Hilda Furacão passa-se em Belo Horizonte no início dos anos 60, Hilda, a Garota do Maiô Dourado, enfeitiçava os homens na beira da piscina em um dos mais tradicionais clubes, o Minas Tênis. Por algum motivo secreto muda-se para o quarto 304 do Maravilhoso Hotel, na zona boêmia da cidade. Transformada em Hilda Furacão, a musa erótica tira o sono da cidade. Hilda é uma personagem misteriosa. A razão que a leva a deixar a sua vida na alta burguesia e a torna prostituta persegue-nos durante todo o livro.
É uma personagem viva. Nós ouvimo-la, sentimos as suas mudanças de humor.
O livro cativou-me pelos seus mistérios e personagens. Principalmente o santo. Um homem que quer ser santo. E o aramel, que quer ser actor e promete chover dólares.
No meio a realidade política brasileira embrenhada numa revolução. Desconheço bastante da história brasileira mas o lamiré fez-me ter vontade de ler livros de Jorge Amado que tenho em casa.
O final, no entanto, deixa muito a desejar. Faltam explicações. A tão prometida explicação da Hilda nunca chega e ficamos à espera do desfecho final. O desfecho do Adão nú, o desfecho do Pretty Boy, o desfecho do romance.
Um livro agradável para o verão e para quem quer saber mais sobre a história política do Brasil.

ver belo horizonte no seu auge como cidade e em um período em que estava fervilhando foi delicioso, quando pegava para ler não conseguir ler um ou dois capítulos apenas. esperava o foco em hilda e malthus, mas recebi uma gama de personagens interessantes que representam bem alguns arquétipos da época, uma caracterização de lugar detalhada o suficiente pra me deixar curiosa e uma história que não se desenvolve de forma linear, mas envolve do início ao fim. adorei!!!

I have so much to say rn. The narrator is unreliable, quirky, he wrote the book as if he was writing a diary and it was really a cool move. The political names and theories went over my head. The side characters were nicely written. The short poems were so beautiful.

And now the reason I chose the book was for Hilda. I still cannot believe the ending between Malthus and her. But the ending was the best thing I have ever read. I came to this book while watching the show, so I definitely recommend you reading this after watching "Hilda Furacão"

The writing is excellent, and I loved the narrator, but wtf was this ending?? thank god they created the TV show and gave us a proper ending and more spotlights for the romance. Anyways, good times... but I advise you to watch the series first so you will actually like the book.

Sob o perigo de soar ignorante, devo dizer que esse livro é um documento histórico valioso que fala sobre o movimento comunista em Belo Horizonte e o golpe militar, mas que infelizmente me entediou. Para um livro chamado “Hilda Furacão”, é decepcionante que a personagem seja só cerca de 10% da trama, se muito. Mas ele brilha quando fala dela, uma personagem cativante e misteriosa que conquistou minha atenção e interesse a cada breve aparição. Nunca assisti a minissérie, mas desconfio que ela seja mais focada na personagem homônima e que me agrade mais. É um livro bem escrito e interessante, mas que infelizmente pecou na brincadeira com as expectativas do leitor.

Prós: escrita envolvente, simples, em formato de diário, sucinta e objetiva.
Contras: acaba muito rápido, livro curto.

A história é apaixonante, resolvi ler após assistir a minissérie de 98. Gosto da forma com que Malthus é mais explorado no livro, assim como seus sentimentos, a passo que na televisão ele parecia mais um pano de fundo pra história de Hilda. Fazendo o paralelo com a série, gosto que na TV desenvolveram mais o relacionamento dos dois JUNTOS (pois o que se sabe no livro é apenas o que Roberto escuta), mas, em contrapartida, o desenvolvimento de Malthus e o motivo pelo qual foi preso ao final da trama já é explicado desde o começo, o que senti falta de assistir na série. Recomendo.

Vi muitas pessoas desapontadas que o livro não é focado na Hilda e no Santo. A história deles é só uma das muitas do livro, tão interessantes quanto o cenário político e Aramel e Gabriela. Não saber o motivo exato de ela ter se tornado prostituta faz parte do charme e do mistério, onde você deve tirar suas próprias conclusões. De certa forma, a minissérie da Globo é a resposta dessas críticas, focando mais no casal principal o que tirou parcialmente o mistério da Hilda, além de focar em algo bem legal que são os personagens da Zona Boêmia, algo que eu senti um pouco de falta no livro.

mi mayor consejo es: vean la novela, no lean el libro.

la novela es mucho más completa, agrega nuevos personajes, la cronología no es confusa, y el contexto histórico se sobreentiende. además, ves la perspectiva que tenían los brasileros en esa época.
este libro es exactamente igual en términos de trama, pero la cronología es confusa. el libro en sí es corto y los capítulos se leen rápido, no obstante carece de la complexidad que tiene la novela. la diferencia notoria en ambas es el final.

