Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

It’s 11:45 at night and I’m grinning ear to ear! I could not put this book down and staying quiet while my husband was sleeping was nearly impossible!!!! Somehow I managed it but y’all I felt all the emotions, even teared up right at the end. Seriously SUCH a sweet and funny read! 🥰🥰🫠🫠☺️☺️🥹🥹💕💕

Oh my goodness, Brody and Chloe absolute stole my heart and ran off with it faster than the purse snatcher in Barcelona!
I enjoyed every single second and word of this book! From the stunning and adorable meet cute, to their reintroduction, and the beautiful scene at the end with the two of them and the boards . . . I was a complete puddle of giggles and kicking my feet!
The thread of finding worth and identity in Christ and not in those around you was so well done and truly moving! I also loved Brody’s faith journey and how he learned to place his trust in God instead on himself.
My other favorite part of this book was the way Brody treated Chloe with such respect, reverence, and kindness but also how he came to her rescue, ready to defend her at a moments notice!
I can’t come up with enough words to adequately describe how much I love this book! To say that it has become one of my favorite contemporary romances is an understatement! I can’t wait till I can add a physical copy to my bookshelves!

When I first got this book from the publisher to review, I thought that it would be a chore since I don’t like sports at all. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed this refreshing and satisfying love story. This book touched me in all of the right places, and although it didn’t make me a hockey fan, I am a definite fan of this new series! The couple in the story, Brady Kane and Chloe Dawson, are needy of a good relationship and a good kick in the pants to move forward, out of their comfort zone and into a relationship. The fake one that they agree on is nothing short of brilliant, with lots of snafus and interesting coincidences in their lives, including scoffers who want them to prove that the relationship is real. This was an engaging and fun read, light-hearted, with a few sad moments and a lot of honesty shared as the two characters are both narrators who reveal their own shortcomings and dreams of the future. I enjoyed the realistically portrayed flaws and the tongue-in-cheek humor as well. I enjoyed the flirtation, the emotional depth, characters I could really cheer for and the well-crafted and charming plot. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series!

5⭐️ Is this my favorite hockey romance ever? At this point I honestly think so! It may be tied with a couple of others, but man did I enjoy this. It definitely has its flaws, but I don’t care!
The beginning immediately drew me in. Their meet-cute (one of the best, if not the best I’ve ever read), the day they spend together in Barcelona, the circumstances of their relationship after the fact? Oh my gracious day it was all just too good!
I really enjoyed both Brody and Chloe. Were they both frustrating at times and you just wanted to shake their shoulders? Absolutely. I also wished their fake dating was a bit more involved. I don’t even know what I’m trying to say, but you know what I mean right? lol. These qualms obviously didn’t make this anything less than a 5 star read though, because all of their sweet moments they have together made up for it.
My favorite moment in fact has to do with a karaoke machine. I absolutely swooned.
Brody was broody funnily enough. I didn’t think he would be after our first impression of him. But he is just soft for Chloe. And Chloe. Oh all I wanted was for her to succeed at all the things she was trying to do. Her children’s books, her business. She was just the sweetest. Truly the most perfect couple.
This is an imperfect perfect book for me. That seems to be the case when I have 5 star reads. Loved this.

What a fun, refreshing new series by Susan & Sarah May Warren!
I’m really looking forward to reading more from these two authors. They have a way of mixing their two styles that is very delightful!
I’ve loved reading books written by Susan May Warren for many years. All her stories are full of action, suspense, intense drama, and romance. Some of her recent book series have had sweet humor and cozy romance, too. So, this isn’t too much of a change.
I’ve also read a few of Sarah May Warren’s books. When I first started reading her stories, they were cute, quirky, short episodes published monthly. Unfortunately, that platform closed, but my heart was invested in the characters. That was sad, so when I saw that she was writing with her mom and they were going to blend their styles, I knew it would be so fun to read. I was doubly pleased when one of the characters from Sarah’s story was woven into this story. And then there are some of Susan May Warren’s characters from her books that make an appearance, too. What a fun discovery!
I have found that anytime I pick up a book written by Susan May Warren, I will get many life lessons. She has a beautiful way of speaking truth to our souls through her words. It’s woven in such a way that it’s real and natural.
There were also many fun moments. I enjoyed reading about all the ice hockey stuff and all that goes with that sport. I also loved reading about the crazy wedding stuff that Chole was having to plan.

New event coordinator Cloe Dawson has always been the loved but underappreciated, overlooked daughter in her sister's shadow. Brody Kane is a hockey player with a charming fake persona for the cameras, and a father with a gambling and drinking problem. He's lost sight of who he is. Both are carrying invisible weights and it's easy to root for them. It's refreshing for both Brody and Cloe to find someone who really "sees" them, to see the real person and what they're dealing with. They met by chance in Barcelona. Brody loves the fact that Cloe has no idea who he is, and Cloe loves the fact that she is not invisible to him, he really enjoys her company, and then he leaves.....
Months later they meet in Minnesota. Then there's the contract, he needs a girlfriend for his image and she is drowning in debt. It works until it doesn't.
“And being alone because you’re terrified of being hurt? That’s not strength. That’s just fear wearing a different jersey.” Wonderful strategic faith messages wrapped in laugh-out-loud moments makes this a delightful story!

I didn't know that 'hockey' was a genre, but if The Not-So-Neutral Zone is an example, give them all to me! This novel has everything: steamy-but-clean romance, strong writing, realistic characters, important lessons, and redemption.
I'm generally not a fan of books that make me cry - because really, who wants to do more of that? - but The Not-So-Neutral Zone made my cry in the sweetest way. The Warrens put Brody and Chloe in the most impossible situation, causing loads of drama and angst, that it just slides onto you as you both feel and cheer for them.
And the theme of this book? Of being seen for who God made you to be? It's spot-on awesome.
So I'm now a fan of professional hockey and dragon books. Who knew? If you're like me, though, you're going to want to venture into the unknown and give 'The Not-So-Neutral Zone' a try. Trust me. You'll be very glad you did.

This Rom-com was everything you would want - dashing gent and lady with a cute first meeting and fast forward to their second meeting which thrown them in a peculiar situation.
I was smiling and laughing but also felt the heartbreak of the characters. Both main characters had to learn their worth and rise above things and thoughts keeping them hostage.
But what stood out for me was the spiritual depth we also see through the struggles, challenges and questions of the characters.
And the added bonus of Conrad and Wyatt popping up with have fans of prior series feel a taste of home.

Best One Yet this Year! I absolutely adore Brody and Chloe’s story. Hands down such an amazing story.
When Brody is Chloe’s rescuer from her purse being snatched in Barcelona, it’s the beginning of a beautiful relationship between these two. They fall fast and hard but when time runs out and they have to go back to their real lives, they lose touch. Fast forward six months they run into each other at a restaurant. She needs money and he needs help with his image. Together they come up with a plan, a contract but stipulations is no one can know, if anyone finds out they both stand to lose it all. There is so many things in this, Chloe has alway lived in her sister’s shadow and now she’s trying to prove herself worthy of her parents and family’s love. As their fake dating moves along, sparks fly with these two. It soon turns into something real. Can they keep up the charade or will their true feelings turn out the best thing for them.

This was such a fun story!

I wasn’t sure how this book was going to play out in my brain - I’ve been having a YES and NOPE with Warren books…Ugh! There were some really good and special moments in this hockey love story/redemption but also a massive feeling like I missed something somewhere? Missed an explanation 🤷🏼♀️ did not get the whole contract-could get sued thing at all? Also wished there was more of a conclusion to the family dynamics - out of nowhere things were “fixed”? Bummed - cuz this could’ve been so much more.

Brodie and Chloe forever! From first meeting to the last this book is loaded with chemistry. When Brodie sees a thief take a beautiful woman's purse he runs after him and gets it back. Chloe is amazed and very grateful for the very attractive man that brings back her purse. After an incredibly romantic day spent together Chloe is left with no number, no last name, nothing.

Swoon!
Fake romances are one of my favorite tropes, and this one adds in some incredible nuances that raise the stakes exponentially.
Chloe and Brody are so realistic. Both have relatable family situation that haunt them. And the complications are perfectly timed to keep me turning pages, breathless for the resolution.
I loved this couple from the first scene when Brody swoops in “like Batman” to rescue her purse from a thief. Talk about swoon-worthy moments.
When you can wrap characters to root for into believable scenarios with just the right sprinkle of a faith journey, you’ve hooked me. Thanks Sarah and Susie May!

This is a story that has it all. Hockey, a fake relationship turned real, romance, and a message. The characters are well written and the story grabbed me from the start. I've always loved the books by Susan May Warren. This series, written with her daughter, just made the book even better. I can't wait until the next one!

The Not-So-Neutral Zone is vintage Susan May Warren. Add in the new voice of her daughter Sarah, and you get a fresh, contemporary tone that still holds its own against the Deep Haven novels, the Christiansen saga, and the stories that made me love Susie May in the first place. That said, this new Blue Ox Boys series has a flavor all its own.
Chloe Dawson is the kind of heroine I can relate to on multiple levels. We're both writers, yes. But more than that, we both have a whimsical, idealistic side to our personalities that we've tried to mask or subdue because we've learned life, and other people, don't appreciate it. With this in mind, I loved watching Chloe come into her own, not only creatively, but as a person. It sometimes reads as if she needed Brody before she could do that, which...I'm not sure that always works. But considering that she and Brody work so well together and on their own, I can certainly handwave any slight misgivings.
Brody, too, is a well-developed hero, and one I haven't seen from Warren-affiliated books in a while. As Chloe, Derek, Coach Jacobsen, and others say, Brody is a charmer. His image and character are built on that, on sanguine and easygoing responses, rather than military prowess or traditional toughness. Thus, his "deeper" side was always fun to see, and I truly enjoyed rooting for him, as well as Chloe, to find out who he was. I think Brody captures the essence of a question I've asked myself before and I'd venture many others have, too: Who's the real me, and who's the mask? What's the mask, and what are the parts of myself I'm comfortable with but have learned to use like armor?
These questions feed into some spiritual threads that are mostly subtle, unless we're speaking directly to the influence or lack of faith in someone's life. That may or may not work, which I'll get to in a minute. That said, these spiritual threads feel like a snow shower after a sweltering summer. They're straightforward. They're refreshing in their honesty. They're simple: no deep theological wrestling, no subtle nods that don't go anywhere. Finding that middle ground is hard, and I think Susie and Sarah mostly hit it.
The settings, the secondary characters, and the secondary conflicts (Brody's hockey career and its trajectory, the meeting in Barcelona, the "contract itself" are all classic rom-com. And while I'm not usually the biggest fan of fake dating, it works here because from the jump, we're dealing with two honest, decent people who acknowledge, "This is a bad idea. There's no good way through this. But I literally don't have any options, so I'm counting on you to help me." That's a more refreshing take than I've probably ever seen on fake dating. Yes, it's comedic at times. Yes, we get the ramifications we've been conditioned to expect. But here, no one is *trying* to enact any tropes, to be too light or too serious. I usually felt like I was inside "Hallmark with an extra icy frozen cocoa."
I would've liked to see Chloe and Brody's character arcs go a bit deeper in various small spots. This is particularly true of Chloe, because her conflicts with her family and the expectations of her vs. Maya are great. But compared to what Brody is experiencing, Chloe's arc feels just slightly thin. Also, again, I know this book works on a trope and thus, there are scenes, there are beats, it has to hit. Still, I'd have appreciated a bit more depth, a bit more of a twist than, "This started fake, but now it's real."
That being said, The Not-So-Neutral Zone is the most fun I've had with a book in a while, considering I'm usually diving into Biblical or historical epics. Sometimes I guess you just need a mental break, a mental cocoa. This is what this book was, but it wasn't "fluffy" or "silly." If anything, it made me put the second book on my wish list right away. I can't wait to see where these "boys" go next. Go, Blue Ox--and go, Warren ladies!

I knew after the opening heroic scene that I was toast. Brody Kane stole my heart. I knew Chloe was going to be a wonderful character to get to know as well. And what better place to find romance than Barcelona. It does not get much more romantic.
I giggled like a teenage girl, grinned and even frowned a few times, but most importantly I immensely enjoyed every single page of this phenomenal book. I love a good hockey romance, even though I am not really a hockey fan. Trust me when I say that you do not have to enjoy hockey to love this story of two wounded souls.
Brody, for all of his brusqueness, needed someone to love him and appreciate him, not for what he could give them or do for them, but simply love him for who he was. He was constantly in the spotlight, and this puts pressure on a person while wondering is this who the person really is. Chloe could see underneath that armor, that he wore so proudly, to the hurting man beneath it.
Chloe, on the other hand, has been overlooked and dismissed all of her life. She had no spotlights on her. She just lived her best life to the best of her abilities. I felt such empathy for this kind soul. She had a heart of gold and cared about others so much. She was also wildly talented.
This beautiful love story, with the ups and downs, will burn its way into your heart with lovable, not just likable, characters that you will cheer for.
The faith message was wonderful as well, as they learned their worth was in Christ, not in what others thought of them.
I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful story except to say that you do not want to miss this one.

The Not-So-Neutral Zone is such a fun Christian hockey romance. I didn’t think I was into hockey romance, but this series has me hooked. I can not wait for the next book in this series.
The story starts off with the perfect meet-cute in Barcelona. Someone has stolen Chole’s purse, and Brody swoops in and gets the purse back. Then Chole finds herself missing her cruise and spends the day with Broody. Even though he is supposed to be getting his father out of a jam. At the end of their time, they split ways, but their hearts seem to be left behind.
Six months later, Brody still can not get Chole out of his head. He finds her on social media and shows up where she recently posted. Chole is in full-on planning mode, planning her sister’s wedding, but still can’t stop thinking about Broody. When he walks into the coffee shop, she is shocked. Then she realizes that Brody is none other than Brody "Candy" Kane, the hockey player. This is when a plan is formulated. Brody needs a girlfriend to help with some press. Chole needs a date for her sister’s wedding and could use the cash that Brody is offering. The contract is drawn up, and the “relationship” begins. Through it all, they both fall harder for each other. Both Brody and Chole are dealing with some personal issues. Chole feels like a failure because her business is not working and is often overlooked. Brody is working on not just showing the world his Candy Kane, sweet side, but being real with people as well as dealing with his father’s gambling and drinking. Not only is this cover so fun and gorgeous, the story also has those same vibes!! I loved it right from the get-go!
I loved the characters! The story is set with a fun meet-cute between Chloe and Brody. In Barcelona (can it GET anymore romantic?!). Unfortunately, they part ways and don't know if they'll ever see each other again.
Then...quite unexpectedly, months later, their paths cross again. And. Then. The fun begins!
This fake dating trope is so much fun, and this author pair does it well!

