Rate this book
A mother's last words. A daughter's frozen heart. And an ancient guardian who has loved three generations of the same family.

Nadya Chia Huiyan does not cry.

Not when her mother died three years ago. Not when her friends try to break through her walls. Not when the world demands she feel something other than the cold control that keeps her standing.

She has built her armor well. Ice queen, they call her. The girl who sees lies but refuses to see her own grief.

Then a journal appears on her desk.

Her mother's handwriting. Her mother's secrets. Her mother's voice, reaching across death itself with seven impossible

"If you're reading this, I'm already gone."

What follows will shatter everything Nadya believes about her family, her power, and the magnificent hornbill spirit who has been watching over her bloodline for eight hundred years.

KALAUNG HAS A SECRET.

The vainest of the Devatar. The one who comments on everyone's appearance, who preens endlessly, who speaks in theatrical flourishes. But beneath the performance lies something ancient and wounded.

Three generations of women.

Three generations of love.

Three generations of watching the ones she chose walk toward battles that would take them from her.

Now the truth is surfacing. And Kalaung must keep protecting Nadya from the weight of her inheritance, or finally let the girl carry what her mother and grandmother carried before her.

Some secrets are not hidden to deceive.

They are hidden to protect.

Until the one who needs them is strong enough to carry them.

THE SIXTH BOOK IN THE BESTSELLING DEVATAR SERIES

When an enemy from thirty years ago emerges—one who should have stayed dead—Nadya must master her Truth Sight before illusions consume everything she loves. But how do you fight lies when the biggest lie is the one you have been telling yourself?

That you are fine.

That you do not need anyone.

That the walls you built are keeping you safe, when really, they are keeping you prisoner.

WHY FAMILIES ARE READING DEVATAR

This is not just a fantasy adventure. This is a story about grief and healing. About mothers and daughters. About the things we inherit and the things we choose to become.

Parents are reading alongside their children and finding conversations they never expected—about loss, about love, about letting people in when every instinct says to push them away.

Young readers are discovering that strength is not about hiding your tears. It is about letting them fall and still standing afterward.

Animal lovers are falling in love with Kalaung—the rhinoceros hornbill spirit whose vanity hides eight hundred years of devotion, whose dramatic flair masks a heart that has broken and healed and broken again, yet still chooses love.