This is originally written in Portuguese and honestly the book isn’t even that long so I took longer with it than I should have 😅 but yes it’s definitely an interesting story and to know it’s based on real people and true events? Mind blown

I don’t really understand Hilda’s motivations and I’m honestly sad she and Malthus do not end up together.
I was expecting a feel good ending.

As for aramel and Gabriela 😢….
Roberto was definitely a character, ifykyk.

Anyways I loved this book, I got swept up in the world of Minas Gerais for 262 pages and I loved every minute of it

Ten/ten would recommend to anyone to read.
Taking one star off because of the ending which I did not particularly care for at all….

I read the translated version, which I've heard isn't as good as the original Portuguese book, but I enjoyed this. It's a flawed book and I think the TV show did some justice to the heartbreak and romance. I read this more as a farce and I guess the book wasn't necessarily romantic compared to the show. I thought the translation was well done since I actually enjoyed how dry the writing was. The ending was anticlimactic though and I hate that the author practically used Hilda as a tool. Her character wasn't explored as much as I would've liked. She felt like a Mary Sue to me.

I had a terrible headache, one that the Saint would relate to, on the course of this novel—and this Brazilian Portuguese accent isn’t leaving my mind even as I write this review, so you see my frustrations.

Also, fuck you, Roberto Drummond! I love you, man, but fuck you. I fucking loathe you to the core right now. I will never forget this!

I was up for 32 hours (with less than 3 hours nap before I continued coz I didn’t want to lose the pace I had) watching the soap opera version of this book, obsessed about some priest and prostitute’s complicated relationship, convulsing even that I would vomit because this depressing pain I have is so visceral that I would literally react physically—I really want them to be together! and then the telenovela gave me this open ending that I hated so much (i love it now) because it wasn’t enough! Everybody loves a definitive ending! Especially in romance! God, I invested 32 fucking hours for that soap opera! And that’s what I got? I was fucking livid. That just wasn’t enough.

I was having this fever. I was crazy to the bones, because I wanted to see how it really ends. I wanted to see a happy Malthus and Hilda. That I had to look up the book. I saw a review that the book was one of the most beautiful endings up there (a big thank you, by the way. that’s sarcastic icymi). And I was like, WHAT?! I, then, was filled with hope. Now, I had to read it! I needed that conclusion! I needed it so bad I would rip my stomach and flip it from the inside out. That’s how badly I wanted the book. I needed a great fairytale ending to this story—to my pain, to my uncured obsession for this two entwining souls. As if it was my last request before they hammered the final nail to my coffin and send me off to the sea. Fuck, I needed a goddamn fulfilling send off, so I had to consume this format. And I knew, my soul would rejoice and be contented I would never haunt anyone.

And there comes another 13 hours of my delirious obsession to devour the same story in novel format. I just loved Santo and Hilda with all my heart. But fuck you, Roberto for doing this. You know what? I’m no longer calling you Roberto, you sick fuck. ROBERT FRANCIS! As you so hated. That’s your name! Because you make me mad! You make me hate you so much! WHAT THE FUCK? I invested another 13 hours for what? For an April Fool’s joke?

You know what’s even sick? I watched Hilda Hurricane, eve of March 31. And afterwards running for myself to save me from this terrible pain caused by the soap opera, so I read this book to comfort me. Or so I thought. I really brought it upon my self. I can only blame me. My own April Fool’s joke. Fuck this, I’m in need of sleep.

P.S. I can’t even give it a lower rating coz it was actually a good read. It was scandalously legendary. What’s awesome is how it discussed society’s hypocrisy in every aspect—religion, politics, relationship, gender, prostitution, culture, and class in no more than 280 pages. It was sick and raw, such revelation indeed. And whether I admit it or not, this was such an unputdownable book that will leave you in a feverish dream. It was so conversational, the very heart of an epistolary book. Roberto is one hell of a storyteller—don’t tell him that I said that, I very much hate him right now.

P.S.S. Anyway, Roberto, your Aunt Little Heart must be so pissed at you right now. And so am I. You had one job, Roberto! YOU HAD ONE JOB! And you’re so bad at it, you terrible, unreliable narrator, you. But I love you. How do I sleep now? Such angst, with no cure it’s almost depressing. There’s a gaping hole in my chest, to the shape of Hilda and Santo!

P.S.S.S. Still, this book captured things missed on the telenovela, and vice versa. So, you really would enjoy it and such after watching the series. But I was livid, sure. Men and their unromantic souls! I fucking hate men. Gosh, I was pining so bad for them to be together.

Adios, even Rodrigo Santoro can’t salva me if I don’t sleep now.

