A hunted stormbearer. A fire-forged fugitive. A kingdom willing to burn them both.
Stormforged is an epic fantasy romance filled with forbidden magic, slow-burn tension, and a rebellion against a ruthless king.
Rylexa has spent years running—hunted for the lightning burning in her blood, a power born from a king’s failed attempt to become a god. When her escape collides with Torin, a fire-gifted fugitive whose defiance is as dangerous as his flames, survival becomes a dangerous alliance neither of them planned.
As the king tears his kingdom apart to hunt the Gifted and reclaim the power he lost, Rylexa and Torin are forced into a choice that could cost them everything.
Because some powers demand more than loyalty—and some bonds are forged to be tested.
You know those rare books that don't just feel like a story you’re reading, but a place where you belong? That is exactly what Stormforged by Jessica Stiles did to me. I went into this expecting epic fantasy, high stakes, and cool magic. I came out of it feeling like I just spent months in the trenches with people who have now permanently taken up residence in my heart.
Jessica has mastered the art of pacing, atmospheric world-building, and high-stakes tension. But what everyone keeps coming back to (and what absolutely wrecked me) is the character work.
Let’s talk about the found family trope, because while a lot of books try to do it, Stormforged completely redefines it. This isn't just a ragtag group of people who happen to be in the same room. This is a soul-deep, fiercely protective, "I would burn the world down for you" kind of bond. As a reader, you don't just watch them grow closer; you feel like you are pulling up a chair to their campfire. You become the quiet, extra member of their crew. When they hurt, I ached. When they laughed, I was smiling at my pages like a lunatic. I didn't just read about a found family, I felt like I found my own family within these pages.
And our FMC? Good grief. Talk about an absolute masterclass in character development.
Many fantasy authors fall into the trap of giving their FMC overnight confidence shifts or unearned powers. Not Rylexa. Our girl is put through the absolute psychological and physical ringer, and every single ounce of her growth is deeply, painfully earned.
Guarded, fractured, and surviving on pure instinct. >>>> A powerhouse of resilience, stepping into her own agency. Fearing the storm within her.>>>> Becoming the storm.
Watching her evolve was nothing short of insane. She is allowed to be messy, to make wrong choices, to bleed, and to fail. Because of that, when she finally stands tall, you want to stand up and cheer for her. Her strength isn't just in her magic or her swordplay; it’s in her vulnerability and her willingness to let people in after being broken.
If you love rich, atmospheric fantasy where the plot is driven by deeply human, beautifully flawed characters, stop what you are doing and read this immediately. Jessica has written a masterpiece of resilience, love, and survival.
I am left with a massive book hangover, an empty space in my chest, and an desperate need for book 2.
"We don't choose the blood that makes us, but we choose the shields that guard our backs." (Yeah, that line is going to live rent-free in my head forever).
Highly recommended for fans of: Slow-burn character arcs, high-stakes elemental magic, and tears. Lots of tears.
Extremely fast-paced, pulls you into the FMC trying to escape imprisonment, and doesnt give you nuch time to breathe after that.
Turns to escaping and discovering a new found family very quickly, which may throw the reader off, but stick with it.
The main premise of the story is a group fighting back against a stronghold that uses people to gain power, keeping a specific of people in chains. Very strong characters throughout. I grew to love them and their time together. Gave Robin Hood vibes ✨️
The romance is a subplot, this story is very quest/journey oriented so if you're looking for more of a romantasy, this isnt it.
Immersive read with audio, and the sound was a bit echoed. The narrator kept up with the pacing, and did OK switching up the tone for different characters, but I think it could have been a bit more distinct for those not following along in the book.
The last 100 pages or so had me invested. Things start to progress, and we see a shift in the characters that I dont want to spoil.
Definitely continuing in the series.
Favorite quotes: "Surviving isn't the same as living."
Stormforged is beautiful, but not in a glittering, polished fantasy kind of way. It’s beautiful in the raw and ugly sense. It’s gritty and visceral, with a world that feels lived in rather than romanticized.
These characters are thrown into circumstances that feel impossible, and so much of this story is about watching them find their strength within those circumstances. There’s desperation, exhaustion, fear and loss, but also loyalty, hope, resilience and rebellion. Nothing about their journey feels shiny or easy, and that’s part of what made it so powerful. By the end of chapter 60, I had tears in my eyes.
The ending was exactly what I want from the first book in a series. It gives the characters and this part of their journey a meaningful conclusion without pretending the larger story is finished. It isn’t a painful cliffhanger designed to leave you hanging. Instead, it leaves the door wide open to a much bigger story and makes you genuinely want to follow these characters through whatever comes next.
This book took me much longer to finish than it normally would, but that had absolutely nothing to do with the story itself. Every time I came back to it, I was reminded how much I enjoyed being in this world.
Five stars for me means I would read a book again, and I would absolutely return to Stormforged. I already know this is a world I’ll want to step back into.
I was not sure what to expect from this book as I went into it completely blind and just the cover had called to me! I would describe it as a Dystopian High Fantasy. The world is hard and unforgiving for those with and without powers... everyone seems to be affected by the current king's reign. The entire story you are moving through this world...getting caught, fighting back, meeting someone new...repeat. It took me until the last 20% of the book to feel really invested in the main characters. If you are good with an extremely slow burn romance, then you will enjoy this book...if you are looking for spice- move along. It's more of a found family adventure book. There are politics in the last 20% or so which I always love. The end felt like it just abruptly stopped. I'm pretty sure that this was on purpose...it just kinda threw me. I will read book 2 just not right away. I'm curious to see the direction of the story considering what happened in the end.
Absolutely amazing book. What a ride, the writing is so different as seen from typical fantasy books. Keep me up and on the edge of my seat. I could not put it down! Highly recommend if you are tired of the typical fantasy books!!!
The concept of this book is sound. But I have a pet peeve. Rylexa can wield lighting… she can take out a number of enemies at once. But the writing does not reflect the nature of lighting. At least to my knowledge. In so many fantasy books these powerful magic weilders are the under dogs and it doesn’t jive. I will not be continuing this series.
