Alyssa Reed has always been a problem solver and a fan of the long con. So, when the justice system fails her best friend, Alyssa takes it upon herself to set things right. And as far as Alyssa is concerned, setting things right means killing the hockey players who assaulted her friend.
There’s just a minor problem, and it’s not means or motive. It’s opportunity and access. But when Alyssa snags a date with the team’s head coach, Mark Eriksson—after stalking him for weeks, shh!—access to the team may no longer be a barrier to entry. At least, not if she can convince Mark she’s serious about him.
When hockey players start dropping like flies and Mark becomes increasingly suspicious, Alyssa has to decide if it’s just great sex that makes her want to trust Mark or if her feelings for him have outlived the long con and evolved into something more than a means to an end.
Sam Evans has lived all over the US but currently resides in the upper midwest. She’s a software engineer by day, but letting her imagination run wild is her full-time occupation. She lives with her partner, a high-strung border collie, and an insane kelpie. She routinely drinks too much coffee and gets too little sleep.
Alyssa Reed has always been a problem solver and a fan of the long con. So, when the justice system fails her best friend, Alyssa takes it upon herself to set things right. And as far as Alyssa is concerned, setting things right means killing the hockey players who assaulted her friend.
Kill the Puckers was an unhinged, woman seeking rightful revenge on behalf of her best friend, dark romance that was pleasant as hell.
Alyssa was a strong FMC and I liked her character very much. She was unapologetically real and knew what needed to be done to get her best friend the justice Katie deserved. She just wanted bad men to pay and honestly I couldn’t help but root for her. Her anger was raw and real and that made her actions just that much more sweet to witness. She planned, she had help from a side character, Vaughn, and did whatever she needed to do to get the job done. She honestly thought her revenge plan would be easy enough yet she wasn’t anticipating Mark, our MMC.
Mark was an exceptional MMC and I think him and Alyssa fit so well together. They weren’t overly lovey-dovey but you could still feel their chemistry. Their relationship was enjoyable to see unfold. It had me laughing because their love language was shit talking each other (Alyssa was the queen of this). Watching Alyssa go from seeing Mark as just a means to an end to then see her falling for the mark, well… it was beautiful to read about. I do wish their romance delved a bit deeper. I feel like we just got the tip of the iceberg of the romance that AlyssaMark could’ve really been. But I do take into consideration that this book focused a bit more on the revenge than the romance.
This book easily held my interest throughout and it even had me feeling nerves while we read about each kill. I was intrigued and wondering if Alyssa was going to go through with this kill and if or when she would get caught. I think this book focused more on the revenge killing plot but the romance throughout it was definitely enough for romance readers to enjoy. Sam Evans did a remarkable job on romance, revenge and even more serious topics while also not sensationalizing sexual assault.
Overall, I give this book a 4/5 stars.
Thank you Super Gravity Press LLC for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
It gives me Black Sheep by Alexa Harlowe and Brynne Weaver Vibes. I really like Alyssa trying to protect who she sees as her sister in a morally grey way, when the way we are often told is correct and just, fails them. I think most ask what if and don’t act. So, I enjoyed a story where they did. I felt a little sorry for Mark at first. Then I didn’t. I liked that hints were dropped as the story progressed but didn’t outright say anything about Mark’s thoughts. And the situation at the end earns Mark a Star ⭐️. I’d read other books by Sam, I’d read more if there were others in the series. Ps. I really like and appreciate the afterword.
Dark rom-com might be one of my absolut favorite genres! The combination of romance (and spice), banter, dark themes, morally grey characters and action packed storyline just works for me!
What a sensational read! Alyssa is everything you could want from a strong FMC. She's smart, she's deadly and most importantly, she doesn't need a man to save her. I couldn't put this book down, the plot was incredibly strong , the characters were so real (you loved some & you HATED some) and the spice was spicy 🔥 Sam Evans, this book is a resounding triumph and you've highlighted an epidemic within sports that shouldn't exist. I applaud you and your voice 👏
Kill the Puckers was a fantastic read overall. I thoroughly enjoyed every second and found it difficult to put down. I went into this book expecting a fun, lighthearted, spicy read and while it definitely delivers it also was so emotionally engaging and powerful.
