Their match was meant to serve the Empire. Instead, it may destroy it.
Sabine Almarien has survived on cleverness and careful obscurity. But when a mark said to bind her to a magically perfect match appears on her skin, the Empire forces her into the Season: a cruel marriage mart where blood vows determine magical power.
Worse, that supposedly perfect match is Lord Death himself.
Azrian Vaelros—the Emperor's ruthless enforcer—has buried one wife already. He has no interest in another blood vow, least of all with a maddening woman who despises everything he represents.
But the Emperor gives him no choice.
To survive the Season, Sabine and Azrian strike a careful bargain: fake a courtship to satisfy imperial scrutiny, while quietly searching for a way out of their arranged marriage. But when other marked couples turn up dead, the two of them are drawn into a shared investigation that binds them closer than either intended. Each truth pulls them deeper into each other's orbit... and into a conspiracy at the heart of the Empire itself.
As their blood vow approaches, they'll have to choose: become the perfect weapon the Empire demands, or forge something far more dangerous.
If Bridgerton were doused in magic and murder mystery, To Break a Vow is perfect for fans of tension-filled slow burn enemies to lovers romantasy. It will appeal to readers who loved The Crimson Moth duology by Kristen Ciccarelli, Belladonna by Adalyn Grace, and Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco.
Ella was born in Italy and raised in various old-as-heck schools around Europe, which in hindsight was probably her dark academia villain origin story. She’s been writing angsty romances while listening to 2000’s pop-rock since before she really had any business doing so. The soundtrack hasn’t changed much (the 2000s gave us some absolute bops and that’s a hill she’ll die on), but the romance has gotten queerer and spicier.
A Game Cursed and Deadly is her first published novel.
Review of advance copy received from Author 4.5 ⭐ Spice: 🌶️🌶️
To Break A Vow by Ella Laurenti is the perfect book for fans of Bridgerton and the romantasy genre. The tension between the MCs, Azrian and Sabine, will have you holding your breath. Prepare yourself for banter, yearning, found family, and murder mystery. Though this is a romantasy novel, the love story is not the center of the plot, and don’t expect the book to be packed full of spice. To Break a Vow teaches us that perhaps love is the greatest act of resistance one can commit.
The plot follows Sabine and Azrian, who are bound to each other through special marks on their skin and are arranged to be married, though neither of them wants that. Azrian has already been married once, which ended in tragedy, and Sabine’s only mission is to ensure her sister’s happiness and success. Plus, the two could not be more different. Azrian obediently serves the Empire as its executioner, but Sabine is defiant, not willing to play the part everyone expects her to. The two agree to a fake courtship. But when other marked couples begin turning up dead, Sabine and Azrian start to wonder what the marks really mean, and whether they are the next targets.
From the moment I began reading this book, I was so invested. It was difficult to put it down, I was practically addicted. As a fellow eldest daughter, I related to Sabine (the FMC) so much. She is so quick-witted, I found myself giggling during her banter with Azrian. And the tension between the two was so strong I could feel it in my chest, I even caught myself holding my breath at times. Azrian is a professional yearner. Magic, fake dating, and murder mystery all tied together to create a truly captivating plot. And the truth behind the marks and the murders truly surprised me. Overall, I loved everything about this book, from the author’s writing style to the setting to the characters. I will be recommending this book to all my friends and fellow romantasy readers out there.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Laurenti delivers an utterly enchanting debut in Book One of The Soulmark Cycle, weaving together magic, murder, and romance into a story that’s impossible to put down. The worldbuilding is richly immersive evoking the elegance of a period drama layered with the intrigue of a crime mystery, all touched by a subtle but compelling thread of magic. The murder mystery is masterfully executed. As the clues begin to fall into place and the truth emerges, the reveal is genuinely shocking and deeply satisfying. Equally captivating is the romance. Laurenti gives us everything and nothing all at once, creating a slow-burn dynamic that brims with tension and longing. Watching Azrian and Sabine’s relationship unfold is easily the highlight of the novel. Sabine’s sharp wit paired with Azrian’s effortless banter makes every interaction sparkle, while their enemies-to-lovers arc delivers all the yearning and emotional intensity readers crave. This is a story that lingers long after the final page. I can’t recommend it highly enough be sure to pre-order your copy ahead of its release on May 1, 2026.
4.5✨ thank you to Ella Laurenti for this eARC! Yes, yes, absolutely yes. A romantasy and a murder mystery? Sign me up. The world building here is fantastic and I was hooked from the start. We have forced marriage/proximity, blood vows, ancient magic, betrayal, burn the system down, and some found family tropes. I absolutely love our FMC, Sabine. She has done everything she can in life to make the best of her bad situations, including her forced partnership with our Lord of Death, Azrian. This is a sloooooooow burn, my friends and it’s worth it. Were there predictable plot twists? Yes, but that didn’t make it less enjoyable. The cliffhanger again already has the street team begging for more!! Preorder yours now for May 1st!!
