I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

1. He said he thought about trying to find her after Barcelona, but didn't have her last name. Except when she introduced herself, she said, "Chloe. Chloe Dawson." So, uh, yeah.
2. The whole Ashley thing? Annoying. I get that it's why he and Chloe make the arrangement, but it's still annoying. Why would he give Ashley his number so he can approve the piece about him? Wouldn't it go through his agent or PR person or the team he plays for or their PR person? He also admits he flirted a little, because that's what he does with the media. Right. Just the women, though, of course. Because it can stay completely professional with the men as they do their job, but with the women, that's not possible. Flirting has to be done because you're a man and they're a woman and heaven forbid it stay strictly professional. Wow. Insulting much? Connected to that, it's stated that Ashley shared their messages. If Brody was only "media person flirty" and otherwise professional, wouldn't said screenshots prove Ashley is exaggerating? Since it became a whole image in need of repair issue, I'm assuming it wasn't so innocent. And yet, he supposedly couldn't stop thinking about Chloe. Riiiiiiiight.
3. Also, yeah, that's exactly what Chloe wants to hear. She's been hurt since he ghosted her in Barcelona and wishes things had been different and, while he claims to regret doing so, and not having a way to contact her, and not being able to stop thinking about her, he's "flirting" with another woman. But it's okay because she's part of the media and that means he has to flirt. Stop with this.
4. I find it a bit weird that Maya, Chloe's older sister and Derek's fiancee, knows that part of Derek's issue with Brody, his current teammate and past one during college, is because they both liked a girl and she chose Brody. Who, according to Derek, Brody didn't even like that much. This, apparently, makes Brody a womanizer. Even though there has never been any scandal or talk of such a trait. Derek is telling his fiancee he's still upset numerous years later about a girl not picking him. Uhhhhhh. Which, by the way, is never discussed between Derek and Brody when Derek apologizes and extends an olive branch.
5. Ended abruptly. Yes, they exchanged I love yous again, agreed this is it, and then...nothing. i wanted to see at least a little of the aftermath.

It’s 11:45 at night and I’m grinning ear to ear! I could not put this book down and staying quiet while my husband was sleeping was nearly impossible!!!! Somehow I managed it but y’all I felt all the emotions, even teared up right at the end. Seriously SUCH a sweet and funny read! 🥰🥰🫠🫠☺️☺️🥹🥹💕💕

Oh my goodness, Brody and Chloe absolute stole my heart and ran off with it faster than the purse snatcher in Barcelona!
I enjoyed every single second and word of this book! From the stunning and adorable meet cute, to their reintroduction, and the beautiful scene at the end with the two of them and the boards . . . I was a complete puddle of giggles and kicking my feet!
The thread of finding worth and identity in Christ and not in those around you was so well done and truly moving! I also loved Brody’s faith journey and how he learned to place his trust in God instead on himself.
My other favorite part of this book was the way Brody treated Chloe with such respect, reverence, and kindness but also how he came to her rescue, ready to defend her at a moments notice!
I can’t come up with enough words to adequately describe how much I love this book! To say that it has become one of my favorite contemporary romances is an understatement! I can’t wait till I can add a physical copy to my bookshelves!

5⭐️ Is this my favorite hockey romance ever? At this point I honestly think so! It may be tied with a couple of others, but man did I enjoy this. It definitely has its flaws, but I don’t care!
The beginning immediately drew me in. Their meet-cute (one of the best, if not the best I’ve ever read), the day they spend together in Barcelona, the circumstances of their relationship after the fact? Oh my gracious day it was all just too good!
I really enjoyed both Brody and Chloe. Were they both frustrating at times and you just wanted to shake their shoulders? Absolutely. I also wished their fake dating was a bit more involved. I don’t even know what I’m trying to say, but you know what I mean right? lol. These qualms obviously didn’t make this anything less than a 5 star read though, because all of their sweet moments they have together made up for it.
My favorite moment in fact has to do with a karaoke machine. I absolutely swooned.
Brody was broody funnily enough. I didn’t think he would be after our first impression of him. But he is just soft for Chloe. And Chloe. Oh all I wanted was for her to succeed at all the things she was trying to do. Her children’s books, her business. She was just the sweetest. Truly the most perfect couple.
This is an imperfect perfect book for me. That seems to be the case when I have 5 star reads. Loved this.

