All That Waits Beyond the Dawn: A (Mistaken) Mail-Order Bride Romance

Rate this book
You have nothing on your person apart from a hastily packed suitcase and the dress you came into town wearing, on the run from trouble back home. Too bad the sheriff’s missing a bride that matches your description.

You swore you’d never look back after what happened back east. Traveling west was supposed to be your escape, a place where no one would know your name or the horrors you’d left behind, but when Sheriff John Thorne mistakes you for the mail-order bride that he’s been waiting months for, it threatens to undo everything you’ve worked so hard to attain.

John isn’t what you expected though. He’s patient where others have been cruel and quiet where others have judged, and his patience allows you to learn the beauty of the mountains and the hush of the prairie dawn. And when the people of his town start to feel like the family you never had, you begin to wonder if you’ve stumbled into the life you were meant to find.

Yet the past doesn’t stay buried for long. Whispers travel fast and men travel faster, danger having a way of crossing even the wildest plains. When your secret threatens to destroy everything you’ve built with John, you’ll have to tell him the truth and risk losing him forever…or run again before the past catches up for good.

A sweeping western romance full of mistaken identities, passion, and forgiveness, All That Waits Beyond the Dawn will make you believe that love can bloom even in the harshest landscapes—and that sometimes, the only way to outrun your past is to face it.

Sticking with the historical Wild West theme after Blood Meridian but in a much more enjoyable manner :P

Devoured this in a day (less). Read the original shorter story (iykyk) and this translates very nicely to a full-length and wonderfully paced plot that unfolded with just the right amount of anticipation. I like being able to guess the ins and outs of characters (e.g. MC's backstory) without it being a glaringly-obvious implication!

The plot arc seriously had me on the edge of my seat, especially during the reprise, but at the same time I really felt I got to trust the characterizations of our protagonists in knowing they wouldn't betray each other (e.g. Thorne rescuing his wife--in a crappy novel I feel there'd be some miscommunication/he-said/she-said drama, but it was handled in a lovely warm and fuzzy way here). I never felt like any of the characters lost any of their identities in translation either. I think some of the introductions could've been justified a bit better (e.g. introducing Beau by name--not sure the nickname justification still stands as well?) but that's a triviality.
