Fated to love but raised to be heartless – A story of two souls who must uproot the loveless systems that tore them apart.
In the dystopian future of Erth, Mena, a powerful being, is trapped in the Underground where she and hundreds like her are forced by their self-proclaimed creator, Bishop, to commit unforgivable sins.
Hazy memories of Mena’s past show glimpses of another life beyond the cold walls that conceal them. The only solace in her dream of escape is her team, and the bond they share in knowing this is not what they were meant to be.
Under orders from another world, Azrael, the Angel of Death, locates Mena and her team. He soon discovers she’s far more than the stolen angel he was led to believe and yearns to keep her safe… but the laws of the Upper World make his growing feelings for her a danger of their own. Whilst all Mena wishes for is revenge, Azrael learns that Bishop’s cursed soul threatens the fate of Erth and the angels of the Upper World, and to give them a fighting chance, Mena has to heal her enemy, not kill him.
Mena and Azrael’s destinies become deeply entwined as they traverse saving two worlds that have long oppressed them, to create a home where their people can be free.
But what if their pasts have destroyed too much to repair?

Some themes that always appeal to me include: a dystopian setting, angels and divine realms, forbidden love. So while I truly appreciate the idea of this story, there are also some elements that kept me from feeling immersed and engaged.
Mena is a slave to her Underground “creator” Bishop, who frequently sends her off on missions to kill and destroy people and towns. She and her team are rescued by Azrael, an Angel from the Upper World, who reveals that she is not only an angel as well, but necessary to save both worlds.
I’m not sure that I would say this is a true dystopian story, more that oppression is a key theme for both worlds, with Mena caught in the middle. I like the idea that angels have a hand in both realms, and that they have government problems of their own with a power hungry leader. It gives me Greek mythology vibes mixed with urban fantasy.
My biggest struggle is that I never fully connected with the characters or the issues at play. The page time spent on Mena under Bishop’s rule is brief, and then the timeline jumps a few years. Bishop’s cruelty is reported and Mena’s torture under him is described, but neither are grounded in enough detail to help me feel emotionally invested.
The middle part of the story has Mena in a holding pattern, where the action drops off and more time is spent on character development. While I would usually enjoy this, there is a lot of time spent experiencing the characters’ thoughts and again not necessarily in detailed moments. Personally, this gave me the feeling of a far off spectator rather than being fully immersed. I ended up skimming from half to 3/4 into the story, so I’m bumping up my rating a bit to reflect the fact that I didn’t get a complete picture.
Overall I think that the themes are appealing, but the pacing and the way that this story is written kept me feeling being fully engaged. I would definitely encourage readers who enjoy paranormal and urban fantasy to give this a try if the premise sounds interesting.

Currently living my best dystopian life. I also love this dedication 🫶🏼
“To the dreamers. This is for those learning to be unafraid and unashamed to reach within, find your power and seize it.”
Upper World had me HOOKED from the onset. The plot momentum of the underground, the oppressive leadership, the found family dynamics- it all had me very intrigued from the get go and I couldn’t put it down!
The plot lost its way for me in the middle. There were so many time hops in such a short period that it got a bit muddled where we were going. We also receive so much history and backstory from secondary characters- it helps to round out the story but it lost the momentum that made the first part of the book so good.
By the end the book found its stride again- there were so many big reveals my jaw was on the floor!
Pros- LOVED the found family dynamics and the true friendship between Mena & Emi. Cons- the love story felt confusing at times.
“Valley above, you are everything,” he said, grabbing her neck and pulling her down to him, to an all-embracing kiss she thought she might not ever get again. To a kiss she wished might never end.
Angels, Rebellion, Found family, some of the things I loved most out of this dystopian romance. The found family being what I found the most enjoyable and one of my favorite parts of the story. Just the overall dynamic between them all, and the depth of the relationships. Who doesn’t love a “he falls first?” this man is so down bad for her.
I loved the reveals, and the unique worldbuilding, and I cant wait to see what happens next!
Thank you to Erica Jean for providing an advance copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Rating: 4/5
“She was reminiscent of dreams he could not make sense of, and he wondered if that was why, despite being at this for weeks, his chest seemed to thud erratically whenever he found himself near her.”
I thought the premise of this book was really cool. The dystopian setting, military training, missions, and bloodthirsty leadership immediately hooked me in. Found family is also a trope I always love, and the friendship between Mena and Emi was so sweet to watch develop throughout the story.
