He Use To Be Nice: An Unhinged Romance

Rate this book
Love will make you feel safe…
right before it breaks you down.

I thought I had it all figured out.
Junky was my day one.
My rider.
My soulmate.

Yeah, I know Junky is a wild nickname.
But trust me, he is more than you would imagine.

The one man I swore would never cross me.

But I learned quick.
Some people only love you when it benefits them.

And when the betrayal came
Yep, he did it.
And yep, I left.

Now I cannot even stand the sight of him.

They say time heals everything.
But the past always finds its way back.

Mine came loud.
A man who does not know how to let go.
A man who does not forgive.
A man who loves hard and breaks harder.

No matter how I move
I cannot win.

Or so they think.

Because what they do not know is this
I am determined too.

And soon I will find out who is really on my side…
and who is about to wish they were.

A standalone African American romance with an unhinged male lead, a second-chance love built on betrayal, family secrets that refuse to stay buried, and loyalty tested against Los Angeles street justice.
No cliffhanger.

This book is horrible. First the blurb lies. That isn't truly what the book is about or about what happens. Second the book is mislabeled. This is not an Urban Romance it's a horror show. Third the writing and formatting is not on par for a product being sold. For example, conversation between characters is formatted like separate chapter or section for each character's dialogue paragraph. Third the book has situations unfold that aren't even close to logical. I'm reading fiction, yes but in the mechanics of life point of reading fiction is knowing that A to B will cause C. You don't get to just drop characterization randomly, nonsensical reactions to out WTFery, and then switch things back again whenever it suits you. That's just not how it works.

We have Junky (MMC) who is the absolute worst. That's kind of the point and then we have Foxy (FMC). By the the time we get to Foxy spreading a STD because she misreads an at home test I knew it was the end of the road for me. I flipped through some more pages afterwards to see if it got better. It didnt.

This was a wild ride😳 so definitely check your trigger warnings!

Once you get the “all clear”, prepare to have SEVERAL crash out moments as you read🥴.

Drama: ON 100😏
Plot: so many twists and turns- I can’t call it😩
Spice: spicy scenes did have spice🌶️
Had Foxy looking like "swiper no swiping" how they treated her throughout this book 🤣

So many moving parts and POV’s but I think the author did a really good job of keeping everything together.

I’m not from Los Angeles but I enjoyed the specific regional components the author included as well.

This is a standalone with no cliffhangers but I can definitely see the author exploring some of these characters more in future books.

If you like mess and unhinged behavior (like me), I think you’d definitely enjoy this read😉.

This book was so good and messy. Everybody except River had an issue with Foxy. That poor girl was taken through it. Junky was a terrible man and person. Even though he came in clutch in the end, it doesn't change the fact that he was a dirty dog. Kia was wrong for what she did, but she definitely gave Junky a dose of his own medicine. My favorite character was Chance. Even with his secret, he was the realest person in this book. I wouldn't mind a part 2 because Foxy needs her happily ever after.

Messy read

Foxy was up against a lot. Junky was a piece of work. Every one had motives ! No one was genuinely who they presented themselves to be. This was a messy time. Very drama filled. Chance was probably my favorite character. This is my first read by this author. I’m glad I gave her a chance.

i’m confused on all the good reviews i’m seeing because nothing about this book gave 4 or 5 stars. This book was all over the place & just pointless.

Sweet Pea Giiiiirrrrrllll!!!!

When I say I thoroughly enjoyed this book I mean it from the bottom of my heart. You wrote the hell out of this book honey. Foxy had a rough childhood and didn’t understand why. Being with a mother like her is bound to leave some long lasting scars. Meeting a man like Junky she thought she had it all however when he true colors start to surface she sees that’s far from the truth. Chance was always a good dude I never would’ve guessed what be did as a profession but it definitely worked out in his favor in the end. Junky was a dude who could never stay with just one woman and man did it backfire on him, I’m sure he learned a valuable lesson in the end. Elaine wasn’t ish to do what she did I guess she got her karma in the end. Faizon was just evil to me and it probably didn’t start out that but that’s how I was looking at him by the end. Finding out your mama had a hand in the way your life turned out is crazy esp when you always felt like something was missing. Chance finally found who he was looking for and I’m so happy for all parties involved. River was actually a good dude but was a casualty that shouldn’t have happened if ppl weren’t playing get back. This book had me on the verge of tears reading but it had me smiling at the end. Wanna know all that it entails pick up this five ⭐️ read by Sweet Peas and dive in ASAP

Started with a bang then fizzled

Might insinuate some spoilers

I was initially hooked by what I thought was the plot but it changed so many times. I applaud the author for trying to weave so many stories and POVs together. The main issues I had were the attempts to throw so much in caused a lot of contradictions and and muddied the story. Did Junky and Candie meet at a casino or biker's club? Did Foxy forget that quick what Faison looked like? Did all of this happen in a matter of a few weeks? How is everyone suddenly a student at the same college? This wasn't unhinged, it was entirely too much. Also, what made Candie flip and go crazy? Everything was too much and what I couldn't stand the most was how everyone had a bad feeling about something but kept ignoring it.