The story follows Alyssa, who takes it upon herself to get revenge on a group of hockey players that assaulted her cousin when the justice system failed to deliver.
What really sets this story apart is Alyssa’s need to right a wrong. Her determination fuels the emotional core of this book and despite unaliving people she is someone you root for from the very first chapter. She’s strong, vulnerable, compassionate and determined. Watching her refuse to back down even when it would have been easier to stay quiet, gave the story real substance.
The chemistry and romance between Alyssa and Mark is intense and passionate, it never felt as if it overshadowed or took away from the main plot. Mark is a fantastic character, he’s layered, supportive and actually invested in Alyssa and what she’s fighting for. He never tries to overpower her fight or get her to stop, instead he stands beside her. The spice between the two is absolutely delicious and so well written, no notes at all.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Author for allowing me to read this as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book was SO good. Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC!
TW: R*pe Gruesome Violence (on page) Kidnapping Arson Stalking
I like the “ripped from the headlines” aspect of this story, because no one should forget what those 5 players in Canada (*allegedly) did to that 20 y/o woman. Unfortunately this story starts out in a similar fashion, with all 5 being acquitted. That brings us our FMC, Dr. Reed. I loved her justice! There were so many genuinely hilarious parts to this story, but seeing the survivor push through the terror and working to take back control of her life was beautiful, even if we only see it in small pieces. Our MMC, Mark, seemed like a real jackass at first but I quickly grew to love their insane banter.
The best, sneakiest part of the story though? The arena where the Portland Black Bears play, is Tofana Arena. As in Giulia Tofana, the notorious poison dealer of 1600’s Italy, who worked with women all across the county to rid themselves of their abusive husbands. While it’s possible that’s incidental… I doubt it. The writing was so good and so clever!
The one thing that made this a 4.97 for me what the reference about 250 pages in that they had only been together 1.5 months when 3 players had died when it had to have been at least two months. The timing was just off.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is about Alyssa's cousin Katie, who is raped by 5 hockey players. She goes to the police, does all the things your meant to do, and it goes to court. And they walk free.
So Alyssa sets off to right that wrong, and make them pay.
She does this in a number of creative and well planned out ways... mostly.
She begins with setting up a honey trap, with someone who works with the team so she has access...and whats better then the coach? What she didn't expect was finding out this dude is kinda nice and she likes him. Alot.
This book has alot of spice, talk of rape, and lots of murder- but thats ok cos those puckers deserve it.
Now, this book is funny. I laughed out loud at least 3 times during the first few chapters. There was this scene where Alyssa has followed her potential in to the team to a bookstore, and what book did he have under his arm? Only one of the author's actual other books! 😂
The writing style was funny and well thought out.
If you like a dark romance with an empowered FMC who teaches those bad guys a lesson, then this is the book for you.
☠️Fake Dating 🖤He falls first ☠️Stalking 🖤Feminine Rage ☠️Murder
"you fell for a mark named Mark"
Kill the Puckers is a dark hockey romance with comedy, murder and a lot of sex (It literally says so in the trigger warnings) It follows the story of Alyssa Reed psychiatrist who is hell bent on getting revenge for her cousin and the only way to do that is to fake date the head coach of the hockey thats players ruined her cousins life. Only thing she did not anticipate is: falling in love.
My thoughts: OMG!!! when I say I loved this book, i loved it so much I devoured it in under 24 hours. the sarcasm between the MFC and MMC was brilliant, the flirting was amazing and don't get me started on the sex because: DAMN!!! It had me blushing. Sam Evens has written an extraordinary dark romance that is something you need to experience for yourselves.
If you love female-revenge stories like Promising Young Women or The Mindfck Series this one is absolutely for you.
Our FMC is everything I want to be strong, unapologtically confident, and honestly just the right amount of unhinged. Love that for her 👑 When her cousin is failed by the justice system, she decides to take matters into her own hands and make the men who hurt her pay. And yes, the strategic dating of a certain hockey coach to gain access to them? Reckless, but ruthless. 👏
For everyone who speaks up despite the odds
The dedication is already devastating, but the author’s note revealing that Sam Evans was inspired by real events gives everything an added weight. The grief, fury and relentless pursuit of accountabillity it all lands with a sobering sense of reality that lingers well after the final page
If the justice system has ever let you down I hope you find an Alyssa in your corner 🥰
Having watched this author take this from the inception of the idea through the writing journey I was delighted to see the final product and oh boy does it deliver on every promise and so much more.