The romance side of things left me wanting a little more though. There were big moments of buildup that sometimes felt like they didn’t fully pay off. It definitely reads more like a slow burn when it comes to feelings. There’s a little spice sprinkled in, but the actual admitting of those feelings takes a while and still leaves you wanting more.
At times the story felt like it jumped around a bit, almost like I was missing pieces or important context that would have helped some moments land better. The beginning has a huge buildup, but the middle felt a little slower and like parts of the plot were missing.
Then the ending hits and suddenly everything starts coming together. There are so many big reveals in the back half of the book that had me sitting there wondering what in the world just happened and when I can get my hands on the next one. Honestly, I did not see most of those twists coming.
That said, the world building and atmosphere were really well done, and it was easy to picture everything going on. The book also ends on a cliffhanger, so I think a lot will probably be expanded on in the next installment. Overall, I’m really excited to see where the story goes next!
First of all, thank you to Erica Jean for the opportunity to read this as an ARC!
Dystopian books are so back baby! Mixed with a healthy dose of romantasy, I couldn’t put this book down.
The Upper World is a dual POV story told by FMC Mena, a strong, fearless leader who would do anything for her found family, and MMC Azrael, the angel of Death and part of a secret rebellion. Mena was raised to be a ruthless weapon, and Azrael was raised in a world where love is forbidden. These two souls must tear down the loveless system that tore them apart, all while embarking on a journey of self discovery, uncovering deadly secrets and trying to save their worlds.
Erica’s writing made this book incredibly fun and easy to follow, with immersive world building. All characters stood out and I really appreciated the depth given to each of their stories, it really made them feel like family. The banter was entertaining and funny, and the YEARNING? It’s no secret that I am a huuuuge sucker for an MMC who yearns (sometimes I love it more than spicy scenes) and boy does Azrael deliver! He would burn the worlds for Mena.
The Upper World is book 1 in a 3 book series, so I am very very excited for book 2, especially after that plot twist cliffhanger!
Overall this was a fantastic read, especially as a debut! My only reason for a 4 star rating is at the start of the story there a couple time jumps, and personally I am not a big fan of time jumps. I would have loved a little more story in between those jumps, HOWEVER the rest of the story more than made up for that.
The Upper World releases 26th March 2026 and is now available for pre-order 💜

Tropes: Slow Burn - He Falls First - Intense Yearning - “You Cannot Have Her” - Dystopian - Fated Mates - Found Family - Unique Reincarnation - Forbidden Love
I am such a sucker for this kind of dystopian fantasy - ANGELS, FOUND FAMILY, REBELLION and ROMANCE? What more can I ask for?!
This novel's incredibly enjoyable and I was hooked right at the start with its immersive world building and a plot that's interesting and carrying a lot of depth with its military political intrigue.
All of the characters were also easy to love and understand, and the whole friendship dynamic with their funny exchanges and encounters just created a vibe that felt realistic and absolutely adorable. The romance between the mains was a slow burn with a lot of yearning and passion, and it was gradually evolving which I adored but also felt lacking of in some way - basically, that's just me saying I need more of it. 🤭
And although there were some confusing bits in the middle, it still picked up and I was screaming at the end of the story. Now, I am left wanting.. no, craving to know what was that thing that this certain individual did (iykyk!). Aaaaaahh, I'm sooo excited to see how this world will develop in the upcoming books. And, if you love a military-style dystopian fantasy, give this a go! Recommended! ✨️
It’s a magical, dystopian backdrop with human, fae, angels, witches, and shapeshifters. There’s underground operatives, military training, and missions with real stakes. There’s a spread of found family with ride-or-die friendships that I immediately invested in.
But…the plot took a few detours without a map. I got hit with a quick-fire backstory and a lot of information all at once—it started to feel a bit overwhelming. I was running to keep up wondering if I missed something, when the pieces didn’t seem to quite fit.
I enjoyed the slow burn and the tension. The “forbidden love” aspect of the relationship will ALWAYS have me sat and it did NOT disappoint.
HOWEVER. The ending said “let’s f*ck 💩 up.” Because suddenly the reveals created absolute chaos. It’s the kind of chaotic ending that pulls it all back together. The found family carries, the premise is definitely intriguing, with enough curiosity to see where book two goes.
*Thank you to Erica Jean for this arc opportunity.
