Their match was meant to serve the Empire. Instead, it may destroy it.
Sabine Almarien has survived on cleverness and careful obscurity. But when a mark said to bind her to a magically perfect match appears on her skin, the Empire forces her into the Season: a cruel marriage mart where blood vows determine magical power.
Worse, that supposedly perfect match is Lord Death himself.
Azrian Vaelros—the Emperor's ruthless enforcer—has buried one wife already. He has no interest in another blood vow, least of all with a maddening woman who despises everything he represents.
But the Emperor gives him no choice.
To survive the Season, Sabine and Azrian strike a careful bargain: fake a courtship to satisfy imperial scrutiny, while quietly searching for a way out of their arranged marriage. But when other marked couples turn up dead, the two of them are drawn into a shared investigation that binds them closer than either intended. Each truth pulls them deeper into each other's orbit... and into a conspiracy at the heart of the Empire itself.
As their blood vow approaches, they'll have to choose: become the perfect weapon the Empire demands, or forge something far more dangerous.
If Bridgerton were doused in magic and murder mystery, To Break a Vow is perfect for fans of tension-filled slow burn enemies to lovers romantasy. It will appeal to readers who loved The Crimson Moth duology by Kristen Ciccarelli, Belladonna by Adalyn Grace, and Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco.
Ella was born in Italy and raised in various old-as-heck schools around Europe, which in hindsight was probably her dark academia villain origin story. She’s been writing angsty romances while listening to 2000’s pop-rock since before she really had any business doing so. The soundtrack hasn’t changed much (the 2000s gave us some absolute bops and that’s a hill she’ll die on), but the romance has gotten queerer and spicier.
A Game Cursed and Deadly is her first published novel.
Laurenti delivers an utterly enchanting debut in Book One of The Soulmark Cycle, weaving together magic, murder, and romance into a story that’s impossible to put down. The worldbuilding is richly immersive evoking the elegance of a period drama layered with the intrigue of a crime mystery, all touched by a subtle but compelling thread of magic. The murder mystery is masterfully executed. As the clues begin to fall into place and the truth emerges, the reveal is genuinely shocking and deeply satisfying. Equally captivating is the romance. Laurenti gives us everything and nothing all at once, creating a slow-burn dynamic that brims with tension and longing. Watching Azrian and Sabine’s relationship unfold is easily the highlight of the novel. Sabine’s sharp wit paired with Azrian’s effortless banter makes every interaction sparkle, while their enemies-to-lovers arc delivers all the yearning and emotional intensity readers crave. This is a story that lingers long after the final page. I can’t recommend it highly enough be sure to pre-order your copy ahead of its release on May 1, 2026.
To Break a Vow is a romantasy filled with magic, mystery, secrets, and a slow burn with all the tension. I really enjoyed this book! I love how creative and different the plot is. It kept my attention to the very end. My favorite trope is arranged marriage, and this one does not disappoint! Everyone has their own agenda and will do what they must to get what they want. There is political intrigue, so many secrets, and wondering who it is you can trust. I had so much fun with this book and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
If you love romantasy, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, fake relationships, fated mates, slow burn, political intrigue, secrets, and betrayals then this is for you!
Thank you to the author for a gifted copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all thoughts are my own.
Review of advance copy received from Author 4.5 ⭐ Spice: 🌶️🌶️
To Break A Vow by Ella Laurenti is the perfect book for fans of Bridgerton and the romantasy genre. The tension between the MCs, Azrian and Sabine, will have you holding your breath. Prepare yourself for banter, yearning, found family, and murder mystery. Though this is a romantasy novel, the love story is not the center of the plot, and don’t expect the book to be packed full of spice. To Break a Vow teaches us that perhaps love is the greatest act of resistance one can commit.
The plot follows Sabine and Azrian, who are bound to each other through special marks on their skin and are arranged to be married, though neither of them wants that. Azrian has already been married once, which ended in tragedy, and Sabine’s only mission is to ensure her sister’s happiness and success. Plus, the two could not be more different. Azrian obediently serves the Empire as its executioner, but Sabine is defiant, not willing to play the part everyone expects her to. The two agree to a fake courtship. But when other marked couples begin turning up dead, Sabine and Azrian start to wonder what the marks really mean, and whether they are the next targets.