Feminine rage at its peak fury awaits you in this magnificent show of how one woman can rid the world of scumbags. Alyssa takes on the 5 hockey players who raped her cousin and walked away scot free while unexpectedly falling for the man who was only supposed to be her gateway to vengeance.
The witty banter, ingenious methods of dispatching, and the spice were next level. This is not your typical sports romance but it combines the theme of hockey and dark romance with such ease.
"Kill the Puckers" is not your standard sports romance book. It contains a powerful message for anyone who never received the justice they deserved. We follow along the main character, Alyssa, as she systematically removes the men that assaulted her cousin from this world. Alyssa ends up righting ths wrongs of a broken system, unexpectedly falls in love with her Mark and brings her own justice to the ones who deserve it.
An absolute fantastic read that I would recommend to anyone who loves bad ass women, great storytelling, and anyone who wants to see the bad guys get what they deserve.
This story follows Alyssa's plot for revenge after her cousins 5 r*ist get found not guilty for their part in Kates attack.
We follow Alyssa she picks her mark the head coach of the Hockey team, to get closer to the 5 men. We see her plan out her revenge using intel gathered by her daddy's best friend and put all her plans into action.
I enjoyed reading about justice being served, and the working out of all the plans. The spice was in point. The pacing was perfect. I loved that each time one of the men was eliminated we see the chains around Kate loosen. I loved the push and pull between Alyssa and mark, and how in the end Mark didn't care what Alyssa had done.
Thank you to Sam Evans and Netgalley for a copy of this arc to review.
Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans completely surprised me in the best way possible. The storyline was engaging from the start, and the writing style made it incredibly easy to dive right in. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC? Absolutely top tier. I miss Alyssa and Mark already.
I especially appreciated the unapologetically strong female lead; it’s always refreshing to see a character who owns her power without hesitation. Overall, this was a compelling dark hockey romance that delivered on tension, character dynamics, and atmosphere. I’ll definitely be keeping Sam Evans on my repeat-author list. Honestly, who can resist a well-done dark hockey romance? I need more!
I was hooked from the moment I started this book! You're thrown straight in with Alyssa (FMC) looking after her cousin who's fighting a rape trial against some hockey players. They're deemed not guilty, and Alyssa takes matters into her own hands.
This was a fast paced, spicy and intense read, that I loved every minute of. You're routing for Alyssa the whole time, and the MMC Mark is incredibly hot.
I devoured this book. I love a good dark romance book but add hockey plus revenge for a crime which goes unanswered for in real life, yes please. Sam Evans did an amazing job with writing a great story but paying attention to real life issues that happen more often than not. I absolutely loved this and highly recommend it.
Love, love, LOVED Kill The Puckers. It’s like Butcher & Blackbird and Lights Out had a baby and I was OBSESSED. I devoured this book so fast and honestly want to go back and read it again. It was messed up, sweet, and absolutely hilarious all at once. Incredible read, highly recommend! 🖤📖🔥
⚠️ Disclaimer Books are subjective. I said what I said. You can disagree, write a Reddit essay, light a sage bundle about it, or scream into a Stanley cup replica. None of that will change my opinion. Or my blood pressure. This is my lane. If you don’t like it, exit at the next ramp and don’t look back.
🏃💨 The Quick and Dirty Kill the Puckers is an unhinged, spite-powered, bad-bitch revenge story where a woman looks at a broken justice system, laughs once, and says, “Cool, I’ll handle it.” It is dark as hell while being funny in a “laughing while loading the gun” kind of way.
🕵️♀️ The Non-Spoilery Situation Report Alyssa Reed has always been a problem solver and a fan of the long con. When the justice system fails her best friend after a sexual assault, Alyssa does not write a strongly worded letter. She does not wait. She does not heal quietly. She decides to fix it.