I had the chance to ARC read The Upper world, the first book in a 3 book dystopian romantasy series. Its release date is March 26th and let me just say, this book does not disappoint.
The Upper World follows the discovered angel, Mena, and her team of friends who are trapped underground on the world of Erth by the cursed Bishop and forced to be his killers. At least, until they meet Azrael, the angel of Death who informs them of the unknown Upper World, working with Mena’s team to break them out and take down the Bishop. All Mena wants is revenge, and the two angels growing feelings conflict with the no love laws of the Upper World… but their destinies continue to intertwine. And the fate of Erth and all the angels rests on their shoulders.

4.5 ⭐️!
“The moment I found you, even from afar, I had to know you. You called to me . . . like a guiding star. Then, when I first met you on that beach, you sparked something. I’d been unable to dream of my future until you looked at me, and then every dream I had was of my future, and you were in them all.”
Wow, this book completely made me forget I that was reading. I’ve been on hooked on it all DAY! If you want a story that you won’t be able to put down despite your better judgment, then The Upper World is the book for you! I’m so glad that books 2 and 3 are already written, because I don’t know how long I can wait for them after that ending! I hope I get to arc read the next books to make that wait even shorter.
I love that this is a dystopian romantasy, because while I love dystopian stories, I am a BIG romantasy girl. I mean, who doesn’t love romance? 🤭. And even though the romance that we do get is on the lighter side, it is there in sprinkles. And I mean, the story is still so good without there being romance in the first place? Like, hello?! Howevee, I will say that I would rate the spice level around a 1.5. There were a few scenes that were mostly just kissing and touching.
I will also say that I was a bit confused at certain times while reading, but I was mostly able to piece together was going on after rereading the lines a few times! I’m very excited to see where the story goes from here!
“Regardless of what we are yet to face, you will always be the light that guides me to envision a brighter future. Let us build a better world, one where this smile of yours is as common as the sun rising each day and the stars whispering each night.”
“I’d been unable to dream of my future until you looked at me, and then every dream I had was of my future, and you were in them all.”
I will be very honest here and admit that I had trouble rating this book. I eventually settled on
3 ⭐️ 1 🌶️ or maybe even 🫑? 2 🫐 2 🗡️
For those not familiar with my extra rating scales, 🫐 is the yearning (or blue balls) rating, the dagger represents how stabby, angry or bloodthirsty the main character is. All scales are out of a maximum of 5 points each. (There is a tldr of the review at the end)
Highs: The overall plot and premise behind this book are great. I really liked the ideas behind the writing. Usually angels are not my jam but in this case they went straight onto the toast. The characters were likeable and easy to root for. I wanted them to succeed. Also, it was set in Australia, which automatically made it better.
Mids: The pacing felt off. The book starts off moderately paced, then settles into a slow paced “slice of life” montage that dragged for me. Somewhere around 60-70% of the book (or at least it felt like that much) is set at this pedestrian amble speed and the author uses this to introduce the lore through character conversations. It gets going again in the last 20% of the book and the ending was satisfying.
Lows: Some of the imagery and grammar could be improved. There were several times when I thought to myself “please put away the thesaurus, that word does not mean what you think it means”. Sometimes it felt like the author lost track of the position a character was in so they hugged knees that were spread apart or crawled while standing up. The occasional misuse of words and confusing kinaesthetic imagery took me out of the story and this was honestly what made this book so difficult to rate for me.
TLDR: A kickarse angel teams up with Death to bring justice to both Erth and the Upper World. Come for the unique twist on angels, stay for the found family and bi and non-binary representation. I hope we get a fluffy sidekick, or at least some sort of sprite or fairy.
A little late, but I had the pleasure of reading ᴛʜᴇ ᴜᴘᴘᴇʀ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ by Erica Jean . This dystopian romantasy ⚔️❤️ takes place in a world that is merciless and where love is forbidden to for our FMC and MMC, Meana and Azrael. This book is ACTION-PACKED, full of world building 🌎 and the first in a trilogy. It is available NOW!
Mena is a hardened and gifted warrior living in The Underground with no memories of her life before she was four. With her found family of companions, they have been tortured and forced to inflict torture by the hands of their kidnapper, Bishop. Mena knows there's more to her life than this. She refuses to be a mindless killing weapon, when her heart says it was meant for love and care. She needs to find her way out, needs to help her family, and everyone else enslaved, like her, get out of Bishop's grasp. Then, by the Fates and Valley, comes Azarel.