From the moment I began reading this book, I was so invested. It was difficult to put it down, I was practically addicted. As a fellow eldest daughter, I related to Sabine (the FMC) so much. She is so quick-witted, I found myself giggling during her banter with Azrian. And the tension between the two was so strong I could feel it in my chest, I even caught myself holding my breath at times. Azrian is a professional yearner. Magic, fake dating, and murder mystery all tied together to create a truly captivating plot. And the truth behind the marks and the murders truly surprised me. Overall, I loved everything about this book, from the author’s writing style to the setting to the characters. I will be recommending this book to all my friends and fellow romantasy readers out there.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
This romantasy has all the drama, banter, and tension you’d expect, but with a darker twist. The premise hooked me right away—magic weaving, the Gilt, the marks—really fresh and unique. Sabine and Azrian are bound by these marks and forced into an arranged marriage, starting with a fake courtship that quickly turns dangerous when marked couples begin turning up dead.
Sabine is such a standout FMC—strong, defiant, and completely grounded in who she is. And Azrian? Fully dark and broody, basically death incarnate, but also a total yearner. Their slow-burn romance is done so well—the tension, the banter, the buildup…so good.
The mystery and twists keep things moving, the magic system is original, and the side characters bring depth and found family. This a strong start to the series. If you want Bridgerton vibes with a murder mystery and magic, this delivers. That ending though? I will be needing book two immediately.
Thank you to Netgalley and Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op for providing an advanced reader copy of To Break a Vow by Ella Laurenti in exchange for an honest review.
Wow.. this book CONSUMED me. I inhaled it and have not stopped thinking about it since. Such an incredible read from beginning to end. And, beautifully written. Laurenti’s writing style is elegant, expressive, poetic, lyrical, with such a vivid, rich, refined vocabulary.
This first installment in The Soulmark Cycle, is a dark romantasy that had me in a complete chokehold, with its intricate plot full of political intrigue, shocking betrayals, and a uniquely crafted magical system that felt so fresh and addictive.
The FMC is rebellious, angry, and wants to burn down the system that reduces her to an arranged marriage pawn, and I absolutely loved every second of her defiance.
And the MMC?? a deliciously dark daddy who is deeply embedded in that very system making their dynamic even more intense. The banter?? ELITE. The tension?? Unbearable.
True enemies to lovers with such a slow burn.. I mean the yearning is painfully delicious. And the spice?? a slow simmer that builds and then suddenly HITS. It’s SO good.
If you love dark fantasy romance with political scheming and deception, court intrigue, high stakes, murder mystery and delicious tension.. this one is a MUST READ!
Thank you to the author/publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Okayyyy… it’s giving Season 2 of Bridgerton but with magic. 😍
✨ TROPES ✨ • fated mates • sassy FMC • shadow daddy • arranged marriage • fake courtship • murder mystery • slow burn • he falls first • first POV
We follow Sabine (FMC) and Azrian (MMC), who are both marked to find their match and enter the social season. Azrian is the empire’s ruthless “right hand,” and when other marked pairs begin turning up dead, Sabine and Azrian agree to fake a courtship and delay their arranged marriage for as long as possible to avoid the same fate. And honestly… who doesn’t love a murder mystery mixed with fantasy romance?
The tension between Sabine and Azrian was EVERYTHING. I’d give the romance 1 🌶️ because nothing physical really happens until about 90% in — not even a kiss — but the buildup was so worth it. Watching Azrian shift from loyalty to the empire to complete devotion to Sabine was 🔥🔥🔥. There’s truly nothing this man wouldn’t do for her.
