Wally finds himself pulled into the mysterious dimension that Barry was trying to access. But how can he escape and make it back to Fort Fox and save his father?
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name
Jeff Lemire is a New York Times bestselling and award winning author, and creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder, Trillium, Plutona, Black Hammer, Descender, Royal City, and Gideon Falls. His upcoming projects include a host of series and original graphic novels, including the fantasy series Ascender with Dustin Nguyen.
So Wally is trapped in the Speed Force with Barry and others like them, including Thawne Sr, who is seemingly a monster now. Apparently, Wally isn't like Barry and has somehow retained his corporeal form, which gives him the option to go home. Lots of timey-wimey stuff as Wally passes himself talking to people in the future, so all that's left to see is how those conversations (or snipits of conversation) pan out once he's out.
Meanwhile, the Rogues (minus Trickster) work feverishly to save Wally's father. Lots of drama there! <--especially with Lisa
For me, this title is getting better and better. Recommended.
A very strong issue all the way through. Wally learns a lot and then that final page hits hard. This series has picked up recently. Enjoying it's current direction a lot.
Some really cool stuff about the mythos behind this universe’s speed force. Flish joins Grodd as another incredible invention from Lemire and Robles! This one has been a slower burn - but like Absolute Green Lantern - it’s really starting to gain steam and expanding its scope. Both of those books are filling out the details of the networks of bad guys in this universe, too.
Update: This review was edited in light of some valid feedback on Feb 4th to highlight I am reviewing comics as "walk in" reads.
In 2026, I'm trying to get back into American comics (mostly superhero) by reading at least one comic on the week of release to see if they still work in this format or if they are meant as trade collections. How easy is it to pick up a random comic and find something to enjoy without needing to research back issues and the current era of shared universe events?
Absolute Batman was my first read for Jan 28 and as there are several absolute titles released this week, I thought I'd try them all.
I realise this is issue 11 but Absolute Batman and Superman both worked for new readers at issue 16. So the review is of the single issue in isolation - it may have been considerably higher if I'd had the time/means to read the previous 10 issues.
I'm afraid I wasn't impressed with this issue beyond the strong artwork which had some strong character designs and reimaginings.
The issue wasn't very accessible despite being part 1 of a 2 part story and it felt like it was a continuation of a larger story. Connected to this problem was the pacing which felt very slow and had a lot of scenes of characters standing and talking. This is particularly problematic with "The Flash" where I expect the story to be kinetic and fast-paced. This only seemed to occur in the scenes involving the Rogues and not the Flash.
My final criticism is more reserved for long term readers/publishers of the Flash. It may be a sampling error of the issue I dropped in on but I didn't get the sense of anything new happening here in terms of Flash lore and some of it reminded me more of the recent Si Spurrier run. It just feels less bold for the "Absolute" brand and I thought it would work just as well in the regular continuity (barring some regular continuity character deaths). Maybe there's more that distinguishes the title than I noticed in this issue but it pales in comparison to the changes seen in the Absolute Batman and Superman titles.
There's maybe more to enjoy here for people wanting to read a Flash story that's self-contained and doesn't know of other "runs" on the title. Maybe the slower pacing will work better in a 6-12 issue trade collection as I know Lemire usually does good character work. What I saw of the artwork was impressive and I'd like to see them given more action to depict.
Overall 2/5 Writing 2/5 Art 4/5 Will I read the next issue? No Did I need to read previous issues/series? Yes Will I read previous issues? Not at the moment but possibly a trade collection of the first 12 issues if I hear good things elsewhere about this run.
Forgive me for saying this for a flash comic but…that was fast, lol. Out of everything so far it feels like this is the storyline that shouldn’t be two parts, but hey I still had a great time even though it only feels like we got portions of the story to be filled in through the next issue. Leaving off from the last issue, we find Wally inside the other world where the images of Barry Allen and a few other alien creatures appear to Wally. Barry describes this place as the still point, a sort of eye of a never ending story. The red energy around them, which Barry and the others are now made of, is where Wally’s power comes from. It’s basically the speed force and the are at the center of it. But the thing is, Wally may be connected to it…Barry is apart of it, alongside the other alien creatures Wally sees walking around. They are all scientists from their own dimensions who didn’t survive the journey into this world. Their bodies were destroyed she. They opened the portal and now their memories exist in this space. They are trapped here but Wally is special and still very much alive…but he can’t stay here.