This completely exceeded my expectations. Adorable is an understatement and the message behind it at the end had me tearing up! What drew me in the most was the narration-style; in my opinion it is ideal for contemporary. The settings were always described so well too! The writing style just gave me everything I want in each scene as the reader. This was light-hearted with the perfect amount of depth, and hockey!
Brody was the perfect amount of broody/grumpy for relatable and justifiable reasons. And he was so consistently soft for Chloe that the reader gets perfectly paced glimpses of who his character truly is under his persona. And Chloe was totally endearing. It would be hard not to love her! She's a character you want the best for. This made me smile a ton. Brody and Chloe are now one of my favorite fictional couples!
I think this story worked so well because it's not perfect. It just felt real and down-to-earth to me honestly. I could picture the writing extremely well and the main characters felt like real people. I really loved how the authors unfurled details as the story progressed. The reader learns things as the characters learn them about each other--it felt natural. I have to admit the contract around the fake dating confused me for a while, but the authors pulled it off somehow and it still worked, and I still had five star feelings by the end, so I'm not complaining haha. This will probably be one of the best hockey romances I ever read. The mini teaser in the epilogue introducing the next book's FMC was super fun and smart too. I will definitely be reading it!

When I first got this book from the publisher to review, I thought that it would be a chore since I don’t like sports at all. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed this refreshing and satisfying love story. This book touched me in all of the right places, and although it didn’t make me a hockey fan, I am a definite fan of this new series! The couple in the story, Brady Kane and Chloe Dawson, are needy of a good relationship and a good kick in the pants to move forward, out of their comfort zone and into a relationship. The fake one that they agree on is nothing short of brilliant, with lots of snafus and interesting coincidences in their lives, including scoffers who want them to prove that the relationship is real. This was an engaging and fun read, light-hearted, with a few sad moments and a lot of honesty shared as the two characters are both narrators who reveal their own shortcomings and dreams of the future. I enjoyed the realistically portrayed flaws and the tongue-in-cheek humor as well. I enjoyed the flirtation, the emotional depth, characters I could really cheer for and the well-crafted and charming plot. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series!

Wow! I really enjoyed that! I was hooked and read way past midnight to finish it up. The writing style of this author was amazing and the plot was so good. My favorite scence was the couples guessing game, cause I love watching it on YouTube for Christian couples!
Why it wasn’t a complete four or five star was honestly cause I really didn’t like either of the main characters. TBH they both were annoying and red flags. I thought they really didn’t belong in a relationship and needed therapy and the MMC a relationship with God. I still didn’t ship them at the end of the book bc I still thought they were dysfunctional 🫣. I think if I would have liked both characters this would have been an all time favorite book bc the plot was just so good!
So I didn’t love the characters but the plot, pacing, and writing style were fantastic! And just look at that gorgeous cover!!! 🤩 So would I recommend this book? Absolutely! I think that if you enjoyed My Favorite Color is Your Something Blue by Eva Austin you would really like this! I personally didn’t love that book but the setting really reminded me of it.