This was such a fun, addictive read. I genuinely couldn’t put it down, and that cliffhanger left me desperate for book 2. I can’t wait to see where the author takes the story next
To Break a Vow has a really interesting premise and definitely delivers on the Bridgerton mixed with fantasy vibes (especially in the first half). The way that the characters spoke to each other scratched that Bridgerton itch while also being set in a fun fantasy world with magical powers. I definitely see potential for Laurenti’s writing to be great because the bones are there and the book was enjoyable! I liked Sabine as the main character and Azrian is also an interesting and loveable MMC. I found that the most intriguing relationship was actually between Sabine and her sister. I really felt invested in their plot and every scene with the two of them had me sucked in. The reason I couldn’t rate the book any higher is because there were big jumps in time that would happen in between chapters and those were pretty jarring. Without going into any spoilers, there were many times throughout the book when something very important would happen, the chapter would end, and then the next chapter would pick up weeks later. There were a few times that I hadn’t noticed how much time had passed and it felt like I wasn’t getting enough time with the characters after big events and there wasn’t enough time to see them live in their spaces before the story moved along to the next thing. I also wish that we got more of Azrian and his men because there is a devotion that is spoken about but I would’ve much rather seen his character on page rather than talked about (more seeing less talking if that makes sense). But honestly, I was still easily entertained and I don’t think that any of these criticisms tainted the fun I had while reading. Huge thank you to Ella Laurenti for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review! :)
This book deserves 🌟ALLLLL the STARS🌟 it was absolutely FANTASTIC!!
Are they bound by blood?…Or is it something…more?
In this fast-paced, magical Romantasy you’ll get blood vows but also something so much deeper. We follow our FMC, Sabine, on a journey to uncover what the Empire is hiding and the secrets they are keeping…about her!!
This book has all the Bridgerton vibes, if only they had magic 😍🪄 — with the Regency Era feelings of Pride and Prejudice and the like!
Sabine, is quite witty and intelligent, but being the elder sister, she also bears the responsibility of caring for her younger sister and sacrifices much of herself so that her sister can have what she (thinks) she deserves, Sabine gives off the same air as characters like Elizabeth Bennett and Eloise Bridgerton, in that she appears serious, and is determined to forge her own path, while putting family loyalty first! She initially frowns upon the idea of entering into a courtship, and is uninterested in finding a husband, she is fiercely independent, her candid commentary though keeps her character lively and relatable!
Sabine is cautious that she may not be able to afford to meet the Empires demands that she herself participate in “The Season’s” events while also giving her sister the season of her dreams as well! Fortunately, Sabine’s own Fairy Godmother, Lady Delarine, shows up and takes her in — offering to sponsor her for the season! Lady D is a mix between a mother figure and the bestie accomplice who will help you bury the body, no questions asked! She is intelligent but has that sneaky air of “I’m not gonna tell you, til you figure it out, but then you’re in DEEP with me” friend! — let’s burn those bridges together!!
As Sabine is forced into an arranged marriage to the Empire’s most lethal man, one who has killed enough to earn the name “Lord Death”, Lady D helps her to navigate “The Season” and her return to society that she never expected to make.
We first meet Lord Death, Azrian Vaelros, in the halls of the Registry, where they discover that there is something the Empire is hiding from them, which involves the other and the marks they each bear — they agree it will be best to stay away from each other…only, they don’t even know each others names! He later shows up again — and the second they see each other the mysterious places where the Empire has marked them, flare to life! No matter how much distance they try to keep it’s no use after he is threatened by the Emperor himself to court her “or else”!
The TENSION and slow burn!!🔥— I definitely almost chucked my kindle in the air at one point! And the dreams…they do not disappoint 🥵🌶️
She makes him want to be himself. ❤️ Even though he’s lost that over the last few years in his service to the emperor.
Things take a turn when couples that are “marked” like Sabine and Lord Death, start dying after taking their vows. The Empire knows more than they’re saying 👀 WHO KNOWS what they could really be hiding and who is ACTUALLY to blame!
Reading this book honestly felt like a giant game of ‘Clue’…trying to put all the pieces together of who is doing what, where and how! It keeps you on the edge of your seat! — I literally read 80% of this book within 48 hours! A spectacular mystery, with an incredible SLOWWWW BURN romance, that won’t distract you from the story line and the world building! I love all of the little details and the unique magic system — I really hope we get to see more of this develop in the next book and learn more about the other affinities!
