The Upper World

Angels, Rebellion, Found family, some of the things I loved most out of this dystopian romance. The found family being what I found the most enjoyable and one of my favorite parts of the story. Just the overall dynamic between them all, and the depth of the relationships. Who doesn’t love a “he falls first?” this man is so down bad for her.
I loved the reveals, and the unique worldbuilding, and I cant wait to see what happens next!

Upper World had me HOOKED from the onset. The plot momentum of the underground, the oppressive leadership, the found family dynamics- it all had me very intrigued from the get go and I couldn’t put it down!
The plot lost its way for me in the middle. There were so many time hops in such a short period that it got a bit muddled where we were going.
We also receive so much history and backstory from secondary characters- it helps to round out the story but it lost the momentum that made the first part of the book so good.
By the end the book found its stride again- there were so many big reveals my jaw was on the floor!
Pros- LOVED the found family dynamics and the true friendship between Mena & Emi.
Cons- the love story felt confusing at times.

“She was reminiscent of dreams he could not make sense of, and he wondered if that was why, despite being at this for weeks, his chest seemed to thud erratically whenever he found himself near her.”
I thought the premise of this book was really cool. The dystopian setting, military training, missions, and bloodthirsty leadership immediately hooked me in. Found family is also a trope I always love, and the friendship between Mena and Emi was so sweet to watch develop throughout the story.
The romance side of things left me wanting a little more though. There were big moments of buildup that sometimes felt like they didn’t fully pay off. It definitely reads more like a slow burn when it comes to feelings. There’s a little spice sprinkled in, but the actual admitting of those feelings takes a while and still leaves you wanting more.
At times the story felt like it jumped around a bit, almost like I was missing pieces or important context that would have helped some moments land better. The beginning has a huge buildup, but the middle felt a little slower and like parts of the plot were missing.
Then the ending hits and suddenly everything starts coming together. There are so many big reveals in the back half of the book that had me sitting there wondering what in the world just happened and when I can get my hands on the next one. Honestly, I did not see most of those twists coming.
That said, the world building and atmosphere were really well done, and it was easy to picture everything going on. The book also ends on a cliffhanger, so I think a lot will probably be expanded on in the next installment. Overall, I’m really excited to see where the story goes next!

Dystopian books are so back baby! Mixed with a healthy dose of romantasy, I couldn’t put this book down.
The Upper World is a dual POV story told by FMC Mena, a strong, fearless leader who would do anything for her found family, and MMC Azrael, the angel of Death and part of a secret rebellion.
Mena was raised to be a ruthless weapon, and Azrael was raised in a world where love is forbidden.
These two souls must tear down the loveless system that tore them apart, all while embarking on a journey of self discovery, uncovering deadly secrets and trying to save their worlds.
Erica’s writing made this book incredibly fun and easy to follow, with immersive world building. All characters stood out and I really appreciated the depth given to each of their stories, it really made them feel like family. The banter was entertaining and funny, and the YEARNING? It’s no secret that I am a huuuuge sucker for an MMC who yearns (sometimes I love it more than spicy scenes) and boy does Azrael deliver! He would burn the worlds for Mena.
The Upper World is book 1 in a 3 book series, so I am very very excited for book 2, especially after that plot twist cliffhanger!
Overall this was a fantastic read, especially as a debut! My only reason for a 4 star rating is at the start of the story there a couple time jumps, and personally I am not a big fan of time jumps. I would have loved a little more story in between those jumps, HOWEVER the rest of the story more than made up for that.

I am such a sucker for this kind of dystopian fantasy - ANGELS, FOUND FAMILY, REBELLION and ROMANCE? What more can I ask for?!
This novel's incredibly enjoyable and I was hooked right at the start with its immersive world building and a plot that's interesting and carrying a lot of depth with its military political intrigue.
All of the characters were also easy to love and understand, and the whole friendship dynamic with their funny exchanges and encounters just created a vibe that felt realistic and absolutely adorable. The romance between the mains was a slow burn with a lot of yearning and passion, and it was gradually evolving which I adored but also felt lacking of in some way - basically, that's just me saying I need more of it. 🤭
And although there were some confusing bits in the middle, it still picked up and I was screaming at the end of the story. Now, I am left wanting.. no, craving to know what was that thing that this certain individual did (iykyk!). Aaaaaahh, I'm sooo excited to see how this world will develop in the upcoming books. And, if you love a military-style dystopian fantasy, give this a go! Recommended! ✨️

