Recognized in both publishing and TV, Jane Hissey is best known for her children’s book series Old Bear & Friends. First published in 1986, it later became the inspiration for BAFTA award winning TV series Old Bear Stories.

As a child growing up in Norfolk, Jane developed a love for writing and drawing. Her holidays were spent wandering fields and lanes, conjuring up fantastical worlds with pencil and sketchbook. When she wasn’t doing this she would spend days at a time sitting in her favorite tree, reading the likes of Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton.

Jane continued to nurture her passion through adulthood and studied illustration and design, later becoming an Art teacher and settling down with her husband Ivan and their 3 children Owen, Alison & Ralph. Inspired by a childhood teddy bear given to her by her grandmother, Jane has written and illustrated more than 20 picture books featuring Old Bear.

Her tales of adventure and discovery are both heartwarming and fun, captivating the imaginations of children and adults alike. Her illustrations are unique, using layers of colour pencil to build a more full & finely detailed finished image.

The Old Bear & Friends series has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide!

A lovely story about some toys who wake in the night because they think they have heard a ghost. The ‘ghost’ turns out to be an owl toy who lives on top of the wardrobe. The story follows little bear as he makes friends with the owl. A lovely story to read to EYFS/KS1 children.

Little Bear hears a strange sound, and wakes all the other toys to investigate the noise. Old Bear discovers what is making the sound, and they all soon discover that not everyone is awake during the day, or sleep at night. In the process of their night time adventure a new friend is made.

A thump in the night, followed by a Whooo noise, makes the toys realise that there is something else in the room. On top of the wardrobe Hoot had been living, in his nest of woolly socks, but now the nest had fallen to the floor, broken. The toys invite Hoot for a midnight snack, wondering why they had never seen him before. Hoot explained that he was an owl and that they only come out at night. Looking at Hoot's broken nest they realise that it is made of all the odd socks that they had lost. Little Bear finds Hoot a woolly bobble hat for a new nest, then helps him to make it comfortable on his wardrobe. Little Bear paired all the socks and then they all went back to bed. An easy book with soft, cuddly characters. A good cuddly book to read to your children at bedtime.

Beautifully illustrated: calm, a little fuzzy, and snuggly. The story, of Hoot, who lives on top of the cupboard but only wakes up at night, is mildly charming. Little Bear and the rest are at first alarmed by her mysterious sounds, but they eventually become friends. The idea of toys having their own lives at night is always pleasant. The illustrations are equally if not more important than the text. A good story for bedtime.

I'm doing a storytime on owls for 3-5 yr olds and the children's librarians at my local library found this one for me. It is so adorable! It's about a group of stuffed animals who hear a strange noise in the night and Little Bear discovers a new and helpful friend named Hoot (a fluffy stuffed owl with a little blue apron). I love how the stuffed animals discover how to do shadow puppets!