I devoured this book. Slow burn romance with Bridgerton vibes and a murder mystery. The writing had lots of witty banter and the magic system was very unique. The characters were complex but believable and the pace of the book had me hooked from the beginning until the end.
This story follows Sabine and Azriel, who are bound by a mysterious mark that leads them to uncover secrets about the Registry—the powerful force governing their society.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Sabine and Azriel. Their connection developed naturally, and the banter and tension between them kept me engaged the entire time. The twists, secrets, and the way everything slowly unraveled were also really satisfying.
I do wish the magic system had been more developed. The different affinities sounded so interesting, but I wanted a bit more depth and exploration. The structure of the world—the Registry, the Gilt society, the emperor, and all the different roles—was also a little hard to follow at first. It did become clearer as the story went on, but there was a bit of a learning curve in the beginning.
I also appreciated the author’s descriptive writing and how emotions were portrayed, though at times some descriptions felt a little difficult to follow.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. I loved the character dynamics, the unfolding mystery, and the ending—and I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
I just finished reading an ARC of To Break a Vow by Ella Laurenti and all I have to say is this is without a doubt the most maddening book I have ever read! But in the best way possible 😏
You have your Bridgerton vibes with a little magic and murder mixed in there, so where can you go wrong.
In the course of one story Sabine not only has to leave her home, but is told she is to marry, and who to marry. And it’s not just any man, it’s the Emperor’s right hand assassin pretty much. Then as she’s dealing with this whole marriage thing other couples are dying off. So of course she now is trying to figure out why, while trying to save herself, and understand what’s going on between her and her new husband!
Talk about your slow burn. If this flame moved any slower, a small gust of wind could have blown it out!
And as much as I would LOVE to go on a rant here about SOME of the characters (they know who they are) I will just say, the utter audacity of some of these people… If I were Sabine, I would have been throwing hands the whole book.
The ending got me. We’re told this is a stand alone book. But in my personal opinion it left me hanging on the edge of a cliff with a frayed rope!! It could go either way, but I wouldn’t be mad with a second book.
Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR! And don’t forget that preorders are now available!!!
Forced marriage. Slow-burn. Rebellious FMC. He falls first. Deception. A corrupt empire. This book is literally everything wrapped up in one nice package. I absolutely love the main characters, Sabine and Azrian, and following them through every obstacle imaginable to find the truth about what’s happening in the empire.
I’ve already pre-ordered the physical book, and I’m already impatiently waiting for book 2 to come out.
4.5✨ thank you to Ella Laurenti for this eARC! Yes, yes, absolutely yes. A romantasy and a murder mystery? Sign me up. The world building here is fantastic and I was hooked from the start. We have forced marriage/proximity, blood vows, ancient magic, betrayal, burn the system down, and some found family tropes. I absolutely love our FMC, Sabine. She has done everything she can in life to make the best of her bad situations, including her forced partnership with our Lord of Death, Azrian. This is a sloooooooow burn, my friends and it’s worth it. Were there predictable plot twists? Yes, but that didn’t make it less enjoyable. The cliffhanger again already has the street team begging for more!! Preorder yours now for May 1st!!
To Break a Vow is equal parts enchanting and mysterious and captured my undivided attention almost immediately.
The story has been marketed as "Bridgerton with a side of magic and murder mystery," and I found this statement to be 100% accurate.
The writing style is elegant, lush, theatrical, romantic, a modern plus historical blend of witty and insightful prose. Sometimes I felt I could literally hear the voice of Lady Whistledown in my head as I read. Lady Delarine squarely reminded me of Lady Dansbury, and the Gilt (the "ton") was just as politely vicious and gossipy as one would expect high-society to be.
The story follows Sabine, a progressive eldest daughter who finds herself forced into an arranged marriage with the Empire's most dangerous weapon, Azrian, after mysterious magical bond marks appear on their skin. Sabine must navigate the brutal social season, while struggling to protect her self-absorbed younger sister and begrudgingly agreeing to a secret alliance with Azrian as they investigate who is murdering the season's other bonded couples.
