The Adventurous Duke: A Victorian Era Historical Romance Novel

Rate this book
"This is freedom. Real freedom. Not the illusion we have in England—trapped by expectations."

For seven years, George Hamilton, heir to the Dukedom of Abercorn, ran from duty and found freedom in the American wilderness. Then he met Clara—the half-Native American, half-English healer with gentle hands and a fierce spirit who saved his life and taught him what it meant to truly live.

For three years, they built something a marriage of equals, far from society's judgment. A home carved from wild land. A love that needed no titles or expectations to thrive.

But when his father dies, George must return to London to secure his brother's inheritance. And Clara, despite every instinct warning her away, follows the man she loves into a world that will never accept her.

London is merciless.

Beautiful, intelligent, and too different to be forgiven, Clara becomes a target for society's cruelty. What begins as whispered insults escalates into public humiliation. Newspaper caricatures depicting her as a savage. Doors slammed in her face. Ladies who smile while spreading poison.

George's family rallies around them, but will it be enough? Powerful forces are working against them, and as the attacks turn calculated and personal, Clara watches helplessly as London strips away everything she is—her confidence, her dignity, her hope. George fights to protect her, but how do you shield someone from a thousand cuts?

She survives the cruelty. She endures the humiliation. But she cannot endure forever.

Finally, Clara realizes she has only two keep fighting for a place in a world that will never want her, or return to the wilderness that was always her true home. The choice should be simple. Except choosing herself means losing George.

Some love stories are about finding each other. This one is about choosing each other when the entire world demands you let go.

Abigail Adams

Abigail Adams was the wife and closest advisor of John Adams, the second president of the United States, and the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States. She was a founder of the United States, and was both the first second lady and second first lady of the United States, although such titles were not used at the time. She and Barbara Bush are the only two women in American history who were both married to a U.S. president and the mother of a U.S. president.
Adams's life is one of the most documented of the first ladies; many of the letters she wrote to her husband John Adams while he was in Philadelphia as a delegate in the Continental Congress prior and during the American Revolution document the closeness and versatility of their relationship. John Adams frequently sought the advice of Abigail on many matters, and their letters are filled with intellectual discussions on government and politics. Her letters also serve as eyewitness accounts of the American Revolutionary War home front.
Surveys of historians conducted periodically by the Siena College Research Institute since 1982 have consistently found Adams to rank as one of the three most highly regarded first ladies by historians.

Extremely well written, full of drama, sadness, love, family, adventure, emotions, society and mystery. Clara is a native American living with her family on the western frontier. Her father is English, her mother mother is Indian and that makes her unacceptable by both cultures. George is an English Lord who is to be the next Duke but he doesn't want it. He just wants to explore and be himself. While being himself he is bitten by a snake and Clara finds him. She takes him back to her tipi and with her mother's help they save him. Clara and George fall in love but he sees the news that his father has died and he has to return to England to help his brother. After seven years, George shows up and Clara is exposed to the hate that the English have for the Americans and Indians. Strange things start to happen to Clara and George needs to figure it out. His brother, Robert helps along with his mother, Catherine and his Aunt Augusta but someone is hurting Clara. Great storyline and the characters are fantastic. Would recommend this story for everyone.

Feeling overwhelmed by the weight of expectations placed upon him, George made a decision that would completely change the course of his life. I empathized with the protagonists but was a little worried by Clara's drastic reaction. I was astonished by the role of the villains and how someone can inflict so much harm while hiding behind a sense of duty. The web of intrigue was impressive, as were the consequences of the decisions made and how they affected the protagonists. I was thoroughly entertained by the plot development, the descriptions that captured my attention, and the rationalization of the controversial situation in which the protagonists found themselves. I even found myself searching for alternative ways to handle the problem. Adventure, deep emotions, intrigue, courage, betrayal, romance, and passion—this story had it all. I greatly appreciated the emotional conclusion. I voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received from Hidden Gems.

I was given a free copy of this book and I decided to give it an honest review.
This novel is competently and often engagingly written, with characters that feel distinct and easy to invest in. The Abigail Adams clearly understands how to build personalities that draw the reader in, and for much of the story, that strength carries the narrative forward. However, I believe the portrayal of the Clara falls short of the toughness the story seems to promise. Her response to harassment feels underdeveloped and unconvincing. Especially when framed as formative or extreme, given that comparable or worse experiences are common even in everyday settings like high school. This disconnect makes it difficult to fully accept her characterization as resilient or hardened. I found the ending to be logically consistent with the rest of the story, but to me is felt unsatisfying.

The Adventurous Duke (Book 3)

The story of Clara and George is truly beautiful and refreshingly unique. It isn’t a typical, cookie-cutter historical romance—instead, it feels thoughtful, layered, and deeply human. I appreciated how the author handled the differences in their cultures with honesty and care, making their relationship feel genuine and believable rather than forced. Those contrasts added depth to both the characters and the storyline. The intrigue woven throughout the plot kept things interesting and gave the story a compelling momentum.

This third book in The Rebellious Lords series was a powerful, gripping, extremely well written, and unique forbidden historical romance. It was full of drama adventure, societal and family expectations, mystery, intrigue, betrayal, emotional issues, and twists, and fantastic characters were very engaging. Their passionate and strong love was heartwarming. The ending was wonderful. I highly recommend reading!

This story is full of emotion as one reads about the cruelty of humans to one that is not their own kind. I liked how the family stood behind the couple as they faced the ton. The FMC has a lot of courage going to England with the MMC, who doesn’t want his title. The storyline kept my interest.
