This is the story of my first salvage, seeking out a missing child that my mentor has warned me away from.
What I find is more than one child: I find my destiny.
"They call me the Destroyer."
I've been banished to the desert for years after saving a life I should have let the darkness take. But as an earth elemental, I couldn't turn from the pleas for help any more than I can turn from them this time. Except that this time, I have a Tracker to deal with.
This is about to get interesting.
**30K Word Standalone Novella**
You can read more about Rylee, starting with Priceless, the first book in her series.
You can read more about Larkspur starting with Recurve, the first book in her series.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
This is a great introduction to Rylee and Lark in the world of Rylee Adamson and Elemental Series. I very much enjoyed this novella and the glimpse we get into both characters. Can't wait to dive into both series.
Short story full of action, paranormal creatures and magic. And not one but two kick-ass heroines. Who can ask for more? I think it's best read after Rylee Adamson and before starting The Elemental series.
ehhhh I don't know about this series. I'm not going to write it off completely because I know this is a novella and they aren't exactly the best judge for a series, but I'm definitely not jumping at the bit to start book 1.
I decided to read this novella because the author recommended to before starting ROOTBOUND, and having loved her RYLEE ADAMSON and ELEMENTAL series, I figured that I couldn't go wrong with twice the Shannon Mayer heroine power! ELEMENTALLY PRICELESS was a hoot because I got to learn about the Tracker's first salvage while also getting psyched up for Lark's 5th installment. The chapters alternated POVs which is normally not my favourite style of writing, but in this instance I loved it due to my in depth knowledge of both characters.
I purchased this book simply bc I was interested in Larkspur. It gave me some insight on Lark & serves as a helpful preview on if I'd enjoy a series with Lark as the protagonist. The answer is yes. I'll be happily buying Lark's series. However this left me with a question If Ryle is immune how can an elemental spell her memory away? Seems a bit inconsistent to me.
Fabulous novella 0.5 in the Rylee series. I’ve just started larks series, so this really intrigued me, at this stage (after book 1) I don’t know much about her at this stage she’s young and doesn’t think she has any power ……. Obviously 20/30 years later this isn’t the case and ALOT has happened.
I’ve just finished book 8 in rylees series and felt like I needed to go back and read this one. Read via kindle unlimited I believe this was 100% worth the read if your like me and need more of a background.
A couple characters that were bought up transfer across both series and hints of the past are made. It definitely makes me need to know more. I feel like I need to listen to more of larks journey before listening to the final book in rylees series.
Like many other readers of the Elementals Series, I was so confused by the start of Rootbound that I went back to the reviews and found that people recommended reading this to fill in a few of the HUGE gaps. I agree with other reviewers that Elementally Priceless absolutely needs to be updated, but I was glad that it filled in for at least a few of the years of Lark’s life that we missed out in between books. What I find unfortunate though, is that reading this just made me feel like I had to put a stop to the Elemental Series to go read all the Rylee books and I REALLY didn’t want to do that, since I was planning on waiting until I finished this series... Anyway, three-stars for at least helping me understand a tiny bit of Lark at the beginning of Rootbound.
There is a Graphic Audio production of the whole Rylee Adamson Series, which includes 10 books of the series and five short stories. All this was included in my audible subscription. That's how I decided to listen to all the books and short stories. Otherwise it would have been pretty costly to listen to this production.
The first two short stories and book 1 and two were 3.5 and 4 stars. The rest of the series was a solid three stars rating.
At some point the story felt to drawn out but since I had passed the point of no return, where I just wanted to know who the stories ends I finished 15 Graphicaudio books. I think the story could have been shortened without loosing anything. From the beginning two things were predictable: One (and even more) person was Demon possessed and this person will die. And also there will be an Elemental involved, whom we meet again in book 9.
I liked Rylee and Mayer killed off some of the good guys. Two deaths were not really necessary and didn't feel right.
I would say this is a drawn out series, but okay, to listen for free in the graphic audio version. Stay away from the series if you tend to dnf series and hate it if the author kills beloved important side charcters.
I trailed my fingers down the side of the crumpled missing person poster, taking in the hard feel of weathered paper.
This is a back story to both the Rylee Adamson and Elemental series. Rylee has taken it upon herself to rescue a missing child without benefit of back up. She manages to convince a neighbor to drive her in the direction of the pull that she feels from the child. The neighbor turns out to be more than he seems.
In Death Valley, Lark is overcome by the need to leave her prison and help a girl she does not know. Knowing that to do so will cause her to be banished.