Azrael, the Angel of Death, has guarded Erth by the will of Easthar. Born from the love that is now forbidden, Azrael has seen cruelty unimaginable due to the law. When he meets Mena for the first time, he vows to protect her and her companions in order to save the many angels that have been abducted by Bishop. But he is falling for her and falling hard. This is not allowed. This is forbidden. This could have him killed by Buros, like his parents. But how could he not when she looks at him with those green eyes?
Come. Join the Rebellion! Free the Angels!

ARC review ✨ I went into The Upper World wanting to dip my toe into the genre and I came out emotionally attached to a group of traumatised angels and that's it: I've signed the contract and joined the romantasy girlie club thanks to Erica Jean 🎟️👋🏻
This has everything: dystopian chaos, rebellion, missions, a sprinkle of military-style training, forbidden love + fates bonds, and ✨ found family ✨ (my ride or die trope across any genre). I can't fault the world building, as someone new to fantasy / romantasy, I never felt lost, just fully immersed and the magic had me hooked 🔮 constantly wanting to learn more.
The group dynamic was everything, every character felt real, distinct personalities, strengths, flaws and I would like to formally apply to join their team immediately. Mena, I loved her 🖤 strong but soft, she's determined, sassy, loyal and her people pleasing tendencies hit close to home, I’d follow her into battle 🗡️ And Azrael, a cinnamon roll in an angel of death costume, a man who could destroy you but instead chooses emotional support. The romance was perfectly balanced, it was a strangers to lovers story, but it never takes over the plot. It just weaves itself in like it belongs there, which made every moment hit harder 💕 Special mention to Lou, quietly protective, lowkey mothering everyone from a distance, I trust her with my life.
The whole story carries these themes of healing, guilt, regret, and trying to reclaim who you are after everything’s been taken from you ❤️🩹 And I was not emotionally prepared for that ending, I will be begging for books 2 + 3 like my life depends on it. I wasn’t ready for it to end and I will be getting a physical copy for my trophy shelf, five stars ✨
Publication day: march 26 ✨ Thank you to Erica Jean + Tia for the free ARC, my opinions are my own.
This was an ARC kindly provided through the author.
This book was a little out of my comfort zone. I love romantasy, but definitely more the fantasy strong and romance elements. Sci-Fi and dystopian are genres I have engaged with occasionally.
Initially the authors creation of a dystopian world had me hooked and I was taken by surprise with how much I enjoyed this book! The characters were engaging and the found family trope was evident from the beginning and had me gripped, wanting to discover how Mena and her team saved themselves and gained the freedom from the tyrant Bishop. Add in the hot Angel of Death, Azrael, and this book had everything for me.
Unfortunately, about halfway through, after they’d escaped from the Underground I started to struggle. There was so much world building I was excited to see where it went, but this was entirely from secondary characters in a way that made it really hard to understand the world that was being depicted and left me a little lost.
Magic was portrayed throughout the book and I loved watching how it developed, especially as the characters honed their skills as time went by. However, it seemed that some complex magic principals had been created by the author, these fell a bit short for me. Once again, I felt like everything was too complicated and I struggled to create an image in my mind of the story.
After struggling through, the last 20% was once again really good! It reached the crux of the story and I was gripped, there were so many plot twists I didn’t expect and it solidified my love for the characters.
Overall, it was a good book and I expect some of those who love dystopian and world building a little more than me will really enjoy it!
One question: when is the next book because I NEED IT NOW!! That ending, what did he do!! Honestly, I knew he was suspicious 🤨😅
Rated 4.25 ⭐️
I was totally hooked by this book from that very first chapter. I found the world super interesting, and the magic really unique and I was just constantly curious about Mena’s magic, I absolutely loved learning about her magic, and I’m so excited to see her grow with it.
I adored our main characters. I was obsessed with the chemistry, and the tension between Mena and Azrael was just ahhh, the slow burn was absolutely killing me, I do love a good slow burn though and this was done so so well.
I am absolutely obsessed with the found family theme in this book. I love our side characters, they each were written so well, each character had such a personality, I just loved reading about any of them. And of course, can’t forgot the spirits, I can just imagine them being the absolute cutest.