Forced marriage. Slow-burn. Rebellious FMC. He falls first. Deception. A corrupt empire. This book is literally everything wrapped up in one nice package. I absolutely love the main characters, Sabine and Azrian, and following them through every obstacle imaginable to find the truth about what’s happening in the empire.
I’ve already pre-ordered the physical book, and I’m already impatiently waiting for book 2 to come out.
This is based off an advanced readers copy provided by the author
Bridgeton meets murder mystery with magic. Slow burn - I mean slow but very well written. The book moved incredibly fast and jumps the plot. Sometimes I found this a bit jarring but it left me devouring the book quickly. The magic system is unique and I found the concept very interesting and refreshing. It was always there but is more in the back than at the forefront even while being a main theme in the story. The main female character is strong willed and witty. She doesn’t fit convention and through circumstance a survivor. This allows for the her and the main male characters to have laughable banter between the two. It does switch POVs which I find I like in a book when done correctly. A few side characters with intrigue and add in a dash of mystery and conspiracy and you have a great read. There is a bit of spice for those looking but it really is true to the time it replicates with soft touches and glances. My only maybe set back is the author does not take too much is world developing so it is not heavy on the background and for me personally sometimes it left me wanting more. There is great story telling that drives these characters, and twist and turns but the actual history only comes out when it pushes the characters forward. I want to know more, more about the land and setting, more about how everything came about. Who knows maybe I’ll get my wish in a second book…. 😏
I just finished reading an ARC of To Break a Vow by Ella Laurenti and all I have to say is this is without a doubt the most maddening book I have ever read! But in the best way possible 😏
You have your Bridgerton vibes with a little magic and murder mixed in there, so where can you go wrong.
In the course of one story Sabine not only has to leave her home, but is told she is to marry, and who to marry. And it’s not just any man, it’s the Emperor’s right hand assassin pretty much. Then as she’s dealing with this whole marriage thing other couples are dying off. So of course she now is trying to figure out why, while trying to save herself, and understand what’s going on between her and her new husband!
Talk about your slow burn. If this flame moved any slower, a small gust of wind could have blown it out!
And as much as I would LOVE to go on a rant here about SOME of the characters (they know who they are) I will just say, the utter audacity of some of these people… If I were Sabine, I would have been throwing hands the whole book.
The ending got me. We’re told this is a stand alone book. But in my personal opinion it left me hanging on the edge of a cliff with a frayed rope!! It could go either way, but I wouldn’t be mad with a second book.
Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR! And don’t forget that preorders are now available!!!
Thank you to Ella Laurenti for providing an eARC copy of To Break a Vow for an honest review.
Wow.. this book CONSUMED me. I inhaled it and have not stopped thinking about it since. Such an incredible read from beginning to end. And, beautifully written. Laurenti’s writing style is elegant, expressive, poetic, lyrical, and has a such a vivid, rich, refined vocabulary.
This dark romantasy had me in a chokehold with its intricate plot full of political intrigue, shocking betrayals, and a uniquely crafted magical system that felt so fresh and addictive.
The FMC is rebellious, angry, and wants to burn down the system that reduces her to an arranged marriage pawn, and I absolutely loved every second of her defiance.
And the MMC?? a deliciously dark daddy who is deeply embedded in that very system making their dynamic even more intense. The banter?? ELITE. The tension?? Unbearable.
True enemies to lovers with such a slow burn.. I mean the yearning is painfully delicious. And the spice?? a slow simmer that builds and then suddenly HITS. It’s SO good.
If you love dark fantasy romance with political scheming and deception, court intrigue, high stakes, murder mystery and delicious tension.. this one is a MUST READ!
The Plot: Since the death of her parents, Sabine has had one goal: protect her sister at all costs and make sure she has a life (and marriage) full of love. Even when the cost of that goal comes at the price of her own wants and happiness, Sabine has held steadfast in resolve for over a decade. But when a mark suddenly appears on her body - one that is supposed to lead her to her perfect magical match - her life is suddenly turned upside down. She's forced to enter Ilvarenne's social season to find that match and marry him, or else face potentially dire consequences. A task Sabine is fairly certain she'll be able to avoid since she has already met said "perfect match" and neither of them can stand the other.
Azrian, better known among the Gilt as Lord Death, hand to the king and and leader of the Emperor's spies, vowed years ago never to marry again after the death of his first wife. He sees Sabine as, at best, an inconvenience. But then their matching marks are revealed to the entire upper echelons of Ilvarenne society and word gets back to the Emperor who gives him one job - court and marry Sabine.
Neither is happy about this arrangement, but Sabine realizes that this forced match may be the key to fulfilling her promise to protect her sister and the pair strike an uneasy truce. They'll play the part of the doting couple so that her sister can find her own love match while secretly trying to find a way out of their own bonding. But their courting of convenience soon turns into an unlikely partnership as other members of the Gilt with marks of their own start turning up dead in mysterious ways. Thinking that they or those they care about may be next, Azrian and Sabine are determined to uncover the truth about these murders and who (or what) is behind them. As secrets are uncovered and lies begin to unravel around them, the are faced with hard choices and have to answer some difficult questions. Worst of all, they're faced with the same shocking revelation; "am I actually falling for him/her?"
