What if a ten-day war became a four-year catastrophe that broke a superpower? On February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin launched what he believed would be a swift "special military operation" to topple Ukraine's government. The Anatomy of a Strategic CatastrophePutin's The Miscalculation That Broke Russia reveals how catastrophic miscalculations transformed Putin's quick victory into Russia's comprehensive breaking. Solid book and piece of journalism. I fundemaentally agree with the core argument, I think the author convingly showed that the 2022 invasion fo Ukraine was a catastrophic blunder by Putin and Russia, and that Russia will for decades be feeling the consequences of this. I do feel that the book underplays Putins political skill a little; yes Ukraine was a massive blunder, but the fact Putin is still in power at all despite that I think does show his skills as political operator.
Overall, definitely read this if you want a thorough and convinging analysis of Russia's disasterous invasion attempt.