The two meet in Las Vegas in a common goal to save the child.
An interesting story with mythological creatures and the age old battle of good versus evil. I enjoyed seeing where Rylee started. I have not started the Elemental series but see that I should add it to my TBR.
Wow, this was so much fun. I'm doing the chronological reading on Shannon's website so reading this after the first few Elemental books and the first couple novellas with Rylee was really fun. Got to learn more about Rylee and see how she's growing into her power (although it'd be nice if these novellas stop erasing her freaking memory!!). I loved getting to touch base with Larkspur a minute and see how her banishment is going - 20 years in! Crazy! Listened via graphic audio so the production was top notch. I would love more crossovers of different UF/Fantasy series by an author!
I am enjoying listening to the Rylee Adamson series. I was recommended this series and started listening to the graphic audios with the first small novella and now this second novella. I have thoroughly enjoyed the story thus far. I believe the next thing to listen to is the actual book one and I'm so excited! I will be starting that right away. I wasn't sure at first about these graphic audios however, I'm really enjoying listening to them! This book is very well done.
Not sure how much I’m into this series. I liked them…but couldn’t get into the series, which is weird, cuz the Midlife Bounty Hunter was love at first sight. Gonna try the first novel and see. Although, Kit made me sad. He deserved better, poor bugger.
Amazing little taste for what's to come! I will definitely be getting the rest of the series! The graphic audio on this one is really good and I don't usually like graphic audio.
I knew from the first page I was going to love this series and it has become one of my favourites. I read it years ago and now I am leaving a review. Rylee has the best and the worst job, to find those who are lost, the ones no one can find but it is not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes it will break your heart. It is an intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller filled with tension. The story includes alliances, threats, betrayal, riddles, and plots, all infused with a touch of humour to keep the pages turning.
I haven't read any of Shannon Mayer's books before and I don't know what I've been waiting for. This story and the introduction to Rylee and Lark was amazing. Now I just have to choose which one to read next - Rylee or Lark? No matter who I start with I know I'm going to love both of them!
I loved Rylee and Lark's stories meeting! I loved this short snippet into Lark's banishment and Rylee's beginning. I want more of Rylee and Lark together. They are truly bad**s!!
First I have to say.. squuuuueeeeeeeeee (clears my throat) Okay, now onto serious business… (LOL) I love, love, love this series. It’s one of my favorites and has been since I read the first book, Priceless. Rylee is a kick-ass, sword wielding, sword handing, fighter who has a big heart.I am thankful to get to see how she got started. We heard of her first salvage in a few cases of the series and I always wondered about it. So now.. we get to it.
Rylee has always been independent and stubborn. No lying there and we all know it but she has something special about her that is unlike anyone else. As a tracker she can find anyone, anywhere, except her sister. As her ‘first’ salvage gets started Rylee sees a poster of a missing child on a bulletin board. Jonathan, age 10… pushing out her gift she gets a trail to him. The kid is still alive. The poster said he was missing for two years now, but his thread was strong. She could do this. Giselle may not think she was ready to go on a salvage alone but she was. Or so she thought. But how could she get to the kid?
Luckily her neighbor, Caleb, nice hunky man cake that he was had a bike and she had money. She manages to get him to agree to take her to a ‘friend’. After a few hours of traveling they stop to eat and to her horror what does she find? Agent Liam O’Shea up her ass. Of course the fact that Rylee is packing heat in the way of a frigging sword, and knives does not pass O’Shea. He takes them. Of course. Ass. The kids get food and set back off on the road. The thread leads them to where? Vegas baby. HA!
This is where Rylee meets Dox for the first time. Big blue ogre that is friendly and living off the tips and money he makes running a bar off the strip. (laughs) Of course Rylee makes herself known to him and they chat. He tells her about the big uglies in the area and she sets off to find Jonathan. But what Rylee doesn't know is that things are already set into motion. Things she can’t change or stop. As Rylee narrows down where Jonathan is she meets Lark. An elemental who is also there to save the child. As a favor to someone else. This child needs to be taken somewhere the elemental can send him to keep him safe. He is a special kid after all.
Rylee and Lark seem to be agreeable on one thing.. neither of them can take no for an answer so they go into get the kid together. As with any other salvage there is no way to know what will happen. But when all hell breaks loose they work together to beat down the big ugly. And to the uglies surprise Rylee is able to do him harm. Something that is not easy. Lark is able to get herself, Rylee and Jonathan out thanks to her elemental gift and they head back to her place.