I went into this with an open mind as Urban is a new genre for me. And while I didn't hate it, I'm wondering did the ARC team really read the entire book. Alot of this could have been caught and fixed. There was soooo much potential. But there were so many characters there wasn't time to build any backstories in a way that the reader could build a rapport with. I can't say anything about who I liked, disliked etc it was just too much.

Whew!!

This was a good book. I felt so bad for Foxy. She was a good person that just couldn’t catch a break. A no good boyfriend that did her wrong, and framed her for murder. Kizzy was set out to hurt her because of her past history with Junky but felt bad and became her friend. I wish Foxy could’ve gotten her happily ever after with River because I believe his intentions were pure and he loved Foxy. Then Kia deranged tail who just couldn’t move on. Then you have Faizon’s psychotic self who lost his mind behind a woman, and an accident when Elaine was shot. Then she got kidnapped by Big Mike and then Faizon. But in the end she found her long lost siblings. That was very heartwarming although Tressa was set out to seek revenge on Foxy for her friend Kia. She had a change of heart after she got the dna results that revealed Foxy was her sister. I wish there was a part two.

Toxic Rollercoaster from beginning to the end

This is a multi pov book that is raw and real. Young girls growing up in the system and falling victim to the first person that smiles at them. You can honestly tell that the picture that everyone was trying to paint of Foxy wasn’t who she was at all. She was truly surviving and playing the cards that she was dealt. May a MF like Junky and Faizon NEVER FIND ME. If you looking for a cute lovey dovey story this ain’t it! It’s a bit fast paced, but at the end all the pieces come together.

Whew Chile!!! It’s a lot going on!

Foxy, Foxy, Foxy!!! My God, what a resilient woman 😭😭😭 everyone she came across in this book either did her dirty just to do her dirty, was hiding a secret from her or had a hidden agenda! Poor baby had NO CLUE!! She irritated me in the beginning but I was heartbroken for her by the end. Chance was my favorite character in this book. Even though he was double crossing Junky & Big Mike - they absolutely deserved it. This book is fast paced, messy and filled with drama and deception. Definitely a page turner!

He Use to be Nice
By Sweet Pea

This was my first book read of 2026!

Ba-by!!!! 5 STARS!! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Right off the bat this book got some serious stuff going on!!! I mean SERIOUS! This author has a great storyline and plot, the MMC is a Beast!! He had the right name too!!! JUNKY! and the FMC you just feel so much for her. Foxy just went through some things and when I say through I mean ALL THE WAY THROUGH!! I felt so much pain and empathy for her. This book keeps you engaged from beginning to end! Definitely worth reading. I highly recommend this one!! 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥

He Used to Be Nice by Sweet Pea was an overall okay read. The main plot and twist were interesting, but at times the story felt repetitive and confusing. The use of multiple points of view wasn’t necessarily a bad choice; however, it didn’t feel necessary for every character to have their own POV, and that took away from the pacing at times. That said, for a debut novel, it wasn’t a bad attempt. I’m interested in reading more from this author as she continues to grow and develop her writing.

Definitely twists and turns...

So much going on in this book so many lives effected and intertwined but an awesome read. I don't think it's anything we'd expect going in yet it draws yiu in nonetheless. Well written entertaining to say the least. The 1st chapter stated off with a bang!!!!

Chaos

Pure chaos from the start, no easing into it at all. So much manipulation and reckless decision making, with karma wasting no time. Chance was solid, but Foxy stayed caught in the middle of mess despite everything she’s endured. Just when it feels predictable, the plot twists hit back to back. Messy, dramatic, and definitely keeps your attention.

This story was everywhere. The flow and the plot was not consistent. It had potential but I feel like if the story had more consistency meaning it followed through with the beginning story it could’ve been better. There is no romance at all in the book so I don’t know why it would be called an unhinged romance. I was confused most of the book.

100000/10

From start to finish, this was an addictive read! The author has so many juicy layers and secrets that kept me entertained. It’s like as soon as I thought I understood what was going on another piece was added. Then to kinda leave a tad bit of mystery that there may be another person who killed River was genius. Even though I pieced together that it was Fazion! Junky was developed so good because he is added to my list of hated MMCs! Amazing read!!

If you want unhinged fuckery this is the book for you!! I was on an emotional roller coaster. I even wanted to fight and kill characters off as well. Right when Foxy finds Mr. Right he is snatched away from her. The ending is so good. Grab your copy it will not disappoint.

Couldn't put it down!

First off, Come to the front AUTHOR! This book was so good I literally couldn't put it down after I picked it up. As soon as I thought there would be a calm point, it wasn't. It was spicy, unhinged, crazy, and street all mixed up into one.

super raw and unhinged. This book shows how small the world is. How you could be right next to someone in your family and not even know. I also learn i need to listen to red flags cause Junky was in a world of his own. I'm glad he got what he deserved, i need to know how much time he does.

From page ONE, I was IN IT. By halfway, I felt like an accomplice and by the end I was like, “I KNOW you lying… but okay, I’m glad it worked out.” This book was action-packed, twist after twist—every time I thought, “Okay, we’re good,” BAM, another plot twist. Sweet Pea really did her thang. Period

This was a wild ride

Nothing about this story was predictable. It was unhinged from the beginning to the ending. In my opinion Foxy was that girl because everybody wanted her in some way or form.