Her problem isn’t motive or guts—it’s access. Hockey players are wrapped in money, PR spin, and the kind of institutional protection usually reserved for corrupt politicians (in the White House) and Marvel villains. So Alyssa stalks the team’s head coach, Mark Eriksson, for weeks, lands a date, and inserts herself directly into the ecosystem.
When hockey players start dying and Mark gets suspicious, Alyssa has to decide whether she’s trusting him because she wants to—or because the sex is great and she’s playing emotional roulette with a loaded gun.
🤔💭 The Review Alright, puddin’. Buckle the fuck up.
Kill the Puckers is what happens when feminine rage stops being theoretical and starts wearing combat boots with chipped nail polish. This book is feral. It’s loud. It’s sharp. It’s laughing too hard at the wrong moment and daring you to say something about it. This is not a book that asks, “Is this okay?” This is a book that says, “I already did it,” and blows a kiss as the sirens get closer.
Alyssa Reed is not here to be liked. She is here to be effective. And that—right there—is the secret sauce. She’s smart in a way that’s terrifying because it’s practical. No magical intuition. No plot armor stupidity. She watches. She plans. She stalks with purpose. She runs a long con like she’s been doodling revenge flowcharts in the margins of her notebook for years. Watching her work is like watching Harley Quinn with a spreadsheet: chaotic energy, razor focus, zero remorse.
And the thing is, Alyssa’s rage isn’t sloppy. It’s curated. It’s been simmering. It’s the kind of anger that shows up after the tears dry and the numbness wears off and what’s left is clarity. That clarity is dangerous. Evans understands this. She doesn’t dilute Alyssa’s anger to make her “palatable.” She doesn’t soften it with fake moral equivalency. She lets it be ugly and righteous and sharp-edged, because that’s what it is.
This book was born from real-world fury, and you can feel it humming under every page. That specific kind of anger that comes from watching men walk free while everyone tells women to trust the system, be patient, don’t ruin lives, think of the consequences. Kill the Puckers looks that rhetoric dead in the eye and cackles. Consequences? Babe. That’s the point.
Let’s talk about how this book handles sexual assault, because this is where grit matters. Evans does not exploit it. She does not sensationalize it. She does not turn trauma into a spectacle for reader consumption. The assault is treated with weight, respect, and seriousness—and then the story moves forward without forgetting why it exists. The survivor’s pain is not erased. It is honored. And Alyssa’s fury on her behalf feels earned, not performative.
This is women standing up for women without asking permission. No speeches. No hashtags. No performative wokeness. Just action. The kind of action that makes people uncomfortable because it refuses to be quiet. If you’re looking for a story where the survivor exists only to motivate the plot and then disappears, keep it moving. This book doesn’t do that shit.
The humor is unhinged. Dark. Razor-dry. It sneaks up behind you and whispers something fucked up in your ear and you laugh before you realize you probably shouldn’t have. It’s gallows humor with a glitter bomb taped to it. The jokes don’t pause for approval. They drop like anvils. It’s late-night stand-up comic energy where the punchline lands and the room goes silent because everyone knows it’s true.
Evans uses sarcasm like a shiv. There’s no apology tour. No explanatory footnotes. The book trusts you to keep up. It trusts you to sit with discomfort. It trusts you to laugh at the wrong moments and interrogate why. That confidence is intoxicating.
And oh, the hockey world. Jesus Christ. Evans doesn’t romanticize it for a second. She shows the insulation. The money. The PR spin. The way accountability evaporates when the right people close ranks. It’s not cartoonish. It’s worse than that—it’s familiar. The book doesn’t yell “THIS IS A PROBLEM.” It doesn’t need to. You’ve seen this movie before. On the news. In courtrooms. In documentaries everyone argued about for a week and then forgot.
Mark Eriksson is the wildcard. The emotional grenade Alyssa did not plan for. Their dynamic is messy and uncomfortable in a way that feels intentional. Attraction here is not safe. It’s not romanticized as healing. It’s volatile. It’s the kind of thing that makes you yell “DON’T DO IT” at the page like you’re watching someone ignore every red flag because the chemistry is doing parkour off the walls.
What I love is that the book never pretends desire is harmless. It complicates everything. It introduces vulnerability into a plan built on control. Alyssa doesn’t suddenly lose her brain because she wants something. She loses certainty. That’s scarier. That’s real.
