If your mother died in cold blood, what would you do?
Sylvia Swan knows her mother's deather was no accidental robbery. The clues are there but she just can't put the pieces together. And her dad? He's the biggest suspect of them all. He demands an immediate move, saving the house is too much to bear. She knows her dad is lying, guilt seeps out of his pores, clawing at the little sanity she has left.
Her new life at Grimwood Academy doesn't ease her nerves. When Kian Grimm notices Sylvia's broken soul from a mile away, he becomes obsessed. He haunts her, claims her, hurts her.
Will Sylvia find out who killed her mother or will she find that the past is best left buried, and drown in Kian's sadistic torture?
i genuinely believe this will be a favorite for me for a very, very long time. the dark and lyrical way this book was written was so beautiful, i couldn’t help but highlight almost every page.
this is a story about loss, about grief so gut wrenching and controlling it leaves you with little choice but to drown in it.
sylvia is such a beautifully complex character and i found myself relating to her so deeply, it was shocking at times. the way she never gave up on finding out the truth was so inspiring and i love her deeply.
kian is perfect and i will take no other opinions, thank you. the way he so clearly cares for sylvia while trying to make it seem like he doesn’t, UGH. PERFECTION.
can we talk about the fact that the cat has his own pov? because hello? it was the cutest thing ever and i love him so much. 😭 alistair is such a cutie pie, he’s the friend that sylvia always needed and i love that they found each other.
i cannot wait to see what comes from this author in the future. thank you so so much for allowing me to read this beautiful story early. 🖤🦢
Thanks to Erykah Flores for this eARC! Here is my honest review.
Swan, Secrets, and a Cat Who Sees It All
‘Lost Swan’ is a quiet, atmospheric story that leans heavily on emotion rather than action. From the very first pages, the writing feels soft and almost dreamlike, pulling the reader into Swan’s inner world. Themes of loss, identity, and healing are woven throughout the story, giving it a melancholic undertone that lingers after finishing the book.
Swan herself is a compelling protagonist. Her emotional struggles feel genuine and relatable, even when the story slows down. At times, the pacing is quite gentle, especially in the middle, which slightly weakens the tension. Some plot developments are also fairly predictable, making the story feel more familiar than surprising.
What truly stood out was the perspective of the cat. Seeing parts of the story through the cat’s eyes added an extra layer to the narrative and gave the story more depth. These moments offered a different way of observing Swan and her emotions, enriching the overall reading experience.
Overall, ‘Lost Swan’ is a beautifully written, introspective read. It may not be for readers looking for fast-paced fantasy, but for those who enjoy emotional depth, symbolism, and thoughtful storytelling, this book is well worth the journey.
“And for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m breaking”
I’m sobbing! I LOVED this book, this tragically beautiful dark love story.
There was mystery, there was trauma, there was pure obsession, there was HEALING. I’m so grateful and honored that I was given the chance to read this beautiful story early!
"To imagine a life without you is to imagine a body persisting after the heart has been removed"
Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read this book. I loved the mystery plot and I loved the atmosphere the author built through language and imagery. It did paint quite the gothic vibe in my mind which I loved. It was beautifully written touching upon themes of loss, trauma, grief and healing which many of us can resonate with. It's definitely a book that relies on atmosphere, tone and emotions of which the author did exceptionally! It was beautiful and poetic. I know it was only a shorter book, but I really really wish it was a little longer for a couple reasons; to have the backstory of the cult in greater detail and to also have more depth and character building for their relationships and connections. Sylvia on her own, is a fantastic character with indivuality and headstrong into seeking the truth and justice. Kian on his own, is a layered and complex character who, despite being a little bit of a bully, a stalker and morally grey, is not an inherently bad guy. I have no doubt that Kian loved Sylvia and vice versa, but I feel like the contrast from her being his subject and him being her stalker/bully to them developing into more, was a bit fast. This could've been more down to the fact that it was a shorter book though. This was my first book by this author and considering she loves to write gothic romance, it definitely will not be my last. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I ADORED the fact that Amos had MULTIPLE chapters in his pov, and his loyalty, guardianship and protectiveness over Sylvia was so good and unique to read.
Also would've liked to see more of Alistair, especially after what happened, happened and more of their friendship bond too. It was a very enjoyable read!
I got to read this as an ARC copy. This started right with a playlist, which is something I adore when it comes to books. Usually, I know more than one song on the list. Though for me, these are also a way to learn music.
I'm truly happy to have been able to ARC read for this amazing book.
The book is a dark gothic romance, slow burn with lots of mystery and suspense. The book is a masterpiece. The characters and their development are amazing. Though for me, I never really liked Alastair. I kept thinking something was off about him, and that was the only disappointing part of the book for me. I like Sylvia and Kian's romance, and I adore Amos so much.
Something that Lost Swan does that most books don't do... she gives Amos' POV. Amos is Sylvia's cat, and I found it odd at first, but I grew to love each chapter told from Amos' POV. It is a rarity but still very much a truly interesting insite to the story.
I wish the story were longer, but for the length it was, it was amazing. Full of different types of suspense as Sylvia engages in her mystery-solving of her mother's murder.
There is some spice, but it is not overly present in the book. Tasteful spice.
Lost Swan is an amazing read that pulled me in from the very first chapter. The story balances mystery, tension, and dark academia vibes in a way that keeps you absolutely hooked. I was questioning who can be trusted at some points and so glad my guess was wrong.
While this book isn’t super heavy on spice, the chemistry between the characters is undeniable and incredibly well written. Every interaction feels intentional with layers of emotional depth, and feels like a real life scenario which made the relationships feel real rather than rushed or super forced and fake. The plot itself is compelling and thoughtfully written, with twists that make you second guess a couple characters along the way.