I had the chance to ARC read The Upper world, the first book in a 3 book dystopian romantasy series. Its release date is March 26th and let me just say, this book does not disappoint.
The Upper World follows the discovered angel, Mena, and her team of friends who are trapped underground on the world of Erth by the cursed Bishop and forced to be his killers. At least, until they meet Azrael, the angel of Death who informs them of the unknown Upper World, working with Mena’s team to break them out and take down the Bishop. All Mena wants is revenge, and the two angels growing feelings conflict with the no love laws of the Upper World… but their destinies continue to intertwine. And the fate of Erth and all the angels rests on their shoulders.

“The moment I found you, even from afar, I had to know you. You called to me . . . like a guiding star. Then, when I first met you on that beach, you sparked something. I’d been unable to dream of my future until you looked at me, and then every dream I had was of my future, and you were in them all.”
Wow, this book completely made me forget I that was reading. I’ve been on hooked on it all DAY! If you want a story that you won’t be able to put down despite your better judgment, then The Upper World is the book for you! I’m so glad that books 2 and 3 are already written, because I don’t know how long I can wait for them after that ending! I hope I get to arc read the next books to make that wait even shorter.
I love that this is a dystopian romantasy, because while I love dystopian stories, I am a BIG romantasy girl. I mean, who doesn’t love romance? 🤭. And even though the romance that we do get is on the lighter side, it is there in sprinkles. And I mean, the story is still so good without there being romance in the first place? Like, hello?! Howevee, I will say that I would rate the spice level around a 1.5. There were a few scenes that were mostly just kissing and touching.
I will also say that I was a bit confused at certain times while reading, but I was mostly able to piece together was going on after rereading the lines a few times! I’m very excited to see where the story goes from here!

ARC review ✨ I went into The Upper World wanting to dip my toe into the genre and I came out emotionally attached to a group of traumatised angels and that's it: I've signed the contract and joined the romantasy girlie club thanks to Erica Jean 🎟️👋🏻
This has everything: dystopian chaos, rebellion, missions, a sprinkle of military-style training, forbidden love + fates bonds, and ✨ found family ✨ (my ride or die trope across any genre). I can't fault the world building, as someone new to fantasy / romantasy, I never felt lost, just fully immersed and the magic had me hooked 🔮 constantly wanting to learn more.
The group dynamic was everything, every character felt real, distinct personalities, strengths, flaws and I would like to formally apply to join their team immediately. Mena, I loved her 🖤 strong but soft, she's determined, sassy, loyal and her people pleasing tendencies hit close to home, I’d follow her into battle 🗡️ And Azrael, a cinnamon roll in an angel of death costume, a man who could destroy you but instead chooses emotional support. The romance was perfectly balanced, it was a strangers to lovers story, but it never takes over the plot. It just weaves itself in like it belongs there, which made every moment hit harder 💕 Special mention to Lou, quietly protective, lowkey mothering everyone from a distance, I trust her with my life.
The whole story carries these themes of healing, guilt, regret, and trying to reclaim who you are after everything’s been taken from you ❤️🩹 And I was not emotionally prepared for that ending, I will be begging for books 2 + 3 like my life depends on it. I wasn’t ready for it to end and I will be getting a physical copy for my trophy shelf, five stars ✨

