Everyone thinks Mary is just a mom. They're wrong. When an EMP kills the grid and chaos erupts, she'll cross a burning city to reach her daughter... even if it means unleashing the woman she spent fifteen years hiding. Some skills you never forget.
Great for a standalone post-EMP survival thriller!
The Last Powered City is a very good standalone post-EMP survival thriller, focusing on a single family and the beaten boy next door as they navigate the treacherous events in the immediate aftermath of an EMP. The writing is very good, especially the main characters, everyone of them is forced to confront past and present trauma if they want to live. Mary, Ann, James and Ted all face many unbelievable tests to make it through the dangerous situations they must navigate. The rest of the writing is excellent. There really is nothing to criticize about The Last Powered City! Overall, 5/5 stars, and fan of apocalyptic, and especially post-EMP survival thrillers will greatly enjoy The Last Powered City!
Almost like 2 different writers. The last parts were tough to read. William, who was described as "revealing a soft, pale body that clearly hadn’t seen much physical activity or sunlight. His heavy belly hung over his grubby jeans, the waistband cutting into the flesh." stole all their meds and took off in the middle of the night & roughly 12 hours later they decide they'll never catch him, even though they have bikes. After seeing t-Dawg is a killing menace they decide to sit around for 2 days fixing fences & let him come to them - ok. t-Dawg shows up with 100 killers with automatic weapons & they are beaten back, even after losing half their people in the river, by a rag tag bunch of preppers. This happens even after t-Dawg's gang surprise attacks them. The final fight was so rushed I thought there would be a 2nd book.

fairly typical of the genre but the authors writing is exceedingly melodramatic and every scene of tension has the characters fighting for breath with hearts beating like drums - the author uses this kind of language over and over again. When characters are being introspective, again there is total melodrama. In short, its best to skip all those passages - which must account for at least one third of the book - and move on. Maybe the author should spend time reading some Hemingway.
Outstanding novel! I am very selective in reading post Apocalyptic books and this one was well worth reading. Believable, flowing plot that kept me engaged throughout. The characters were realistic and well developed. I recommend this book.
This was the best book I have read on emp stories. You can't put the book down. It is thrilling, scary, emotional, edgy. The characters are great. Amazing writing.
I was really moved by the relationship between Mary and her father. After years of separation could their ties be saved. Robert J.Walker has given us anther look at what our world might look like if an EMP should hit our country.
