Bullets Over Bourbon: The Breakfast Murder Club

Rate this book
Driftwood was supposed to be her refuge.
A weather-beaten Victorian clinging to the cliffs. A bookstore that smelled of ink and salt air. A quiet town where Jane Fairhaven could disappear behind polite smiles and careful routines—bury her real name, her real sins, and pretend the ghosts in her chest would finally let her breathe.

But when her assistant—and closest friend—is found murdered between the shelves, Driftwood turns savage. Outsider. Suspect. Murderer. The words hang in every whisper, every stare.

And then there is Detective Malcolm Rakes. Kat’s cousin. Driftwood born and bred, but scarred by years in Boston chasing high-profile cases that never closed, carrying secrets that bled into the man he became. His badge may be suspended, but his instincts are still sharp, his gaze as relentless as the tide. He should despise Jane. She should fear him.

Instead, something dangerous coils between them. A current built of grief and suspicion, crackling into something darker—desire threaded with ruin. A hunger that blurs the line between enemy and ally, protector and predator.

But someone else is watching. Someone who silenced Kat, and who isn’t finished. In Driftwood, secrets don’t stay buried. They fester. They twist. And surrendering to the wrong man might cost Jane not only her freedom… but her life.

I did not see that ending coming, and I am still reeling. This story twists and lunges when you least expect it, tightening its grip with every chapter until you can’t possibly look away. I loved every second of it. The FMC is fierce, sharp, and unapologetically independent an absolute force and I adored her strength as much as her vulnerability. From the moment Jane Fairhaven retreats to Driftwood a to a salt-scented bookstore meant to be her sanctuary, you can feel the tension simmering beneath the surface. She came to disappear, to bury her real name and her sins, to outrun the ghosts pressing against her ribs. But when her assistant and closest friend is murdered between the shelves, the town turns on her, and whispers of outsider, suspect, murderer echo through every stare. Then there’s Detective Malcolm Rakes. A haunted, relentless, suspended police officer who is far from powerless and whose grief collides with hers in a storm of suspicion and undeniable heat. What coils between them is dangerous, magnetic, and edged with ruin, blurring every line between ally and enemy, protector and predator. And just when you think you understand the game, the story strikes again, reminding you that in Driftwood, secrets rot before they rise. I need the next book immediately because that finale? Chef’s kiss.

I continue to be amazed by the talents of these authors. B. Wills and Yvonne Hamilton, they a very unique way of sucking you into a story and you think you know what is happening, but you are so off base it is ridiculous. I could not stop reading this book. The characters are very well written, I love their banter. the plot and the twists and turns kept me at the edge of my seat.

****Highly Recommend ****

I read this as part of Wills's ARC team and am now a fan of her writing. The way she crafts a scene with descriptions planted me right in the middle of the plot. I found myself holding my breath during suspenseful moments and gasping in the action scenes. The FMC is also a strong and independent woman and her enemies turned lover relationship actually feels believable. My only gripe? A cliffhanger 😩

3.75 ⭐️ rounded up to 4.

This was a storyline that I haven’t seen yet so it kept me interested. However, I felt the beginning of the book dragged on a little bit so it was harder to get through. I didn’t read book 1, so I’m not sure if that’s why it was harder for me to get into it or not. This story felt very well rounded and felt like I wasn’t missing any info from book 1.
The last 30% of the book had me hooked though! I loved the character development of the 2 main characters and I really enjoyed all of the twists and turns. I needed to find out what was actually going on! Jane Fairhaven seems like a boring bookshop owner but she’s actually a secret bada**! A few questions were left unanswered which is a great set up for book 3. I need to know what happen next!

If you’re looking for a dual POV mystery with slight romance this book is for you. The romance is an enemies to lovers slow burn.

Thank you to author B. Wills and Golden Light Publishing for providing me with this ARC.

ARC Review of ‘Bullets over Bourbon’

This story had me hooked!
There is suspense, mystery, a murder and a plot twist! More plot twists actually, and I didn’t see it coming!
Told from a dual POV to get inside their heads how they perceive the happenings around them.
There were bits and pieces here and there that felt dragging, also during Rakes’ POV where he tells how the station feels, 3 chapters started this way, so when I started focusing on repetition, these things stood out.
The characters are intriguing, even the bad guys.

Am intrigued to see what happens in the next book.
Giving it a 4/5⭐️ mainly due to some repetitiveness, and sometimes long inner dialogues.
But the story overal is actually good!

This was book two in the breakfast murder club series and I absolutely cannot wait for book three!! The banter and connection between Malcolm and Quinn had me laughing, mad and swooning all at the same time! This is a slow burn but let me tell you when it burns it burns SO SO bright! Yvonne Hamilton had me hooked in on book one and now b wills has me even more hooked on book two! I absolutely cannot wait to see what they have planned for book three! I needed it like yesterday! Between the mystery, action, with a touch of romance I literally could not put this down! B wills will absolutely always surprise me with her amazing talent as a writer!

***** ARC Read 4 Stars ⭐️ *****
Jane's best friend Kat was murdered, and then she meets Detective Malcom Rakes who is Kat's cousin. The slow burn is chef's kiss for real. When we finally get some action, I was cheesing. I loved their banter. Jane is just so sassy. Malcom has secrets of his own. This gives small town murder mystery vibes. You think you know where the plot is going and it leaves on a mega cliffhanger. We will be waiting for the next book. Impatiently. Thank you to Golden Light Publishing for providing me with the advanced reader's copy.

I absolutely loved this!

Jane Fairhaven thought she found a safety net in the quiet town of Driftwood. But when her best friend Kat is murdered, Driftwood is not quite as it seems.

Then she meets Detective Malcolm Rakes. Kat’s cousin. Born and raised in Driftwood, returning from Boston with a secretive past of his own.

They shouldn't be. But this is an enemies to lovers afterall.

It's book two out of a series and I am already impatiently waiting for book three!

This is a 4.75!!!

I received this as an arc, all my opinions are my honest ones.

This is the second in an ongoing series, and this is honestly my favorite.

When I decide to read a B. Wills book, I know it’ll be addictive, fast-paced and that tension will be draped shadows.

Bullets over Bourbon is a fun and easy read. While I found the plot a bit predictable at the beginning, it eventually picked up in tension and delivered a compelling twist at the end.

Yep I will read whatever these two authors write. Genuinely some of the best plot twists and romance I've read! I adore the characters in both books and especially this one. Malcom and Jane were a hot mess. I laughed way too much at some of the shenanigans. I love the twists and how the suspense unraveled. One of my biggest issues with thrilleresque novels is how easy it is to figure things out. Not here. They kept me guessing until the bitter end. And still that ending!!! Ugh!!!!!

I love the slow burn romance that happens ....I don't wanna ruin it for anyone!!! If you love a good murder mystery with a kick ass female lead and a male lead that will match her pace and call her out ....this books for you!!!

And to think I would be satisfied after reading this book…WRONG! I NEED more NOW! I cannot deal with the cliffhanger this left off on. B has such a remarkable way of not only writing bad a** FMCs but she writes her characters with a chemistry that is actually believable. I loved Jane, so independent, witty and sassy. I did want to smack Malcom at times but his stubbornness definitely led to some fantastic banter between the two. If you are looking for a good mystery with an enemies to lovers romance…this one’s for you!

**ALPHA READ**

Jane is working hard to put her past behind her and move on with her life, concealing the identity she once knew for a life of peace and healing. When her best friend is found murdered and rumors begin circulating along with the handsome detective determined to solve his cousin's murder case (even when the force doesn't want him to), Jane is forced to face the past head on, white lillies and all.

The second installment of the Breakfast Murder Club series ties so beautifully into book one that it just makes my heart sing! I am amazed and impressed with how well Wills takes a story and sends your heart racing - and spiraling - as everything progresses towards the final conflict. You never want to put the books down for fear of missing something big, and watching the pieces come together throughout to see the bigger picture is brilliant, only to realize youre still not seeing everything. The cliffhangers will leave you begging for mercy and more, and I am already so stoked for the next book in this series!

When Jane moves to Driftwood and finally opens the bookstore she’s always dreamed of, she believes she’s found her quiet new beginning. But everything changes when her assistant—and best friend—Kat is brutally murdered right inside the shop. Suddenly, Jane’s fresh start becomes a nightmare.
While Jane tries to stay out of the spotlight and keep her past buried, she’s also desperate to uncover what really happened. Is her own history the reason Kat is dead? Or is Driftwood hiding more secrets than anyone realized?
Malcolm, Kat’s cousin and a determined investigator, senses Jane is involved somehow—if not directly, then by proximity—and that nagging suspicion only grows stronger when his own supervisors pressure him to drop the investigation. Something isn’t right, and he won’t let it go.
As Jane and Malcolm work parallel tracks, grudgingly circling toward each other, the truth becomes harder to ignore. The real questions emerge:
✨ Who killed Kat—and why?
✨ What dark secrets are buried beneath Driftwood’s charming surface?
✨ Can Jane and Malcolm trust each other enough to solve the case before the killer strikes again?
A gripping mystery full of tension, distrust, and buried truths, this story keeps you guessing all the way through. Perfect for fans who love small-town secrets, twisty investigations, and flawed characters on the run from their own pasts.

Small-Town Secrets and a Past That Won’t Stay Buried
This is a gripping mystery defined by relentless tension and beautifully flawed characters. When Jane’s dream of a quiet life in Driftwood is shattered by the brutal murder of her best friend, Kat, the reader is pulled into a twisty narrative where no one can be truly trusted. The story masterfully balances Jane’s desperate attempt to keep her past buried with the mounting pressure from Malcolm, a determined investigator who suspects Jane is hiding more than she lets on.
As Malcolm’s own supervisors push him to abandon the case, the sense of conspiracy grows, forcing Jane to eventually abandon her hope for peace and put her specialized skills to use. This conflict creates an addictive read that explores the weight of secrets and the cost of a fresh start. It is an excellent, high-stakes addition to the series, delivering a perfect blend of small-town atmosphere, suspenseful yearning, and a generous helping of spice.

Content Warning: This book contains depictions of graphic violence, murder, and adult themes.

Thank you to the author for providing an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Bullets Over Bourbon takes place in a small town where nothing is what it seems, including the reserved bookstore owner. When Jane opens the shop one morning to find her assistant, Kat, murdered in a very specific manner, she knows she is being targeted and that she can trust no one.
Malcolm, a detective determined to solve his cousin’s murder, knows Jane is hiding something. When he is abruptly pushed to drop the investigation, she may be the only person with the answers he needs.

Bullets Over Bourbon is the second instalment in the Breakfast Murder Club series. I haven’t read the first book, Blades Over Breakfast, but I had no trouble following the storyline. That said, I do get the sense that reading the books in order would be the better option.

B. Wills does an excellent job of building tension and creating characters I could genuinely connect with. The atmospheric writing left me feeling deeply unsettled as the stakes continued to rise, and the plot twists need a chiropractor.

If you enjoy thrillers with strong female characters, sharp banter, and an almost gothic feel in a modern setting, this one’s for you. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you to B. Wills and Golden Light Publishing for the digital ARC.

This book had me hooked from the start. I couldn’t put it down until I finished. It’s so full of twists and turns that I never saw coming. And that ending…oh dang it was so unexpected. Every chapter, every page, got me more and more invested in the story. Our FMC is an absolute beast of a character. She’s strong and independent, full of sharp wit and determination. I immediately fell in love with her as a character. The tension and suspense that this author creates in this story is absolutely insane. And the banter was on point. Our MCs really went through some serious character development that made me love them even more. I laughed, I swooned, I wanted to kick some teeth in. This book had it all and more. But no part of the story felt out of place or unnecessary. Every character, every action mattered and served a purpose for the story. The relationships read as real and genuine. I was on the edge of my seat, white knuckling my kindle until the very end. My literal only complaint is that it ended. I need more!

4.5/5 stars!

How do I describe the wild ride of emotions that I experienced during the course of this book. Honestly, I was not expecting ANY OF THIS. I was literally clutching my pearls and holding my breath in more than a couple of instances. From the first page this book started off with a bang and the hits kept coming. We meet “Jane” and Detective Rakes after a recent tragedy, and their lives quickly entangled as secrets begin to emerge. As stubborn as our FMC, as she slowly begins to reveal her true identity as Quinn, the relationship between her and Rakes blossom.

“He kisses me like he’s trying to memorize me, like this is the only language left to tell the truth in.”

I admire an author that knows how’s to tasteful interlace sexy scenes with the plot, and still make a great storyline. The spicy scenes weren’t an after thought, but placed purposely to help amplify the book.

I’m excited to see what happens next because this story is just getting started and is far from over.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I was fortunate enough to receive this book as being a part of Will's ARC team. This was my first time reading one of her books and I was hooked. The way the book was written was so well done that I was able to fully immerse myself into it like I was watching a movie. I usually read my books at night once I have my kids down for bed, and boy let me tell you, this book gave me the creeps LOL. I could not shake that feeling that someone was watching me and I give that huge credit to Will's writing. This book perfectly balanced suspense, yearning, and a continuous theme of doubt. I really enjoyed the pacing and all the twists in this story. I feel like I never really knew what to expect next. Can't believe it ended on a cliffhanger though!! I'm ready for the next one to be out already, the anticipation is killing me! I don't genuinely have any complaints about this book, I loved it.
