I feel like they missed a golden opportunity to give us a story where a person doesn't have to choose. That Tems gets her ending with both Caspen and Leo. Because otherwise, what was the point? The entire premise of the book was the choice, but sometimes we simply cannot choose. I think it's lazy to have it end in that way to only jump into a prequel (unless that's buying us some time). Tems' story doesnt feel like it's done. So far everyone else has had to make a choice - resurrect Caspen, so that he can make a choice. And give us some fraternal twins please! Thanks.
Firstly, thank you to NetGalley for the free ARC copy of Kneel Before Me. I was ridiculously excited to be approved for this one because after the absolute fever dream that was The Kiss of the Basilisk, there was no way I wasn't jumping straight back into Straube's wonderfully unhinged world.
Plot synopsis: This book takes us back in time and follows Tem's mother, Daphne, in the prequel to Tem's story. And apparently the family tradition is making incredibly questionable romantic choices, because once again we are faced with the ultimate dilemma: do you choose the prince or the basilisk? Apparently this family tree has a very specific type.
Review: Kneel Before Me was definitely the calmer, more emotionally sensitive sibling of the trilogy, which is a very strange sentence to write when discussing a book involving basilisks, princes and some truly questionable situations.
Compared to the other two books, this one felt much less extreme and much more focused on Daphne as a character. Straube clearly made an effort to explore consent, agency and Daphne's emotional journey, which is obviously important. The issue is that, as a reader coming from the previous books, you are already invested in the chaos rather than necessarily the emotional depth. It is difficult to become too concerned about the characters' personal growth when you've just come from books that made you question whether the author had any limits whatsoever. It felt a little like being invited back to the same party, only this time everyone has decided to behave themselves. Sensible? Yes. Enjoyable? Less so. After the absolute madness of the previous books, it did leave me wondering where the chaos had gone. Where was the eyebrow raising shocking scenes?
There were still moments that had me wondering what goes through Straubes mind. The 84% mark had me howling when Kronos reveals his special power. No spoilers, but if you've read it, you know exactly what I mean. I genuinely had to put the book down for a minute and question the creative process that led us there.
This book also finally explains why Caspen becomes such a wet flannel by the final book. Turns out Mummy and Daddy issues. Who could have predicted that?
The dialogue still felt quite choppy at times, and the writing occasionally had the maturity level of a teenager who has just discovered dramatic declarations and forbidden romance. But would that stop me picking up another Straube book? Absolutely not. Because this woman writes controversial, chaotic, completely unhinged smut like nobody else.
Would I recommend this for beautifully crafted prose? Hell no. Would I recommend it for someone who wants a wild ride, questionable decisions and scenes that make you say “what did I just read?” while continuing to turn the pages? Absolutely.

Did I need a story about Tem's parents? I absolutely did not. Did I drop everything the moment I got approved, knowing I was in for a ride? Yes, yes, most definitely. Am I embarrassed to admit? Not in the slightest. Sometimes, book people take themselves too seriously and yes, I absolutely agree, some books have changed me and altered my brain chemistry, for sure. But, what I have found in Lindsay Straube (and I actually think she's quite honest in her intentions) is a BLOODY GOOD TIME. The perfect escapism, honestly, I am guaranteed to detach from reality and work and laundry and just have fun reading about some questionable characters making questionable decisions. 10/10 on that respect!
In terms of this actual story, I liked Daphne even less than Tem (tall task!) and I thought the premise (her decision to not have sex until she's in love) very weak as a concept, giving the nature of the book. I appreciate that maybe Lindsay wanted to emphasise more on the idea of consent, but overall, it just felt unrealistic (what a comment for this book, ha!) and very weak and extortionately dragged out. If anything, if you've been treated like a piece of meat your whole life, surely you can tell how different Kronos is to everyone else and not torture him, yourself and us for 400+ pages, he's the biggest green flag to have walked the realm! Love him so much, he's by miles the highlight of the book, no notes. Maximus on the other hand, ugh, he grated on me so many times and I felt like there was never truly a comparison/ competition between the two of them. Which made the story a bit less fun, to be honest. Caspian's story was also interesting to read, I would say that in this prequel there has definitely taken a lot more care and consideration of emotions and depth, which we were not necessarily in need of, but worked quite well in the end.