This book was a little out of my comfort zone. I love romantasy, but definitely more the fantasy strong and romance elements. Sci-Fi and dystopian are genres I have engaged with occasionally.
Initially the authors creation of a dystopian world had me hooked and I was taken by surprise with how much I enjoyed this book! The characters were engaging and the found family trope was evident from the beginning and had me gripped, wanting to discover how Mena and her team saved themselves and gained the freedom from the tyrant Bishop. Add in the hot Angel of Death, Azrael, and this book had everything for me.
Unfortunately, about halfway through, after they’d escaped from the Underground I started to struggle. There was so much world building I was excited to see where it went, but this was entirely from secondary characters in a way that made it really hard to understand the world that was being depicted and left me a little lost.
Magic was portrayed throughout the book and I loved watching how it developed, especially as the characters honed their skills as time went by. However, it seemed that some complex magic principals had been created by the author, these fell a bit short for me. Once again, I felt like everything was too complicated and I struggled to create an image in my mind of the story.
After struggling through, the last 20% was once again really good! It reached the crux of the story and I was gripped, there were so many plot twists I didn’t expect and it solidified my love for the characters.
Overall, it was a good book and I expect some of those who love dystopian and world building a little more than me will really enjoy it!

One question: when is the next book because I NEED IT NOW!! That ending, what did he do!! Honestly, I knew he was suspicious 🤨😅

I was totally hooked by this book from that very first chapter. I found the world super interesting, and the magic really unique and I was just constantly curious about Mena’s magic, I absolutely loved learning about her magic, and I’m so excited to see her grow with it.
I adored our main characters. I was obsessed with the chemistry, and the tension between Mena and Azrael was just ahhh, the slow burn was absolutely killing me, I do love a good slow burn though and this was done so so well.
I am absolutely obsessed with the found family theme in this book. I love our side characters, they each were written so well, each character had such a personality, I just loved reading about any of them. And of course, can’t forgot the spirits, I can just imagine them being the absolute cutest.
The start of this book was so so strong, and the pacing was amazing. Towards the middle though, it did feel like the pacing slowed a bit, and it felt like I was kind of missing information at times, I’ve had a busy week so that may have just been me missing things 😅, it definitely picked up at the end, I was literally on the edge of my seat with that ending. I am definitely also super excited to explore Mena’s home world in the second book, whenever they mention it I get more and more excited, it just sounds so cool, and I’m just so curious to see like the dynamic of the characters in that world.

This is one of those stories that you sink into... there’s so much happening, so many layers, and twists that keep unfolding in ways you don’t expect. It’s not a quick, mindless read. It’s one you actually experience, and honestly, that made it even better.
Mena was hands down one of my favorite parts of this book. She’s strong and resilient, but not in a way that feels forced or one dimensional. She carries so much, constantly putting others before herself, and you really feel that throughout the story. I loved watching her grow, struggle at times, and still keep going no matter what.
And Azrael?? Their bond is EVERYTHING. The connection between them felt so natural but also intense in the best way. It wasn’t rushed, it wasn’t overpowering; it just fit. Every interaction between them had me sucked in.
But I have to talk about Lou too because I absolutely loved her. The protective, motherly role she played for Mena just hit so hard. She wasn’t loud about it, but you could feel how deeply she cared in every moment. And that scene in the cave?? Yeah… I was not okay. That one had me crying.
The world building was immersive without being overwhelming, and I never felt lost, just completely pulled into this chaotic, emotional, and beautifully layered world. The found family vibes, the tension, and everything these characters go through, it just hits in a way I cannot put into words.
And that ending?? I’m gonna need the next book immediately. This one isn’t just a read, it’s a whole experience and I am here for it!

The Upper World by is a story of a stolen angel, Death who finds her, and the fate woven across worlds. The story starts with our FMC Mena and her team captive in the Underworld. I loved the oppression in this setting, and how Mena and the other ‘soldiers’ were silenced and controlled. I loved the mind travel and the hope of escape that Azrael, the MMC gives!
This was my first novel I’ve read centred around angels and I’m so here for this characterisation! I really loved the concept of the angels being able to gift and share their inherent powers, and the mind communication trope is a big yes for me!

But I truly love the time jumps because it gives you a full kindling love filled with yearning while still carrying the importance of the actual plot. To me, that's the most important thing - while I do love romance (hello, I'm a heavy romantasy/contemporary romance girly), I want A FREAKING PLOT and we get that here in spades!!!

It’s a magical, dystopian backdrop with human, fae, angels, witches, and shapeshifters. There’s underground operatives, military training, and missions with real stakes. There’s a spread of found family with ride-or-die friendships that I immediately invested in.
But…the plot took a few detours without a map. I got hit with a quick-fire backstory and a lot of information all at once—it started to feel a bit overwhelming. I was running to keep up wondering if I missed something, when the pieces didn’t seem to quite fit.
I enjoyed the slow burn and the tension. The “forbidden love” aspect of the relationship will ALWAYS have me sat and it did NOT disappoint.

I was lucky to receive the opportunity to be an ARC reader for book one of World Of The Valley.
This was such a beautiful book and I adored it! You really got swept in straight away at the beginning and it kept you hooked.
I loved the found family dynamic, each character was beautifully written with their own characteristics, quirks and flaws, it felt authentic and natural.
The world building was intriguing and I loved the whole idea of how our reliance on technology can have a nefarious impact as well as an advancement.
Our FMC Mena was such a loveable character. I felt I resonated with her a lot throughout the book, with her strong capable mind set but people pleasing quality which she did struggle with at times. I loved her different relationship dynamics with each of her friends as well.
Azrael I loved because he was such a sweetheart! It was refreshing to read about a MMC who wasn’t all harsh and brash, although he could pick his moments when he needed to! And I loved how he was just all for Mena throughout the book.
Overall I loved this book and the ending was so jaw dropping that I’m dying to read the next one!

I’ll be honest — I found it a little harder to get into at the start, just with everything being set up, but once it gets going there’s a lot to sink into.
The concept is really interesting — the split between the Underground and the Upper World, angels, control, and the idea of being created for a purpose you don’t agree with. There’s definitely a darker edge running through it.

How do I start this… absolutely loved it!
The Upper World is everything you need from a dystopian romantasy.
The characters are brilliant, Mena the FMC is so creatively written, I felt attachment straight away. The journey she had to endure is heroic in itself. Along with her caring, strong and lovable personality which shone throughout.
The MMC Azrael is probably one of my favourites of all time! Someone powerful but doesn't show that side unless pushed. I have a soft spot for Azrael for his own journey through this world of forbidden love which pulls on your heartstrings. I couldn't stop smiling when reading from how courageous he is!
Reading page after page, I didn't think the next chapter could bring anything else. I was so wrong, the unravelling of the story is handled tremendously. The rhythm of the journey flows effortlessly. From the characters to the world building it was never stale. I was turning pages so fast, due to the love and passion this book has been crafted with.
Honestly it has been a pleasure to read The Upper World and I am so ready for the next release.
This book deserves every bit of hype there is and I implore you to pick it up!

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this book! I couldn’t put it down. I quickly fell in love with Mena, the FMC, and Azrael, the MMC.
Mena is a stolen angel who ends up in a place that feels more like a prison than a sanctuary. There, she’s forced to do whatever the leader, Bishop, demands while he keeps everyone under constant surveillance. Mena and the others possess powerful abilities, but their memories have been stolen, leaving them with no recollection of who they once were.
Azrael is sent on a mission to rescue Mena, but things quickly become complicated when he begins to fall for her. Determined to protect her at all costs, he finds himself risking everything.
The story follows Mena, Azrael, and their friends as they rise up in rebellion to free others like themselves and ultimately save Erth.
Overall, this was a fantastic read. I loved the magic each character possesses, and I’m always feral for a story with fated mates. This one also includes soul ties, which I absolutely adored!

easiest three star rating i've ever given in my life and i feel so sad about it.
this book truly has the potential. it starts off super strong and with a promising development but around 40%, the whole thing gets stuck. it felt like a chore to pick it up at the end because of how sloooooow everything was going, at one point i just wanted a battle, some tension, a fight bigger than a verbal one, anything. instead, we got the famous "yearning" that doesn't feel like it at all. i feel the editors should've cut down the infodumping scenes a little and not make it so much "she said this, he said that" instead of showing all the development. the ending at least kept me intrigued and now i really wanna know how the story continues and if the author will improve her writing.
the characters are all amazing tho, 10/10 no notes. and i need more chapters from the male POV, just saying. but it was a good book, at least it was entertaining!

