What a mess of a book . The title purports to be the complete history of rock music . The authors cites his main point of reference as an avid reading of the Music papers New Musical Express and Melody maker . The book appears to adopt virtually all of their biases .
The book purports to cover 1950-2025. Yet the massive turning point in popular music the 1950's is covered in a flash. Elvis Presley is only mentioned twice only to refer to him as Elvis the Pelvis and to berate him for appearing to be a rebel when he was not and having the Nickname Elvis the Pelvis . There is no mention of the sublime Sun Records sessions or the fact that he was responsible for nearly 50 per cent of popular record sales in the 50's not the impact he had on subsequent acts such as The Beatles and many others others .
The book lacks chapters and any real sense of structure . It blurs between the different decades and post 2000 section is simply a list of what he considers to be the best albums released by certain artist in that period .
There is also no sense of the ebb and flow of popular music during the period it covers . There is no mention of Motown and not a single mention of Marvin Gaye. Nor is there any mention of Blur who were so prominent in later periods .
He also worships many of the sacred cows of rock critics , for example describing Captain Beefheart 's album Trout mask replica as one of the greatest works of rock , if not the greatest work of rock of all time .He of course considers Van Morrisons Astral Weeks to be his greatest album (give me Moondance any day!)
There are also numerous typos , missing words and the index when tested simply does not work , one feels it was either put together for another edition or simply another book . None of the reference pages I checked in the index were accurate .
I can only assume this is self published without the aid of an editor .,