And of close the reason he can’t stay here is what popped out of the still point when Wally went inside, the large grotesque figure that was once Eobard Thawne, brought back from the brink by his granddaughter. But it seems like nothing is truly left of him other than a large monster of pure destruction. Even trickster, who betrayed everyone, realizes how bad this situation is and suddenly everyone shifts from fighting to either escape or work on the tech to send that thing back before it destroys all of it. The rogues are currently making their way through the complex, using digger’s boomerangs to map their way ahead and find out what everyone is running from. Eobard started as a not so solid form but has soon become physical. A giant dark creature with lighting bolt horns and a black void in the center which seems to either draw energy into it or send out speed force energy on a whim. At this point trickster and Elanore are fully willing to send that thing back but they don’t have much time…enter the rest of the rogues to give them time and provide a distraction to draw the monster away.
Back in the still point, Barry is giving Wally the grand tour. Over there is Jay Garrick’s body, he entered and survived the passage with Eobard but instead of giving into the world he gave up and allowed himself to die after being trapped here for a very long time. RIP JAY. On the other hand, Eobard gave into the world. Specially he gave into a part of the world where there is a deep dark pit of just void energy that ate away into Eobard’s mind and the Ed him into the monster we know today. At the moment Barry and the other alien professors are working through the theoretical nature of this world, they haven’t solved it yet but when they do they promise to send Wally home. But there is a certain risk here, they haven’t even cracked their own languages to be able to properly work together and depending on how long it takes…Wally may end up like like Jay or Eoboard.
Back at fort Fox, the guys guarding Wally’s father are ready to leave as well. As such, after much pushing from Rudy, they cut him loose. This allows him to run over and join the rest of the rogues, at the least allowing them to accomplish that part of the mission. Barry’s tech is not as complicated as the rogue tech, but that still doesn’t make Jesse a miracle worker as they need time, and at the moment golden glider, against Leonard’s orders, thinks she can give Jesse that time. Lisa rushes in right at the Eobard monster and in the process gets caught up in the dark energy at its core. She desperately tries to flow back to the rest of the rogues but can feel her leg tech being stripped away. Suddenly she drops to the ground as Jesse turns on Barry’s portal and cracks it open. A beam goes across the room and suddenly Wally is back in the main world, fully ready to dish it own with Thawne. PHEW, at least he didn’t have to wait for Barry to figure out how to open the portal from the other side, lol.

I think it's really funny how Absolute universe does a far better job of expanding and showing it's version of Speed force than the main DC universe does with Speed force, I've read hundreds of Flash books from eighties to now and we barely explored what Speed force is... and maybe it's a weird thing to have a hope for some sort of Elenore Thawne after this but I really hope she changes for better after this arc somehow. Most of the people are Saying Absolute flash is weakest Absolute title and honestly I don't see it, it's pretty intriguing and interesting and understands what flash is.
I thoroughly enjoyed issues 9-11 of Absolute Flash! I love Wally and Grodd, and their journey is really picking up! It has turned out to be such an emotional coming-of-age story 🥹. The panels are super exciting, and I love where the story is going. Some people will find this story too 'simple' but it's home to me. Sweet Wally with his red mullet and freckles is learning how to direct his absolute speed. And I swear to Grodd this is my favorite Flash!😍🧡💜
We get some lore, but it still feels... almost like nothing is happening because everything gets resolved so quickly. I do still like the direction of this series, but I'd love for the issue to have some more meat to them.
I find the Still Point to be a poor substitute for the Still Force. To be honest, I was happy when it seemed like there was no mystical explanation for the super speed at all. That made it really stand out from the mainline Flash stories.
Estoy disfrutando mucho de la dupla Lemire-Morales. Me ha encantado el encuentro Barry-Wally.Y mención aparte, el arte y el juego de colores en cada número. Estoy muy dentro del universo absolute
This series just gets better and better, so excited for the conclusion next issue. Hopefully the kid completes his metamorphosis into the hero we know the Flash can be.