The pacing is tight, like a coiled spring. Evans knows when to floor it and when to let tension sit there, grinning at you. Nothing feels wasted. Every scene either tightens the screws, reveals character, or sharpens stakes. It’s controlled chaos. Like a grin smeared with blood and lip gloss.
Stylistically, the writing doesn’t give a shit about sounding pretty. It’s sharp. Direct. Sometimes brutal. Sometimes laugh-out-loud funny in a way that makes you look around like, “Am I allowed to laugh at that?” The rhythm is jagged and alive. Short punches. Long riffs. Sudden turns. It feels like someone typing at 1:47 a.m. with a half-empty drink, a full playlist, and zero interest in restraint.
This book is gritty because it refuses to clean up its mess. It understands that anger isn’t neat. Justice isn’t neat. Loving someone while dismantling the structures that protect monsters is not neat. Polishing that into something tidy would be a lie. Evans doesn’t lie.
Kill the Puckers doesn’t ask you to agree with every choice. It asks you to understand where those choices come from. And then it lights a match, laughs too loud, and keeps walking.
🎯 Let’s Shoot the Shit Here’s the truth: Kill the Puckers is not a comfort read. It’s a confrontation. It’s for readers who are tired of watching women be asked to be graceful about injustice. It’s for anyone who’s ever read a headline and felt their teeth grind. It’s for people who want to see bad people face consequences without becoming President.
This is a bad bitch book. Glitter-stained rage. Lipstick on a blade. It’s angry. It’s funny. It’s unapologetic. It does not explain itself or soften its edges to make you feel safe. It looks at you and says, “I’m angry. You should be too.” It trusts you to keep up or get out of the way.
Read it late at night. Read it when you’re pissed. Read it when you need a reminder that women standing up for women is not radical—it’s necessary.
I had fun with this! I've been a hockey fan for almost 4 years, and am aware that this book was inspired by the Hockey Canada SA Scandal, so I really wanted to read it.
What I loved about the book/the main character is no one waits around for justice to be served, because let's face it, when someone is in position of power and money they will always get away with the crime, and the victim will always get let down. So I really enjoyed the revenge trope, especially because it was Alyssa's cousin/best friend who was assaulted, so it made the kills 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 personal.
I loved that when Mark found out what Alyssa was doing to his players he didn't even bat an eye, nor did he sell her out to the cops. His past did make him more understanding of why she did what she did. This man is a ride or die for his woman, a believer of victims, a new book boyfriend/husband to add to your list. (And the fact that this man is a freak? 👁️🫦👁️)
Alyssa's relationship with her Dad's former partner Vaughn was so heartwarming. He may not be her biological father, but he was a constant in her life and I just think it was so 🥺🤧 He also played a HUGE part in Alyssa's success in taking down those hockey players. I think she would've found a way regardless, but his resources were majorly helpful.
I would give this a 4.75/5 (I think I would've loved for the kills to be more gruesomely detailed 😈)
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Mind f*ck series vibes Dexter vibes 1st person POV FMC
Finding out in the Afterward that the premise of the crime was based on a real case really changed my feelings after finishing the novel. I went into this seeing a badass vigilante FMC in a fictional scenario and ended this understanding how the author wrote a story where justice was actually served when real life failed.
Without writing a dissertation, here are my thoughts. Mark is a phenomenal MMC. Dominant, caring, understanding and up-standing. He can do no wrong. I liked Alyssa’s growth throughout the story, her sense of justice and devotion to her family. She literally does what most of us want to do when justice isn’t serviced.
The loss of star for me is because I think she would have gotten caught. She was sloppy and winged a lot even though she had ample time to prepare. I couldn’t stop considering that the first murder could have ended the entire thing (trying to be spoiler free). Like, the first murder could have applied to all of them.. but then we wouldn’t have the book I suppose. I found it was necessary to not question it too much for the sake of the narrative which .. it’s fiction I get it.. considering this is pretty evenly split between romance/murder thriller, I needed more dedication to detail with the murders.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who loves high heat, romance, some gore, suspense and killing rapists 🔪💕
This book was really good and something completely different from what I expected. It’s listed as a dark romance, but that label mostly comes from the heavy themes woven throughout the story rather than the relationship itself.