The start of this book was so so strong, and the pacing was amazing. Towards the middle though, it did feel like the pacing slowed a bit, and it felt like I was kind of missing information at times, I’ve had a busy week so that may have just been me missing things 😅, it definitely picked up at the end, I was literally on the edge of my seat with that ending. I am definitely also super excited to explore Mena’s home world in the second book, whenever they mention it I get more and more excited, it just sounds so cool, and I’m just so curious to see like the dynamic of the characters in that world.
Thank you so much to the amazing author for this advanced copy, absolutely forever grateful 💗
I ARC read The Upper World by Erica Jean, and I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity. This book completely pulled me in and did not let go.
This is one of those stories that you sink into... there’s so much happening, so many layers, and twists that keep unfolding in ways you don’t expect. It’s not a quick, mindless read. It’s one you actually experience, and honestly, that made it even better.
Mena was hands down one of my favorite parts of this book. She’s strong and resilient, but not in a way that feels forced or one dimensional. She carries so much, constantly putting others before herself, and you really feel that throughout the story. I loved watching her grow, struggle at times, and still keep going no matter what.
And Azrael?? Their bond is EVERYTHING. The connection between them felt so natural but also intense in the best way. It wasn’t rushed, it wasn’t overpowering; it just fit. Every interaction between them had me sucked in.
But I have to talk about Lou too because I absolutely loved her. The protective, motherly role she played for Mena just hit so hard. She wasn’t loud about it, but you could feel how deeply she cared in every moment. And that scene in the cave?? Yeah… I was not okay. That one had me crying.
The world building was immersive without being overwhelming, and I never felt lost, just completely pulled into this chaotic, emotional, and beautifully layered world. The found family vibes, the tension, and everything these characters go through, it just hits in a way I cannot put into words.
And that ending?? I’m gonna need the next book immediately. This one isn’t just a read, it’s a whole experience and I am here for it!
The Upper World by is a story of a stolen angel, Death who finds her, and the fate woven across worlds. The story starts with our FMC Mena and her team captive in the Underworld. I loved the oppression in this setting, and how Mena and the other ‘soldiers’ were silenced and controlled. I loved the mind travel and the hope of escape that Azrael, the MMC gives!
This was my first novel I’ve read centred around angels and I’m so here for this characterisation! I really loved the concept of the angels being able to gift and share their inherent powers, and the mind communication trope is a big yes for me!
Written in third person dual POV – this was a point of difference to many dystopian and romantasy books I’ve recently read.
The dystopian world building of the book is brilliant and leaves many worlds and magic systems to be explored in the upcoming books! Being from Sydney, I also loved the reference to the farm on Erth being in an old town in Australia!
The found family trope is highlighted by Emi and Mena's beautiful friendship. I love how cosy Lou is as a constant throughout the book set on the planet of dystopian future Erth.
And Malish - a beautiful touch to symbolise the depths of emotion between Mena and Azrael. This is a slooooooowwww burn!
Secrets, lies, who can you trust?
I really enjoyed the ending - many shocking revelations, leading to more questions! Then there's that little twisty character cliff hanger at the end...what?!?
I will definitely be reading books two and three when they release!
Thank you to @ericajeanwriter and @tiasdarklitsociety for the ARC for honest review.
The Upper World hooked me fast with its mix of angels, magic, and a rebellion brewing under the surface. I haven’t come across many stories that blend those elements this well, so I was immediately intrigued.
The character dynamics were one of my favorite parts. Everyone felt distinct and layered, and the chemistry within the group was chef’s kiss. Their bond is the kind that feels unshakeable — the kind you’d want on your side in any world, magical or otherwise. Azreal especially has that steady, dark, quietly powerful energy that makes you think, “Yep, I’d trust you with my life… and maybe my heart.” Mena is caring, smart, and strong, and it was genuinely nice to see someone finally take care of her for once.
The human‑world storyline didn’t feel essential to the plot other than helping build the romance between Mena and Azreal, but I still loved seeing the whole crew get back together. It added warmth and gave the story a breather in all the right places.
The magic training? Loved it. Watching this crew sharpen their abilities and turn into a full‑on badass unit gearing up for revenge was one of my favorite parts. It added tension, purpose, and that delicious “oh, they’re about to cause problems” energy.
Without spoiling anything, Mena’s journey to figure out who she is, what role she plays in the rebellion, and whether she can get her revenge and save others kept me turning pages. And then the book had the audacity — the nerve — to end on a cliffhanger. So yes, I’ll be needing the next installment (or the next two, if I read that correctly) sooner rather than later.
