This small town romance novel was so sweet and a lot of fun! This is book two of the “Colburn Brothers” series. This novel can be read as a standalone. It came with some of my favorite tropes, enemies to lovers, healing vibes, and forced proximity. It is a medium paced book that is both plot and character driven. The characters in this book were lovable and not diverse. It made me laugh, feel lighthearted, had me feeling emotional and hopeful!
Even though it made me laugh a lot, it came with many heartwarming moments as well. I really loved Emma’s energy, who is the female main character. The banter and wit the main characters had were great! I could definitely feel the chemistry between the two main characters through the book. This novel is a little spicy, so be sure to keep that in mind while reading it. This book left a heartfelt impact on me. Overall, I give this novel a 4 out of 5 stars rating! This gave me the book, “Things We Never Got Over” by author Lucy Score vibes!

Even though it made me laugh a lot, it came with many heartwarming moments as well. I really loved Emma’s energy, who is the female main character. The banter and wit the main characters had were great! I could definitely feel the chemistry between the two main characters through the book. This novel is a little spicy, so be sure to keep that in mind while reading it. This book left a heartfelt impact on me. Overall, I give this novel a 4 out of 5 stars rating! This gave me the book, “Things We Never Got Over” by author Lucy Score vibes!

I loved He Falls First, the first book in the Colburn Brothers series by Jill Shalvis, so I was excited to get the opportunity to read and listen to an early copy of the second book in the series, Free Falling. Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca and Hambright PR for the gifted copies!
It was lovely to return to Star Falls, California, and the three Colburn brothers (and don’t forget their sister Keira!) and their renovation and restoration business. Free Falling focuses on Caleb, who is still trying to prove himself in the business. He’s a former college hockey star who got injured and had to stop playing hockey. Their company is currently renovating and restoring an old mansion in Star Falls and the architectural liaison assigned to this project is none other than Emma Sumner, who was Caleb’s rival and semi-enemy in their architectural history college program. (I think that’s what it was called.) Emma resents Caleb having “snatched” the internship she coveted, and she’s been struggling to support herself, especially after a fire destroyed almost all her belongings. We get chapters from each of their POVs, which is something I love in a romance book.
The evolution of the relationship between Caleb and Emma was terrific. It took some time for them to open up to each other about their lingering resentments and misunderstandings from their college days. But once they did, their mutual difficult, but very different, childhoods helped them understand each other deeply.
The side characters were well developed, from Emma’s BFF to an adorable pair of boxers (Calvin and Klein, ha!) and another adorable pair, Keira’s toddlers. Caleb’s father had been a very hard father but after a stroke, he’s been reduced to a docile, non-verbal shell of his former self. It was interesting to see Caleb’s attitude toward him gradually soften. I really felt for Emma and her struggles to find affordable housing and a steady job in her field.
There’s a legend in Star Falls that seeing three falling stars means a soulmate will enter your life - and the three Colburn brothers see three falling stars while they are together. The first book focused on Ryder, and I’m hoping that another book will focus on Tucker. After reading Free Falling, I have a feeling I know who his soulmate is!
The audiobook was beautifully narrated by Lila Winters and Sebastian York.

He is in denial until he lays his eyes on his former academic college rival Emma. They start working on a project together to restore a historical building and they realize maybe there’s more to each other than just a grumpy man and a cold woman.

