We met Wren Ashwood, 17 yrs old, as she is dealing with the sudden death of her mother, leaving her uprooted and now living in Ketchikan, Alaska with her guardians, Leslie and Peter. She was born in Ketchikan, Alaska, but has no memory of it.
We quickly are pulled into her desire to learn about her mother, Laurel Ashwood, who after she dies, Wren realizes that she knows nothing about her mother. She doesn't even know her birthday. She also wants to learn about her father to try and help her figure out the mystery of her own background.
Wren is dealing with dreams that feel like they are real. They are focused on a boy, who lives in a hidden society in the forest and who has magic. The society that he lives in is magical and they live separate from the society that Wren is living in.
Oddly, Wren finds herself pulled into the forest but tries not to let it pull her in. The story quickly starts taking us into unexpected twists and turns! Wren's life is suddenly in danger and follows her in life & her dreams of the society in the forest. The magic system was elemental which was fun to read and learn about in the world.
Wren's life will pull you into the mystery & the danger she is dealing with. This YA fantasy is a clean and no spice book. I highly recommend it.

In a nutshell, Betwixt is a story of self-discovery, grief, and belonging. The Alaskan setting with its lush, mysterious forests perfectly set the stage. If you're searching for all the Twilight vibes, but without paranormal creatures, the atmosphere of this book will satisfy that craving. It also offers some nostalgic urban fantasy elements with the forest becoming something of a character itself. It's equally beautiful/dangerous, yet always alluring.
Wren is a breath of fresh air. If things suck, she calls it like it is. Although she keeps to herself, Wren radiates self-confidence, and her determination is unmatched. She's one of those people who takes awhile to get to know, but once she lets you in, you'll never find a better friend. I also identified with her grief/anger over things outside of her control. She has quite the complex family history, but none of it is her fault. However, there are some who wish to make her pay for the past mistakes of others. When she has the chance to seek retribution, Wren chooses mercy and forgiveness. Throughout the book, she learns that pain is not something unique to her. Many suffer from pain in varying degrees; it's a weight most of us learn to carry.
It has the most precious romance. I love Wren and Alder. They are the perfect grumpy/sunshine couple. For most of the book, Wren is quite prickly. She can be defensive and untrusting even when someone doesn't deserve it. On the other hand, Alder is everything warm, funny, and charming. Together, they challenge each other. Wren inspires Alder to question injustice and stand up for himself and others. Alder encourages Wren to let others into her life and never doubt that she belongs regardless what others might say. These two truly bring out the best in each other, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them fall in love.
This is a brilliant YA fantasy debut, and I can't wait for whatever Kimberly writes next!!

I love any story that brings me back to the PNW because my love of YA came from Twilight. The first half of this book gave those same vibes and feelings, the main character confused about what was going on in her world. I wish I could have gotten a glimpse of her in that world more!

If you’re looking for a vibrant Alaskan atmosphere full of plant magic, a sentient forest, and a forbidden romance — this debut YA fantasy might be just for you!! 💚💚
This story follows a young girl named Wren, who after recently losing her mother, has to return to her birthplace Ketchikan, Alaska and live with her new guardians. Little does she realize that after moving there, she will begin experiencing magical abilities that have to do with the surrounding dark forest as well as some confusing visions that seem to come at random. She must now learn to navigate this new, treacherous and dangerous world, while also learning the origins of her mother’s past — all the while trying not to fall in love and die in the process.
This story felt very unique and immersive with an interesting magic system and well-thought out world in this dark forest fantasy! What I wasn’t expecting was the mystery aspect of the story and the interspersed visions the FMC was experiencing that added intrigue and so, so many questions! It was fun figuring out how everything fit together and experiencing such a vast forest world. While the dialogue felt very youthful at times because of the ages of the characters, this story still touched on some pretty deep topics. I liked the incorporation of these themes and felt like it added depth and complexity to the story.
I was pleasantly surprised that this was a debut novel! Although I felt like it had some moments that could have been condensed, all in all the prose and descriptions were beautiful and it felt like a fresh take on plant magic!

Betwixt is an atmospheric, magical YA dark forest fantasy.
This one was absolutely wonderful! From the start, Kimberly Dunham swept me away with her immersive, vivid world-building. The magic system was well-developed and intriguing. The characters were compelling, and I loved their development. The romance was tender and addictive. The plot was twisty and engaging, and the pacing fit the story nicely. Dunham’s prose was sweeping and relatable. I highly recommend this one!

I read Betwixt as an arc, and I loved it! I loved the twilight vibes! It was very unique and beautifully well done! I loved how Wren Ashwood’s story was done. It was full of adventure and mystery. This book leaves you wanting more. There were so many twist and turns I didn’t see coming, especially the story with Wren’s mother and father. I loved how that storyline played out.

This is an absolutely fantastic book! Perfect for YA readers and works great as a standalone, but I do hope the author writes more.
Wren suddenly and tragically loses her mother in a car accident, and then is sent to live with a couple she's never met who were friends with her mother when she had previously lived in Alaska. As she learns more about her mother's past, she realizes that she never really knew her at all...which means she doesn't know herself either.
This is such a good story about grief and loss, but also about finding yourself and believing in yourself. It also doesn't wrap everything up in a pretty little bow, but shows that there are still struggles and disappointments that you can't always fix.

From the very beginning, the setting pulled me in completely. The way the author describes the woods—the evergreens, the damp air, the quiet hum of life, the smells and sounds—made me feel like I was there. If you love forests, and that indescribable feeling of peace and mystery that comes from being surrounded by nature, this book captures it beautifully.
What stood out most to me was the main character’s deep, almost magnetic connection to the woods and to her past, present, and future. That pull—something calling her long before she understands why—runs through the entire story and gives it real emotional weight. Watching her uncover her mother’s hidden past while slowly discovering who she truly is felt powerful and meaningful.
I also really enjoyed the slow-burn YA romance. It was subtle, patient, and never overshadowed the larger story. The balance between magic, mystery, and relationships felt intentional and well paced. The tension between good and evil, insiders versus outsiders, and the secrecy surrounding who could be trusted kept me turning pages.
The idea of a hidden society and the journey from feeling like an outsider to realizing you belong—truly belong—was one of the most satisfying parts of the book. There’s something deeply comforting about watching a character move from loneliness and uncertainty into a sense of home and purpose.

Books set in the forest with a magical twist are some of my favorites! In the novel Betwixt, the use of tree and plant names for the characters was significant and cozy. There were some I wasn't familiar with that I had to look up such as Alder's sister Camas. I've always been drawn to the woods and plant life, even though I'm terrible at growing and caring for plants myself.
My other favorite part of the story was the village in the trees, like, literally in the trees! I can just picture it, a grown up magical version of the Berenstein Bears! I also loved being familiar with the location in Alaska. I vacationed very near Ketchikan a few years ago and this allowed me to immerse further into the setting.
My heart went out to Wren, losing her mother at such a young age. I was sometimes angry with her mother for not sharing her background with Wren but I also understood that she was trying to protect her daughter and probably never imagined she would die and Wren would end up close to the forest where she grew up. All throughout the story I struggled with the choices some of the characters made. It reminded me of real life. As we get older and look back we realize what we didn't know in the moment and wish we might have taken a different path or made a different choice.
This YA Fantasy would have been a non-stop read for me if something called ‘life’ didn't interfere. With that being said, I finished it within the week. The author does an amazing job with the flow of the story, especially considering the switches between present time to Wren’s dreams.
I loved reading this book as an adult and I would have loved it as a teenager. I would definitely recommend it to young and old alike, especially if you love the woodsy magical setting.

While trying to figure out her new life, new home, and new school, she makes some startling discoveries: her mother had kept a LOT of secrets from her, there’s a voice calling to her from the forest and giving her strange dreams/flashbacks, and suddenly she can make plants grow. It isn’t long before the forest’s call is too strong to ignore, and fortunately, she has the help of Alder, a green-eyed boy with magic of his own, to help her make sense of the hidden world at the edges of her new home.
This YA portal fantasy was hard to put down! I loved the vivid imagery of Alaska - as someone from the PNW, the description of the forests and landscape (and climate!) were so real. It’s obvious Dunham knows her setting and it makes this story that much more engaging. I think what I loved most about this story is how complex and realistic the characters are. Wren is like someone you know: her hopes and fears are relatable, her anger and heartache justified, and you can’t help but root for her every step of the way. Even the most unlikable characters have components to their backstory that help you understand how they’ve gotten that way. It’s such a great exploration of human character and our intrinsic desire to belong.
I highly recommend this book for fans of YA fantasy and coming of age stories. And especially if, like me, you love stories set in the Pacific Northwest and love supporting PNW authors!

Betwixt felt like a delightful combination of Epic and Twilight. The immediate vibes made it feel like stepping straight into the world of Twilight, especially with the beautiful Alaska setting. The Sylvaen people reminded me so much of Moonhaven from Epic, with their forest home and medieval-style weaponry. I also appreciated the Pride and Prejudice references(specially Collin Firth).
I absolutely loved the relationship between Wren and Emery. They made me laugh so much, and their dynamic was such a joy to read. The flashback dreams Wren experienced were also really cool and added a strong sense of mystery to the story.
There was one moment that made me pause, where they were talking about bread and Emery called it sexy, and Wren replied that bread can’t be sexy. It just made me go, “why?”
That said, the romance was incredibly sweet and felt perfectly paced. The setting was beautiful, and overall this was a delightful read. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read Betwixt early.

January 31, 2026Thank you so much for the opportunity to read Betwixt as an ARC. I really appreciate being given the chance to experience this story early.
I was immediately drawn to the concept and the setting. I love stories rooted in Alaska or the PNW, and the atmosphere gave me a nostalgic feeling that reminded me of Twilight kind of. I also really liked the idea of the magic system and the worldbuilding, especially the sense of a hidden magical community existing alongside the real world. I felt like this has so much potential.
As I continued reading, I found myself having a difficult time fully connecting due to the execution. Some of the reveals, especially around the FMC’s identity and the discovery of magic, felt very immediate, and I personally found myself wishing for a bit more internal reflection and processing in those moments.

I was immediately drawn to the concept and the setting. I love stories rooted in Alaska or the PNW, and the atmosphere gave me a nostalgic feeling that reminded me of Twilight kind of. I also really liked the idea of the magic system and the worldbuilding, especially the sense of a hidden magical community existing alongside the real world. I felt like this has so much potential.
As I continued reading, I found myself having a difficult time fully connecting due to the execution. Some of the reveals, especially around the FMC’s identity and the discovery of magic, felt very immediate, and I personally found myself wishing for a bit more internal reflection and processing in those moments.

Months ago Kimberly asked if I’d read her book. She sent me the ebook and I didn’t get to it, so I snagged the audio and I’m so glad I did.
I was intrigued from the start and enchanted by the forest and the answers to secrets that lay inside.
Full of mystery, second chances, corrupt leaders, magic, and interwoven stories.
Wren hasn’t had the easiest childhood, but when her mom passes away and she travels to Alaska with her new guardians she starts hearing the forests’ voice and isn’t able to resist the call
Many dangers lie inside the forest and luckily Wren has Alder on her side. He’s been captivated by her since she moved near the forest and he is determined to help her find answers. Alder has already disagreed with the way things are done in the forest and Wren helps him find the courage to stand.
This world Kimberly created was intricate and intriguing. The flashbacks, twists, and reveals kept me guessing. Choices carry consequences and everything comes full circle and measures the character of each individual involved.

This story quickly sucked me. Wren just lost her mother and is heading to Alaska to live with Guardians she really doesn't know. She quickly finds out that her mother kept secrets and she starts to question if she even knew her at all. Unexplainable things start to happen and the forest starts to call to her - opening a world full of magic and potential answers. But there are still secrets and things aren't always as they seem.
Dunham does a great job of endearing you to the characters and tackles some heavy topics like death sentencing, pregnancy out of wedlock, prejudice, negligent families, and fights/battles with care. Some of the characters also evolve and own up to their mistakes, find a way to forgive, and work to repair what they once broke.
With the coming to age trope, this book is geared towards the YA audience, but can be loved by all ages.

What a enjoyable read! I definitely enjoyed it despite my misgivings about it being magical-realism/low fantasy*. While it didn't edge into the occult but more into the fantastical, I do have a few misgivings about the main character's powers coming from creation and not from a Creator.
Otherwise, the plot, characters, and setting were all interesting, and I really enjoyed the story. Something I really loved was the Alaskan atmosphere as well as the Celtic/Elvish vibes.
*My concerns about magical-realism/low fantasy is that it can dip a bit too much into real life occult and/or witchcraft for my comfort whereas fantasy set in a fake worlds lean more into the fantastical in my opinion.
(Possible spoilers) Content:
No spice/open door scenes. No swearing. One non-main character suggests to another that they should "get rid" of their unborn child. Two non-main characters have secret intimate relations outside of marriage--not shown in a positive light. There are sightings of a ghost who is "betwixt".