This is a magical, romantic and heart-warming story. I love found family books and the author excelled at this trope. Each member of Mena’s ‘family’ had a distinct personality with their own strengths and weaknesses. Together, they were a heart-warming bunch - it was clear they really cared about each other. I also really liked Lou and her motherly, caring vibes.
I also really liked the author’s take on Azrael, the Angel of Death - he’s supportive and kind and would do anything to protect Mena. Definitely your next book boyfriend. Mena is a strong and very likeable female protagonist. Fiercely loyal to her friends, physically strong, determined, strategic and powerful. She also has a softer side which makes her feel very relatable.
I really enjoyed Mena and Azrael’s romance - it’s a sweet love story and it was a refreshing change from the enemies-to-lovers trope.
The descriptions of Mena’s magic were vivid and detailed and I could picture it clearly. I also thought the magic itself was unique.
I particularly liked that Mena had to heal Bishop to succeed. The internal conflict around helping an enemy was really interesting.
This story celebrates friendship and love, loyalty and courage. The themes of carrying guilt and regret for past actions, and some of the group wanting to forget who they were before, had a lot of emotional depth. There were some darker themes, particularly at the beginning and end but, ultimately, this story has a lot of warmth and hope. I really look forward to reading the sequel.
An ethereal tale about corrupt powers, endurance, friendship and destiny.
✨️ Bonded/fated mates ✨️ Forbidden Love ✨️ Complex Magic Systems ✨️ Found Family ✨️ Amnesia ✨️ Hidden Identities ✨️ Rebellion ✨️ Totalitarian Regime
Mena is a powerful being trapped underground in a dystopian world known as Erth, controlled by a sadistic tyrant known as 'Bishop'. Mena and her close friends carry out unthinkable acts under Bishop's command, envisioning ways in which they can escape some day.
Azrael is the Angel of Death and is on a quest to retrieve Mena and her team from the clutches of Bishop. Mena and her team in their first act of rebellion break free with the guidance of Azrael. Mena and her team must make a big sacrifice if they are to evade Bishop and put an end to his regime. The FMC then proceeds on a journey of self discovery, harvesting of power and a love that transcends anything she has ever felt before.
This dystopian romantasy was a refreshing read, I really enjoyed the magic system and hierarchy, the frienships and banter felt really natural. Azrael and Mena's relationship is wholesome, Azrael is the epitomy of a walking green flag and I am so here for it.
The twist at the end had me hooked and I really need to know now what happens in the next one! 🙌🏻
DYSTOPIAN IS SO BACK BABY!!!! I never want to leave worlds like THE UPPER WORLD because Erica Jean put so much dedication into the immersive read that it just devours you and spits you out!
And I'm grateful for it.
"To the dreamers. This is for those learning to be unafraid and unashamed to reach within, find your power and seize it.”
And sieze it THEY DID. Every character was multi-faceted and the details the secondary characters brought to THE UPPER WORLD gave you such a whole story and I love that they weren't just side pieces...they were tangible entities created with care.
I'm so addicted to Angels...like is this also the year authors do them the justice they deserve? Because holy shiiiiii did I love them here!
"She was reminiscent of dreams he could not make sense of, and he wondered if that was why, despite being at this for weeks, his chest seemed to thud erratically whenever he found himself near her.”
I MEAN?!?!? Ugh, my heart. The romance was beautiful, though with the time jumps it got a little mixed up in the strings so you do have to LOCK IN for the full impact. But I truly love the time jumps because it gives you a full kindling love filled with yearning while still carrying the importance of the actual plot. To me, that's the most important thing - while I do love romance (hello, I'm a heavy romantasy/contemporary romance girly), I want A FREAKING PLOT and we get that here in spades!!!
“Regardless of what we are yet to face, you will always be the light that guides me to envision a brighter future. Let us build a better world, one where this smile of yours is as common as the sun rising each day and the stars whispering each night.”
The ending though...MY JAW IS DROPPED and it's staying there until the next. Y'all this is only BOOK ONE?! We are in for so much more insanity and I can't waitttttt!
