FORMERLY The Love Triangle

In the race of life, everyone faces their unique obstacles, and Fola Ige has had her fair share— right from birth.

First, there is the backdrop of her bickering, woefully mismatched parents—her stoic medical doctor father and permanently dissatisfied stay-at-home mother. Then there is the ‘reality’ of how their life falls short of the luxury and splendour that her mother expects not just for herself, but for Fola and her three siblings.

But no obstacle is as complicated and punishing as having Dolapo “Dolly” as a sister. Prettier, poutier, and petty, not to mention messy as hell, Dolly being a year older is the bane of her existence and the albatross of Fola’s life, especially when it comes to Jimi Fajobi.

For the next twenty years, through failed marriages, affairs, scandals, and across continents, the unholy love triangle between Fola, Dolly, and Jimi will be the fodder for a rollercoaster none of them ever bargained for or expected.

Every Choice But Us is a rom-com examination of deep themes like betrayal, lust, fragmented families, sibling rivalry, materialism, pride, and mental illness. It is a bittersweet yet familiar and well-conceived story about a golden age in Nigerian contemporary culture and the casualties and triumphs of the time period, masterfully told by Adesuwa O’man Nwokedi.

This is a second-chance romance, but it didn’t really feel like one to me. It felt more like two people who were stuck in love across different stages of their lives, even when they really shouldn’t have been.

It’s also a love triangle, but not your typical one. This is Jimi, Fola, and Fola’s own sister, Dolly, and honestly… everyone was doing something. Jimi especially, but Dolly and even Fola at times made things more complicated than they needed to be.

What stood out to me the most was how real the characters felt. They were flawed in ways that made sense, and you could clearly see how their upbringing, family dynamics, and personal insecurities influenced their decisions.

Fola, in particular, was frustrating at times. Watching her self-sabotage in her thirties was a lot, but at the same time, I understood where it was coming from. Being rejected by someone she loved in favor of her sister shaped how she saw herself, and that insecurity followed her into her marriage, her divorce, and even her life afterward.

Her growth was one of my favourite parts of the story. I liked that her turning point wasn’t centered on a man, but on choosing herself, her healing, her career, and her life. It felt like things only started to fall into place after that.

The family dynamics added a lot of depth to the story. From her parents’ relationship to everything going on with Dolly, it was messy but very believable. I also liked how her parents eventually found their way back to each other.

The romance itself was emotional and engaging. It had the giddiness, the tension, and the pain, and it genuinely made me feel something. At the same time, the drama could be overwhelming. The back and forth and repeated mistakes made parts of the story feel like a rollercoaster.

Overall, this was a really engaging read that explored love, family, ambition, and growth in a way that felt grounded and familiar. Adesuwa’s writing made it easy to get into and hard to put down.

Dolly whyyyyyy 😭
Whatever you do, just pray you don’t have a sibling like Dolapo because what do you mean by “I’m in love with my sister’s ex-husband?” That immediately grabbed my attention.

This book tells the story of a love triangle between two sisters — Fola, the youngest, and Dolapo, the eldest — with Jimi Fajobi caught in the middle.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the author moved the story from the past to the present with almost no plot holes. The “10 years later” part, where we got to see how the characters navigated their lives, was especially incredible. The love, betrayal, jealousy, anger, and regret — every emotion was wrapped into this one book.

I do wish we got Jimi’s POV because his thoughts and feelings weren’t always clear to me. And for some reason, I honestly didn’t like him at all 😭. He was constantly getting on my nerves, but Fola really tried sha.

Fola’s mum, on the other hand, did not help matters at all. Worst mother of the year award goes to her 😅😅😅

If you enjoy books filled with love triangles, family drama, betrayal, and a touch of heartbreak, then this book is definitely for you 😉👌💖

Once I got into the book, I could hardly put it down. I rarely read books twice, but I'm willing to read this one over and over again.

There were so many things I loved about this book that I'd love to highlight;

First, I love the relatability of each character. We read about how honestly flawed they are and how their behaviours typified the behaviours we could see around. I'm so sure these characters have been experienced in the real world.