The Review:
Holy hell batman, this book was an absolute RIDE. Think Bridgerton meets Criminal Minds, with just a splash of magic and you'll have this book. Laurenti has created an incredibly enchanting world full of magic, murder, and romance that hooks you by page one and refuses to let go. The word building and plotting of this story was so immersive, I felt like I was standing there with Sabine through it all. And the murder mystery was absolutely *chef's kiss*. As the pieces started coming together and we begin to realize who (or what) was behind them, I was well and truly SHOCKED which to me is the mark of a VERY good mystery. The romance too was written in such a way that Laurenti gave us EVERYTHING while giving very little at the same time. The spice wasn't central to the book (though it exists and was 🔥🔥🔥) but it was the banter, the slow burn from enemies to allies to lovers, the TENSION and the YEARNING that did it for me. On more than one occasion did I request a fainting couch to be brought in.
The Character:
Sabine: MY EVERYTHING. Sabine is the perfect representation of the eldest parentified daughter, putting her life on the back burner after her parents died to make sure she and her little sister Liora didn't starve. The hard work, dedication to the point of burn out and the amount of love she had for her family felt so raw and real especially as the book unfolds and we get more of that family dynamic. And the intelligence, this woman has more wit in her left pinkie nail than most people do in their whole bodies. She's self taught, (mostly) self made, and she takes shit from no one because she KNOWS she's one of the smartest people in any room she walks into.
Azrian: Yes, PLEASE. Azrian is about to be everyone's favorite new shadow daddy and I won't hear any arguments about it. He's funny, he's got a heart of gold behind that morally gray exterior and he's not your run of the mill MMC. Despite his less than stellar upbringing he didn't let that actually change him on a fundamental level even though anyone else in his shoes absolutely would have. Even before he really started falling for Sabine, he was very protective of her and her family just as he was protective of the men under his command. Yes. he'll do awful things but never because he wants to, and never when it will negatively impact those he cares most about.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you're a fan of tropes like forced proximity, relationships of convenience, murder mysteries, or series like Bridgerton, The Rose Bargain, or Rebel Witch then you need to pre order your copy NOW for it's release on May 1, 2026!!!!!
Before getting into areas where I struggled, I want to highlight that the writing itself is genuinely strong. The prose is often beautiful and feels intentionally crafted—there are moments where the sentence structure feels almost poetic. Lines like:
“Miss Almarien kept pace beside the Duchess, but with the rigid, stubborn strength of a willow forced to grow, straight and unyielding, among oaks.”
really stood out to me and showcase the author’s ability to create vivid, lyrical imagery.
That said, I found myself feeling a bit lost in the story overall, particularly in how some of the core elements come together.
One of the most compelling setups is the introduction of the MMC. He’s framed very clearly as dangerous—described with language like a “predator” whose reputation follows him like a “funeral procession.” This creates a strong expectation of tension, fear, and control.
However, the dynamic between the MMC and FMC feels at odds with that setup. Sabine is immediately sarcastic, defiant, and willing to challenge him (“Should I expect you will murder me, too…?”), which doesn’t quite align with the level of fear that’s been established. A bold, fiery FMC can absolutely work—but here, it feels underdeveloped. We don’t yet have enough grounding in why she behaves this way toward someone she internally identifies as dangerous.
Because of that, the romantic progression—particularly moments like the almost kiss shortly after—feels rushed and somewhat disjointed. It reads less like a natural build of tension and more like two different archetypes being pushed together: a dark, dangerous “predator” and a lighter, Bridgerton-style rake romance. For me, that blend—almost a murder mystery meets Bridgerton tone—didn’t fully come together. The two vibes felt like they were competing rather than complementing each other.
A similar disconnect appears in Sabine’s interactions with the broader political world. Her outward disdain for the emperor/empire feels underexplored at this stage, and her willingness to speak so openly—especially to someone she perceives as dangerous and tied to that system—feels inconsistent with the earlier tone of caution.
There are also moments where scene continuity pulled me out of the story: • A scene where the MMC is positioned across a park, yet both characters can clearly see subtle expressions and small actions. • The introduction of a dancing master, followed by the FMC already dancing shortly after without a clear transition.
These inconsistencies made me pause and reread, which disrupted immersion.
On the worldbuilding side, there are elements that feel introduced but not yet fully grounded: • The phrase “oh threads” seems culturally significant, but its meaning isn’t clear yet. • Sabine’s statement about being “tired of being lied to” doesn’t feel fully supported by prior events, so the emotional impact doesn’t land as strongly. • Her extended grief over the loss of a couple felt disproportionate to what had been established about her connection to them.
Overall, there are strong pieces here—especially in the prose and initial character setup—but for me, some of the character motivations, tonal blending, and worldbuilding details felt slightly out of sync. With clearer grounding and more cohesive alignment between tone and character behavior, I think the story could feel much more immersive and impactful.