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER!!!! I loved the plot and the idea of the story, but the way it was written was just not to my preference. I mean, the conversations between the characters were limited, and everything felt like it was shown in fast forward like what happens in storybooks. The emphasis on the individual characters wasn’t strong enough, in my opinion, which made it difficult for me to understand their chemistry. The main leads were strong and really good, I loved them, but their connection wasn’t shown or portrayed well. The romance was lacking. The slow burn was attempted, but it only worked in certain parts. This book felt more like a long story rather than a full novel. I did love the characters, the idea, the theme, and the storyline, basically everything about it. The ending left hint for the next book, tho it was a happy ending for the main leads atleast. It had good plot twists. The animosity and the torture took up good space too. But, the only thing it lacked was the writing style. It wasn’t interactive in my opinion and could be improved so much to give it a more lively feeling. I hope the next part of the book won’t have this issue. Since that was the only thing that bothered me, I would give it a 4/5.
I was lucky to receive the opportunity to be an ARC reader for book one of World Of The Valley.
This was such a beautiful book and I adored it! You really got swept in straight away at the beginning and it kept you hooked. I loved the found family dynamic, each character was beautifully written with their own characteristics, quirks and flaws, it felt authentic and natural. The world building was intriguing and I loved the whole idea of how our reliance on technology can have a nefarious impact as well as an advancement. Our FMC Mena was such a loveable character. I felt I resonated with her a lot throughout the book, with her strong capable mind set but people pleasing quality which she did struggle with at times. I loved her different relationship dynamics with each of her friends as well. Azrael I loved because he was such a sweetheart! It was refreshing to read about a MMC who wasn’t all harsh and brash, although he could pick his moments when he needed to! And I loved how he was just all for Mena throughout the book. Overall I loved this book and the ending was so jaw dropping that I’m dying to read the next one!
This is a dystopian fantasy with angels, found family, and a whole lot of emotional stakes.
I’ll be honest — I found it a little harder to get into at the start, just with everything being set up, but once it gets going there’s a lot to sink into.
The concept is really interesting — the split between the Underground and the Upper World, angels, control, and the idea of being created for a purpose you don’t agree with. There’s definitely a darker edge running through it.
I really liked the found family dynamic — that core group and their bond gives the story a lot of heart, especially with everything they’re going through. Mena is strong but still quite layered, and I liked seeing the more vulnerable side to her as well.
Azrael was a nice change from the typical MMC — softer, protective, and very much there for her, which I always appreciate.
There’s a lot going on with the world-building and bigger plot, and you can feel it building towards something bigger as the story progresses.
Overall, an intriguing start with a strong emotional core — especially if you enjoy dystopian fantasy, angels, and found family dynamics.
In this Dystopian Fantasy debut by Australian author Erica Jean, Worlds of the Valley Book 1 begins with a bang.
Teams of people, one with magical powers, are working for a man called Bishop. They are an elite team and work as his assassins.
Mena can share her magical powers with her team and that's enabled them to be the best of the best. But, during a dream, Mena meets a man who tells her that things aren't as they appear.
With angels, amnesia, friendship, love, and betrayal, The Upper World serves up an entire bag of goodies in just the first book of the series.
There was tension and friendship, slow burn romance, and surprises! I loved the combination of a dystopian Erth with fantastical magic!
The friendships were so integral to this book for me. I loved Emi and was suspicious of others and their motives.
The ending! Oh my goodness! When does book 2 come out?!? I need to know what happens next. 😩
If you like Dystopia but you want a side of fantasy or you want to dive headfirst into new world building and commit to a series, you may like this book.
The Upper World is everything you need from a dystopian romantasy.
The characters are brilliant, Mena the FMC is so creatively written, I felt attachment straight away. The journey she had to endure is heroic in itself. Along with her caring, strong and lovable personality which shone throughout.
The MMC Azrael is probably one of my favourites of all time! Someone powerful but doesn't show that side unless pushed. I have a soft spot for Azrael for his own journey through this world of forbidden love which pulls on your heartstrings. I couldn't stop smiling when reading from how courageous he is!
Reading page after page, I didn't think the next chapter could bring anything else. I was so wrong, the unravelling of the story is handled tremendously. The rhythm of the journey flows effortlessly. From the characters to the world building it was never stale. I was turning pages so fast, due to the love and passion this book has been crafted with.
Honestly it has been a pleasure to read The Upper World and I am so ready for the next release.
This book deserves every bit of hype there is and I implore you to pick it up!
