Life in the Light by Michael L. Pagano is an excellent and thorough companion to First Epistle of John. Pagano’s first published work carefully walks through each verse with clarity, depth, and strong biblical grounding. It unpacks the connection between belief, obedience, and love, emphasizing that true faith in Christ produces a transformed life. He highlights John’s teaching on grace, eternal security, and the evidence of genuine faith, making this a valuable resource for both new believers seeking clarity and seasoned believers needing a steady reminder of God’s faithfulness.
Personally, this book challenged me to examine whether my faith is truly producing fruit; love, obedience, and a growing hatred for sin. Something that stuck with me is the reminder that while we are called to live honorably, love sincerely, and walk humbly, we are only responsible for our obedience; God is responsible for our reputation. It’s fine if people reject us because of Christ, but it’s a problem if they reject Christ because of us. The emphasis on “by this we know” shifted my perspective, reminding me that confidence in my faith comes from God’s Spirit at work within me, not from constant self-measurement. God’s love is not fragile or dependent on my success, but secure, eternal, and unchanging. This isn’t a book I could rush through; it’s one I had to sit with, reflect on, and return to, as it continually pointed me back to the truth that in Christ, we are known, secure, and called to walk in the light.