Thank you to Ella Laurenti for providing an eARC copy of To Break a Vow for an honest review!
I'm actually speechless. I found myself waking up at 3 AM to grab my Kindle because I wanted to know what was going to happen next in this fast-paced story. To Break A Vow is an enchanting mix of Bridgerton and Sherlock Holmes with magic, and it absolutely delivers. Laurenti created an amazing world full of memorable characters, murder mystery and romance that sucks you in and won't let you go.
The Plot:
After the death of her parents, Sabine makes a vow to herself that she will ensure that her sister gets the life she deserves. She wants her to have a happy marriage picked by love, her own personal fairytale. When she awakes with a mark on her body that was not there the night before, her world is turned upside down. Trying to go about her day, she finds herself face to face with Lord Death himself (who has already lost a wife matched to him before), realizing he bears the mark matching her own. Their paths collide and neither care to be involved with the other, no matter if the Empire or the Registry demand it or not. Realizing it may be the way to give her sister everything she wants, Sabine agrees to play the part. When other marked couples start turning up dead, the two realize they need to work together to uncover what is going on - and if their lives and the ones they care about are now in danger, too.
The Characters:
Sabine: Our FMC is truly one of the most intelligent minds I have had the pleasure of reading about in quite some time. She has a strong eldest daughter attitude, and she is dedicated to ensuring a good life for her little sister at whatever cost it is to her own. She is self-taught, she is witty, and she is strong.
Azrian: This MMC is your next book boyfriend shadow daddy. Watching his hard demeanor soften and crumble under Sabine's was a toe-curling, feet-kicking ride. His powers are dark and destructive, and I hope we get to see just how wild this man can be in the next book. He teases several times that we have zero idea what he's capable of...I desperately want to find out.
"If you wish to run, tell me and I will tear down the world untiil there is nowhere left for them to find you."
Weird way to propose, but the answer is yes.
I can't wait for this book to release May 1st, if it doesn't blow up I may scream.

I had a really good time with this book, but I definitely have thoughts 👀
Sabine and Azrien are bound by these marks that basically decide their future for them, but neither of them actually wants the marriage. Azrien is being forced into it by the Emperor, and Sabine plays along because she thinks she can use the situation to benefit her sister. So instead of leaning into the bond, they’re both navigating it for their own reason, which sets up a really strong tension from the start.
Azrien, sir, LISTEN. That man had so much potential for chaos. Dark, controlled, “I could ruin you and everyone around you” energy, and then he folded a little too fast for me. I don’t do instalove, and while this is technically a slow burn, he caught feelings quick. Also, at some point you do need to actually claim your woman. Respectfully.
This is a slow burn, but emotionally it felt uneven. From Azrien’s side, you can feel that shift early. The tension, the pull, the restraint. But from Sabine’s side, I wanted more. Her internal thoughts felt a little distant at times, and I never fully felt that same level of emotional conflict or buildup. I needed more of that, “this is becoming a problem” energy from her.
Because of that, the romance didn’t hit as hard as it could have for me, even though the dynamic itself was there.
What surprised me most was the mystery element. I’m not usually a mystery reader, but I was constantly questioning motives and second guessing everyone, and there were a couple twists that genuinely had me sitting there like hmmmm wait, WHAT?!
The world building and magic system were interesting, but not always clear. I found myself a little lost when it came to things like the Registry, the Gilt, and how everything actually functioned within the Empire.
Also - Sabine’s decision making?? I just…...... ma’am 😅
But even with all of that, I was hooked. The tension kept me reading, the twists kept me engaged, and Azrien still had me locked in.
I will absolutely be reading the next book… if for no other reason than to see this relationship actually go somewhere 😮🔥
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Ella Laurenti does a fantastic job in blending together the regency of Bridgerton, the elegant mystery of Sherlock Holmes, and all the wonderful aspects of fantasy in Book One of The Soulmark Cycle. Throughout reading To Break a Vow, I found myself giggling at the clever banter between characters, swooning over Azrian and his yearning for Sabine, and being pleasantly surprised by the friendships that bloom within the story. While this book is a fantasy romance first and foremost, Laurenti does a wonderful job in bringing in other elements that don't make it the main focus of the book. Between the dynamic and well-rounded female main characters that display the best forms of women empowerment, showcasing how impactful harsh societal values and laws can be, and presenting how individuals can work together to bring to light the corruption a system brings to a city, the love story of Azrian and Sabine is the cherry on top! She does a remarkable job in having the reader question the societal values within this world and push the boundaries on doing what is right not just for characters, but for the people overall. Watching Azrian's and Sabine's story unfold is also worth mentioning because it was my favorite part of the whole book. I enjoyed the quick wit of Sabine and the matching banter of Azrian. In every scene, the growing tension between the two could be felt outside the pages. Watching such a formidable force, like Azrian, yearn for Sabine in such a delicate and thoughtful way made my heart so very happy. I'm a sucker for big, scary man being a cinnamon roll for one woman. It'll get me every time. The one thing that was breath of fresh air in reading To Break a Vow was that Sabine was no damsel in distress. She is a very capable and able to handle herself throughout society without needing much help. She is strong within her own right and Azrian acknowledged and respected that of her. He knew to compliment her, not overtake her. I admire that about this pairing and cannot wait to see what unfolds for them within book 2. My only complaint... having to wait for the next book! I'll be sure to mark my calendar for the second book release.