But what happens next sets us up for the next adventure for team Rylee. That is all I will say.. well that and I am veeeeeeery anxious for the next installment in the Rylee Adamson series. I need it like now!!!
First, let me lay out some series issues in the hope I can save any other readers the trouble I ran into...
There are two series related to "Elementally Priceless": the 'Rylee Adamson' series and 'The Elemental' series. At the time of my reading, two prequels were listed in the chronology for both series: "Tracking Magic" at 0.25 and "Elementally Priceless" at 0.5. Since then, "Tracking Magic" was removed from "The Elemental" chronology list.
After reading both prequels as well as the first novel in "The Elemental," I'll agree that "Tracking Magic" & ”Elementally Priceless" should stay in that order for the Rylee series. However, ”Tracking Magic" might belong in the 'Elemental' oeuvre (certainty would require further reading of that series but I'm not impressed thus far and unsure I want to commit more time) but not chronologically before book one and "Elementally Priceless" is set sometime several decades in the future past book one so shouldn't be listed as a prequel.
So, as far as I know, if you read the two books as prequels for the Rylee series you'll be fine. If, however, you're reading them as prequels for the Elemental series you'll be all kinds of confused (like I was).
Now, rating the story in and of itself - I was entertained but the plotline definitely held the "prequel" feel (layers of subtext you'll understand better from reading other books in the series, heavy-handed foreshadowing telling you which characters will appear in future books, etc). I thought "Tracking Magic" was better; I'm really not empathizing much with Lark as a protagonist.
3.5⭐️ “Elementally Priceless” is a novella in Shannon Mayer’s Rylee Adamson Series. The events in this book take place before book one “Priceless”. Told by Rylee and Lakspur povs.
Rylee Adamson is a Tracker, which means she has the ability to find missing people. She has been told by her mentor that she isn’t ready to take on a job by herself. When she sees a poster for a missing boy she know she must find him. This is no ordinary missing child and getting help from a powerful Elemental she just meet is the only way for them to make it out alive.
A quick little read. A great little addition to the Rylee Adamson series.
Having seen the growth and confidence in Rylee’s character from this book to “Tracking Magic” was great. But unfortunately once again she has had her memories taken. Obviously her “Immune” ability isn’t working. Two books down and twice she has had important events taken away.
Meeting Larkspur, Red, Kit, Dox was fun and enjoyable.
Hey everyone! I just have to share my excitement about this incredible elemental story. It’s kind of a prequel, and honestly, it’s got me totally hooked—so much so that I can’t wait to dive into the whole series! I just learned a bit about Riley Adams, who has this amazing tracker that can find missing kids, and she believes she’s an elemental herself. During her solo hunt for a child who can write prophecies and is trapped by a shadow lord, she discovers they’re really dangerous. She’s new to all of this and making new friends along the way, which makes the story even more engaging. It’s a super enjoyable urban fantasy read—no spicy stuff, which I really appreciate—and it’s packed with action to keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m definitely going to keep going with the series, especially since they’re currently free on Audible through graphic audio. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
I hadn’t read anything by Shannon Mayer, but I generally love the GraphicAudio dramatizations and I was looking for an audiobook included in Audible plus. This was a fast read with some great performances.
This novella introduces Rylee, a tracker who has the ability to track anyone. She’s training to find lost children, but she’s not supposed to take on a case alone. When her mentor is out of town, though, she gets a strong lead on a kid and decides to save him. She’s followed by FBI Agent O'Shea who thinks she was responsible for her sister’s disappearance. Meanwhile her mentor goes for help from Larkspur, an elemental banished to Death Valley who is forging a katana for …. someone - she just doesn’t know who yet.
The novella definitely hooked me enough to go on to the main series. It’s slightly reminiscent of the grit, humor and mythological connections of the Kate Daniels series.
With all the hubris a 19year old can muster, tracker Rylee Jameson’s determined to perform her first solo salvage maybe that would ease some of the pain from her parents rejecting her. Rylee’s pulled to retrieve a child that’s been missing for two years, not easy for a normal but easy for someone with her natural tracker powers. Enlisting help from the next door hottie in training, Rylee sets off.
Because right doesn’t win every time, earth elemental Larkspur’s serving her desert penance more or less in silence. But bound to be neutral or help the one that asks for help first, Lark’s more than willing to suffer an even greater punishment when she’s approached by a demon to stop one who’s coming, Lark doesn’t agree or disagree with words but takes matters into her own hands.
