Oriental dance, known in Spain as "Danza del Vientre," is also called "Oriental Dance" or "Arabic Dance." In the United States and English-speaking countries, it's known as "Belly Dance," while in Egypt it's called "Raqs Sharqui." Like all arts and dance forms, this is a discipline that has evolved from its ancient origins to the present day. In its countries of origin, the dance experienced many ups and downs due to the rise of fundamentalist interpretations of Islam, but it has now regained much of its prestige. Today, there are even government-subsidized dance companies supported by cultural ministries that tour the world's most prestigious stages and appear on television shows. This dance has truly become universal—a treasured part of the heritage of all cultures.