I was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the ARC team for this book, and I’m so grateful for that. Being part of the start for this world has been such an honor! I definitely recommend reading this book the moment any one has a chance!
Ella Laurenti’s To Break a Vow feels like stepping into a Bridgerton type world with a quiet thread of magic—think the social maneuvering and tension of Bridgerton layered with the slow, simmering mysticism of A Discovery of Witches. The main focus is on power, loyalty, and the cost of doing what’s right.
At its heart, this story is driven by Sabine; a protagonist who embodies “eldest daughter syndrome” in a way that feels sadly real. She hasn’t just grown up too fast—she’s effectively become a parent to her younger sister, sacrificing her own desires to hold what remains of her family together. That dynamic adds an emotional weight to every decision she makes, especially as the narrative unfolds and the lines between duty and self-preservation begin to blur.
The romance between Sabine and Azrian is a true slow burn, the kind that builds through glances, restraint, and unspoken understanding rather than sweeping declarations. It’s deeply satisfying, not because it’s easy, but because it isn’t—every step forward feels earned, and every moment of connection is layered with tension from the world around them. This makes it so much more real and true.
What really elevates the story, though, is the betrayal at its core. The fracture between sisters cuts deeper than any romantic conflict could, precisely because of everything the protagonist has given up. Watching that bond unravel—and seeing her forced to confront the painful truth that love doesn’t always mean loyalty—is one of the most compelling aspects of the book.
Ultimately, To Break a Vow is about standing up for what’s right, even when it means standing alone or accepting help from those we never thought would be our best allies. It explores the quiet bravery it takes to break out of roles that were never chosen, and the cost of choosing integrity over obligation. Rich in atmosphere, emotionally grounded, and driven by complex relationships, it’s a story that lingers long after the final page.

Thank you to Ella Laurenti for the ARC of To Break a Vow
Ella Laurenti’s first novel in her Soulmark Cycle Series, To Break a Vow, combines magic, mystery, and romance in a Venetian inspired town during the formal Season of the Gilt nobility. Sabine Almarien and Azrian Vaelros find themselves with magical marks branding them as a chosen couple destined for a blood vow, but instead they scheme together to present a fake courtship while attempting to find a way out of the forced bond. As the Season progresses, other newly marked couples who take the blood vow are found dead, and, in an attempt to save themselves and others, they team up to uncover the mystery behind the marks and deaths, uncovering long lost legends and political conspiracies that may unravel the Empire as they know it.
All in all, I really loved this book. Ella Laurenti's writing style is truly poetic. For me, both main characters were written very well, with strong independence, strength, and loyalty (perhaps to a fault), I was truly rooting for them throughout. The side characters had wonderful depth and motivations of their own that made each of them multi-faceted and believable. The plot progresses at a great speed, it never felt like it moved too slow or too quick, and secrets were revealed throughout the novel, keeping me reading gleefully and devouring each twist and turn that it took. The magical world in which the book takes place was revealed slowly, no heavy world building, but also lots of secrets I’m hoping we’ll get answers to in the next book(s)?! I felt truly surprised by the reveals and enjoyed unraveling the mystery with the characters. The romance is SLOW burn, but Ella Laurenti, didn’t leave us completely wanting in this first book of the series…hello dream scene ;) Overall, the book was engrossing and plot-driven, with so much that was revealed and yet so much still left to uncover! I can’t wait to continue the series, I don’t think the second book can get here fast enough!
A magical world where following the status quo is everything. An arranged marriage that risks developing into a genuine connection. A mystery and conspiracy that threatens everyone's safety. You won't want to put this book down! Sabine Almarien thought she was in the clear, thought she had made it safely beyond the risk of becoming bound with a blood vow. One fateful day, an unmistakable mark appears on her skin. The mark signals a magically blessed, perfect match that will inevitably lead to a blood vow. Left without a choice by the king, she is forced into an arranged marriage with the king's ruthless enforcer, Azrian. She dreads her upcoming nuptials with a man she barely knows and who was accused of killing his first wife. When marked couples begin dying off, Sabine and Azrian reluctantly begin investigating the murders together. The reluctant couple fights to navigate the dangerous political waters of the empire while unknowingly growing closer. Can they figure out who is killing off marked couples before they become the next target?
A slow-burn romantasy story with a murder mystery and intrigue. This story was filled with memorable characters, an interesting magic-based system, and suspense. The female main character is bright, resilient, and spunky, the perfect challenge to our broody male main character. There are many yearning and romantic moments between the two throughout the story. The murder mystery keeps the reader invested and anxious to find out what happens next. This story was a great kick-off to a new series that will have readers eagerly awaiting the sequel.