I am officially obsessed with the Colburn brothers, and Free Falling only made me love this series even more. After enjoying the first book, I went into this one with high hopes and it absolutely delivered.
Emma and Caleb’s story pulled me in right away. Their history as college rivals turned workplace enemies creates the perfect tension, and being forced to work closely together on a restoration project only makes the chemistry stronger. Watching that tension slowly shift into something deeper was incredibly satisfying.
Caleb is exactly the kind of hero I adore protective, dependable, and genuinely kind without leaning into toxic traits. The emotional safety within this romance made it even more swoony because you never doubt the strength of their connection.
Emma is just as compelling. She’s resilient, hardworking, and easy to root for. Seeing her allow herself to be vulnerable and open her heart added beautiful emotional depth to the story.
One of my favorite aspects of this series is the strong sense of family. The sibling dynamics and found-family feel bring so much warmth to the book, and I love how each story expands that bond. It makes the town and these characters feel like somewhere you want to stay awhile.
Jill Shalvis has such a gift for writing romances that are both comforting and emotionally engaging. There is the perfect balance of tension, heartfelt moments, humor, and romance the kind of story that leaves you smiling long after you finish.
If you enjoy small-town settings, opposites attract energy, protective heroes, and love stories that feel genuine and supportive, this is definitely a series worth picking up.

💬 All right, this sexy, swoony workplace romance is the second book in the colburn Brothers series and I continue to be impressed. This book was so good! Granted I've only read the first two so far, but I think this one I liked better than the first one (which is about Ryder.)
This book focuses on Caleb and his college rival/current subcontractor, Emma. In this story we also get to spend more time with Kiera and Tucker who are the other two Colburn siblings. I'm guessing that Tucker's book will be next, and I'm not sure if we're going to get one for Kiera?
Anyway, Caleb and Emma 🥹 it took me a minute to get into this, but once I did I really enjoyed the kind of bickering as chemistry/foreplay vibe they had going on. It was warm, heartfelt, and emotional even though I really don't like a stubborn FMC 😂 I guess I was willing to look past it for Emma. I loved the cozy found family/ family vibes
This one I think is also funnier than the first one because I was living for Ryder and Tucker's commentary and just the sibling relationship between the three brothers in general had me cracking up. Like, can we talk about the proposal? 🤣🤣🤣
Personally though I think Hank is probably the most compelling character. I'm really interested to watch as his story continues at least into the next one. Part of me thinks there's going to be something big happening with him.
And finally, this one is also more suspenseful than the first, which I enjoyed a lot, some of the weird things that were happening in Ryder's story start to pick up. I guess we'll find out more about that and Tucker's book as well, so I'm anxiously awaiting that one!

Free Falling is the second book in Jill Shalvis’s Colburn brothers series, and while it can be read alone, you’ll absolutely want to start with book one because these brothers are swoony, imperfect disasters in the very best way. This installment follows Caleb Colburn, a retired hockey player trying to prove himself in the family construction business, and Emma Sumner, the architect liaison he’s forced to work with despite their deeply unpleasant college history. From the moment they’re back in each other’s orbit, the tension is palpable, layered with unresolved hurt, sharp banter, and the kind of chemistry that crackles beneath every interaction.
One thing Jill Shalvis does exceptionally well is writing characters who carry real mess—emotional baggage, complicated pasts, and wounds that haven’t healed neatly—and then letting readers watch that healing unfold in real time. Emma, in particular, tugged hard at my heart. She’s been through it, and I spent a good chunk of this book wanting to give her a hug, tell her to unclench her jaw, and gently encourage her to give Caleb a chance. Their enemies to lovers dynamic is rooted in misunderstanding and pain rather than petty drama, which makes their emotional journey feel grounded and deeply satisfying.
Add in Shalvis’s signature wit, it’s sharp, warm, and laugh out loud funny, and you’ve got a romance that delivers both heart and heat. Emma and Caleb’s banter is top tier, their chemistry undeniable, and their slow earned trust makes the payoff feel earned. Free Falling is comforting, funny, emotionally gratifying romance with depth, and it left me fully invested in this family and counting down the days until the next Colburn brother gets his story.