The moment I could get my hands on a very hard to find copy of this precious Brazilian book, I just held it without second glances. And I know that getting an English translation of the story must be like heresy or something like that, but my understanding of the Portuguese language was too dusty for me to try reading it in its original language, so I gave it a shot in English and I just really enjoyed the story.

THE ACHE OF HILDA.

Hilda, the girl of the golden bikini. Hilda Furação… We saw her inmediatly like a nymph, like an omnipresent goddess that is a mystery to everyone but that’s exactly what drives her to have many clients and admirers. It is not until her last night when we see her as this child who forced herself to go through horrible torture (emotional and physical) because of a hope at being happy. A young woman who suffers every day wearing a mask of flirtatious smiles and made-up laughter, someone who loved only once but because of fate wasn’t able to live that fated happiness.

THE MISFORTUNE.

I had read on a YouTube comment that they gave the main couple a better ending in the TV adaptation than in the original work, so I was expecting for them to not end up together. However, a reader always hopes for a change of direction, I wanted, I needed for them to end up together and when that didn’t happened I was left incredibly sad.

MORE HILDA AND THE SAINT.

I mean I was expecting the book to have more of them instead of the whole gang of Belo Horizonte to have more importance than them. I’m not upset, but still, I feel a bit jealous about it. I mean, it’s not like what Roberto narrated wasn’t interesting, but the book has her name for a reason, and not the tribulations of my hometown instead. That would be my only complaint.

Estava muito empolgada para ler esse livro, que tem como pano de fundo Belo Horizonte de 63 se preparando para o golpe militar de 64.
Hilda Furacão deveria contar a história da prostituta que atendia na rua boêmia de Minas Gerais e que outrora havia sido a Garota do Maiô Dourado nos clubes da cidade. O mistério cerca a vida da musa erótica sobre o motivo que a fez trocar os clubes pelo quarto 304. Ela acaba passando pela vida dos "três mosqueteiros" mineiros, Roberto, o narrador; Aramel que queria ser ator e Malthus, o frei wannabe. Hilda acaba se apaixonando pelo frei que acredita que ela deve ser o desafio que precisa vencer para se tornar santo.

A história é muito boa, o autor ele usou de personagens e descrições reais misturadas com ficção que faz até hoje, a história ser questionada se foi verídica ou não. Ela te prende, te deixa curiosa, te enrola... meu problema é que enrolou demais. Quando um livro leva o nome de alguém, a gente espera que o livro se trate sobre esse alguém. Apesar de Hilda ser supostamente a protagonista do livro, ela quase não teve espaço. O livro se tratava mais dos outros personagens e do golpe político que deu início à ditatura do que propriamente a Hilda.
Fiquei muito chateada com o final. Foi tanta enrolação, autoflagelação, doce de jabuticaba... pra no final... ACONTECER O QUE ACONTECEU.
Ainda estou profundamente indignada. O livro finaliza sem responder a pergunta mais importante do livro.
Recomendo para aqueles que amam história brasileira e jornalismo. Caso você esteja querendo ler esse livro pela Hilda, vai perder viagem. A suposta protagonista mal aparece.

A bitter sweet ending, but knowing that these two still love each other more than anything else in their hearts is enough for me, to be honest.

Of course, my heart can't help but go out for Aramel the Handsome, as shitty as he was, though this doesn't mean I hate Gabriela, she was just sixteen when she was intertwined with him and for her to make a decision like that, I really can not fault her for what she's been through.

I suppose that only person that actually gets a some what happy ending would be Drummond and Beautiful B...

comecei essa história sem saber quem era hilda furacão, e terminei me questionando a mesma coisa.

a personagem que dá título ao livro nada mais é do que um elemento secundário para a história que realmente quer ser contada: a ascenção do conservadorismo no brasil. e nada mais adequado do que uma prostituta para representar essa "sujeira" da sociedade.

hilda é a representação do que BH estava se tornando naquele período e tudo que era rejeitado pelos conservadores. era dada como destruidora de lares, mas a responsabilidades nunca recaia sobre os homens que iam procurá-la. ela era considerada "o mal", mas na verdade era gentil, bondosa, e procurava conexão humana como qualquer pessoa.

seu romance com frei malthus é pouco explorado, mas a conclusão dele diz tudo que precisamos saber: ele abandona a vida de frade pelo amor com quem é tudo de errado para a sociedade.

o narrador é hilário, consciente do que o leitor que saber e mesmo assim se recusando a ir direto ao ponto, preocupado em contar a história dao jeito dele.

sou suspeita pra falar, mas amo personagens femininas que são misteriosas, conceituais, quase místicas, simplesmente porque fogem do padrão do que a sociedade espera.

hilda dava seus últimos suspiros de liberdade até o golpe militar, e quando isso aconteceu não é à toa que ela foi embora do país, pois não lhe sobrava mais nada. hilda furacão é o brasil.