For readers who enjoy romantasy slow-burn stories with a bit of mystery
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is an advance reader copy (ARC) and may contain errors or changes before final publication. My review is voluntary and reflects my personal thoughts.
To Break a Vow follows Sabine and Azrian, as they navigate a forced courtship neither of them asked for, brought on by marks appearing on their bodies that declare them perfect matches. Which would have been well and fine, if either of them wanted to be married: Sabine is a governess supporting her sister’s own debut this Season, and Azrian has already put a wife in the ground. But one can never fully escape the marriage mart, can they?
But what the Registry and Emperor wants, they get. So Sabine and Azrian play their parts and their fake courtship takes root as they search desperately for a way out of this arrangement. That plan gets considerably more complicated when other marked couples start turning up dead, and suddenly Sabine and Azrian are investigating as partners, racing to stop a murderer and make sure they, or their loved ones, don't become the next bodies found.
I loved everything about To Break a Vow: the premise and worldbuilding, the lyrical prose, the banter, and how hard Azrian yearns. And oh does this man yearn. Every page written was fully immersive and had me forgetting what I was doing (I walked 10 miles on my walkingpad the first day fully enamored with the world and writing). There was a beautiful blend of Bridgeton-esque romance (specifically Kate and Anthony) and Sherlock Holmes level mystery that had me incapable of putting this down.
If TBAV doesn’t blow up when released, I *will* riot.

Thank you @ellalau.author for the ARC and opportunity to read To Break A Vow. You deserve your flowers.
Big thanks to Ella Laurenti for allowing me to be an early reader of To Break A Vow. I loved every second of this book!
I honestly don’t even know how to put into words how obsessed I am with this book… it totally took over my mind in the best way. From the very first chapter, I was totally hooked and didn’t want to put it down for a second.
This dark romantic fantasy has it all—political intrigue, betrayal, lots of tension, and a magic system that feels fresh and immersive which let’s be honest who doesn’t love that! The stakes are super real throughout the story, so you’re always waiting for that next big twist.
The female main character; is completely fierce. rebellious, and refuses to be controlled by the system.
And the male main character… WOW. Dark, complicated, and so much a part of the world she’s fighting against, which makes their dynamic even more intense. The banter is witty, the tension is off the charts, and the slow burn…It’s painfully good.
One of my favorite parts of this story is the characters. You’ll find yourself loving some, side-eyeing others, and honestly disliking a few—and that’s what makes the story feel so real. It adds depth and keeps you emotionally invested the whole way through.
Enemies to lovers in this book is done perfectly. The slow build makes every moment hit even harder. And the spice, It sneaks up on you—slow and simmering until it’s just impossible to ignore.
If you’re into dark fantasy romance with high stakes, court politics, messy loyalties, and tension that will keep you on edge (but in a good way), this book is a total must-read.
Deadly trials used to be my go-to trope. For the longest time, nothing could beat them. But lately, magical murder mysteries have been steadily climbing the ranks… and this book officially sealed it as my new favorite trope. What that says about me, considering both involve people dying, is something I’m choosing not to examine too closely.
This world was such a joy to read. Imagine a setting that feels like Regency-era society blended with the canals and atmosphere of Venice, then add magic to the mix. It gave me strong “Bridgerton, but with magic and murder” vibes, and I loved every second of it.
Sabine is easily one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read in a while. She is kind and compassionate but also quietly defiant, willing to stand up for what she believes is right even when it costs her something. That balance made her feel incredibly real and easy to root for.
And then there’s Azrian, a man convinced he is a monster. Watching his dynamic with Sabine unfold was one of the highlights of the book. Their banter was fantastic, and the slow evolution of their relationship felt natural and engaging.
The plot centers around couples being mysteriously murdered, leaving Sabine and Azrian to unravel the truth behind what’s happening. The mystery element kept me hooked the entire time as the clues slowly came together.
Between the immersive setting, compelling characters, and the magical murder mystery at the heart of the story, this book completely pulled me in. I loved the ending and am already impatiently waiting to see what happens in book two.
First of all: Ella Laurenti absolutely knows what she is doing.
If you love arranged marriages, a man who yearns, and a slow burn, then this book is for you!
The plot: Sabine gave up everything so she could keep a promise to her parents that died, to make sure her sister is happy. For year, she made sure her sister had everything she needed so that she could join the Season and make a match. But things do not go as planned when she ends up marked and paired with Emporer's Hand, Lord Death. From there, it is a roller coaster of murder and mystery. The mystery of not only who is committing the murders of marked pairs but also, what do the markings mean? You will hate some characters, *cough* Liora *cough* and then fall for others in this romantasy series. But we also learn, most of us are a victim of circumstance and we also have to forgive those that had no choice or thought they were doing what was right for the greater good.
I sometimes have a hard time liking the FMC but the way she wrote Sabine made me love her so much. She is such a fierce woman who just doesn't give a crap about what anyone thinks of her. Then we have our MMC, Azrian, who you want to get mad at but just cannot. He is what every woman wants, protective, supportive, and doesn't try to douse her fire. He only kneels for her, **swoon**.
