A daily account of my Winter Round, plus chapters on my early life, motivations, and an afterword.
On 22nd December 2023, Anna Wells embarked on an ambitious challenge: to climb all 282 Munros in a single winter season.
Over 83 relentless days, she faced Scotland’s mountains in their fiercest conditions. Some days she battled alone through storms, whiteouts, blizzards, and long, dark nights. On others she skipped along golden, snowy ridgelines with friends at sunset. Along the way, friends and strangers alike offered meals, accommodation and support, weaving immeasurable richness into her story.
Breaking the Snowline is an intimate account not only of the mountains Anna climbed, but also of the inner journey she embraced – motivation, burnout, self-doubt, joy, fear and, above all, passion. Blending raw honesty with heartfelt reflections on hard-won life lessons and the meaning of confidence, it is a story of determination that celebrates the importance of chasing a dream and living authentically.
A very empowering and aww inspiring read from Anna Wells, the 1st woman to ever complete a Winter Munro round and the 4th person to ever complete the Winter Munro round, couldn't put this book down, such an amazing journey.
Well what a great book to start the year off - I really couldn't put it down and poured over OS maps to discover more about Anna's routes. The descriptions of the mountains, changing weather and the preparation required made me feel part of her journey. Anna is brutally honest and shows enormous insight into her changing emotions and how she navigated all her challenges. She also shows such gratitude and appreciation for all the support both virtual and personally which is heartwarming. This is the best mountain/ adventure/ challenge book I've read and has totally inspired me to get out more into the more gnarly winter days which I've previously avoided. Thankyou Anna.