This is a delectable, true slow burn romance, so much so, that 80% in you'll find yourself wondering if the author is ever going to cease the burn and put you out of your misery!
The pacing was balanced, the plot, though slightly predictable at times, never lost its focus and unfolded in a way that still managed to feel refreshing.
The side characters were memorable, especially Sabine's younger sister Liora, who endlessly frustrated me (being an eldest daughter myself) with her clouded judgement to the point that I often found myself wanting to smack some sense into her on behalf of Sabine.
The magic system is fascinating and, from that ending, I can imagine they may next journey into the wilds of the Gloamreach to try to dig deeper into the hidden history of magic, which I’ll be excited to see unfold.
This was an easy 5⭐️ for me. This story manages to feel light while still covering some heavy themes like power, oppression and twisted social propriety. If you enjoy fast-moving, stories with a romance (and spice) that feels earned, alongside a bit of a Sherlock Holmes-esque murder mystery, wrapped in the drama of the Regency-era setting, you'll probably enjoy this book as much as I did.
Thanks to the author for sharing an advanced reader copy of this book with me. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.
Oh my gosh I loved this book! It gave Bridgerton vibes but with magic!?!?! Gah I ate it up!!
The world building was amazing! And the storyline itself was to die for!
Sabine is a badass. Plain a simple. She refuses to bend or mold herself into something she isn’t for anyone! When she gets a mark on her that she later learns will bind her to the Empires Hand Lord Death she still refuses to bend. Azrian is broody and hot as hell. He is lord death and he doesn’t want another blood vow. Their banter was top tier. But also the subtle shift when they finally realized what they meant to each other was so beautifully written. And the dream scene?!?! Yes pleaseeeeee!!
There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end but nothing too crazy and it’s set up so nicely to flow into book 2!!
I cannot wait to see where these characters go in the next book, I’m dying already to know what happens next!!!
Thrilling and gorgeous and SO MUCH FUN!! Regency-era high society, scandalized debutant season setting (the Gilt,) where those coming of age seek to have their affinities (magic) awakened with marriage and binding to a favorable match, both in affinity pairing and wealth/social status. The Registry holds control over all of it and dictates how Gilt life is to be lived. Sabine has never had aspirations of being anyone’s trophy wife, and as such, never paraded herself through the social scene, striving only to give her sister her every desire. Until she manifests a mark, and the Registry forces her to submit to the Season’s matchmaking. This seasons newly weds start dropping dead mysteriously, shortly after their Bindings, and what Sabine discovers about the murders could end up threatening her very existence, and that of her supposed “auspicious match.” It’s Bridgerton meets Sherlock Holmes, with magic and government conspiracy! Honestly there is nothing more you could ask for out of this style book! Once you get used to the way it is written, regarding the time period, very proper, the accent starts to form in your mind and flows beautifully! This is a win for me! And I have so many quotes to post!
4.5 ⭐️ Thank you so much to Ella Laurenti and her team for this ARC. I really really liked this book and the story was so good. It really captivated me and got me excited to come back to the book every time I put it down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
4.5 stars- To Break a Vow had a lot of my favorite tropes in here that were done so very well. A forced marriage that requires a fake courtship to keep a royal agenda, enemies to lovers, Found Family, and others. Sabine as a main character was written to be strong, smart, caring, witty, and loyal sister and friend just trying to keep her head above water and provide her sister with all the opportunities she can. Adrian- a magically powerful man and a deservedly accomplished leader who works as the King’s right hand- often doing the dirty work with his title as Lord Death. They find themselves marked as marriage matches, though both have their reasons to stall and fight to take their vows. One includes a trend of other marked couples dying shortly after marriage.
I loved how magic is used in this world- most similar to how it’s shown in Shadow and Bone except almost all people have it. Unlike other fantasy books I’ve read, it takes place in a Regency-style timeline which beautifully adds to the plot, characters’ development, and the strong desire to push the villain into a canal. And the banter (I love the old fashioned insults and say I’d speaking). I enjoyed the slow burn of the main characters m, especially the banter. I look forward to seeing how the enemy to lovers style of romance plot develops because each character fought it so much. I hope to see more of their found family In the next books. I can’t wait for the next book to come out (and hopefully see the villain fall into a canal or worse).