This is the first Jill Shalvis book I’ve read in years and it was a sweet little small town, second chance romance. I read it as a standalone although it is the second book in the series and I didn’t feel like I had missed anything.
Caleb, the MMC, is back to his small town and finding his stride in the family’s restoration business after an injury ended his college superstar hockey career. His two brothers and sister are all crazy, close and heavily into each other’s business. Their connection is cute and funny but often felt a bit overdone and cheesy.
Caleb reconnects with his college nemesis, Emma, who is fresh into town and trying to scrape her life back together. They fall into their old patterns of distrust and animosity but soon find they have a deeper connection. Emma and Caleb were good together and I liked how they helped each other heal. I didn’t get crazy chemistry between them but they felt solid and believable as a couple.
Overall a cute, sweet second chance romance with a small town setting and a very nosy family. There is a fair amount of build up for the next book - Tucker, the youngest brother, and his childhood best friend Hazel - that actually sounds interesting. I may check it out!

This series makes my heart so happy!! Free Falling is Book 2 in the Colburn Brothers series, and it is just as good as Book 1, He Falls First.
This is a rivals to lovers story with some found family, forced proximity/one bed, and small town romance tropes.

I really loved the FMC, Emma! She’s a short, feisty, smart, independent, loner who “keeps swimming” no matter what life throws at her. Caleb, the MMC, always knows the right things to say and supports Emma no matter what. I absolutely love his dogs, Calvin and Klein. I wanted more time with the side characters in this book. We barely got to see Penny (FMC from Book 1) or her family and parrot, and didn’t get much time with Susie who seems like a funny character.
The plot was medium paced and kept my attention the entire time.
The audiobook is dual narration style. I enjoyed the voices and liked the male narrator’s performance better in this book than in Book 1. I hope they also narrate Book 3!!

The mystery continues for who is causing issues at the Colburn Brothers worksites. I am throwing out a wild guess…what if it’s Hank?

What a story of compassion, love and patience. I love how much Caleb felt for Emma and the things that he did to help her. I hated that she pushed back, but I understand because of her personality. I love the Colburn family! They have been through so much, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the other stories!!

My heart just about broke for Emma. She deliberately held herself alone and separate from everyone, even as she and Caleb were growing closer. There was a moment in Caleb's home, surrounded by evidence of all the love and support in his life, where her isolation came through so devastatingly clear.
Caleb was amazing. He stepped way out of his comfort zone so easily for Emma. He was there when she needed him, even though she didn't want to need him. Both of them showed heaps of growth and change as a couple but also as individuals. I loved the Colburn family, the playful relationship between the brothers, and the way everyone welcomed Emma without qualms.
For all the very serious personal problems covered in this book, there were also plenty of fun, lighthearted moments, and, of course, the palpable chemistry that made it difficult for Caleb and Emma to keep their distance.
This book is for you if you like a steamy, small town romance with flawed yet endearing characters. It's not necessary to read the books in this series in order, but it would help to get to know the characters and to see how the family dynamics develop.

Another Great read from Jill, The second of the Colburn Brothers: Caleb, meets his match in snarky Emma Sumner. They knew each other way back when and assumptions were made in regards too who each of them perceived the other to be, which now as adults and after a few conversations seem to not necessarily be true.
This was an easy going read, the storyline poodles along nicely, with both characters dealing with their own side issues whilst trying to navigate the different relationship they are building together.

Another Great read from Jill, The second of the Colburn Brothers: Caleb, meets his match in snarky Emma Sumner. They knew each other way back when and assumptions were made in regards too who each of them perceived the other to be, which now as adults and after a few conversations seem to not necessarily be true.
This was an easy going read, the storyline poodles along nicely, with both characters dealing with their own side issues whilst trying to navigate the different relationship they are building together.

This was fantastic !! I laughed, swooned and just enjoyed the ride ! I will say I liked this one a lot more than book one. Having some of the characters from the first book in this one as week was the icing on the cake !