In a nutshell, if you've read the previous two books, this is very much in the same vain. I don't know hat Lindsay puts in her books, but you end up inhaling them in two sittings despite their length. This is not going to challenge your intellect, but you'll have a jolly good time reading! Thank you to Lindsay Straube, Quercus Books | Arcadia and NetGalley for this review copy, all opinions are my own.
I genuinely wasn’t sure I even wanted to read Kneel Before Me after how pissed off book two left me… and then I requested the eARC anyway.
This being a prequel about Daphne and Kronos was refreshing because I didn’t have to deal with Tem annoying me, but WHY did we need Caspen’s POV?! Somehow I hate him even more now, especially knowing everything he knew about Tem’s parents.
I also don’t appreciate Lindsay somehow making me feel bad for Maximus?! Losing his first love and the mother of his child, being forced into a marriage competition while grieving, and then falling for Daphne while she kept him at arm’s length and used him to help Kronos… I unfortunately understand how the villain was made. Don’t get me wrong, he takes things WAY too far, but I hate that I understand him now.
Daphne and Kronos were easily the best part. Their relationship reminded me more of Tem and Leo, and Kronos actually respected her boundaries, was honest with her, and changed things about himself to be what she needed. He basically proved basilisks CAN change, they’re just selfish and usually don’t want to. The definition of if he wanted to, he would. Also, waiting until 86% to finally do the deed in THIS series?! Shocking.
As for everyone else, this was NOT the Apollo I loved in book two, I wanted more Agnes, and Caspen’s mom is so selfish I can absolutely see where he gets it from. Somehow even his dad had me understanding how he eventually lost his shit. That whole family is messy as hell.
Overall, I liked having more plot and less smut, but there were also stretches where it felt like nothing was happening. I expected more of the unhinged chaos from this series. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t think I’d recommend it or ever pick it up again.
**I received this eARC from NetGalley. Thank you for this opportunity! All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily. **

Thank you Lindsay and NetGalley for an advance reader copy of Kneel Before Me 😭 I was dreading waiting until October for my preorder to deliver because it was going to ship with another book.
IM BIASED, I mentally gave this book five stars as soon as she had announced a prequel to Kiss of the Basilisk, because Lindsay can do no wrong with the Split or Swallow series in my eyes. I willfully ignored any issues that other readers may have. It was more similar to the first book than I was expecting BUT now you can see where / why Tem Cas and Theo get their characteristics from and are the way they are (which could also be appreciated). I might like this one a bit more than Between Two Kings, I loved Daphnes character more than I was expecting. Definitely wished for even more of Apollo but I get it , this book isn’t about him. In my opinion the spice wasn’t as wild as KOTB/ BTK, but there was still a couple scenes that had my jaw dropped 👀. Even knowing some of the things that were going to happen because of KOTB, I still cried in the end.
Readers going into the Split or Swallow series should still read Kiss of the Basilisk first, then Between Two Kings, before this prequel (there are just deeper explanations in those books, and Kneel Before Me is written as if readers are already familiar with the basilisk way- otherwise it would just be even more repetitive)
Big thanks to Enetgalley for the ARC to book 3 in the Spit or Swallow series I loved the first 2 books in this series, was I devasted at the end of book 2???.... ves I was but then I heard book 3 was comind out and was excited for it KNEEL BEFORE ME This is actuallv the prequel to book 1. This book follows Daphne who goes through 'training with the help of a Basilisk named Kronos to help her win the affections of the towns prince If vou have read the first two books then you know the premise of this series, if not i say please read them they are incredible. In KNEEL BEFORE ME Daphne meets Kronos. her Basilisk who will train her fir the prince - only Daphne doesn't want anvthing to do with the competition or the prince but she eventually comes around to it after meeting the prince and making an agreement with him Kronos has never had come across any woman as stubborn as Daphne, she wants nothing to do with the trainina or him. Kronos and Daphne make a deal that will benefit both of them, just as Daphne makes a deal with the prince. I will sav after reading the first 2 books I was intriqued to know what would happen next, so getting a prequel that explains the back storv of the original characters from the first two books was exciting for me

I really enjoyed this. My only real complaint is that at times it felt a little too similar to KotB, but I still had such a good time reading it. I really loved how Lindsay tied up all the little bits and pieces from the first two books and brought everything together.
I also loved the flash forward at the end. Coming back to the present with Tem was a nice way to tie things off.