To Break a Vow is a beautiful story written about Sabine, a girl who hates the way society has written her story. This book gives Bridgerton mixed with magic. The scenery and descriptions are so in depth that I felt like I was there with them. This book grabbed my attention immediately! A woman who wants nothing to do with love or society yet finds herself in the middle of the public’s eye? Count me in immediately. To give a quick overview to stress how this needs to go on your TBR immediately this is how I’d describe the book. Sabine is a recalcitrant woman in a society that so badly wants to control her every move. She tried to do everything possible to give her younger sister a life she never had. Until one day a mark on her skin changes every plan she thought she had. Forced into a marriage pool she quickly realizes is a lost cause due to her ‘perfect’ match being found. Sue has to navigate new feelings, eyes constantly on her, mysterious new friends, and betrayal.
I hope that everyone can see this book is a must read! There are twists and turns, slow burn, shocking betrayal, and a strong FMC and MMC (he’s also deliciously hot). I have no patience when it comes to waiting for more from this series. I was instantly wrapped into wanting and needing to keep reading once I started. Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity!

This is based off an advanced readers copy provided by the author
Bridgeton meets murder mystery with magic. Slow burn - I mean slow but very well written. The book moved incredibly fast and jumps the plot. Sometimes I found this a bit jarring but it left me devouring the book quickly. The magic system is unique and I found the concept very interesting and refreshing. It was always there but is more in the back than at the forefront even while being a main theme in the story. The main female character is strong willed and witty. She doesn’t fit convention and through circumstance a survivor. This allows for the her and the main male characters to have laughable banter between the two. It does switch POVs which I find I like in a book when done correctly. A few side characters with intrigue and add in a dash of mystery and conspiracy and you have a great read. There is a bit of spice for those looking but it really is true to the time it replicates with soft touches and glances. My only maybe set back is the author does not take too much is world developing so it is not heavy on the background and for me personally sometimes it left me wanting more. There is great story telling that drives these characters, and twist and turns but the actual history only comes out when it pushes the characters forward. I want to know more, more about the land and setting, more about how everything came about. Who knows maybe I’ll get my wish in a second book…. 😏
I love an assassin MC and I’m a sucker for a fake courtship, so I already knew this would be for me.
Azrian is the Emperor’s assassin, loyal to a fault and trained to obey without question. Sabine, on the other hand, is a complete spitfire. She sacrificed everything for her sister and isn’t afraid to show exactly how much she despises the Gilt and the Empire, including Azrian.
While they were raised to hate one another, I love them together. There’s an immediate pull between them, but they don’t act on it right away. The banter was so good but the fights were even better. They didn’t hold back when they argue. The tension was soooo good that I was begging them to kiss.
The murder mystery woven into the story was perfection. I love romantasy and I love mystery and combination was 👌. There were multiple twists that genuinely shocked me. I absolutely did not guess the killer or the truth behind the marks.
I do wish we learned a little more about the magic system, but I love the concept of magic only awakening once a couple bonds. Sabine and Azrian’s magic complements each other so well and it’s honestly beautiful.
It does end on a cliffhanger, though not a brutal one, but it builds just enough anticipation for the next book. I can’t wait.
If you’ve ever wanted Bridgerton with magic and a few murders, you’ll love this.
How fortunate I am that this was my first ARC book. The writing was immediately captivating, the characters compelling, and the magic system intriguing it felt as if I was in the story as well. This novel was engrossing to the final page, thus leaving me desperately wanting the next book! To Break A Vow by Ella Laurenti is a dual POV romantasy set in a world of Regency-style society but with magic, murder, mystery (and some slow-burn thrown in).