I already cannot wait to see what book 2 has in store because that cliffhanger was, ugh!
I just want to say thank you to Ella for the honor of receiving an advanced eARC.

I really enjoyed this, the author describes it as bridgerton with magic and that's very accurate. The social season side of this is well done and gives a great backdrop for this particular magical storyline to play out.
Plot wise I had a really great time, the pacing felt even and we get some interesting turns in the story. I absolutely loved the way our characters deal with these plot points. I loved the side characters, there's a couple that especially captured my attention. Then there's one that is truly very irritating, shout out to the author for how well she did that character.
I loved both our main characters. Az is very mysterious and Sabine is an interesting head to be in. Within the romance they have some great banter with each other and the slow burn is well and truly slow and burning. You can feel it in every scene they have in close quarters.
I do hope we get to see some more of the magic system (should the series continue) because it's very interesting. For reasons explained in the plot we are limited in one POV but I kind of like that, it's not something you often see in fantasy these days. We do find ourselves thrown into the plot a little with the world building coming later and some people may find that a tad disorienting.
Overall I really enjoyed it and I'm hoping for a second book (soon ideally, I have questions). I received an advance review copy of this book, and this review represents my honest opinion. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this book.
Just finished reading my ARC copy of To Break a Vow by Ella Laurenti @ellalau.author Thank you so much, Ella, for giving me the opportunity to read this before publication. I enjoyed this book so much! But, Ella, I need those three little words!!
Basically, Sabine Almarien is forced into making a blood vow with the most ruthless man in the kingdom, the emperor’s enforcer, Azrian Vaelros. Azrian has no interest in taking another wife, after his first wife died tragically. And Sabine has no interest in taking another husband. After their parents’ deaths, her sole goal in life is providing for her sister. When magical marks that appear on both Azrian and Sabine draws their magic to one another, the empire requires they be vowed. But all is not as it seems with the empire that Azrian so loyally serves, and his loyalties become tested.
To Break a Vow is a slow burn Romantasy with a strong FMC and a MMC worth yearning for! I don’t think I’ve read anything with this type of magic system, and I found it really interesting. There are lots of character surprises and growth, with several of the characters turning out to be something other than what I expected. It’s not high on the spice with just one open door scene. But what a scene! Adding another series to my TBR! Thank you, Ella!
Forced proximity and fake marriage??? I’m in. This book is marketed as a slow burn and it didn’t lie. I had so many moments where I was BEGGGGGGGING for more between the two main characters. Watching their relationship unfold as they learned more about one another other and how similar they truly were felt like a reward. Additionally, I also loved their shared camaraderie and how it brought them closer. One thing throughout this book though that I wasn’t the biggest fan of was that it always felt like it was missing something to me. I’m not 100% sure what it was, but there is something about how some plot points just get left behind with no consequence, and there’s little explanation for some situations or history. I would’ve liked to see a lot more about the magic system and what weaving what supposed to be, along with broader story building. I’m curious to see where this goes next since it’s an intriguing story and left me wanting to know more. This was filled with many themes that played off of one another nicely, and I loved the aspect of found family and learning to choose for yourself, throughout it all.
Thank you Ella Laurenti for a digital ARC of this book.
To Break a Vow was so fun to read and I’m honestly obsessed. Sabine and Azriel’s banter had me actually laughing out loud! This is something that doesn’t happen often for me when reading. Their relationship build was so well done, and the slow burn was well done. It didn't feel rushed, which made every moment hit that much harder. The author’s descriptions were also really strong, they made it easy to clearly picture what was happening and pulled me further into the story. The magic system sounded really interesting, and I do wish we got a little more depth there—but with that ending, I’m hoping (and kind of expecting) there’s another book coming where we get to explore it more. Overall, such a fun read with great chemistry and tension. Definitely worth it if you love a good slow-burn romance intertwined with a murder mystery and some witty humor woven in
Thank you Ella Laurenti for the opportunity to read this ARC ♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Sabine is our kickass witty fmc who has accepted she’s basically living to take care of her garbage-trash-brat sister, until she wakes up one day with a magic mark and stumbles into the (ofc) smokin hot mmc Azrien who has a matching mark meaning they’ve got no choice but to be forcibly married by the creepy religious order. Their story gets rolling ASAP. I mean shit hits the fan literally in Ch. 1.
A bit on the info-dumpy side. By about page 50 I was getting a grip and was able to enjoy the writing. The plot was also very predictable but the story and side characters were still a good time. The world building and explanation of the magic system did not flow well to me. I did think the magic system concept was really cool and unique, though. Later into the book I realized that at times terms/people were introduced and not really explained until paragraphs later and that’s what was throwing me off.
Some of those lines she was dropping were fuckin fire. The fantasy aspect was disjointed so-to-speak but the romance was on point.
I love an assassin MC and I’m a sucker for a fake courtship, so I already knew this would be for me.