Alaska is my favorite setting for books and I adored that much of this story took place in the forest and all of the Indigenous culture that was woven in. When high school aged Wren loses her mom, she moves to Alaska to live with her new guardians and her world explodes as she discovers magic and her life is threatened. As she endeavors to learn more about her mom, she grows closer to Alden as they try to keep her alive. The elemental magic system was lovely and there were twists and turns in the story. I sped through this book and I’m excited to see what this author writes next. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.5. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

The writing was addicting, as we follow Wren in her journey of mourning her mother as she uncovers more and more mysteries of her background.
The magic and the writing was beautiful as we went through Wren's trauma, the day by day of her life was not easy to handle but watching Wren grow was a sight to see and seeing the friendships she made on the way, the little place she carved for herself made my heart sing.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves the chosen one trope.

Think Twilight meets a magical Celtic forest fantasy set in Alaska.
When I first started reading, this book had a very strong Twilight vibe. Like Bella in Twilight, Wren (Betwixt’s main character), is relocating to her roots by herself. She comes into a small high school in a small, rural town - this one in Alaska. The whole vibe feels cloudy, moody, with lots of green.
I enjoyed the atmospheric aspects of Twilight, but I worried that I might be reading something too similar. But that didn’t last long!
The beginning is where those similarities ended. It wasn’t long before Wren is searching for answers to her past, feeling called by a magical forest, meeting a cute, mysterious boy, and possibly finding the answers she seeks. You’ll have to read to find out! I enjoyed this read!

Wren soon realizes that her mother has been keeping more secrets than she ever knew and that she barely knows anything about her mother at all, especially about their time before they left the small town in Alaska before she was born.
As soon as she arrives in Ketchikan, Wren feels a belonging that she can’t explain and it doesn’t take long to realize what is pulling her to this place. The dark, mysterious forest is literally calling to her and it doesn’t take long before she can’t help but give in.
Betwixt gave me serious Twilight vibes with the moody forest setting and healthy dose of the supernatural.

I love me a good modern day urban fantasy, and Betwixt delivered in all the right ways. It's written from the perspective of Wren as she goes on a journey of self discovery and learning that all is not the way it seems. She's written with believable feelings of grief, anxiety and awkwardness. Throw in a dash of magical awakening and you've got all the pieces for one heck of an epic puzzle!
The lead up to the big reveal was a fun ride to go on. I'm proud to say that I guessed correctly and the redemption toward the end was amazing. Low-key hoping there's a book two coming. I will cry crystal tears of utter joy if there is.
Betwixt is a perfect spice-free adventure for the YA reader in your life (or for you, no shame!) I'm so glad I got to read this, and you will be too!

I bought this book to support the author not knowing how much I would enjoy it! From the first page, I was swept away into a story that took me out of the stress of life and into another world in the most wonderful way. I typically listen to audio books but purchased a hard copy at a book signing and finished it in 5 days. The characters are well written and make me want to spend more time with them so I can know more about their back stories, their every day lives and friendships, and journey with them to what lies ahead. I hope she releases a sequel soon!

I LOVED this story! The moody forest vibes, Wren’s self-discovery journey, the secrets that unravel and truths that are revealed, it was all so well done! I also thought the sweet romance storyline was well written for a YA book. It does have some deeper themes and a few deaths (discussed, not detailed) that may be harder for younger teen readers, so just something to be aware of. But gosh, what a good book! I can’t wait to read more of whatever Kimberly writes.

This book is fascinating YA fantasy with Celtic influences. The characters and the setting (Alaska) are interesting and evocative. I liked both Wren and Alder and the journey they went on. Some of this story followed reasonably predictable pathways, but it was still an enjoyable ride. The magical element was interesting, as was the way the world of Síorghlas was protected against the outside world. Definitely worth a read if you like this genre.

This was such a fun read! It's beautifully written, and the Alaskan wilderness made the whole book feel so atmospheric. It was such a unique story that kept me guessing the whole time, and I never really knew what would happen next. There was mystery, heartbreak, and a really sweet, kind of forbidden slow burn. I highly recommend this one if you enjoy coming-of-age stories, family secrets, elemental magic, or books with no spice.

This book was so good! It was a refreshing, new take on YA fantasy. I loved that it was set in Alaska. I loved Wren and connected with her right away. I ended up reading most of it in one day! I would definitely recommend it to fans of clean fantasy!