To Break a Vow was so fun to read and I’m honestly obsessed. Sabine and Azriel’s banter had me actually laughing out loud! This is something that doesn’t happen often for me when reading. Their relationship build was so well done, and the slow burn was well done. It didn't feel rushed, which made every moment hit that much harder. The author’s descriptions were also really strong, they made it easy to clearly picture what was happening and pulled me further into the story. The magic system sounded really interesting, and I do wish we got a little more depth there—but with that ending, I’m hoping (and kind of expecting) there’s another book coming where we get to explore it more. Overall, such a fun read with great chemistry and tension. Definitely worth it if you love a good slow-burn romance intertwined with a murder mystery and some witty humor woven in
i doubted this book early on, but i shouldn't have. the prose is very descriptive and took me a while to settle into (its cadence feels like a ballroom dance, which may or may not work for you) but i came to respect it. the rhythm carried the story quite well once i got far enough.
bridgerton fans are going to lose their minds over this. i'm not one of them, so the mentions of court politics and societal expectations bothered me more than they entertained me, but i can see the appeal.
i was immediately more interested in azrian's pov, and would have liked to see more of the children of the flame. the initial intensity of azrian and sabine's dislike for each other is a little extreme, but their slow buildup of trust was interesting to follow.
moments i loved:
what i didn't love: - all the timeskips. they're the biggest reason i didn't rate this higher. action-packed scenes aren't given time to breathe before we jump to the next weeks or months later, and there are entire relationships that develop off-page that i wasn't privy to.
a story of found family, betrayal, political intrigue, and actively choosing not to play the game the way it was designed. glad i didn't give up on it!
READ THIS BOOK ASAP! The author's blurb: Sabine Almarien has survived on cleverness and careful obscurity. But when a mark appears on her skin—one said to bind her to a magically perfect match—the Empire forces her into the Season: a cruel marriage mart where blood vows determine magical power.Worse, her supposedly perfect match is Lord Death himself.Azrian Vaelros—the Emperor's ruthless enforcer—has buried one wife already.
I was offered this book as an arc by the author, and OMG! I was hooked from the very first page. Sabine is such a lovely, strong FMC, determined to be her own person and make her own choices in a world where women aren't really allowed either. Azrian is a smoking hot 🥵 morally gray Shadow Daddy. They don't like each other very much when the book begins, and they butt heads at every moment. The tension, the chaos! The world building was so well written, and the magic system is so unique. The reveal was so shocking to me - I totally didn't expect that at all! I am patiently (sort of) waiting for the next book! Run to get this one asap!!!
This was a book I never knew I wanted, and now I desperately need the second book. This book combines regency era, mystery, and fantasy in a fresh new story that will captivate all readers. There were so many aspects to this book that I loved; plot and character development, world building, and unique magic systems. Finishing this book will give readers a rush of enthusiasm, it’s good to finish a book that inspires hope for the battles to come.
Sabine is the perfect example that a strong wit and will is more destructive than brawn. I love how methodical and intelligent she is, and she always puts others needs ahead of her own. She reminds me a lot of Elizabeth Bennet, and I love her inner fire, refusing to conform to the status quo’s of society. Azrian is the perfect match for Sabine, he exudes power and strategical mind, but he also holds himself with honor, gaining the respect from his men. This is an honest slow burn, but the reward is worth it, I love seeing both characters slowly break down their barriers and admit the connection between the two of them.
While there are two fantastic main characters, the side characters were just as incredible. The brotherly bond between Azrian and Caelen was the perfect way to show Azrian’s protective and softer side. I loved the bond that grew between Sabine and Virelle, it showcases what friendship really means, and it showed two strong women who refuses to change their character. I loved Lady Dalarine, her quick wit and plotting made her one of my favorite characters. Liora will be mentioned only by name, my personal thoughts are angrily written amongst the margins of this book.
This book is enchanting, smart, and the perfect read for those who love the perfect balance of romance, world building, and plot development. To pick a favorite quote seems near impossible, I have so many I could list but there wouldn’t be enough room. I love the concepts of soul bonds versus blood vows, and I especially love a good revolution. Here’s to the perfect novel for those who love a strong FMC, intense slow burn, and characters you will fall in love with. I appreciate the opportunity to have arc read this book, it definitely makes me want to watch Sherlock and Bridgerton right now. All I ask is that book two is promptly released.
Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5 Author: @ellalau.author POV: Duel 3rd Person Gene: Historical Romantasy Triggers: Death, Open door, Violance, etc. Read Time: 8 - 11 Hours Expected Publishing Date: 5/1/2026 I received an advance review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
❤️ World Building: There are some really unique elements in this story that I really enjoyed. I especially like how you had to be bound (married) to someone in order to access your magic. And that the who you are bound to, must have complementary magic to what your magic is.
❤️ The Characters: I loved the character development in this book! Sabine was an understandable character, she’s done the best she can to raise her sister, trying to do it all. Azrian is your brooding grumpy MMC, he has a history that still haunts him. The side characters are also memorable and have their own character development which was really well done!
❤️ The Story: The story itself was well crafted. There were political dynamics, murders to solve, slowly growing feelings between couples, and betrayals. It was engaging and kept me interested long into the night!
❤️🔥Overall: I enjoyed reading this story, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance & Romantasy.
🛶Gondola Facts: Custom-made for the shallow waters of the Venetian lagoon, they were in use as far back as the 11th century – possibly further back than that, but the first documented evidence of them comes from 1094 – and for centuries they were the main way to get around. Prospective gondoliers must complete 400 hours of training before passing a test to prove their knowledge of how to operate a gondola, Venetian landmarks and history, and language skills. Little wonder that only three or four gondolier licences are issued each year. (www.venezialines.com)
Think Bridgerton meets murder mystery with magic! This book was incredibly well done.
The world building and language was immense, well woven into the story and bringing scenes to life.
The MMC (Azrian) and FMC (Sabine) were well fleshed out, with their stories naturally evolving throughout while staying true to their core traits. They both had amazing characters arcs that didn’t stray from their personalities and beliefs, adding to the story line.
Sabine and Azrian’s relationship was well built, with their original disdain changing over time to form a genuine bond. Their (eventual) respect and love for each other was well-earned as a reader, and I can’t wait to see more of that in the next book.
There is one spicy chapter, but overall, very low spice generally speaking. That said, the build-up to Sabine and Azrian’s admittance of their feelings for each other had me turning every page to find it.
The friendships were thoughtfully woven into the story, felt natural in their timing and development, and added to the overall plot in a meaningful way. (I’m calling the friends, Sabine, and Azrian the core 4 😁)
And, the surprise? I genuinely did not see the twist coming. Hit me like a freight train.
The betrayal? Again, the build-up to this was incredibly well done and absolutely heartbreaking, especially because you wouldn’t expect it to come from said person.
My only minor issue was with some of the chapter transitions, which occasionally felt a bit abrupt and didn’t always flow seamlessly from one to the next. That said, it didn’t really take away from how much I enjoyed this book overall.
Okay first off, I absolutely devoured this book ! I read it in 2 days and it honestly filled a hole in my soul that I didn’t even know that I had. If you love romantasy, and you love Bridgerton, then this book will absolutely be your new hyperfixation. The magic system was unique, although I wish it would have gone into more depth in the book. The Registry and The Empire were also such an interesting government and I absolutely loved them (and despised them, let’s be honest). The world building was also fantastic and I honestly never felt lost. Everything was the perfect amount of detail where I felt immersed but I didn’t feel like I was drowning or bored. And Sabine 😭 I think she is my new favorite FMC! She was so smart and strong and selfless and sweet. The sacrifices that she was making for her little sister to have the life she always wanted was so relatable as an older sister myself. And Azrian?? Absolute masterpiece of an FMC. I think he could have been a little more fleshed out and there were some plot holes surrounding his character, but overall I adored him. I also love a good arranged marriage trope, and this was arranged marriage done right! If you’ve watched Bridgerton, this was Daphne and Simon-esque but with Anthony and Kate’s banter and yearning and hatred/passion. And then throw in murder mystery and corrupt government ?? And rebellion ?? And a little bit of betrayal? Chef’s kiss ✨ 5/5 Stars. I would sell my soul to read this book for the first time again.

I love enemies to lovers and this does not disappoint. The banter was good. Yearning along with slow burn was fantastic. The murder mystery was actually very good, the truth behind the murder is a great surprise.