I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this book! I couldn’t put it down. I quickly fell in love with Mena, the FMC, and Azrael, the MMC. Mena is a stolen angel who ends up in a place that feels more like a prison than a sanctuary. There, she’s forced to do whatever the leader, Bishop, demands while he keeps everyone under constant surveillance. Mena and the others possess powerful abilities, but their memories have been stolen, leaving them with no recollection of who they once were. Azrael is sent on a mission to rescue Mena, but things quickly become complicated when he begins to fall for her. Determined to protect her at all costs, he finds himself risking everything. The story follows Mena, Azrael, and their friends as they rise up in rebellion to free others like themselves and ultimately save Erth. Overall, this was a fantastic read. I loved the magic each character possesses, and I’m always feral for a story with fated mates. This one also includes soul ties, which I absolutely adored!

thank you so much to the author for the early copy! all opinions are my own!
easiest three star rating i've ever given in my life and i feel so sad about it. this book truly has the potential. it starts off super strong and with a promising development but around 40%, the whole thing gets stuck. it felt like a chore to pick it up at the end because of how sloooooow everything was going, at one point i just wanted a battle, some tension, a fight bigger than a verbal one, anything. instead, we got the famous "yearning" that doesn't feel like it at all. i feel the editors should've cut down the infodumping scenes a little and not make it so much "she said this, he said that" instead of showing all the development. the ending at least kept me intrigued and now i really wanna know how the story continues and if the author will improve her writing. the characters are all amazing tho, 10/10 no notes. and i need more chapters from the male POV, just saying. but it was a good book, at least it was entertaining!
First, thank you so much, Erica for this as an ARC story!
I was hooked right away! I love that we have a kickass, resiliant FMC. You know that she is a true leader- the way that she puts herself before others, and genuinely cares about others. Her strength keeps her going, no matter what struggles are thrown her way. These FMCs are my favorite to read, because we can see parts of ourselves in them. The determination, desire, fight- no matter what the world has given us.
Azrael was raised in a world where love is not accepted. Despite how he was taught- his bond with Mena surpasses everything. That is the only way that I can think to describe it- EVERYTHING. The way that man would burn the world for her.... *FIRE* The two of them must journey to not only save their worlds, but to fight through everything around them for love.
This book took me a while to get through—I'm not sure if it's because it's a thicker book or just one of those stories that naturally demands a slower read. There’s so much happening on every page: twists, turns, and layers to the characters that I never quite expected.
One of my favorite parts was watching Mena develop as the story unfolded. She’s a strong female main character, but not in a flat or predictable way. Because so much happens throughout the book, we get to see her grow into herself little by little with each challenge and plot twist. That character evolution made the journey really rewarding.
The story itself was engaging and interesting the whole way through. While I never quite had that “I can’t put this down” feeling, I was always curious about where the story was going next.
And the cliffhanger at the end?! Oh my gosh. It absolutely did its job because now I already want to pick up the next book to see what happens.
In a world that demands their cruelty, they are fated to love - find out more in The Upper World.
Stolen from her home as a child, Mena has been trained as a weapon to carry out the awful orders of the man who took her. With her team, she dreams of freedom.
When she meets Azrael, Angel of Death, her dreams become a possibility. As she begins a new life outside the confines of her youth, her only thoughts are of revenge…and the enigmatic angel who rescued her.
This dystopian urban fantasy was a fantastic read - and a wonderful debut. Dealing with lost identities, found family and forbidden love, it created an immersive world that was all too easy to lose yourself in.
It is a slow burn, open door romance that does not progress too far because of the plot. There are multiple potential triggers in the story, including torture, kidnapping, abuse and shared trauma/guilt.
If you need avenging angels and found family in your next read, be sure to add The Upper World to your TBR.
Mena and her team are forced to be a ruthless team under constant control by the people in the Underground. Azrael is the angel of death from the Upper World. Can they work together to fix their two worlds?
There’s a couple things that this book does really well. The found family vibe among Mena and her people is really lovely to read. Even the more challenging parts. The yearning that Azrael has for Mena is so wonderful. He certainly falls first and hard.
Where I struggled with this book was in the middle. There’s some pacing issues (likely cause of the time jumps) and some of the time spent on character interpersonal relationships that ended up not needing that much time spent on it. It really slowed down the pace of the story and didn’t keep my attention.
This is an arc review. Arc received from the author. All opinions are my own.