Second, there was a smooth transition between different times in the book and we could easily follow through with the plot. Also, the short characters didn't make it burdensome to read. It held my interest from start to finish.

Third, I liked how Fola picked herself over any relationship/man and focused on her healing, career and her life generally. I was rooting for that change all through. I feel it was after that she truly became independent and things fell in place.

The character I disliked the most would be Dolly, I couldn't just fathom why she did what she did, but then I have her mother to blame for aiding her on. Adesuwa didn't give me closure with Dolly, because I want to truly see where her escapade at the end of the book will lead to.

I rate this book a 4.5⭐.

I’m strongly of the belief that this book was rage bait.

First of all, this is absolutely not a jab at Adesuwa Oman Nwokedi as an author, because she’s genuinely talented, but THIS BOOK? Pure rage bait.

Jimi was such an egotistical, bare minimum, hypocritical, nonchalant, and honestly uninteresting character. I would have loved to read his POV, because every single encounter with him was basically:
straight face, no emotions, no words, no explanation, just cold passive staring.

And the emphasis on Fola only being with one man after her ex-husband had practically toured the entire continent was absurd. Somehow it’s acceptable for a man to move on and sleep around endlessly, but the moment a woman does the same, it becomes shameful and unforgivable. Please. I honestly would have preferred if she had actually dated other men seriously, just to see whether silly Jimi would still want her afterward.

Then there was the whole “consciously becoming a size 18” angle. Was that really necessary?

And don’t even get me started on the dating pool. Why did every single man have to be completely unhinged? Is that normal? And then the one seemingly decent guy eventually threatens to rape her? What exactly was happening here?

The book was marketed as a romcom, but the only comedic thing about it was how genuinely pathetic Fola’s life became.

Then I got to this part:

“The guy wants to marry!”
I flipped from one text message to the other. Mere hours after being heartbroken by Jimi yet again, I was faced with the possibility of love.
Maybe one of these guys could be my husband.
Maybe one of them would be the Romeo to my Juliet.
The Gbolahan to my mother’s Anike.
But which one of these texts should I answer?”

I’m sorry, but her desperation and complete lack of standards nearly gave me restless leg syndrome because WHAT do you mean?

Now back to narcissistic Jimi.

Imagine him accusing her of “substituting one groom for another” when she came back, meanwhile this man was literally planning a wedding in front of her until he got dumped, then suddenly decided to profess his love. Why was he acting like her actions were unforgivable?

The only time Jimi ever seemed interested in Fola was when he saw her entertaining other men, and even then she kept lowering her standards further by telling him how terribly those men treated her on dates. Does her mouth not have a pause button?

And Dolly? I am not going to give her writing time. That chaotic woman has had enough.
Na Fola I blame.. cos she continuously hurt her over and over again, yet somehow ended up living a far more interesting life than the fola who kept opening both her home and heart to her repeatedly.

Ironically, one of my favorite moments in the book was when Fola finally said this:

“I had a front row seat as you went from Ava to Rosaline to Lacey to Courtney to Monica, and let’s not forget your friend-with-benefits, Tamika! And then you got engaged to Clairice, and I had to watch that too! Then when I finally pulled myself together to move on, to try to date someone else, you decided that, hey now, I was worth having another look at after all.”

I literally breathed a sigh of relief because FINALLY, she was speaking up.

Because this man rarely ever chased after her when she was upset. Most times he just sat there or carried on with his life like she didn’t matter at all, only to later flip the script and make her seem like the problem whenever they reunited.

Omo, I taya.

This book stressed me out badly. Every Choice But Us was simply too much rage bait for me. I cannot, biko.

Second time really is a charm. How is it possible that this is my second time reading this story and it somehow hit even harder than the first? Like… how? 😲

I first read Every Choice But Us last year (then titled Love Triangle) during my personal Adesuwa reading rampage—yes, I was determined to get my hands on every Adesuwa Oman Nwokedi book I could find 😂. But this reread? It gave me all the feels in a whole new way.

This book is honestly nothing short of amazing.

