornedo. I love everything about how Mikayla shows up - on Instagram, on Threads, in her Discord. She feels incredibly authentic, her characters are deep and deeply flawed, and her stories reckon with some difficult topics.
Harshly independent FMC: “I didn’t want to rely on anyone for a single thing, so if there was a way for me to teach myself anything, I took that opportunity.” MMC is a total simp Background of religious trauma Diverse cast of characters Animal sidekick Hilarious best friend I’d call it enemies to lovers but it’s more of a she-hates-him-to-lovers scenario lol Not as spicy as I would have thought. 2 peppers maybe
You will love this book if you like: 💜 he falls first and harder ⚔️ deadly trials 👑 secrecy and lies 👩🏽 eldest daughter syndrome ⚔️ enemies to lovers 🐶 golden retriever mmc
I 🖤 a skillfully crafted FMC who is strong & badass but possesses layers of nuance, and Mikayla is masterful at this.
Solani (like Daya) is not one dimensional and she became more and more intriguing as the story unfolded. Boy, did it ever unfold…
Solani is dealing with some heavy trauma inflicted upon her by her people and her family. She strives to show that she’s worth something, but really, she’s just in the wrong place to see her own value.
The Inbetween was one hell of a ride. The hardships that these characters endured ultimately led to small clues that really pushed the plot forward. The plot itself mirrors the overarching plot of Blood & Brujas in a great (but not identical) way.
I also love me a slow-burn, and this one does a great job. I love that Solani has to battle not only monsters, but her faith in her people and in herself. Niko and Khaya are great supporting characters and help drive the plot forward.
I’m very into this continuation of the Elements of Iteria and I adored the characters in the book. I would have liked more chapters from Niko’s POV, but I can wait until book 2 (I hope). This was just a really well done book.
I want to thank the author for the opportunity to receive an ARC of this book and I’m excited to see where the story goes!
I had a fun time reading through this story and finding out more about Solani and her world. I think my main issue was that it dragged on in quite a few places in the book and I had to keep myself from skimming through a lot of—what felt like—pages and pages of info dumping. But other than that I enjoyed the premise and the characters for the most part!
I really enjoyed that their magic was taken away during the trials as it helped even out the battlefield amongst far and humans though the fae still had other beneficial abilities that the humans did not (ie quicker healing). It made it feel a bit more real and made things far more interesting that they had to physically beat the obstacles/terrain and beasts without the ability to basically just zap them out of existence (or let blood moths do the work) with magic.
Overall, I’m excited to keep reading on in this series and am interested to see how Solani handles things from here on out.
Solani is the perfect example of the eldest sister. With her mother taken away at a young age, Solani must step up and face the trials and tribulations the goddess has deemed fit while also being shunned from the only world she’s ever known. Everything she does now is to survive and protect her younger sister no matter the cost, even at the cost of lives.
I really loved how strong Solani is and how badass her skills truly are- her banter and her relationship with Khaya are some of my favorite things about her.
the pacing was a little up and down for me- the trials were really interesting and I appreciate that they were magicless, to really showcase everyones survival skills but I think with the combination of fighting a monster every few pages and some info dumping, it made the pacing a bit off for me. Regardless I am still really intrigued to read book 2 with how this ends!!
Remember, you are never truly alone, and the weight of this world doesn’t press down on only your shoulders. ~ As many times as we’ve battled, getting under your skin is my favorite. ~ What. A. Ride!!! Mikayla is truly the best at world-building (but make it fun and fierce) and that delicious slow burn tension fueled from hatred that inevitably turns into the explosion of need we all know and love. I am truly obsessed with Niko, you have no idea. Maybe it’s the siren qualities but I am just so drawn to him and the beautiful words that he says! This whole story of the trials was so interesting because yes, they were battling for a ‘win’ in a sense, but the underlying mystery and subterfuge was incredible, and something I love so so much in these books. And my heart. MY HEART!! Mikayla, how dare you?!? (Even though you fixed part of it near the end, I still cried my eyes out AGAIN when they went to the village). I have so many questions, so many theories and I cannot wait to see where Solano and Niko’s journey takes them in the next book! AND THE EPILOGUE EXCUSE YOU!!!