Alyssa and Mark are the main characters, and I really enjoyed both of them especially Alyssa. After something tragic happens to someone close to her, she makes the decision to right a wrong, and that choice drives so much of the story. Watching her navigate everything that unfolds was powerful and engaging. She’s strong, determined, and layered in a way that made her easy to root for.
The vibe between Alyssa and Mark was one of my favorite parts. Their chemistry is definitely there, and the spice level delivers without overshadowing the emotional connection. Their dynamic felt intense but meaningful, which worked really well with the darker elements of the plot.
I also loved that Alyssa had a solid support system. Those relationships added depth to the story and balanced out some of the heavier moments.
If I had to mention two small things I would have liked, it would be a dual point of view and an epilogue. I would have loved to see inside Mark’s head a bit more, and an epilogue would have given that final sense of closure.
Overall, this was an emotional, intense read with strong chemistry and a compelling storyline. Definitely worth picking up if you enjoy darker themes mixed with romance.
Revenge is a dish best served cold… which is entirely fitting for the 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 🏒
This book has some serious topics so I suggest you check your triggers before reading… however; this book is for all the girls who stayed silent but dreamt of retribution 🖤
Alyssa Reed is one of the most fierce, loyal bad ass bitches I’ve ever read and she’s the kind of girl you want on your side when the justice system fails you…
After the justice system fails her best friend, who was assaulted by the 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 Alyssa decides to take matters into her own hands 🪛👁️💉🫀🔪
The deaths were brutal and the anxiety I felt while reading was palpable! At this point Sam is an auto buy/auto read author. The way she executed this book so perfectly. The atmosphere was DARK, the kills were satisfying and the SEX. SO MUCH SEX. 🥵 (Sam was in fact NOT lying when she warned us.) and the crazy part of it all.. admist this whole murder/revenge plot.. I was rooting for LOVE 😳
I highly recommend checking this one out! The chapter titles were SO FUN! The tracklist that went with the chapter titles.. EVEN BETTER. I audibly cackled at track no 7 😆 Ohhhhh and 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐢𝐳𝐳𝐚 🍕🍍(IYKYK) 😉
”How many hockey-douchebags can you kill before they realize they’re an endangered species?”
Did I read this in one sitting? Yes, yes I did, with the audacity of a man unsupervised.
I love dark romance, that’s my primary lane. Throw in hockey, and I’m levitating. Add a revenge plot, now I’m orbiting outer space.
Alyssa's cousin and best friend, Katie, is failed by the justice system after being gang-raped by five hockey bros. Alyssa, ever the problem solver, stalks Mark, their head coach, as part of a long con to get close to him and, in turn, gain access to Katie's rapists in order to take those pieces of shit out John Wick style.
I've said it before, shit talking is my love language, so I was howling with Alyssa and Mark. It was fast-paced and witty. Vengeance was delivered, and Alyssa slayed while she did it. She was such a strong FMC - she's a breath of fresh air compared to all the oh-so-weak and oh-so-delicate FMCs we are given most of the time. Alyssa put on her "bad ass" pants and showed up to become their problem.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinions are my own.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but it was so fun! I wasn’t sure if this would be like the Heated Rivalry or Pucked Up series, but this book really is such a fun mix of genres. We have a hockey romance, with a justifiably vengeful FMC absolutely taking retribution into her own hands. There were details that I, as a true crime and chemistry nerd, definitely appreciated, especially the name of the hockey arena , which were such fun touches. The FMC and MMC have amazing chemistry! This was a definitely not a slow burn, and I love that the romance starts nearly right away! The hockey aspect wasn’t’ distracting to the main storyline, but makes sense to the overall story. Honestly, it’s a great fun read, but it’s also a fantastic commentary on what is happening in the NHL right now and the ongoing support of rapists because they play hockey well. I appreciate authors who take stands on social and political concerns, so not only was this a super entertaining read, but it was also very socially relevant. Definitely check it out ASAP!
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans** is a dark hockey romance steeped in vengeance and moral complexity. Alyssa’s cousin—more like a sister—was assaulted, and all five players involved walked free. For now. Alyssa isn’t finished. Determined to exact justice, she embeds herself close to the team and chooses an unexpected mark: Mark, the team’s head coach.