This book was a Rollercoaster. I started out not enjoying it, since I've never been a fan of insta-love. But then it got better! Then it got annoying again 😅
What I liked:
I enjoyed the romance, it was very sweet. And I enjoyed Brody's Dad, Maya, Conrad, Derek, and Penny. Brody and Chloe were good, also, but there were also times where they were frustrating.
I liked the few bits of Christianity we got in the book, but it felt inconsistent, like Christianity was in the background most of the time.
I enjoyed the hockey aspect more than I thought I would, actually. I don't like sports, I usually find them boring, but this was fun!
The ending was adorable, specifically chapter 18. That chapter helped raise my rating, actually.
What I didn't like:
Miscommunication. Lots of miscommunication. It's one of the worst tropes in fiction.
I get that Brody was going through a lot: his dad's problems, his performance in hockey, the lawsuit from Ashley, and the guilt from leaving Chloe behind in Barcelona. I can see why he'd be stuck in his head, but it would have been good, I think, if Chloe had sprinkled in the Bible at first, then started becoming more persistent. Brody could have softened slowly, then come to the faith by the end. That would have been so good! Instead he goes back and forth between being brave enough to love Chloe and then being too scared. And I get it, growth isn't always linear. But the constant back and forth was a little much. Maybe a chapter or two when he goes back and forth would have been less frustrating.
Chloe had some development, but it also felt like it all happened suddenly. Brody, in my opinion, was more balanced.
I also didn't understand the contract at all. Why break up at the end and make Brody look like the bad guy if the whole point of this deal was for him to save his image? It makes no sense to me.

I also didn't understand the contract at all. Why break up at the end and make Brody look like the bad guy if the whole point of this deal was for him to save his image? It makes no sense to me.

Plot- Dumbest premise ever.
Like, legit SO STUPID.
Here it is:
- Hockey pro falls for a girl. Ghosts her for no reason.
[Make it make sense.]
- He has a heart-breaker rep that his coach/agent has an issue with.
[Why? He has no sexual assault allegations. Why do they care if he’s a flirt??]
- Anyway, his agent wants him to get a girlfriend for his image.
[Whatever. Just go with it.]
- By the way, he is playing like crap on the ice.
[The book gives play by play mess-ups and makes him seem entirely INEPT at his sport. This so-called professional athlete can’t keep his head in the game AT ALL. It’s pretty cringy.]
- Still pining for the girl he ghosted. Runs into her and suggests they fake date.
[Why? Why fake date? Why not just real date? The obvious, natural response was to say “Sorry for ghosting you. I’m still interested. Give me a second chance?”]
- Makes it worse by offering to pay her and make a legit contract out of it.
[This has disaster written all over it. Legal contract involving money. This would be a huge scandal if leaked. And it’s completely unnecessary in the first place. *face palm*]
- He agrees that to end their fake dating contract, they will stage a public blow-up where he is the offending party and the FMC is the victim.
[Say what? I thought the purpose of this scheme was to salvage your image as a nice guy…? Ending it like that would obliterate any progress made toward that end. I am SO CONFUSED right now. Are we losing sight of the entire reason we are doing this???]

Before the boy ghosted her, she could tell he was emotionally pulling away and she stooped so low as to say the dreaded, “Did I do something wrong?”

So yeah, she has a pathetic vibe going on.

What a fun, refreshing new series by Susan & Sarah May Warren!
I’m really looking forward to reading more from these two authors. They have a way of mixing their two styles that is very delightful!
I’ve loved reading books written by Susan May Warren for many years. All her stories are full of action, suspense, intense drama, and romance. Some of her recent book series have had sweet humor and cozy romance, too. So, this isn’t too much of a change.
I’ve also read a few of Sarah May Warren’s books. When I first started reading her stories, they were cute, quirky, short episodes published monthly. Unfortunately, that platform closed, but my heart was invested in the characters. That was sad, so when I saw that she was writing with her mom and they were going to blend their styles, I knew it would be so fun to read. I was doubly pleased when one of the characters from Sarah’s story was woven into this story. And then there are some of Susan May Warren’s characters from her books that make an appearance, too. What a fun discovery!
I have found that anytime I pick up a book written by Susan May Warren, I will get many life lessons. She has a beautiful way of speaking truth to our souls through her words. It’s woven in such a way that it’s real and natural.
There were also many fun moments. I enjoyed reading about all the ice hockey stuff and all that goes with that sport. I also loved reading about the crazy wedding stuff that Chole was having to plan.