Gah … what to say. Caleb and Emma were a hoot and a ride!! These two had some real hate for each other. You start this book with Caleb already at it with the nicknames and picking on her. But remember what they say the boy who tugs on your pigtails isn’t doing it to be mean, it may actually be because he likes you 😜
Without giving away too much of this book this story is about Caleb Colburn and his family is the series focus. All these Colburn men are living their lives, from the mess they built their empire and just doing all they can to be a family, support each other, and make memories. They had a rough upbringing and to see where they are now is a great feat they have reached. Their restoration business is doing very well and Caleb is doing his best to show his family he is series and ready to take on more responsibilities. … in walks Emma Sumner, his college rival and constant pushback. Emma is working with Colburn Restorations on a project with the company she works for and is determined to not let Pretty Boy Caleb over shadow her again.
As always Jill writes great characters who pull you in and have us begging for more. The one liners of Caleb were priceless. This man and his glasses could bring the heat to any campfire 🔥 I also am a sucker for the rain and thunderstorms and Jill brought her A game for those in this book.

Darn it, I need answers! I have a feeling we’ll al be semi-unsurprised by who is behind some nefarious things, but I still don’t know for sure!
But I do know that Caleb is awesome. He and Emma knew each other once. They had a not so pleasant time together, due in large part to deliberate facades by one who thought they needed to be larger than life and also due to misconceptions. And a lost chance at a life changing scholarship. All is explained, and these two do communicate well now. More because Caleb already knows several answers and simply waits for Emma to trust him, but still. Communication.
Emma is difficult to dislike, too. She’s smart and strong and so utterly alone that she can’t trust when anyone seems to actually care. She knows she’s got a lot to work through and with Caleb by her side, I’m pretty sure she’ll get there completely. In fact, I know she will.
I now need answers. I need to know what’s up with Tucker and Hazel. I need more. That’s all. I just finished this and already want to demand more. That’s a sure sign that this is an excellent series if ever there was one!

This author just knows how to write characters that make you love the story. The Colburn siblings are my favorite. She even makes you love Hank, knowing his horrible past. I mean, don't tell anyone this, but I think Jill Shalvis can work magic.
The FMC, Emma, is a character that has you rooting for her, and your heart hurting. She was so smart and talented but down on her luck. She made me want to hug her and offer her some fresh cookies or something. I loved that she was caring but quick witted and had a smart mouth on her.
Caleb was rather delightful too. Yeah he may have been a hotshot hockey star back in the day, but now he's living his dream minus the pain he stays in. I kind of want to see some character art of his tats and glasses.

While the Colburn Brothers series has an overall arc dealing with their father, each book can be read as a standalone and features a brothers’ romance and the falling stars their town is named for.
First Date: The story is told from the points of view of Emma and Caleb through alternating chapters. In the first we meet Emma who has just arrived in Star Falls, California. Things haven’t been good after her apartment burned down, but she has plans to turn her temporary job at the architect firm Henderson and Hall. Our meet-cute happens at a historic mansion that is being renovated. The contractors need change approved..and it turns out to be her college nemesis, Caleb. I love a good forced proximity, enemies to lovers story and settled in to watch the heated sparks fly.
Second Date: Oh, the attraction is there and I am hoping these two can open up about past issues and get to know one another. The chemistry is off the charts, but these two are playing a game and I loved the snark, banter and slow-build as we got updates on familiar characters, dealt with some theft, and began to really get to know both Emma and Caleb.
Third Date: Did I mention I love series/stories involving brothers? I adore these men and their sassy sister. Emma opens up, as does Caleb, which has me rooting for a happy ever after. I am just hoping miscommunication and stubbornness don’t get in the way. The romance feels genuine, and the passion is electric. Emma has been keeping some secrets, and once revealed, the romance really picks up.

Free Falling delivers heart, humor, and a slow-burning romance. With strong family dynamics, emotional depth, and plenty of laughs, this second Colbourn brothers installment delivered a satisfying read.