The forbidden love part in this story is my favorite, don’t ask why, we all seem to love forbidden things, right? Azrael has such a golden retriever energy that will totally melt your heart 💜
The magic system in this book is really unique. Can’t wait to find out what other hidden powers our FMC, Mena, has. She is fearless and compassionate, even after all that she’s been through.
The dynamic between her and her found family is really touching. Speaking of family, I’m gonna need book 2 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 asap because I need to know what the hell is going on with Dion???
If you love dystopian worlds, forbidden love and hope in dark places this book is for you!

ARC REVIEW ✨
I loved the way this book started, I was hooked onto the Underground. It has a very strong starting point, loved getting to know the personalities of the entire friendship group.
Once we left the underground I found myself still committed to the story. I was all over the place with trying to figure out who is good and who is bad, I had trust issues with all the characters. Some I was right and some I was wrong in the end.
I found the very ending to be quite messy. I enjoyed this story all the way up until the grand finale, then it completely lost me. I really struggled to pull images into my head on what the last section was supposed to look like, and I’m generally good at drawing up images in my mind. I started getting very confused very quickly. It felt like it could have been extended a little long as it felt quick and jumpy.
Overall I still think it’s an awesome story and enjoyed the originality! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

The upper world is a dystopian fantasy that focuses heavily on Mena and her friends, who are a group of angels, that have had to maneuver through very devastating circumstances.
The found family trope was one of my favorite parts of this book. Each of the characters have their own struggles and backstories, but they some how come together to support and love each other despite their unfavorable situations.
While there is a romance in the book, it does take more of a backseat to the rest of the storyline. There is some fun banter and sweet instances sprinkled throughout the book. The MMC have some really swoon worthy moments.
This book had many layers and a cliffhanger that will catch you by surprise!
If you’re a dystopian reader this book is for you!

This is my honest review of The Upper World: Book One
This book seemed very promising from the tropes and blurb, but I feel like it fell short for me in that it did not hold my attention the whole time.
I loved the found family dynamics and the magical/supernatural beings. The story however felt rushed at one point with an information overload and not much time to process. It did come together in the end, but I felt a bit lost for a while.
The writing and the attention to detail is really good. Who doesn’t love a slow burn with forbidden love! This was my personal experience reading this. Perhaps you’ll find it better suited for you than I did.
I look forward to seeing how book 2 continues the story!

Slow burn, secrets, found family feels!
Okay so this one was a journey. The plot kept me engaged but there was a lot going on.The world-building is immersive, the scenes are descriptive enough that you’re basically there.
Fair warning: this is a slow burn through and through.
The found family dynamic absolutely carried this story for me. Emi is so fun and sweet. Mena is a strong FMC who clearly hasn’t even scratched the surface of what she’s truly capable of! Cora, the betrayal was real. Leo broke my heart a little, trauma really did a number on him. Dion, communicate better next time, please. And Azrael… tortured angel with an edge and also a lover boy.
The series has so much potential! Interested to see how book 2 plays out!

I have a love/not love relationship with this book. I loved the found family dynamics. I loved a lot of the characters. I didn’t really love the plot.
The plot lost me somewhere along the way. It dragged at times, felt jumbled at others, and other times things felt so fast that I lost my way. Overall, it was solid, but I didn’t love it nearly as much as I hoped I would.
I thought about writing a super long review detailing what I didn’t love it, but I ultimately decided to keep it short and sweet because I have a feeling this book will grow on me over time and that my review will change.

Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity! I was really intrigued by the premise and excited to start this.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the best fit for me. I struggled to connect with the characters, and much of the interpersonal drama felt somewhat juvenile while being treated with a level of emotional weight that didn’t fully land for me. Because of that disconnect, I also found myself feeling a bit indifferent toward some of the higher-stakes plot points.
The writing also left me feeling a bit confused at times, which made it difficult to stay fully immersed.
While the writing wasn’t for me, other readers may have a different experience.

A debut romantasy centered arounds gods, angels & revenge.
This was such an easy & fun read! The magic system itself and the distribution of powers is so unique. I also love a forbidden love moment, and you do get that in this story. I feel like the forbidden love aspect takes a different approach in this story as reluctant allies to lovers. Most of the forbidden romance I have read, is enemies to lovers, so this was a fun & different twist to it! Azrael yeaaaarns for Mena, even when she is unaware and it's so wholesome.