One of my absolute favorite aspects of the book was the inclusion of Amos’s perspective (Sylvia’s cat). It was such a unique and refreshing narrative choice, and surprisingly emotional. Those moments added depth, and a different lens through which to view the story being told.
Overall, Lost Swan isn’t just a dark mystery, it’s a well crafted story that keeps you thinking long after you’ve turned the final page. Between the strong writing, intriguing plot, and complex characters, this book is a standout and absolutely worth the read. I give it all the stars & maybe one chili pepper 🌶️
This book truly had such a Gothic feel to it, I loved it!! I don't know how she did it. It starts out with tragedy and trauma, adds a dose of friendship, stalking, obsession, mystery, and healing. For a while, I really didn't know what to think of Alistair, trying to figure out if he was really just a good friend, a romantic interest, or a bad guy in disguise. It's a SLOWWW burn. Kian is such a jerk at the beginning, but the intrigue is always there, and before you know it you're rooting for him (and maybe questioning yourself lol)
"To imagine a life without you is to imagine a body persisting after the heart has been removed.”
Amos is the actual cutest. When I realize there are chapters from the cats perspective I was just delighted, it added that extra bit of quirky charm. Sylvia beats to her own drum and I loved it. The grief she experiences and expresses is palpable and heartbreaking, but still she persists, and let's just say, it pays off.
"and for the first time, I don't feel like I’m breaking."
I honestly wish it was longer so I could stay with the characters a bit more! Thank you to the author for allowing me to read and review, it was a joy.
I was lucky enough to be a ARC reader for Lost Swan, I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters in this book.
Sylvia was struggling through the grief of her mother who passed away and Sylvia was set on avenging her death.
Sylvia found herself a wonderful friend in Alistair at a time of need who supported her throughout the book.
Kians obsession with Sylvia started instantly and continued to grown throughout the book, his willingness to protect her even from afar was beyond romantic in his own way.
I throughly enjoyed having (Cat) Amos POV it brought to life a character who’s constantly in each chapter, his support to Sylvia though out was definitely needed to help keep her grounded and present.
The book is a slow burn building on both the main characters as the book goes on, Sylvia’s interest in Kian grows and develops into more complex feelings.
This book has definitely become one of my favourites and I will re reading it again, I enjoyed the way it was written, the growth though out the book not to mention character growth that took me on a journey of emotions.
FLORES, my girl! I’ve been reading and following along with this author since her first book, and each story has captivated me and left a lasting impression on my soul.
However, this book was different. In Lost Swan, we witness an emotional side of ED Flores and her writing. We delve into her depth and emotional grief. Although this was one of her less intense books, it still kept me on the edge of my seat, craving more and wishing I had a Kian in my life! He embodies the perfect transformation from an enemy to the ultimate lover.
Can I also just sprinkle on the best part of this entire book? Special chapters dedicated to the sweetest and most perfect protector, Amos the cat. 🐈⬛
Lost Swan was poetic and darkly beautiful. I absolutely adored everything about this old-fashioned gothic gem.
ARC Reader here! This book was amazing and emotionally devastating in the best ways. The only gothic anything that I’d ever read was southern gothic, so I didn’t fully know what to expect. There was mystery, grief, healing, and obsession. Everything came together so perfectly. Kian? Love him. Sylvia? Adore her. Alistair was great. I loved the side character too. We even got Amos the cat’s POV, which I’d never seen in a book before, but oddly it gave more depth to the story. We were seeing things as the characters did, and because of that, everything felt so raw and unfiltered. The characters, even when they tried, were all so unpolished. As a reader, and a writer, I know it can be hard wanting the characters to be perfect, but the characters were flawed and it made them more perfect, more real. I’ve got another author to add to my list of favorites and a new genre to explore!
Thank you to the author for this early copy. This was an emotional romance book. Sylvia moves to a new town with her father after her mother's death, only Sylvia knows her mother's death was no robbery gone wrong and she suspects her dad knows something due to the quick move afterwards. Her life in the new town isn't made easy either, there she runs into Kian Grimm. Kian notices her broken soul and instantly becomes a problem, but Kian is also obsessed with Sylvia. Sylvia is determined to figure out what exactly happened to her mother. This book contains mystery, healing from trauma, and a bit of romance all mixed together.
ARC REVIEW ✨ Thank you to the author for this early copy
This story was so beautiful and tragic all at the same time. From the very first page you get hooked in finding out the truth and the whys. The whole way through it’s like being in a new version of a black and white mystery film.
Not only was there a mystery to solve but trauma to heal from, including the dark start to end obsession that was was all consuming .
Thank you to E.D. Flores for the opportunity to be a part of your writing journey with this advanced copy.
Full review to come, but if you like God of Malice meets Anathema meets Gothikana welcome to Grimmwood Academy of Arts. Follow along as Kian Grumm and his Little Swan, Sylvia Swan, battle their obsessions and solve her mother's murder.
I enjoy books like this because umm hello who doesn’t.
Let’s just say you think you know what’s gonna happen but you really don’t but we def need book 2 ok? Like I was in a little chokehold here and I’m all for it
Lost Swan is an alluring read full of macabre gothic essence balanced perfectly with an elite academy setting. A shy but determined FMC who becomes the reluctant obsession of the resident bully MMC creates undeniable tension and longing as Sylvia fends off Kian to solve the mystery of her mother’s death.
If you love enemies to lovers, dubcon/noncon, solving mysteries, and secret society/cult vibes, you’ll love Lost Swan!!🖤🦢