This Rom-com was everything you would want - dashing gent and lady with a cute first meeting and fast forward to their second meeting which thrown them in a peculiar situation.
I was smiling and laughing but also felt the heartbreak of the characters. Both main characters had to learn their worth and rise above things and thoughts keeping them hostage.
But what stood out for me was the spiritual depth we also see through the struggles, challenges and questions of the characters.
And the added bonus of Conrad and Wyatt popping up with have fans of prior series feel a taste of home.

This was a cute read and I'm not even a hockey fan. It made me want book 2 asap because I actually love the setting and characters. The meet cute was adorable, Brody remembering the exact details of her outfit was adorable, the protectiveness, the angst, the banter and wit - it was all so good.
The characters are supposedly mid-to-late twenties. They acted and thought a lot younger than they seemed, which threw me off for a good part of the book. The other hangup I had was that I feel like something big was missed - like, how could either party be sued/lose their entire career due to this contract? It's almost like you have to read between the lines to figure some stuff out. But maybe I read too fast and did actually miss something, idk.
Anyway, plot holes aside, I did really enjoy myself and will definitely pick up the next book in the series!

Best One Yet this Year! I absolutely adore Brody and Chloe’s story. Hands down such an amazing story.
When Brody is Chloe’s rescuer from her purse being snatched in Barcelona, it’s the beginning of a beautiful relationship between these two. They fall fast and hard but when time runs out and they have to go back to their real lives, they lose touch. Fast forward six months they run into each other at a restaurant. She needs money and he needs help with his image. Together they come up with a plan, a contract but stipulations is no one can know, if anyone finds out they both stand to lose it all. There is so many things in this, Chloe has alway lived in her sister’s shadow and now she’s trying to prove herself worthy of her parents and family’s love. As their fake dating moves along, sparks fly with these two. It soon turns into something real. Can they keep up the charade or will their true feelings turn out the best thing for them.

I didn't know that 'hockey' was a genre, but if The Not-So-Neutral Zone is an example, give them all to me! This novel has everything: steamy-but-clean romance, strong writing, realistic characters, important lessons, and redemption.

The Warrens put Brody and Chloe in the most impossible situation, causing loads of drama and angst, that it just slides onto you as you both feel and cheer for them.
And the theme of this book? Of being seen for who God made you to be? It's spot-on awesome.

I wasn’t sure how this book was going to play out in my brain - I’ve been having a YES and NOPE with Warren books…Ugh! There were some really good and special moments in this hockey love story/redemption but also a massive feeling like I missed something somewhere? Missed an explanation 🤷🏼♀️ did not get the whole contract-could get sued thing at all? Also wished there was more of a conclusion to the family dynamics - out of nowhere things were “fixed”? Bummed - cuz this could’ve been so much more.

I’m not usually a big fan of the fake dating trope but this is a delightful story. Both characters have issues with family, some of which are resolved and some hint at improvement (while some aren’t fully addressed by the end). The meet cute was a little too gushy, and the contract was a little too unrealistic, but it all worked because the H/H were so good together. :-)

I am dreading writing this review cause this book did sadly disappoint me 🩵 I don't know if I could've finished it without the support of my bookclub girlies! Don't get me wrong, the two main characters Brody & Chloe... LOVE them together and as individuals. Unfortunately I don't think their special connection or character arcs got the story they deserved or complete growth follow through. The beginning of the book was golden, the ending was so swoony, but the parts in-between that I loved were sparse. Basically only when Brody and Chloe got to be real and honest was I happy! It was literally an emotional ride, and not the good kind haha with so much BAD communication! YES one of those books lol This was a fake dating trope, which I never quite enjoy due to the lieing, but it was the inconsistencies and mood swings that ruined it for me. This book also involves a contract, one you will discover for yourself if you read it, and it's also the villian of the book (which never felt fully necessary). Nothing could be enjoyed without the dread of the contract as the main tension. The characters have so much depth that we started to explore, but sadly again, the contract would overshadow a lot of the character growth or true resolutions. I was left wanting at the end by some conflicts or struggles never getting resolved fully or to the extent you would desire as an invested reader- important ones! There is extreme inconsistency in emotions and character behavior, especially in that dreaded middle I mentioned. The authors didn't connect actions with emotions clearly enough and you're often left wondering why a characters feelings or behavior has changed so drastically from chapter to chapter or even paragraph to paragraph. You have to read between the lines to assume sometimes. TBH I often felt confused by the shift in directions and that just really pulls you out of the story. Not to mention, the love was stunted the majority of the book and it just didn't give me the sports rom com I was looking for or promised. So much potential and so much chemistry... I wanted more 🩵 I'm sorry to say. Lastly, I think the whole book needed more Jesus. He comes through in the end thankfully 🙏🏻 but it fell so flat most of the book spiritually. Chloe and Brody do get their HEA but not without a lot of pain and unnecessary confusion in between. I'm grateful to have met Chloe and Brody because I adored their potential, I'm just sad this didn't do it for me. Lots of reviews say otherwise. See for yourself. It's worth at least knowing these characters during the good times lol

I have a new hockey romance series obsession, and ooohhh it's a good one! 😍 The Not So Neutral Zone kicks off The Blue Ox Boys series by Susan May Warren & her daughter, Sarah May. The Blue Ox team was first introduced in Susan May Warren's Minnesota Kingstons romantic suspense series, which I read - and loved - last year.
This book is a return to form for SMW - in absence of her trademark suspense, this story leans hard into the romance & the YEARNING. I loved these characters so much: both struggle with the weight of expectations, fear of disappointing people, and the soul-deep desire to be SEEN for their truest selves.
Chloe's struggle with self-image and finding purpose broke my heart but I loved seeing her grow so much! (Though I confess, her clueless family barely squeaked thru redeeming themselves at the end!) And Brody's struggles to balance the responsibility of fame with his own fear of being vulnerable & known resonated - especially given his father's history of addiction & Brody's drive to "fix" & present the "acceptable" image to the world. I also deeply appreciated the dyslexia rep!
This is a love story about two perfectly imperfect, hurting souls who've yet to realize they've each always been enough. Their worth ultimately not define by their accomplishments or relationship, but in their identity in Christ. From the sweet first meeting, through all the challenges, to the awesome HEA, I so enjoyed this romantic comedy.
New event coordinator Cloe Dawson has always been the loved but underappreciated, overlooked daughter in her sister's shadow. Brody Kane is a hockey player with a charming fake persona for the cameras, and a father with a gambling and drinking problem. He's lost sight of who he is. Both are carrying invisible weights and it's easy to root for them. It's refreshing for both Brody and Cloe to find someone who really "sees" them, to see the real person and what they're dealing with. They met by chance in Barcelona. Brody loves the fact that Cloe has no idea who he is, and Cloe loves the fact that she is not invisible to him, he really enjoys her company, and then he leaves.....
Months later they meet in Minnesota. Then there's the contract, he needs a girlfriend for his image and she is drowning in debt. It works until it doesn't.

From the sweet first meeting, through all the challenges, to the awesome HEA, I so enjoyed this romantic comedy.
New event coordinator Cloe Dawson has always been the loved but underappreciated, overlooked daughter in her sister's shadow. Brody Kane is a hockey player with a charming fake persona for the cameras, and a father with a gambling and drinking problem. He's lost sight of who he is. Both are carrying invisible weights and it's easy to root for them. It's refreshing for both Brody and Cloe to find someone who really "sees" them, to see the real person and what they're dealing with. They met by chance in Barcelona. Brody loves the fact that Cloe has no idea who he is, and Cloe loves the fact that she is not invisible to him, he really enjoys her company, and then he leaves.....
Months later they meet in Minnesota. Then there's the contract, he needs a girlfriend for his image and she is drowning in debt. It works until it doesn't.