First, can we talk about the names—Folajimi and Folabomi? What a lovely pairing. Even their names feel like poetry.

The story follows Folabomi and her beautifully complicated relationship with Folajimi, a love story stretched across more than two decades. But this is more than romance; it’s layered with family dynamics, misunderstandings, growth, sacrifice, and second chances. And Dolly? Ah! That sister was forever pouring sand inside somebody’s garri 😅—always scheming, always sabotaging. Yet even she was so well written.

What really stayed with me was the friendship between Bomi and Jimi, especially in the latter part of the book. It quietly reinforces something I believe deeply: the best love stories are often rooted in friendship.

And the side characters? Superb. Mummy Jay and Seyi were written with such warmth and depth. Even the “villains” were not one-note. Every character landed. No misses.

I learned so much from this book—about love, patience, not jumping to conclusions, showing up for the people you love, and even parenting. And whew… Folabomi and Folajimi? Two stubborn heads, truly 😄. They gave me Diego and Paloma energy—chaotic, passionate, impossible, and somehow deeply meant for each other.

This story had heart, drama, tenderness, and enough emotional tension to keep me invested all over again. And can we be honest? Adesuwa cooked here. She really did.

A very deserving 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Highly recommended for romantics at heart, young couples, and even parents. If you love love stories built on friendship, longing, and enduring connection, this one is for you.

A rollercoaster and enjoyable journey toward a happily-ever-after between Jimi and Fola.

The complex relationship between the sisters was very well written. Fola, however, was the queen of self-sabotage. I wanted to slap her so many times! Girl, you’re in your thirties! lol.

My favourite part was when she quit her old job and finally focused on herself instead of chasing men up and down. I can never really understand women like that. Maybe because I’ve always been a go-getter. Relationships have always been secondary to my goals.

I was glad Fola eventually chose to put herself first. Good relationships often come when a woman prioritises her own growth and happiness. When a man enters a relationship with someone who already values herself and her goals, he’s more likely to behave himself, knowing the relationship isn’t her entire world.

If you enjoy love triangles with twisted family dynamics, this one will definitely be your jam.

I finished the book in one sitting, that’s how good it was. Fola and Jimi have to be one of my favorite Adesuwa MC’s after Yomi and Jaiye in Jaiye Jaiye. I really wish they’d gotten back together earlier than they did and that’s the only reason I’m giving it a 4.5 instead of 5 stars. The angst and yearning in the years of separation made up for it a little bit.

Another high note was the love between their both families, especially mummy Jay and Fola. They loved and supported each other so much and it was so beautiful to read.

Nobody tells Nigerian love stories like Adesuwa.

I am a huge fan of this writer so I was definitely picking this one up as well.

I love the storyline and the rollercoaster of a relationship between Fola and Jimi. The plot was well done, the story well planned and the characters particularly developed.

However, I have a qualm and that is the way I was not able to see through Jimi's yearning. The single POV by Fola caused that. While I love this in The Ginika's Bridesmaids Series, I really wanted to be inside Jimi's head. Other than this, the book is perfection.

There’s a lot about this book I loved! How most characters are human and flawed. How the writer tries to develop most of the characters you encounter so there’s a bit more of them to work with. How accessible the language is, and most importantly how well she writes the villain!

It did feel overwritten in places, like the same point could have been made in fewer pages!

It took me a little to get into the book but once I did, I could hardly put it down. The book showed how flawed we are as people and it showed the realistic nature of humans. I’m glad Dolly didn't get what she wanted the most as most books still give the villains a happy ending. Though this book stressed me out but it’s a great book nonetheless.

I’m yet to see any book that Adesuwa has written that I hate.

This was not your typical romance novel, it has so many ups and downs in the lives of the characters.
I loved how it felt real and relatable and the writer made it quite clear that love can sometimes be unpredictable and even destructive to an extent.
Overall, the ending made it all worth it and I absolutely loved it.

I enjoyed this one! Fola suffered too much due to Dolly’s selfishness but you see karma, it always has a way of surfacing when you least expect it.
Fola’s second marriage to Jimi is testament to the fact that true love never dies. This novel is everything and more.