Mark is sharp, charismatic, deeply caring, and—bonus—exceptional in bed. What Alyssa doesn’t anticipate is how effortlessly he becomes impossible not to love, especially since she’s never been in love before. Their chemistry is electric, their banter flawless, and their connection feels organic and earned. They fit together like puzzle pieces, bonded by difficult upbringings and less-than-ideal families—yet both remain genuinely good people at their core…well, aside from the killing.
This was my first read by Sam Evans, and I devoured it. The writing is seamless, the pacing relentless, and I couldn’t put it down. Huge thanks to Super Gravity Press LLC and NetGalley for the ARC. I’m still swooning over Mark—absolute book-boyfriend goals.
Sam Evans is as sassy as she writes her FMC in this book. Her content warning lets you know this right away -- and I was excited about the book from this point forward.
What makes this dark romance different from others is our villain is female righting wrongs, with a job that makes her vengeance even more wrong. Yes, a woman was victimized, but that is only fuel for the morally grey villain you root to win.
The MMC reads very hot. The only thing that could have made him hotter were tattoos. He wasn't a golden retriever, more of a complex macho guy who's very much a feminist. It's fun when you can't put characters into an assumed box.
What left me wanting was the ending. It ramps up to a cliff and then just stops steps from the edge. Kinda disappointing. Not sure if this was to get us fired up for a sequel?
4/5 for spicy. This dark book doesn't shy away from some kinks and dirty talk.
I was lucky enough to get a NetGalley ARC (advanced reader copy) in exchange for my honest opinion. And that is BUY THE BOOK!
Kill The Puckers by Sam Evans Dark Hockey Romance | ARC Review
I received an ARC(ebook) in exchange for an honest review.
If you love morally gray heroines, revenge driven plots and romance layered with danger and tension, this one absolutely delivers.
Alyssa Reed is a calculated, long game thinker. When the justice system fails her best friend after a brutal assault, she decides to take justice into her own hands by targeting the hockey players responsible. To get close enough, she begins a calculated plan that involves dating the team’s head coach, Mark Eriksson.
What I loved most about this story was the tension. The suspense builds steadily as players begin dropping and suspicion grows. The romance doesn’t feel rushed it’s complicated, messy, and layered with emotional conflict. Alyssa’s internal struggle between revenge and unexpected feelings adds real depth to the story.
This is dark, addictive, and emotionally intense. The morally gray elements are handled in a way that keeps you questioning motives until the end.
The way in which I am OBSESSED is not even a joke. What!?
I’m not entirely sure I can really explain how funny, compelling, absolutely heart breaking, and enthralling this story is.
Alyssa is on a vengeance journey to rival all others. Determined to make her best friend and cousin feel safe in this world again, she is willing to do ANYTHING to succeed, and at times I was literally whisper shouting at this book for her to “STOP NOW. TURN BACK.” Out of complete fear that she’d be caught or her plan would blow up in her face. The way Sam Evans had me on a hook just being dragged along praying for the best outcome for Alyssa was incredible. It’s not often you side with the killer in the story, but for her I was totally on side!
The mark named Mark is also surprisingly delightful. Their bickering borders on foreplay… or, well, is their foreplay? And his protective edge is unmatched, but what I loved about Mark’s character lay in his patient intelligence and the way his emotional intelligence was at the core of his character. He is warm, kind and compassionate, and served as a fantastic counter to Alyssa’s deeply obsessive planning.
Mark is deeply obsessive too, be very sure of this, but his obsession is her. In all of her glory 🩷
I wish I could be more analytical and eloquent in this review but honestly I just absolutely loved this and am obsessively fixed on telling you all to read it soon!
A huge thank you to Victory Editing & NetGalley for the ARC!
An unhinged, cathartic dark hockey romance where vengeance is the point and romance is the complication. What makes this book special is the female rage done right. Alyssa isn’t morally conflicted about her mission and the story never asks you to be either. The justice system failed, so she steps in with a long con, a body count, and zero remorse. The balance between revenge and romance is sharp, tense, and wildly satisfying.