Fast forward six months and they run into each other again in Minnesota, and Chloe realizes who Brody is. The trouble is, Brody is in need of some help with his image...enter a contract, a fake relationship...and some complicated feelings. Of course both Chloe and Brody have their own insecurities that they need to overcome. Chloe lives in the shadow of her sister, and Brody has a difficult time being vulnerable after years of creating a public image. They learn that what really matters is who God made them to be, and not what the world thinks. I was rooting for this couple who find themselves in an impossible situation. I never cry when I read a book...but this story made me tear up because I could feel the emotions of the characters coming through every page. Brody Kane, ladies and gentlemen!! *Happy sigh* He's the reason I was thoroughly glued to the story from the first page and was pretty reluctant to set it down. He had me grinning like a fool, cheering for his team along the way, and rooting for him and Chloe Dawson every step of their journey. These two were adorable together, yet their HEA is hard-won. I should have seen it coming, knowing who was half of this author duo, but I still didn't realize how high-stakes this book would be. Still, it made for a riveting read that kept me wondering how everything was going to play out while enjoying every laugh-out-loud moment, every romantic gesture, or swoony line.
Don't get me wrong, this book deals with some sensitive topics, like an alcoholic and gambling father, emotional scars from parents' abandonment or neglect for both MCs, or a main character who deals with dyslexia, to name a few. And yet, it's a testament to the authors' writing skills that they treated it all in a real but respectful way, perfectly balancing the seriousness of these issues with more light-hearted moments.
So, if you're looking for your next sweet hockey romance fix that features flawed characters, a team you'll want to root for, family drama, Christian undertones, and some swoony romance, don't look further than this one! I can't wait for the next book in the Blue Ox series! ~ 5 stars

Still, it made for a riveting read that kept me wondering how everything was going to play out while enjoying every laugh-out-loud moment, every romantic gesture, or swoony line.
Don't get me wrong, this book deals with some sensitive topics, like an alcoholic and gambling father, emotional scars from parents' abandonment or neglect for both MCs, or a main character who deals with dyslexia, to name a few. And yet, it's a testament to the authors' writing skills that they treated it all in a real but respectful way, perfectly balancing the seriousness of these issues with more light-hearted moments.
So, if you're looking for your next sweet hockey romance fix that features flawed characters, a team you'll want to root for, family drama, Christian undertones, and some swoony romance, don't look further than this one! I can't wait for the next book in the Blue Ox series! ~ 5 stars

another win for team Warren!
This one was a bit different, but still excellent. I’m generally not a fan of first person narratives, for me to stick with it, it’s got to be good. It didn’t grab me at page one like pretty much all of Susie’s book do, however, since I trust and love her writing I stuck with it. It didn’t long for the story to suck me in and I ended up reading way too long at times when I should have been doing other things.
Brody and Chloe are victims of being trapped by other’s expectations. Her, by her family, him by hockey hierarchy, family dynamics and social media. They are both struggling with how to be real and not live their lives trapped by other’s expectations and criticisms. In the end they are able to let go of those things controlling them and be who God meant them to be. And of course follow their hearts to each other. I hope we’ll see glimpses of them in the next book.
It also shows the destructed power of social media and corporate control of personal lives.
Hopefully, this will also be released in audiobook format. With good narration this story could really come alive.

I would love to give this book a sixth star!!! My new favorite hockey book and player from one of my OG teams!!!
I have loved the Blue Ox since Jace Jacobson in It Had to Be You. And I was sooooooo excited that he was the Coach in this book and that Wyatt Marshall and Conrad Kingston are still on the ice too! It immediately felt like home!:)
Brody and Chloe were such a sweet couple to start this new series with. I absolutely loved everything about them. Their meeting in Barcelona, their reconnection, the fake dating, how they fell for each other and everything in between! I loved how both of them grew throughout the story as well!
The little God moments were woven in so beautifully throughout the story and I loved how it gave both of them a push to believe their relationship would work. I loved this dive back into Susan's romance stories (without all the suspense that I love!) and Sarah's voice adds a new layer to the story as well!
All in all, I loved it, I cannot wait for the next book and I hope there are many, many, many more Blue Ox books planned for the future!