Free Falling is Book 2 of Colburn Brothers series. And I must say, this series hurts sooo good! Jill Shavis has a knack for writing emotionally scarred characters with so much depth that no matter what they went or are currently going through, they just keep pushing toward without expectations.
Emma was so relatable and her character really shined from beginning to end. She met Caleb in college, they were rivals majoring in Architecture. The two later crossed paths again when they get assigned to renovate a historical building together. She hasn’t forgiven him for earning a scholarship that she needed to stay afloat, so when she sees him again for the first time, things get heated quickly.
The hate was one sided of course since these two barely knew each other. Caleb was warned to not get intimately involved with her by his brothers because it could put their jobs on the line.
Even though Emma had her hesitations about Caleb and continued to tell white lies to protect herself, I thought she carried herself really well. The romance was lighthearted and sweet! It was actually really healing. I loved them together.
I came to see Hank really differently in this book. He was a shit father and the main reason his kids resented him but I loved how they still cared for him and held space for him. I felt so much remorse for him even though he was shitty..
Overall, pretty solid read for me! I can’t wait to see what’s next.

My first five star read of the year & I am absolutely delighted that it’s another Jill Shalvis masterpiece! I throughly enjoyed the first of this series He Falls First & was SO excited & honored to be an arc reader for Free Falling! Caleb made me swoon from the very beginning & Emma was a girl after my only child heart from the start, as well. PLUS restoring an old house?! SAY NO MORE.

⛈️ chapter 16….we LOVE a secluded forced proximity due to a storm scene!
😭 and the way that Caleb stayed with Emma when she was afraid of the storm!

💞 one thing I will always speak loudly about how much love in Jill’s books….the man are not toxic. Caleb was so kind & the problems in the story never make you feel scared for the relationship. I truly appreciate this writing style. It proves to a fault that you don’t need toxic masculinity to create an AMAZING plot line. Jill’s are superior because of this.

I knew I would love Caleb’s book, he is so endearing, funny and swoon worthy! The banter between the Colburn brothers is perfect and the family bond they share with everyone is so wholesome to read. Emma is a badass FMC, she has had so much trauma but still knows how to back herself, kicking ass and taking names. A perfect balance for Caleb. The back ground mystery to the first book went deeper this time and I’m intrigued for what will come of this in the third book and what the heck Tucker is up to!! 5 gloriously awesome stars!! ❤️❤️❤️

Yet another Jill Shalvis win for me! I was enamored by the Colburn brothers after reading He Falls First and have been looking to reading more of the series. Free Falling gives us a smoldering slow burn, rivals to lovers romance with all the found family and small town shenanigans that I love from Jill.
Caleb and Emma were college nemesis who suddenly find themselves working on a project together. The tension and banter between them was instant and so good. I loved how they dealt with their past and each went on an emotional journey towards healing.
I was able to listen to this via audio and loved the dual POV narration from Lila winters and Sebastian York. They absolutely brought the banter and chemistry between Caleb and Emma to life. I was excited to get back to the Colburn brothers series!
This book we learned more about Caleb. He is a retired hockey player after an injury. He heads back home to start working in the family business Colburn Restoration. He feels he needs to earn his spot so when a big job comes up that he can take the lead he wants to give it his all.
Emma Sumner has had a lot of bad luck. She finally lands a job as an architect liaison. This kind of job can help turn her life around. Bad news when she find out she will be working with Caleb.
They both went to college together and did not part ways very good.
There is also someone who is damaging and stealing from the job sites, and they are having a hard time figuring out who it is!
I really enjoyed the banter, humor, found family and romance, along with the character growth as the story progresses.
The characters have some bad experience or trauma in their past. I think that Jill does a beautiful job showing the grief, sorrow and the healing process and working on letting others in, forgiveness and moving forward. In this series the Colburn brothers and sister all had a traumatic background with abuse from their father. So it is interesting to read each book and learn about their perspective and how they are working on healing from it.
This book has spice, about 2 🌶️

I am love with the Colburns! I started this and could not stop reading until I turned the last page. I thought no one could top Ryder but then I met Caleb.
I was so nervous for Emma with the way she was living but could totally understand how it happens and felt for her situation. Caleb was the perfect mix of sweet and swoony and I adored how he wanted to just take care of Emma. To be honest I’m surprised she lasted as long as she did without anyone finding out!
The only problem now is the wait for book 3 and Tucker and Hazel’s story!
