"there is a boy. he makes my heart burst – with pain, with reverie, and with everything, in between. i see his eyes in the sun, when it rises and it sets. i hear his voice in the drum, when it stops and it begins. everything he is, is so lovely."
-excerpt from BOY, a collection of poems about affection, love, and loss, dedicated to all the boys who played a part.
This was some beautiful poetry! Unique, powerful ... it conjured up many feelings. Although I've only experienced some of the emotions Miss Watson so deftly and sweetly captures, I felt as though I were inside each poem and had experienced its emotions---a testimony to her skill. I enjoyed the distinctive layout of the book as well. If you like raw and touching free verse poetry, do pick up this book!
A beautiful collection of poems. Couldn't put it down until I read it all! So, so relatable. What I really love about Watson's style is her emphasis on imagery, simplicity of diction, & her distinct aesthetic. Each poem is a complete story of its own - no matter the length. A beginning, a middle, & an end. Also, her unique literary voice is conveyed in her careful word placement; the reader knows the timing of each word, when to pause, & what parts to emphasize. A great addition to any bookshelf whether you're into poetry or not; reading this book may change your mind.
Brilliant, sober poetry on love and life. The free verse format of the book relaxes the reader by working outside the boundary of rhyme and alliteration to convey its messages. A beautiful and highly recommended read.
I've never been a fan of poems. Opening this small book of poems, I was very intrigued and yet surprised by how much I loved these poems and the story it told. These short poems are raw, honest and easy to analyze. The poems were arranged in a order that told a story- a story many young women have felt after any hard breakup and falling in love. I wish I had read these poems earlier in my teen years. Inspirational, and a work of art I plan to share with others.