Azrian is the Emperor’s assassin, loyal to a fault and trained to obey without question. Sabine, on the other hand, is a complete spitfire. She sacrificed everything for her sister and isn’t afraid to show exactly how much she despises the Gilt and the Empire, including Azrian.
While they were raised to hate one another, I love them together. There’s an immediate pull between them, but they don’t act on it right away. The banter was so good but the fights were even better. They didn’t hold back when they argue. The tension was soooo good that I was begging them to kiss.
The murder mystery woven into the story was perfection. I love romantasy and I love mystery and combination was 👌. There were multiple twists that genuinely shocked me. I absolutely did not guess the killer or the truth behind the marks.
I do wish we learned a little more about the magic system, but I love the concept of magic only awakening once a couple bonds. Sabine and Azrian’s magic complements each other so well and it’s honestly beautiful.
It does end on a cliffhanger, though not a brutal one, but it builds just enough anticipation for the next book. I can’t wait.
If you’ve ever wanted Bridgerton with magic and a few murders, you’ll love this.
This story follows Sabine and Azriel, who are bound by a mysterious mark that leads them to uncover secrets about the Registry—the powerful force governing their society.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Sabine and Azriel. Their connection developed naturally, and the banter and tension between them kept me engaged the entire time. The twists, secrets, and the way everything slowly unraveled were also really satisfying.
I do wish the magic system had been more developed. The different affinities sounded so interesting, but I wanted a bit more depth and exploration. The structure of the world—the Registry, the Gilt society, the emperor, and all the different roles—was also a little hard to follow at first. It did become clearer as the story went on, but there was a bit of a learning curve in the beginning.
I also appreciated the author’s descriptive writing and how emotions were portrayed, though at times some descriptions felt a little difficult to follow.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. I loved the character dynamics, the unfolding mystery, and the ending—and I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
I was absolutely drawn into this world from the first chapter. If you like period pieces such as Bridgerton, or even Pride and Prejudice, but always wished it was intertwined with a vivid system of magic, then this is your next obsession. You will fall in love with the characters, loathe a few as well, but deep down you'll be rooting for them.
This wonderful work of art leaned into enemies-to-lovers with a slow burn romance between two people who can't stand each other, and what their world wants from them.
The world building here drew me in, and I could entirely picture the scenes. You have unique abilities known as 'affinities', the ton (or in this case the Gilt), but it's made better by the fact that during the social season, there's a murder mystery that they need to work together to solve.
The plots twist in this story like you wouldn't believe, and the betrayal's and unlikely friends had me excited to turn the next page. I'm already looking forward to the next book. Trust me and dive into this story, you won't be disappointed!
What more could a girl want in a book: a murder mystery in a dark romantasy!? Yesssss pleaseeeeee!!
Such an incredible read! I could barely put it down! (And I only did because of work lol) the world building is fantastic with a poetic and expressive (dare I say lyrical!?) style that lent beautifully to the world she created! Speaking of… the vibes were VIBING! The suspense!? Ughhh, I love a period piece/Regency Era read and this was just perfect!
I loveeeee a FMC who in the face of whatever situation comes up, does her literal best! She’s got depth: softness but an anger and rebellion. Sabine is that girl!!! THE BANTER between her and our top tier yearner, dark MMC Azrian was sooo sooooo good! THE TENSION!? The progression of their relationship from the beginning of the book to the end was giving slow burn/enemies to lovers!!!! WE LOVEEEEE!!
If you’re a lover of murder mystery, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, Regency Era and slow burnnnn…I highly recommend reading this book friendsssss!!! ✨
TBAV follows Sabine and Azrian, as the return of marks return unexpectedly while those in court make blood vows. Yet, things are going wrong with them. There is a sickness, a cult of rebels, the Gilt who thrives on high society, and the registry hiding a secret.
My review: I will say I am not usually one to like third person POV, HOWEVER, Ella did an incredible job with still making the reader feel as though they were in the story. I could feel Sabine’s struggle, the worry; Could feel Azrian’s aversion to entering into a blood vow. The betrayal, the plots twists that SHOCK. The research that went in to truly making this seem like the time in which the book is set in was incredible.
If you like bridgerton, this darker version of court life, with magical abilities is the perfect read! I am beyond grateful Ella allowed me to be a part of her street team and cannot wait to continue this series.
This book was an easy five stars! To Break A Vow isn’t just your average fantasy romance. It has all our favorite romantic fantasy tropes, but also includes elements of mystery and suspense. The romance was incredible, and I was on the edge of my seat with the complex characters and unique magic system. We follow Sabine and Azrian as they navigate an arranged marriage neither of them expected or asked for. As the emperor’s right-hand man, Azrian, aka Lord Death, is one of the first to find out about the newlyweds who are mysteriously murdered. Trusting Sabine surprisingly quickly, he decides to fill her in on what’s going on rather than keep it from her, like the emperor would prefer. As soon-to-be newlyweds themselves, will they be able to avoid the same fate? Can they figure out what is going on before it’s too late? And can their arranged marriage become more than hate? I read this book in 3 days and enjoyed every minute!