One thing I especially loved was seeing the contrast between Leo and his dad. Leo actually wanted to be better and tried to change, while Max let his ego consume him and became the absolutely horrid man he is today. And speaking of characters I dislike…
I dislike Caspen even more now. 🤣 #TeamLeoForever
I still absolutely love Apollo, obviously.
The Claw V2🤣 Broken Pelvis V2!!?? Kronos? Quite the man… I mean X2 👀👀👀👀
And that ending was CHAOS.
Bastian is such a spineless little weasel of a man.
Honestly, now that I know all the backstory and how everything fits together, I kind of want to go back and reread the whole series and see everything with fresh eyes.
I can’t believe I’m writing this but I nearly DNF’d this so many times 😩🫣 absolutely love book 1 & 2 both of these were easy 5* for me but I think at the cost to this book.
The MAIN reason for this was I had no excitement to read the story because I already knew what was coming. The two love interested, who she ultimately chooses, how his fate turns out, the trials, the bloodletting etc. I
Also this might be an unpopular opinion here but I HATE Daphne. She was leading on Maximus to the point where I was getting angry with her hot and cold. Poor Kronos couldn’t catch a break, no other MFC has angered me as much as Daphne did 🫠
This also made me feel so sorry for Caspen. All he has even know is sharing the love and attention of his partner and it made me realise this more in this book than any of the others. I’m praying there is another book coming with more from Tem, Leo, Apollo, Kronos
These books will never not be absolute chaos and I'm here for it!
Being a prequel, you know what's going to happen, but that does not stop the pain. I really enjoyed the extra context thats added to the Basilisk kingdom and the dynamics between people and families. Also how the human royals behave and how we got into the situation from book 1. Daphne is certain she is incapable of love when she is forced to compete for the princes hand, a task she has no interest in. Kronos... That Basilisk is such a green flag, the sweetest person in this book. The contrast between him and Maximus is subtle at first but as it develops, so does the horror. Also the parallels between Daphnes story and her daughter's is well developed and incredibly sad. I love these books, don't go into them expecting masterpieces but expect not to be able to put them down Serpent summer is back.
4.25! ⭐️ Oxford Lemon aka Lindsay Straube I love your big beautiful brain. Fans of Kiss of the Basilisk will eat this up. Just as many wacky scenarios that make you think, “I’m the first of my bloodline to read this sentence.” And despite the fact that it’s a 5 on the chili pepper scale it’s still somehow a slow burn?! I enjoyed this way more than Between Two Kings and found this story to be a bit less chaotic. The parallels were interesting to see between Daphne and Tem’s stories and how they diverged later on. If you’ve never read KOTB, I might encourage the reading order of KOTB > Kneel Before Me > BTK. However for any re reads I’d definitely start with kneel before me. I do not think this could be enjoyed as a standalone because that ending!!! 🫣
Thank you Edelweiss + Sourcebooks for the arc. Kneel before me is out September 2026!
This prequel was a great insight not only into a young Caspen, but also into Tem and Leo's parents! What a ride it was, even though we know how the story ends, it was so interesting to see different facets of the characters we already know. Not only to see how different they can be the versions we know, but also what leads up to them being those versions!
Also I see what you're trying to do Lindsay, but you can never make me hate him 😂
Daddy Kronos is definitely my favourite though, the way he cares for Daphne 😩 He's twice the basilisk than any of the others, IYKYK 👀 Oh how I would let him 'train' me anytime 🥵
I had a fun time with this one even if I knew how it would end 😢
ARC review 3.5 stars There is defiently more story and substenance in this book that the first 2. I did love that we got to see Tem's mother's story and how the first hybreed came to be, but did find it a bit repetitive but guess that is due to them both living through the same competition. Was excited to see an extra bonus chapter but just seems to be a repeat of Leo's POV of meeting Tem so a bit of a let down.
105 kindle notes from one single book. I am a changed woman once more. Kneel Before Me is the tamest one in the series but don't think that means that the spice is lacking because it still hits and it hits good, this one comes with extreme levels of yearning and tension that pays off really well and it adds so much context and world building to the events in Kiss of the Basilisk & Between Two Kings.
Somehow, even thouh I knew what happens to these characters, it didn't hurt any less actually reading how it plays out. I can't believe Lindsay made me like not only Maximus but Crispy Caspen aswell?? this woman's talents know no bounds.
Apollo my sweet precious baby, I wish we saw more of you (Im still holding out hope he gets his own spicy novella) and a Damon mention ?? Praise be!!
KRONOS SHOULD HAVE BEEN KING AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL
